Hi all. I had a look to the Release Notes for Grml 2011.12-rc1 and something seems very unclear to me : * The accessibility support now consists of shipping standard speakup and enabling sound during boot. A new beep sequence (4 tones) is sounded just before the quickconfig menu starts. (The boot options have been removed.) When I hear the 4 tones, is it time to invoke brltty ? I don't really understand the meaning of « the boot options have been removed». And when shall I choose lang=fr ? Thanks for explanations. -- Ph. Delavalade

HI all. I'm new on this list and new to GRML. Being blind and french, I have to enter the following when booting on the CD : grml blind brltty=pm,usb:,fr@FR lang=fr-iso It is difficult because I don't know exactly when it is boot prompt and I have to do this with a qwerty keyboard instaid of my usual azerty. Mistakes are frequent :-( So, I would like to know if it's possible to avoid the step of boot options. I guess it's possible to remaster the iso but maybe there is something more simple and handy. If it's the only way to remaster, where can I find informations to do this ? Long time ago, I did that with the linuxfromscratch livecd but every step was explained... Hi there, We - the grml team - have recently discussed rather substantial changes in our interactive zsh setup. The setup is quite large, large enough to not be maintainable by our limited resources. Therefore, we will be cutting down its size in the not-so-distant future. The current plan is outlined here: <http://ft.bewatermyfriend.org/tmp/gzcu.org> We might make some of the removed features available as add-ons. A tentative list of ideas is here: <http://piratenpad.de/g1A8PIJkOL> Work on this will begin shortly - albeit in a separate branch of the `grml-etc-core' package's git repository. If there is anything in the removal list, that you'd like to keep, make a convincing argument as to why the feature in question should be kept. After the cleanup is done, we are planning to split the zsh setup out of `grml-etc-core' and into a package of its own, so that users who are only interested in the zsh-setup can quickly install just that on any debian-based OS. [cc:ed grml@ mailing list for further exposure] Hi everybody, starting now, we will ship a different set of Grml flavours and package sets in future releases. (For more background please see the October 2011 meeting minutes.) Our goal is to have one ~300MB ISO flavour which will ship with all the commonly used tools for rescue & deployment tasks. This flavour replaces the old full, medium and small ISOs. Have a look at the (current) package list in detail: http://git.grml.org/?p=grml-live.git;a=blob;f=etc/grml/fai/config/package_c… Note that as we go along changes to this list will happen. If you're missing a tool you're using day to day in rescue & deployment scenarios, please suggest it! My problems with my hardware synth are absolutely not grml problems. I've found the same problem occurs with the speakup module in the stock debian kernel in the testing release. There is something wrong with the kernel module for the doubletalk synt starting around kernel 2.6.38. It works in kkernel version 2.6.32 and it works in newer kernels on 32 bit machines. Its only newer 64 bit kernels where the problem occurs. I have not been able to get software speech to work but that's probably because I don't know how to unmute a sound card in character mode. There ought to be a linux package to set a rational configuration for sound cards. There used to be a program called alsaconf but it was dropped from the alsa packages a few years ago. I can't imagine why. It seemed to work like a charm. Anyway, personally, I am satisfied with hardware synth support and braille support. If you say software speech works, so much the better. Although, I think it would be both useful and cool for grml to pplay a little tune through the beep command when its done booting. Like ubuntu has its distinctive drum beat when the GUI is done loading. It would become the grml theme mmusic. I would make it my ring tone. Well if you want nerdy, how about GRML done out in morse code? As for the unmuting of the sound card, I used alsamixer with brltty, possibly not the most efficient combination but it worked for me. Here is what I tested: * Let the ISO boot normally on a MacBookPro. * I got nothing to indicate that the CD had finished booting (don't know if that is what should happen currently). I just listened for when the CD activity seemed to stop. * I then tried to start brltty with no options and it started fine detecting my Braille display. * Then I checked sound levels. Everything except master seemed to be muted. As there was one channel labelled front speakers I decided to raise this volume first. Not sure if that is needed but if it is for sound output then may be that needs to be changed so that I will not need to raise that level. * I loaded the speakup_soft module which worked fine. * Started espeakup which also started fine. Things I could not test: * I could not test hardware speech output as my apollo synthesiser requires a serial port and the MacBookPro has no serial port. Accessibility: espeakup and ALSA

Hello, I seem to have a memory of a message saying that ALSA sound support in the medium ISO is being considered for removal, although I cannot find the message. Now as accessibility is being put in the medium ISO, the problem is that espeakup and espeak rely on working sound support to be of any use (as mentioned in the festival TTS documentation sound output is desirable, although having no sound card does mean less defects will be heard). I just thought I would bring this point to the attention of the developers, as there is no point in including espeakup and espeak unless sound support is there. Michael Whapples

Accessibility versus Packages

Hi, even if I don't need the discussed accessibility-packages, they seem to me much more important than other packages. As an example I remind on the discussion about TeX/LaTeX some time ago. Unless almost all of the packages are provided it is necessary to install some more. So it is the same to install all of them later. For me the main point is to have that kind of running system to be able to extend it later. I like GRML very much for all the nice programs in textmode. Sometimes I use X11, with a lot of xterms running ... Is it really necessary to provide a graphical VIM? The use of the *-register should also be possible (as a compile-option) in standard VIM. For cease-fire reasons you would have to remove the graphical Emacs too ;-) What's about packages like cowsay? I find it funny but I could live without. GRML could still recommend some of these programs by providing a list with interesting examples. Regards, Konrad

Hi, all the people here on the grml mailing list. Please don't take away accessibility, I'll manage it. You will have to give me step-by-exact step instructioons for how you got it to work that way and I will do it. I can learn, if you will some how show me how to do it. I have a 64 bit machine, so I probably will be best to do the 64-bit version. I just want a system that is all command line and handles current web technologies as well or better than the gnome-orca-firefox combination if possible. Is it possible to rewrite all those graphical applications so that they will work in command line? Can this process be automated? On the other hand, how hard would it be to build a NSA-like system that captures all the contents of the internet and redistributes it in a non-graphical form? Can't the blind community just build or get hold of some kind of supercomputer and then use artificial intelligence to rework all the internet sites into a non-graphical format and then set up a network provider that can be accessed by command-line only users to get the same content everyone else does? That is a research project for the future. If anyone has that kind of computing power available, please direct me to it. If no one wants to do this, theen, can you direct me to a way of getting command line accessibility on the command line in a 64-bit bersion? Please don't take accessibility out of grml. If you will show me just exactly what to do to get it to work and then build an iso, I can manage it. Sincerely: Doug Smith

How are blind grml users handling current web technologies?

, everyone on the list. I am writing this to see how blind grml users are handling current web technologies such as flash and javascript. I am wishing to change back to GRML which I haven't been able to use in years. The main reason is that the gui world is going to change and there have been problems with accessibility. This doesn't, of course happen with good old command line, of course, and I just wonder if some of the blind people using grml now can tell me about their work-aroundds for such problems as flash and javascript. Is it possible to have mplayer be the viewer for all these streaming file formats and get it to work with w3m or edbrowse or whatever: Please let me know if there is something you are doing to handle current web technologies in command line mode and i will be glad to hear from you. iscsitarget and iscsitarget-module-... in grml 2011.05

Hello everyone After still using 2010.12 for a long time, i switched my troubleshooting usb-stick to 2011.05 and tried to export a local drive via iscsi. Sadly this didn't worked out of the box because the kernel module was missing. I checked the packages and found that iscsitarget-module-`uname -r` wasn't installed... After installing this, there was a module version mismatch which required a upgrade of iscsitarget. The module version mismatch is supposedly due to the fact that the packages evolved since the release. But why didn't the kernel module made it into the release when it's needed by iscsitarget that's shipped - and that http://grml.org/kernel/ advertises this module. What did i miss in the whole process? And how do i best prepare for the next use of iscsitarget from the liveCD? Best regards and thanks for all the good work. Ursus

My RSS feed just alerted me to the article "Grml packages in Debian" on the developer blog. http://blog.grml.org/archives/358-Grml-packages-in-Debian.html I would like to point out that removing the packages from grml-testing leaves many people out of updates for a long time (until the packages have arrived in Debian Stable and some Ubuntu release). Plus, the grml2usb page http://grml.org/grml2usb/ still points to grml-testing. Please put the packages back into grml-testing and find a way to avoid a clash with Debian and Ubuntu repositories. Using grub2-dev in grml2usb suggestion for me.

Hi, I work off two USB's when on the road. First is created with grml2usb on 2011.05 and a GRMLCFG partition for persistence. Second is created with grml-crypto for for /home/someuser and /etc/vault. I was about to re-script what I do manually at boot when I discovered grub2 development tree now has a luks.mod (testing needed & i'm willing). I have built it from src and installed into grml-chroot on a squeeze host. I expect to use grml-live per remastering instructions and then grml2usb. GOAL; Phase 1 usb layout; 1 Meg unencrypted boot/decrypt area remainder fat16 encrypted /boot. grml & grml64. Phase 2 Unencrypted boot/decrypt area Remanider lvm2/luks encrypted (for single passphrase at boot) grml2usb partition with several flavors GRMLCFG partition home-rw live-rw home-sn (live-snapshots) live-sn. I plan to contribute it back as either a --luks option on grml2usb or seporate script. Have I missed any issues in reasearch you are aware of ? Is this approach logical ? Any pointers on how to proceede from chroot to usb ? I'm open to any suggestions and could post bata of process as it would need to be tested on more hardware than I have available. grml2usb install script failure

Hi I ran into a little trouble trying to install grml onto a usb stick When I ran grml2usb/tarball.sh the first time it was looking for fakeroot so I installed that package and then ran it again I get this error # /home/geordie/grml2usb/tarball.sh awk: cmd. line:1: fatal: cannot open file `grml2usb' for reading (Invalid argument) /usr/bin/fakeroot: line 178: debian/rules: No such file or directory installed grml2usb (0.9.34) unstable; System: Host SatelliteA100 Kernel 2.6.39-1.dmz.2-liquorix-686 i686 (32 bit) Desktop KDE 4.6.4 Distro Debian GNU/Linux wheezy/sid I tried finding the grml2usb in testing however # apt-cache search grml grml-debootstrap - wrapper around debootstrap for installing pure Debian grml-rescueboot - Integrates ISO-booting into grub so I downloaded the git version. I also tired the tarball version and see no changes. I was also surprised to see this loaded into my home folder. I may have done something wrong. Many thanks Geordie

Using development version of grub2

Hi all, I need to test with grub from the developers repository. I have it cleanly compiled on grml-2011.05. How do I "grub-install" it to /usr/share/grml-live/templates/boot/grub? I think from there grml-live will include it in iso for my work. Grub-install wants a /dev/*** to write mbr and I can't do that on this box. Hallo, Updating my recent letter: My old notebook, Asus A3521 with Pentium-M CPU, 1.6 GHz, 512MB memory, and Intel 855 GM graphics -- this I forgot to mention yesterday, is running well with Grml 2011.05 (as well as with older versions), either with Fluxbox or Ratpoison, except for a problem with Mozilla: The Grml homepage already present, Iceweasel crashes immediately when I try to open any other website, in case it needs video capabilities. The error message is: Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open \ shared object file: No such file or directory with segmentation fault to follow. Hallo, My old notebook, Asus A3521 with Pentium-M CPU and 512MB memory, is running well with Grml 2011.05 (as well as with older versions), either with Fluxbox or Ratpoison, except for a problem with Mozilla: The Grml homepage already present, Iceweasel crashes immediately when I try to open any other website, in case it needs video capabilities. The error message is: Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open \ shared object file: No such file or directory with segmentation fault to follow. Google search shows that the error message is well known when using Mplayer, but in my case this problem does not exist. Can anybody give a hint to a solution? Thanks in advance, Vilmar Klemt

hi, a while ago i bought one of the nice 32/64bit dual usb keys and since it is now a bit outdated (the version is from the beginning of 2010 or so) i would like to update it, but i haven't found a procedure in the wiki or anywhere else...and i would like to avoid having to do to much reading of docs and/or doing it by trial and error the hard way. can anybody point me in the right direction? thx yours, albert

How to setup Xorg keyboard layout ?

Hello, I'm trying to use the GRML iso image (with grml-rescueboot package) on computers with a special keyboard layout, a french-targeted dvorak-like layout called « bépo ». I found how to setup the console layout, giving « keyboard=dvorak-fr-bepo » in CUSTOM_BOOTOPTIONS variable of /etc/default/grml-rescueboot, but didn't found how to setup the Xorg layout : it's a flavor/variant of « fr » Xorg layout (though it very different from classical french Azerty) ; I can setup in a shell with : setxkbmap fr bepo and following grml's FAQ, I tried « xkeyboard=bepo », « xkeyboard=fr(bepo) » without luck. Could you tell me what syntax can we use in xkeyboard definition, or how to setup my Bépo keyboard layout (if possible) ? Thanks, Fred.

Problem with grml autoconfig

Hello everyone! Maybe this is not the right way to ask general user question (wrong mail list or something) so I'm sorry if made any problems. I have an urgent situation to make ad-hoc openvpn server from usb stick. Using grml for some time as a live cd and recovery tool I think this can be done with grml. So I have openvpn folder with all the necesary stuff, I formatted usb stick in following way: 1. 3GB FAT32 wiht grml on it (grml2usb --bootoptions="nodhcp") /dev/sdb1 2 1GB ext3 with GRMLCFG label with scripts dir and inside it grml.sh script /dev/sdb5 grml.sh script is chmod 755, so executable and readable by everyone. basicaly the content of script is: #!/bin/bash ip link set dev eth0 up ip addr add dev eth0 192.168.1.253/24 ip route add default via 192.168.1.254 #now I wont to copy the folder to rw fs in order to write status files and logs so cp -r /mnt/grmlcfg/openvpn /root/ cd /root/openvpn openvpn --config /root/openvpn/server.conf & echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward #and to start ssh server to access the box /etc/init.d/ssh start The debug output says that GRMLCFG is detected and mounted to /mnt/grmlcfg as ro When booting finished, nothing has happened, as the script had not been run. Missing mcrypt/mdecrypt

Hi. I just tried to create an encrypted disk image, like this - dd if=/dev/sda bs=1M | gzip | mcrypt > /mnt/backup/blah.img.gz.nc - but it seems mcrypt and mdecrypt are not included in the (full-size) Grml ISO. Any chance of adding those to the next release? I'm not set on using mcrypt; if there's a better way to do this, I'd be interested in that, too. I never store unencrypted data on portable devices (ever since I almost lost one), not even automated backups. But more generally, mcrypt/mdecrypt might come in handy in recovery situations, so it might make sense to include them anyway. Same goes for TrueCrypt, come to think of it. -- stefan

Syslinux timeout and grml2usb

Hi! I'm building a fileserver from an hp ProLiant MicroServer and GRML, with quite a bit of customization on GRMLCFG. While I sweated quite a bit over the best way to add the additional package I required (e.g. bacula-sd), this is not the subject ;-) When I copy a GRML64 ISO to an USB stick, isolinux will do a 30 second timeout. The syslinux with GRML64 will not do a timeout, while one with a 32 bit GRML will. So I suppose usb2linux does something wrong for a 64 bit GRML. In case it matters, this is run on a 64 bit Ubuntu Natty. While I would prefer to use a 64 bit Linux in case I upgrade the memory of the MicroServer to the maximum of 8 GB, I can live with a 32 Bit kernel for now, with just 1GB memory. Hello, i have installed grml on my netbook. I use grml with speakut an brltty. Now i have installed the gnome-desktop with orca. Normally i want to use the textconsoles tty1 to tty6 and start gnome- desktop with startx. So my question: How must i modify grml, so that i have six textconoles an ont tty7 a graphical login (gdm3), so that ic can change with ctrl+alt+f(x) between the consoles? Tanks for your help. Boot grml without CD ends with "No init found"

Hello I have a Proliant DL380G3 that I would like to boot without a CD. The instructions (http://wiki.grml.org/doku.php?id=tips&s=tohd#boot_grml_without_cd) seem clear enough, but alas I'm not successful yet. From the grml cdrom grub screen I can "grml noeject fromhd=/dev/cciss/c0d0p3" and boot successfully. From the grub screen on /dev/cciss/c0d0 I'm not so successful. Soon after displaying the "GRML" ASCII art I get the nasty error: "No init found. Try passing init= bootarg." and a busybox prompt, not a grml prompt. Maybe the initrd borked? Any help with achieving a grml prompt would be appreciated. booting iso directly

Hi, I am using ubcd with syslinux from my usb stick to boot the grml iso from it. This config looks like this: grml.iso (700MB) is copied to my usb stick at /mnt/usbstick/ubcd/custom/grml.iso syslinux .ini file is edited to reflect the iso location I reboot from the ubcd usb stick, and select grml.iso to boot. grml.iso is loaded into memory. Then, the grml boot-screen appears. After just selecting the standard boot, I get an error about a kernel module not being found. I am assuming the issue is that the .iso is simply "lost" but I never understood that while INT 13h call thing or whatever it is called. So I am dropped into an "initramfs"-shell. I have tried the following to get around this: Mounting the grml.iso into /live/image, then exiting: mkdir /mnt mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt mount /mnt/ubcd/custom/grml.iso /live/image -o loop exit However, this didn't work, I get more errors. On a side note, this approach does work for example with the arch linux netinstall.iso, so I am sure it will work with grml, but I guess my issue is I don't know exactly if /live/image is the correct location? Any help greatly appreciated!

Custom user configs on grml

Hi all, grml supports custom configs loaded at boot time via network, local devices or remastered ISOs. I would love to have a basic configuration of my own on vanilla grml. Especially at work, I can't influence who burns what images and being able to rely on having a config that suits me no matter where I grabbed a grml CD from would be extremely useful. Thus, my question: Is it worthwhile to include some user configs in grml? I am aware of the size constraints grml is facing, but RC files tend to be tiny and compress well. mrud is not sure if it's worth the trade-off, I think it is. Great idea? Insane? grml-debootstrap: troubles with debian keyring

Hi list! It happened that I had to install debian squeeze with an old (~1 year) version of grml. When running grml-debootstrap it exited with an error, saying something like "E: Release signed by unknown key (key id AE...)" The solution was to update Debian keyring. apt-get update apt-get install debian-archive-keyring At the first moment I had no clue how to solve the issue. So it would be nice if grml-debootstrap recognizes this error and gives the user a hint on how to fix it. Besides that everything ran fine ;-) greetz, Michael

Creating Live USB with grml2usb

I would like to put grml live cd on usb drive. I created bootable w96 fat32 partition and formatted it using mkfs.vfat. I ran "grml2sub grml.iso /dev/sdb1". I am getting boot error. I tried to create live usb with unetbootin. This worked. Would anyone have an idea what is going wrong? Thanks in advance

Hello, i have installed grml squeeze on a asus eeepc 1005ha-m. I sue speakup and brltty, because i am blind. Now i want to use gnomes-orca with firefox and openoffice with gnome. At the moment i do not have installed gnome. If i do: grml-x the xserver starts, but i can not come back to the textconsole. ctrl-alt- f(x) will not work, also not the ctrl-alt-bacspace to shutdown the xserver. How can i set the xorg correct for the asus 1005ha-m? How can i start the xserver to console tty7? On my system are only the consoles tty1 to tty6for switching between themself configurede, ist that correct? Can i use orca with fluxbox? Thanks for your help and regards. Dietmar

grml for hardware inventorying

Hi. Today I received a mail from a friend asking me if I know any tool to make hardware inventorying and I remember using one Linux bootable from floppy that did that but at tis time is too old and obsolete (and I don't remember its name either :-) ). So, I was thinking if grml comes with some kind of this software that could save the information on a USB or through network. Doing a fast search on Debian repository there's something called "ocsinventory" but seems not to be part of grml (maybe I should remaster a CD with it). And the "hardware detection tool" that you can use at boot time is not usable for this since I didn't find a way to save the information to a device not network so is hard to inventory about 50 computers with it. Trying to boot grml ISO image with grml-rescueboot fails

Hello, I don't know GRML yet, but I've heard about it in Mikas' blog (http://michael-prokop.at/blog/2011/01/07/booting-iso-images-from-within-gru…) and liked to try it, so I installed grml-rescueboot (0.2.0 version) debian package from http://deb.grml.org/ and installed it on my Debian Squeeze system, along with the grml64-medium_2010.12.iso image in /boot/grml directory. I then tried to boot it through the Grub2's menu entry, but it didn't work (using menu, we don't see any error message). I then try to launch every command of the menu entry in Grub2's command line, and it fails in the line : loopback loop "/boot/grml/grml-medium_2010.12.iso" telling it doesn't find this file. I think the 'root' setting is missing, and as I have before Grml a grub menu entry to boot a Windows partition, the last root setting isn't the right one. I've manually set 'root' and then I finally got a new menu, from GRML, and then I tried the 'forensic mode', as I didn't want GRML using my swap partition (I had an hibernated system there), but the debian-live system didn't work. I don't have any clue here as the 'debug' variable wasn't set (and so /live.log was empty), but I'll retry this when I have some spare time). Hope it can help, Fred.

Grub2 install behavior changed? Grml LiveCD 2010.12

I've previously been using Ubuntu v10.10 as my maintenance OS for managing Grub2, but since discovering that Grml's LiveCD environment includes a recent Grub2 release I thought I'd give that a go. Grml is using Grub2 version 1.99~201012221-1" (same as "beta0" right?) While Ubuntu 10.10 reports "1.98+20100804-5ubuntu3". I have my "master grub partition" - which contains my bootable ISOs, persistence files for some of the LiveCDs, and a /boot/grub/ folder. This folder has the results of previous "grub-install" commands run from Ubuntu, as well as a manually maintained grub.cfg. There is no OS in this partition (other than the LiveCD ISOs). Even though under most distros the drive containing this partition comes up as /dev/sde, Grub2 sees it as (hd0), so I've got it set up as my boot device. I also have a second drive (/dev/sdf or (hd1) via grub) set up identically, also bootable and use rsync to back up the partitions' contents after any significant changes (I originally tried to do this as a RAID1 mirror, but ran into problems with some LiveCDs mounting the persistence files from the member partition, breaking the array). Booting into Grml, I map the first drive's grub partition to /mnt/g201, so the grub folder is now at /mnt/g201/boot/grub and run: grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/g201/ /dev/sde At next boot, the loader brings me to a blank grub prompt (not the rescue grub, a full working grub2 environment with root=(hd0,msdos1) as it should be To figure out what the boot loader is doing, I run boot-info-script (excellent tool BTW, should definitely be added to Grml!) and it tells me "Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sde and looks for we." As opposed to my second drive, for which says (much more informatively)" "Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdf and looks on the same drive in partition #1 for (,msdos1)/boot/grub." The latter being normal for a correctly working boot loader, at least as far as Ubuntu is concerned. I then have a look at my first drive's grub partition, and see that my grub-install command from Grml resulted in a whole new grub folder directly under the root /mnt/g201/grub, rather than updating the existing /mnt/g201/boot/grub So I figure this is why the boot loader isn't loading the grub.cfg from my usual /boot/grub - presumably it's looking for a grub.cfg in /grub and of course there isn't one there. So this time I run the command as follows: grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/g201/boot /dev/sde Note the path spec'd to the /boot parent of where grub should go, rather than the root of the device as is usual under Ubuntu. This time the result file for the boot-info-script tells me "Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sde and looks for le." (as opposed for "we" before - WTF?) But the drive now boots up properly into my boot.cfg. So I was able to get it working. Is this an intended behavior change for grub-install, that --boot-directory is now supposed to specify the immediate parent of where I want the /grub folder to go? I hope not, because having a canonical /boot/grub location seems to be helpful in troubleshooting - letting the user put it anywhere s/he likes seems an unnecessary complication. . . It also seems that many of the entries in my grub.cfg no longer are working, so rather than troubleshooting all the other changes between these two Grub2 version, at this point I'm going back to Ubuntu's and hopefully these problems will go away. If I do want to come back to this later, is there a good location for documentation on things the end user needs to be aware of regarding differences between 1.98 and 1.99? Thanks in advance. . .

dupmerge - : Value too large for defined data type

First of all, heaps of gratitude for the excellent contribution, tremendously helpful tool. I really like the way you keep my mdadm raids in order, compared to some of the mangling I see under other "rescue disks" (actually rw-writing the preferred minor?) What brought me to Grml was the fact that you include the dupmerge tool out of the box, but in running it over a large set of video files (around 5 TB at the moment, ext3 filesystem) I'm getting tons of the above error messages on large files (some are up to 16GB). Having such a tool fail on the largest files kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it 8-) I see you're running v1.70, while Sourceforge lists v1.73 as current (as of 2008!), and I see references on the interwebs to v1.74, so consider this if nothing else a request to update. If it's not difficult it's also be great to be able to check out another one or two similar deduplication tools unless you've already checked them all out and consider dupmerge2 the best? Hello I have problems with grml-mutt I have my mail stored data and can easily retrieve mail from the server using POP3. Unfortunately, the folded delivery of mail to any address not. My mail to a TOnline address is ok but not go to Gmail adress, unless I have a gmail mail as coming from "reply" to answer then it goes through?? Hello, i have installed grml on my harddisk. 1. What ist the default consolefont of grml? 2. I want to use a older linux-version of openxp (crosspoint Mail and news). The editior of openxp can not use utf8. If i do term2iso, the program show the menus correct (ae,oe, ue ss). But in the editor the german ue, ae oe or ss wil be not displayed correct. trouble with hard-disk installation

Using Grml2HD I installed Grml_2010.12 on two notebooks, Acer TM4233 (Core2Duo T5500, external (USB) HD), and Acer Aspire One (Atom 260, internal HD). Everything worked fine, so I started 'apt-get update' (with Debian Unstable and Grml Testing included in sources list) and 'apt-get upgrade'. Additionally, I installed some packages not included in Grml (eg. tex-live). Overoptimistically, I did not keep track of the records, and when I realized that, using Xorg-core 7.7, I got frozen X-terminals and blocked input fields in Iceweasel (dead keyboard?), I was unable to find the origin of the trouble. There are no error messages, either in syslog or in Xorg.0.log, and the problem seems to be independent of the window manager (fluxbox, openbox) and the terminal program used (xterm, eterm). Do I really have to do a compltely new installation? Thanks in advance, Vilmar Klemt

Hi, I'm thinking to do the disk partition encryptions now. However "Hard drive encryption sounds like an intimating concept, mostly because it is. The thought of taking your precious files, then using a mathematical formula to convert them into random noise before scattering them back across your disk is a hard sell. The official "Disk Encryption HOWTO" from tldp.org [2] is only dated as 2004-11-17, so I would assume it is *way* outdated. In terms of security, I tend to turn to people that I trust for help. grml custom installation on 1GB USB device ?

Hi grml. My computer has a no-award bios which suffers from problems booting USB-HDD devices. As I can tell I'm limited to a single 1GB partition although iso images installed via dd do boot. Currently I have a usb device which boots kernel with an initramfs ( embedded ) that activates raid ( metadata=1.2 ) and lvm on mirrored sata drives that contain root partition. I would like to replace this initramfs that contains little sysadmin functionality with grml and see a few options of how to realize: 1-grml persistency, but I think my bios constrains will make it difficult to do iso leaving ~300MB enough for home-rw, live-rw, and GRMLCFG ? 2-customizing an existing grml iso image to include a default grub entry that mounts root=/dev/md0 with a fallback to grml ? Other ways or suggestions ? Sven

EXT3-fs: barriers not enabled

Hi GRML. I appreciate your system, have been using since 2008. Recently learned about persistency which I plan to use to replace custom initramfs for booting & maintenance of RAID1/LVM2 systems containing root partitions. I just finished migrating Gentoo from single partition to mirrored ( RAID1 ) and LVM2 volumes. In the process, I learned/realized that the Ext3 filesystems contained within raid/volume group are not enabling write barriers despite being told by fstab to do so. This is 2.6.36 kernel with lvm2 version 2.02.73. I thought to try to grml 2010.12 as well, but problem remains. My question: is there any magic "Start" besides mdadm-raid, lvm that should be necessary ? We can otherwise mount partitions without incident. Does somebody have ext3 barriers enabled by default such that I know it should be realized with 2010.12 ? Appreciatively, Sven

Is nss-ldap missing from grml 2010.04 ?

Hi All, I have been using grml for the last couple of months. I am building a network of about 20 machines, all running grml, and I want them to share a single set of login names and passwords. So I decided to configure OpenLDAP as a service on one machine and configure the other machines to find login+password from this service. I am following the instructions set out at: http://wiki.debian.org/LDAP/NSS http://www.debian-administration.org/article/585/OpenLDAP_installation_on_D… They suggest I use libnss-ldap. But this package seems to be missing from my copy of grml 2010.04. I have also checked the package list for 2010.12 and that does not contain libnss-ldap. This seems a strange omission from grml. It contains slapd to run the service and several clients such as freeradius-ldap, libnet-ldap-perl, postfix-ldap, and smbldap-tools. So why not libnss-ldap? I could install libnss-ldap on each client machine. But then I have to repeat those same steps on 20 machines, which makes it 20 times more likely I will make a mistake somewhere. I tried "apt-get install libnss-ldap" on a test machine. This started updating libc-bin and installing locales, which seemed a good way of breaking the distro. Can anyone suggest a better approach? Should I remaster the CD? Is there some gmrl magic I am missing? Is there a different tool for login+password that is not ldap? Thanks Jonty

root-FS readonly after grml2hd

I just installed latest grml64 sid vi grml2hd and after rebooting from disk /-filesystem ist mounted readonly. Tried it with several combinations of filesystem and bootloader but always the same effect. Any ideas? grml autoconfig and kvm network

Hi, Whenever I use the '-net user' kvm command-line option, the guest grml will not have the eth0 device. According to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM/Networking ,----- | By default, if you enable the usermode networking using the '-net | user' command-line option, the guest OS will get an IP address in | the 10.0.2.0/24 address space and the host OS will be reachable | at 10.0.2.2. `----- However, whenever I use the '-net user' option, there will be no eth0 device. I.e., kvm -net user -boot d -cdrom grml-medium_2010.04.iso This I'll get an eth0 device, and an IP for it. kvm -net user -boot d -cdrom grml-medium_2010.04.iso This I won't get the eth0 device. The /etc/network/interfaces file only contains lo device, no eth0. Is it my kvm problem or grml autoconfig's? GRML HD Install is receiving DHCP address, though static is assigned.

List, I've installed GRML on two machines, now. The first went perfectly, updated, everything worked out-of-the-box, and I love it. However, with my second machine, I can't get GRML to allow wlan0 to set a static address (and yes, I have set an address outside of my router's DHCP range). I have changed /etc/network/interfaces to a static address. I have restarted networking, wpa_supplicant, and the machine, and have tripple-checked the interfaces file several times. Eth0's static address worked, and works, like a charm. I have completely commented it out of the interfaces file, to make sure that it was not interfearing with wlan0. In the /var/log/messages file, I noticed a line about Pump being used, though I could find nothing to override or disable it, and no prooff that it was making wlan0 use a DHCP address. Any suggestions you all can provide would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Brandon McGinty

Dear friends at grml, Please forgive the need for something quick, but I have no wired connexion here and need some help. I have have downloaded, I think, the .debs for the broadcom sta driver to my home folder. I need to install grml, after two years, because I did something stupid. Fortunately, my home directory in on separate partition, so how do I: a: install grml while keeping that partition as home? (Had I the internet more than a few minutes a day I could google this stuff...sorry.) b. include the sta drivers as part of the installation. Last time I simply used ndiswrapper, but that was a while ago. If that still works, then I can go that route, but I cannot remember offhand if I can do a complete GRML install and not need a wire ever. c. I am presuming the nvidia drivers still work with grml, and there is not a kernel version that borks that. I inadvertently installed something without really reading it(yes, you make attack my stupidity, I deserve it). I need, as I work in the arts, the very latest flash viewers and so on, but one of the updates to squeeze needed udev which needed a kernel, so instead of thinking, I am now in Panama with no real laptop. Any help to get me into gnome with all my apps via sta, with 3d working would mean a lot. I am supposing that sta is not included on the cd, and, no, ubuntu is not for me, thanks anyway. grml2usb, syslinux and mtools on debian squeeze

Hi list! I'm using grml2usb (0.9.25) from grml repo on a Debian Squeeze system. grml2usb fails with the message Installing syslinux as bootloader sh: mcopy: not found syslinux: failed to create ldlinux.sys That's because syslinux package in Debian Squezze just 'suggests' mtools package. I filed a Bug in Debian BTS requesting syslinux at least to recommend mtools package but it was closed... kernel upgrade

Hello, i am using a germl squeeze with kernel 2.6.31-grml on my asus netbook 1005ha-m. Now i want to install a newer kernel 2.6.33-grml as secodn kernel. I have installed all the modules and the kernel with the aptitude command. After that i have done a update-initramfs -u -t -k 2.6.33-grml, grub2 i have configured. But the kernel will not start the system. I use speakup, so i can not see, what the monitor will display, bevor espeakup iststarted. Must i do a depmod for the new installed kernel? Is there a script included in grml, that will upgrade a kernel automaticaly? Regards. Dietmar

Hi, I did a simple rsync -aHSx --devices --specials / $new_os_mnt/ instead of grml2hd. All seems fine just that the root fs is still mounted read only. what's the trick to turn rsync'ed grml hd image into a normal system, which mounts root fs rw, and mounts other fstab entries as well? Another great advantage is that, I never need to remaster my live system any more just for my own customization -- putting my extra stuff in is just as simple as putting in several modules. My live-usb always contains the latest tools/docs of my own, without going through the live system remastering process. I had about 7 layered modules that I build for slax and I just put them on top of grml. It works perfectly. Further, with stacked live system, you can, for the first time, load grml-small into ram (or grml-medium depending on your ram size), and leave the rest on USB/CD. Most importantly, it'll be much faster. Suppose your stacked live system is layered like the following: 1. All console tools 2. Xorg + lightweight window manager + essential X tools like gparted 3. Heavy weight desktop system (Gnome/Kde) 4. Occasionally used applications (KOffice/Latex) If you limit your self to only certain tasks (say console-only hacks), then you only need a limited number of modules to be loaded; all other modules are not loaded on start up. hence it will start faster, use less ram, and cause applications to run faster. Moreover your CD drive will only seek in a small area (instead of all across the whole CD). You don't even need to load it to ram if the loaded modules can be completed cached by the kernel. This significantly improves the speed. On the other hand, you can enjoy the full fledged desktop applications if you want to, from the very same CD. OK, enough "selling". Let's see how it can be achieved using aufs + grml tools. I'll use the scenario that grml-full is build on top of grml-medium, which is build on top of grml-small as the example. 1. Use aufs to create the stacked framework. The first command creates necessary directories, and the 2nd creates a stacked aufs file system, of which /grml/grml-layers/grml-work is the RW working branch. In this aufs file system, if a file is not available in grml-full, aufs looks in grml-medium, else in grml-small. mkdir -p /grml/grml-live/grml_chroot/ /grml/grml-layers/{grml-full,grml-medium,grml-small,grml-work} mount -t aufs -o br=/grml/grml-layers/grml-work=rw:/grml/grml-layers/grml-full:/grml/grml-layers/grml-medium:/grml/grml-layers/grml-small none /grml/grml-live/grml_chroot/ 2. Use grml-live to build the first layer. CLASSES='GRMLBASE,GRML_SMALL,RELEASE,AMD64' ARCH=amd64 grml-live -a $ARCH -c $CLASSES . . . 3. Now the first layer, grml-small, is available under /grml/grml-live/grml_chroot/, which is the mount point of the aufs file system. We need to move the content from RW layer to the lower /grml/grml-layers/grml-small layer. Note that the final umount and mount is recommended after the move, because the inode number may be changed. aubrsync move /grml/grml-live/grml_chroot /grml/grml-layers/grml-work /grml/grml-layers/grml-small umount /grml/grml-live/grml_chroot/ !mount 4. Install the next layer. This time grml-debootstrap is used instead, to install all grml-medium packages on top of the current chroot system. grml-debootstrap --verbose --arch amd64 --target /grml/grml-live/grml_chroot/ . . . 5. Hi, Can somebody explain the newly introduced bootid option? I know, bootid is used "for verifying the ISO through bootid=.... bootoption" and the logic behind bootoptions and possible combinations: * bootid.txt + wrong bootid=... => fails to boot * bootid.txt + right bootid=... => boots * bootid.txt + ignore_bootid => boots * bootid.txt + no bootid=... + no ignore_bootid => fails to boot * no bootid.txt + no bootid=... + no ignore_bootid => boots * no bootid.txt + bootid=... => fails to boot * no bootid.txt + ignore_bootid=... => boots I mean to ask, - what exactly does the bootid stand for? - how does the file /conf/bootid.txt generated? - how would bootid work with integrating multiple-grml on the same USB? Side question, current grml uses aufs-tools version 0+20090302, whereas the current aufs-tools version is 20100601-1. Is there anywhere I can find this aufs-tools version 0+20090302 that is used to build grml? Help with a new complex installation

Hi list, I was trying to install a stable release of Debian on a new server but I've found that the default kernel that comes with the official installer doesn't recognize the SATA controller that the motherboard has because it seems that is a board newer than the kernel. Then, I've booted the computer with a grml64 and it recognize well the controller and the two SATA disks attached to it. The two SATA disks are of the same type and size. I would like to use Raid1 for redundancy and LVM2 to manipulate the space and add of additional disks easily. I would also like to use XFS to test it since for what I read it's better than reiserfs and ext3 for journaling and performance. So, could you help me with this?. Reading about grub2, it can recognize RAID1, LVM and XFS partitions, but I don't know if it can do it if I use them all together for the "boot" directory. So, on the partition part, should I use a small (128Mb) RAID1+ext3 partition for the "boot" directory containing the initrd file and then the rest with RAID1+LVM+XFS?. How can I use grml to perform all this and have a stable Debian working on this server with this configuration?. Thanks for all. Ernesto

Hi, I get HD write protected warning when launching testdisk. As the aftermath, testdisk can't update the MBR: write_mbr_i386: starting... Hi! I'd like to use the loopback feature of grub2 to boot a grml iso-image that resides on a USB drive. Is there a way to make grub jump to the existing /boot/grub/grub.cfg in the ISO and show its contents as a submenu? When trying the same on the grub commandline, it reboots at "set root=(loop)". So root=loop doesn't seem to be supported... On the other hand, "configfile (loop)/boot/grub/grub.cfg" perfectly jumps to grmls boot menu. But when using this approach, I guess some support in grml's grub.cfg would be needed so that grub can correctly locate the image files. (Maybe a $loop variable prepended to all filenames in grmls grub.cfg, which is conditionally set to "(loop)"?) Any other hints? Hi, I've just submitted a feature request named grml2usb installation structure consideration at http://bts.grml.org/grml/issue874 I'm soliciting your comments are a normal user. Here is the repost of the content of the feature request. Currently, grml2usb install to the destination pen drive with the structure like this: . . . ./live/grml-medium/grml-medium.squashfs ./live/grml-medium/filesystem.module ./boot/release/grmlmedium/linux26 ./boot/release/grmlmedium/initrd.gz ./boot/syslinux/defaults.cfg ./boot/syslinux/grml.png ./boot/syslinux/hd.cfg ./boot/syslinux/isolinux.cfg ./boot/syslinux/grml_medium_default.cfg . . . I.e., every aspect of boot component has been seamlessly mingled into proper places. This is one way to arrange things, proper things go to their respective proper places (referred as plan-A afterward). However, I hope that the installation structure can take another approach -- all files go into a single directory, say /os/grml-medium-2010.04/ for example (referred as plan-B afterward). Here is my view of plan-B and plan-A: - directory structure. plan-B: self contained. plan-A: complicated, distro-specific related files spread arosss multiple directories. - organization: straightforward vs mixed-up. Use /boot/syslinux/ for example, plan-B contains only files originally from syslinux, nothing else, whereas plan-A contains files from all different flavours. - management: easy vs hard. Use deleting a flavour for example, plan-B just need to use a single command to remove (/os/grml-medium-2010.04/); plan-A: so complicated to do it manually that it is better to write another script to do it. - cooperate ability. relaxed vs strict. For example, when I want to try a new grml (beta) release, plan-B allows me to try it out parallel at /os/ grml-medium-newdate/ via for plan-A, the only way is to overwrite the version that I've been accustomed to and left with something risky. Hi, I am trying to modify the grml CD to allow me to include the Dell open management tools. This is so that I can boot from a grml CD and configure the RAID controller on a Dell server. I am trying to follow the instructions on the wiki but I can't mount the squashfs. The error message I get is below. I am trying this on a debian squeeze machine with a 2.6.30 kernel. # mount -o loop -t squashfs ./new/live/grml.squashfs ./loop/ mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so oot@lambeau:~/grml#I have done

I for myself like the way Ubuntu is doing that with http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download We already have a GeoIP setup for our mirrors (being http://download.grml.org/), we just don't have an according integration into our homepage yet. What I'd like to see: * a "wizard-like" download webpage, similar to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download * provide an easy way to choose between the flavours (default to grml-full, 32bit) and stable vs. testing/development versions (release candidates and maybe even dailys from daily.grml.org?) * provide a better integration of checksum (files) and information about flavours * [ your place for innovation :) ] You think you could help us? The GRML kernel for quite sometime now (beginning with release 2009.10 and above) has continued to provide excilent support for my wireless card in a new laptop computer that I recently aquired. I happily have been executing grml-network to configure the wireless card, enable WPA-encryption, and everything else needed to launch primary networking on the GRML CD with the Speakup Linux screen reader, and as of right now am using present available stable release of GRML LiveCD. What I am trying to do is: 1. Install a Debian system (rather than GRML directly to hard-drive) however: 1. Somehow I need grml's kernel (the one compiled for 64-bit support) the present available version to somehow be used in the Debian environment on my hard-drive, because you folks have already taken care of the Speakup modules, and the CPU frequency scailing and other options. I'm trying to figure out to do that, and the second thing I am asking for assistance in doing is: How to insure that WPA works out of the box with the given wireless network I'm trying to use (or that grml-network) will be able to make use out of the Debian system to assist me with this task. Timezone problem

Hi! When booting grml on a system where Windows is installed and the hardware-clock is set to local time I often get annoyed when finding out that the timestamps are all wrong because grml assumes the system is set to UTC. There might be a boot option to fix this ("grml gmt tz=..." ?) but I would prefer such an option somewhere in the start menu. Would that be possible or is there another way for doing that (quickly)? pxe-boot-problems

Hello, i'm using grml the first time, and i run in some problems. I followed this guide http://wiki.grml.org/doku.php?id=terminalserver to boot grml via pxe. My default config-file looks like this: ----- LABEL grml KERNEL linux26 APPEND root=/dev/nfs rw nfsroot=main:/nfs/grml boot=live lang=us nomce quiet apm=power-off nodhcp noprompt noeject initrd=minirt26.gz vga=791 ----- I copied the linux26 and the minirt26.gz file to my tftpboot-directory. PXE-booting worked before. I mounted the grml-medium_2009.10.iso using 'mount -o loop' to /nfs/grml. This path (/nfs) is entered in the /etc/exports and works fine. While booting, i get the message: ------ Could not find kernel image: linux ------ If you look above in my default the kernel is set this way: KERNEL linux26 so, i first don't unterstand the sense of this message, because the kernel is named: linux26 Second, after renaming linux26 into linux, this message don't occurs, but the system is going down, soon. grml-quickconfig behavior

grml-quickconfig currently always shows its menu until q or enter is pressed. This means if you just start to write a text, or press a cursor key after booting you will see multiple time grml-quickconfig. After booting grml now several times i would like to change the grml-quickconfig behavior to exit immediately if a wrong key is pressed. What do you think? Keep the current behavior or change it? Hi, I need to do something I didn't do for years: booting grml from a hard disk without findiso and/or isofrom (since both options don't seem to work when the disk is /dev/cciss/c0d0p1). grml 2009.10: strange behavior of networking script?

Hello. Booting grml on a machine connected by cable to a LAN comprising a DHCP-Server brings up two interfaces, lo and eth0. Both are included in /etc/network/interfaces by means of the "auto" stanza and work just as one would expect. If I prompt # invoke-rc.d networking stop nothing seems to happen. According to ifconfig, both interfaces remain up and the network is still available. If this command is repeated two more times using start and stop as argument, eth0 will be brought down while lo remains up. From now on, invoke-rc.d start|stop will bring eth0 up / down every time it gets invoked with the respective argument. Btw., there's the very same behavior if I prompt /etc/init.d/networking instead of invoke-rc.d networking What I'd actually expect, is invoke-rc.d networking stop to bring down eth0 already the first time. At least, this behavior can be seen on Debian. Thus, I'm way confused. Is something going wrong here? Am I missing something? Anything else? Thanks in advance, Peter Mattern

Oh... it doesnt depend on the kernel version. My second VM with grml 2009.10 kernel 2.6.31 only had the first time started a /dev/fb0 and a decent screenresolution. After grml2hd and reboot i put vga=792 by hand in the grub2 commandline - not in a grub configuaration file! - manually by hand! - there is no /dev/fb0, screen is small. So please help me, how do i configure a working framebuffer? Thanx ;-)

Hi folks, i am constrained to use M$ XP in a training course, but allowed to have Virtualbox. So i took a daily snapshot with debian/sid flavour, 2.6.33 kernel, started succesfully, installed to HD and booted several times. I am not able to change the screenresolution by kernel commandline vga=792. I downloaded 2009.10 too, it starts with vga=791 and the size looks good. Ah: 1) daily snapshot ls -l /dev/fb* -> no such device 2) 2009.10 ls -l /dev/fb* -> /dev/fb0 Looks like 2.6.33 gives me no framebuffer device. Can you help me to get a decent screensize?

(Das ist schon rätselhaft, weil die Netzkonfiguration sehr wohl übernommen wird) Wie gibt man grml Parameter mit? qemu kannn das nicht und tut das nicht. Wer hat am squashfs ausgearbeitet für grml?? trying to replace console-tools with kbd

To set the font in my framebuffer console, I'd like to use kbd, as the consolechars command that comes with console-tools seems to only work with 8-pixel wide fonts [1]. I find `consolechars -f` is unable to load a majority of the fonts in /usr/share/consolefonts. A while back on an earlier grml (don't recall exactly which version), I replaced console-tools with kbd and was then able to load any font in /usr/share/consolefonts using the setfont command. Now (grml2008.11 installed to hd) when I try to install kbd, aptitude wants to remove grml, grml-autoconfig & grml2hd [2]. I don't need grml2hd, but removal of grml is problematic, as this in turn tries to remove lots of other things as well. Is there a recommended way to replace console-tools with kbd? grml-debootstrap problems

Hello, I am trying to install debian using grml-debootstrap but I get an error about it not finding MAKEDEV. I retried but adding the makedev package to /etc/debootstrap/packages but it still fails with the error. Infact it seems like the packages in /etc/debootstrap/packages are not being installed (eg. what is left in the mount point doesn't contain zsh either or commands related to other packages I try and add). This is just using the standard grml 2009.10 CD. It has just occurred to me, I never do anything to update packages on the CD first, was there a problem with the grml-debootstrap on the 2009.10 CD? Boot managers and grml-debootstrap

Hello, If I were to use grml-debootstrap to install a debian system what are my options for boot managers? I normally prefer to install the boot manager in the partition but I believe grub2 doesn't support this. So is there a way for me to install grub-legacy or lilo when using grml-debootstrap or is there a way to get grub2 to install to the partition? Michael Whapples

GRML64-bit Accessibility and Cheatcode questions

Hi all, I was curious if GRML64 is accessible to users with blind disabilities by default, as in the 32-bit world of GRML. Secondly, I had a question: While the newer splash menu works niecly for a person with sight, that new menu servs little use for me. How do I go back to the standard boot prompt without the fancey menu before typing "grml swspeak" (without quotes) at the boot of the CD? I am just curious what I can do. jmicron network card driver installation fails

hi there, I'm running grml with a 2.6.26 kernel on an asus eee box b202 which has unfortunately a JMicron network card. I want to install the driver (ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/jmc2xx/) manually because the driver is not included. As mentioned in the readme .txt I did: apt-get install linux-source-$(uname -r) apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r) apt-get install build-essential After 'make install' I got the following error: make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.26-grml/build: No such file or directory. Stop. make: *** [all] Error 2 Any suggestions? Hi, In the meantime if anyone wants to try the africa install an accessible linux distro and report back on how it works that'll be great. if I get the money over christmas I'll probably buy myself a cherrypal africa to play with. hopefully it will let me wipe the hard drive and install grml, vinux cli or knoppix adriane. I know that ubuntu and vinux gui won't work because they need too much memory but I think adriane and the command line interface or console accessible linux distributions aught to work fine. Josh

How to use GRML to check whether a hard disk is failing

Hello, I am wondering whether GRML can help me here. I have agreed to check a computer (tomorrow) for someone as it isn't booting properly (its a windows XP computer). By the sound of it I suspect the hard disk is failing or totally failed or windows has become corrupted to the point it won't boot. So my question is, how (if) can I use GRML to check whether the HD has failed? I know that the BIOS probably will give suitable warnings, but I am visually impaired and so BIOS is inaccessible to me, GRML is good from that angle as I have a way of accessing a computer without relying on what's on it. Problem with speakup on grml 2009.10

Hello, I have just written the grml 2009.10 CD but I notice that for some reason when I try and boot it with options for speakup with software speech output (either the swspeak option or speakup.synth=soft option) it isn't recognised. The strange thing is it seems to be that when I give an option to enable software speech output with other options then grml doesn't seem to recognise the other options either. Here is what I have done to try and check what happens and also to try and confirm it isn't me: * When this first happened I thought may be it was me doing something wrong (as I get no output at the boot screen) so I tried again but still the same result. * I have written it to another CD (at a slower speed as well) incase something has gone wrong with the CD or went wrong while writing it, still things don't work. * When I give the other options on their own they work fine (the other options are either brltty or blind) * I tried running swspeak once the booting finished and this started software speech output. * I rebooted again specifying swspeak and blind at the boot prompt (still nothing, expected from previous attempts) I then checked /proc/cmdline and dmesg to try and find out what it says I gave at the command line, none of the options I gave were there. I am now stuck as to why this is happening. Also I notice (this is on my laptop) the keyboard layout by default is not anything like I have known in the past (I believe US keyboard layout is normally the default but this has things like shift+0 as =, what on the UK keyboard is / as -, the UK keyboard ? is ?, shift+7 gives /, and a number of symbols I don't even recognise appear on other keys). Hi, I tested a few antivirus engines in the last weeks and I wanted to summarize what I found out (all engines I tested could be used on a GRML live CD which is very cool) but it seems I cannot create pages in the wiki? So, I just post the stuff here: ===== Running antivirus software on GRML 2009.10 (Hello-Wien) ******************************************************* This is a list of antivirus software that has been tested to work or not work on GRML. Fortunately, all software I tested worked on GRML 2009.10 (which was quite different when I did this test a year ago). But of course that was not GRML's fault. ClamAV ------ Clamav has the advantage it is included in grml. Unfortunately as of writing this, the scan engine is not the latest one available. You can scan anyway, a few of the newest signatures will not work, though. Update command: freshclam scan command: clamscan /mnt/somewhere Avira ----- Avira is free for non-commercial use and a free 30-day trial is available for commercial use. Cannot add grub to new partition for grml.

I tried to install grml2hd and all worked fine until I tried to add grub to the /dev/sda16 partition and the grub install failed. Error was that I had to force the grub because it was a BAD idea to load grub that was not at the mbr???? . There is a grub-install with the grml64 live edition but it failed, too. Stephen J. Hi The guest additions and modules need to be installed on Windows 7. grml does not know that it is inside virtual box. I am not able to share-folder on host machine, a step before i am not able to install Guest-Addition on my guest-os, i click devices>install guest addition, nothing shows up. Some post said i need to install some kernel-patch in grml. anyone any idea. Hi, wow I did not know I could read the linux cookbook online until I did a google search for it and found it online. But here's a problem I need to overcome, and if anyone has already overcome this being blind, can you share how you did it? Hi, Sometimes we have ~4T storage and I want to boot from this GPT http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUID_Partition_Table The new grub should be able to handle this but I haven't seen a distribution which use it ;-( Maybe there is another bootloader for linux which is able to boot from such a disc? Hi, As always, the first thing I test on Grml 2009.10 is its frugal installation, using grml2usb. I found it still not applicable to me because I need to frugally install grml to a self-boot ext2/3 partition. grml2usb --grub fails because grub2 installation to PBR is still broken. http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/3293/screenshotgrub2pbrnok.png Using syslinux bootloader failed for me as well because syslinux refuses to work with ext2/3 partitions. http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/1411/screenshotsyslnok.png I guess that the new "dd-able ISO" feature does not apply to me as well since it requires FAT partitions as well, I believe. I guess the only option left for me is to install grub-legacy within the live system now. No complain. I guess not everyone is fond of grub as myself, and even fewer believe that "every OS on the disk trying to take over the MBR" is a bad idea... Well, grml2usb has improved a lot. GRML's udev and Debian's udev

Hello, I have been intending to ask this for sometime but never quite got round to it. On my GRML HD installation when I have been upgrading packages I keep getting a conflict involving udev. It seems to be that libgudev (probably is something to do with the gnome packages I have installed) depends on libudev0 >= 146 but GRML provides libudev0 0.141-1grml.04. This raises a few questions: * Would it be safe for me to upgrade to the Debian version of udev, I have held off as udev is quite core to the system and I don't want to really mess up my system. * Why does there seem to be a difference in the Debian package numbering and the GRML numbering (GRML seems to be providing 0.XXX where as Debian seems to have XXX, surely the versions don't differ as much as this suggests). * Would it be possible for GRML to provide a suitable updated udev package to match the Debian one? alien /usr volume and grml

Hi, I remember long time ago there will be problem having /usr volume in a separated partition -- back to RedHat 6.0 days, when the system would not boot. I guess there won't be any problem any more nowadays, but just want to be sure, and know what factors should be considered when making the move. E.g., the last 2 parameters in /etc/fstab (dump & proc) should be 0 0, correct? How about if I make /usr a symlink to a folder on another volume? E.g., will normal package installation/removal be ok with a symlinked /usr? Easiest way to install Debian with grml-debootstrap

Hi. I've heard a lot about grml-debootstrap, GRML's debian installation script. I am assuming this does not install sid (but stable) Hear is what I was wondering. 1. What is the easiest way to get a debian installation going with it, (as I am no Debian exbert) and will be using the Speakup support in GRML) 2. Is it difficult to get the isntallation done? 3. How can I get a grml-kernel (because it includes speakup) downloaded into the new Debian isntallation, as the stock kernel will not talk out of the box. I could do the manual work of installing via git with linux.speakup.org, but would rather not. Thanks again, all! My final question: What happened to grml? development seems to be not happening, nothing was released in september, and now October is coming to a close. I would like an explination from the leader of grml as to why this has been happening. The roadmap still shows whatever it was...so.. Thanks again. Happy CD developing. Regards, --Keith

grml2hd on daily sid and squee

Hello, i want to install the daily build of grml sques install onto a partition of my asus eeepc 1005ha-m, so i downloaded the daily build of 4. october and put it onto a usb-stick. I start grml from the stick an start brltty and swspeak. I have edited the /etc/grml2hd/config for my needs and run grml2hd GRML2HD_NONINTERACTIVE=1 and/or GRML2HD_NONINTERACTIVE=1 grml2hd but that produces some errors in line 114 115 and some other lines unexpected .. Sorry, that i can not write teh whole errormessages here. What is the correct command for grml2hd to install noninteractive with edited config-file in /etc/grml2hd? Or is there an another error? I have also tested the daily sid, but with the same errors. Regards and thanks for yor help. Dietmar

Attatching the minicom output. It gets to a point where it "Write protecting the kernel read-only data: 1412k" and it stops. Any ideas? At the top of the minicom output are my grub boot loader setup.

Installing GRML-Medium in VirtualBox on Windows 7rc

Hi grml fraternity, I have used linux for almost 10 years, only used as a production system (distro-enthu), so not much of kernel stuff. A med-skilled developer with 4-5 yrs of exp in network programming. I have installed win7, with virtualbox in it. i need a linux, which is smallest in size, lightest in running, provided it provides best development tools for network programming and monitoring. I used grml couple of year ago at Politecnico Di Torino, for network security class (recommended by a prof), didnt use it after that, but i guess it serves a very good purpose of network development and network monitoring. Installing in Virtual Box. i am not able to install the grml-medium to my harddisk in virtualbox. when i enter grml2hd, after couple of disclaimers it says, no parition found. Has anyone installed grml to hdd in virtualbox. how do i go about it. any help and pointers. regards Vivek Sharma

Hello, i want to upgrade my kernel from 2.6.23 to 2.6.31. So i upgrade my grml on my external usb-harddisk as follows: 1. strat grml 2. edit /etc/apt/sources-list and set the germl and debian to unstable 3. aptitude dist-upgrade 4. install the kernel 2.6.31-grml wth this modules as described in an earlier mail from mika 5. update-initramfs -c -t -k 2.6.31-grml 6 starting from dos with linld097 image=vml2631 initrd=i2631.gz "cl=root=/ dev/sda5 speakup.(or _)synth=apollo blind nodhpc vga=normal" But the system will not start. If i unpack the initrd-file, i did not found the speakup-modules. What must i do to become speakup to work with my apollo-synthesizer? Regards Dietmar

My DHCP client isn't started automatically anymore

Hi, since a safe-upgrade on 08.10.09, dhclient3 does not start automatically anymore. I use a router )Fritzbox), which is connected via USB to my machine. The hardware gets detected properly, and I have activated DHCP on the Fritzbox. The internal IP has not changed. Reconfiguring the network via grml-config results in turning on the client, but specifying the startup of dhclient at boot, fails. Although I answer this question with "yes", the client doesn't start with the boot procedure. The config script exits with code 1 shown at the prompt, but there are no error messages on the screen. The only thing that works is to include the networking script into the startup procedure by: update-rc.d networking defaults This was not necessary before. The client's binary has the date of 05.10.09, although the problems came up yesterday. I include the contents of my /etc/network/interfaces here: auto lo eth0 iface lo inet loopback iface eth0 inet dhcp Any hints? Hermann

Boot loaders

Hello, In the past I have always used lilo for my boot loader, partly due to lilo being the first boot loader I learnt and so never really gave much time to learn grub and partly due to having knowledge on how to get the boot loader screen of lilo to beep when it appears (information on the GRML wiki about accessibility). Last night I came across one of the problems with lilo and I believe grub might be able to solve this. The problem was that the GRML kernel I am running (2.6.31-grml) was updated by apt in an upgrade. I forgot to run lilo before rebooting and so my system became impossible to boot from the HD. At some point in the past my BIOS settings had been lost and so my CD drive is now on a lower priority than the HD for booting (not being able to see, I can't use the BIOS by myself to correct the BIOS boot order, so I had no way to correct the problem). I believe grub allows the user to enter a command at the boot screen and so boot any device (not quite sure where I have seen this but I think it may even have been here). My questions: 1. Am I right about grub being able to accept commands at the boot screen allowing booting of anything (even if it isn't in the menu list)? 2. Is it possible to get the grub boot screen to beep like the lilo one as described in the accessibility information on the GRML wiki? 3. Have you got any extra reasons you would suggest changing to grub from lilo or is there a different boot manager you would suggest? Michael Whapples

Hi pals, I have just installed grml_2009.05 on vmware on macosx. Yeah, it's awesome as always. Thanks so much, the grml team. You just make me addicted to grml already. I have one problem (or it may not be a problem) with rxvt. I grml-x wmii. I then "alt+p => rxvt". I get a weird rxvt (for me). It opens up an rxvt with some tab/menu on the top most of rxvt window. It runs in as if it is in a floating window although my wmii should make it in a tiled way. I can't even make it active on rxvt window which simply means I can't use it. Is there anything wrong? Hello Mika, i have spend a lot of time, but it will not work for me to upgrade from 2.6.23-grml to 2.6.28-grml. So another question. I want to use my installed grml on a asus eepc 1005ha-m. I have search via google and found some hints to use kernels greater 2.6.30. which of the daily builds will use such an kernel and can i upgrade the distro via changing the settings in /etc/apt/source-list and a aptitude dist-upgrade ???? Hello Mika, thanks for your answer. I have done a update-iniramfs -c -t -k 2.6.28-grml After that i started the kernel with this initrd from dos (i allways start from dos with linld097.com. The kernel loads and stand than in the initramfs. I did not hear any output from my apollo synthesizer (boot-option speakup_synth=apollo). I have unpacked the initrd.img-2.6.28-grml and looked for the speakup- modules, but he modules are not in the initrd.img-2.6.28-grml. On the system the modules are in /lib/modules/2.6.28-grml/extra/speakup/ How can i add this modules? Unpacking with gzip -dc initrd.img-2.6.28-grml | cpio -i copy the extra folder into the 2.6.28-grml directory and then find . | cpio -o -H newc | gzip -9 >initrd.img-2.6.28-grml will produce a new initrd, but speakup will not work and the system will not boot. How can i do a depmode for the not running kernel 2.6.28-grml? thanks for your help. Regards Dietmar

If i do: aptitude install linux-image-2.6.28-grml only this package will be downloaded and installed, but no drivers from grml. Hello all: How can I boot a GRML installation from the Live CD? I have a GRML installation on the 3rd partition. When running from the Live CD the partition is identified as /dev/sda3. I did not want to install the boot loader to the MBR of /dev/sda so I installed LILO to /dev/sda3.

No Does the sound work? Yes, the speaker-test works. Does pressing the volume hotkeys raise, lower and mute volume? Yes for raise, lower volume -- there is dialog appearing on screen showing the current volume. But mute doesn't work. Does pressing the sleep button cause the machine to sleep? No Is CPU frequency scaling supported? No sudo invoke-rc.d powernowd start shows the error required sysfs object not found. ............................................................................ The most important thing to note is that, all above things don't work under Grml Medium works fine out of box in Unbunto. Most of them are fundamental features, IMHO. GRML always writes a core file when shutting down/rebooting

Hi, when I shut down/reboot my system, I get a core file written in /. Since this is happening repeatedly, there is a pretty large amount of drive space wasted. Can anyone confirm/reproduce this behavior, and does anybody know what causes this? How can I stop this? Hermann --

Having a way to set default X session manager

Hello, Currently when GRML is installed to HD it creates the user home directory with a .xinitrc file with a window manager (looking closer at alternatives it seems this really should be called x session manager). This makes it impossible for a system wide default window manager to be set. I remember that slackware offered a feature where a default system window manager could be set and such a feature would be useful in GRML. Obviously should a user want to use something other than the default then they can do so by running grml-x or manually create the ~/.xinitrc file. Would it be possible to add such a feature? Hello grml users! You are probably aware of the fact that grml ships a pretty big zsh setup. It is quite likely, though, that nobody - including us developers - knows every function, keybinding or feature the setup implements. That's why a manpage was started for it in order to create a reference manual about the setup. A reference card for the zshrc exists already, but that is rather brief due to... well being a reference card. The basic skeleton for the manpage is ready. I described a few features and began a reference section. However. Writing a complete reference for our setup is a big and tedious task. I personally don't use the setup myself, which doesn't exactly help matters either... And there are still numerous functions, aliases, variables and options, that need to be documented. So, to cut a long story short: Help!1!! :-) No, seriously. If you are interested in helping writing that manual, please contact us at: grml-etc-core(a)grml.org ...so we can coordinate the work (and possibly avoid doubled work if a lot of people are willing to help). Every little bit would help, so don't be shy. :) In order to get a local version of the repository that keeps track of the manual do this: % git clone git://git.grml.org/grml-etc-core.git % cd grml-etc-core % git co -b zshrc5 origin/ft/zshrc5 % cd doc After that you'll see a file called grmlzshrc.t2t which is the markup source of the manpage. The markup language used is txt2tags and the needed package is just one 'aptitude install txt2tags' away. It's a pretty minimal language, that is quite easy to use - the existing content will give you a very good idea of how to achieve different things using txt2tags. To generate roff (the man-format in a .5 file) and html versions of the manual (to see what your changes look like) just run 'make' in the doc subdirectory. If you can spare a few minutes of your time to contribute, please send us a message to the aforementioned address and we'll see how to go on from there. grml install on SD card

Hy, I want to do the HDInstall to a SD Card wich is inserted in a eeePC901 SD-Card Slot. When I boot up from an USB-Stick with the grml Live-Image and choose HDInstall all seems to be Ok. But after reboot grml always failed to load (no OS found). I also tryed to install the bootmanager into partition /dev/sdd1 and MBR of /dev/sdd but no effekt. The internal SSD I do not want to have edited with the bootmanager. If I look on the SD-Card there seem to be all files. Is there a way that this could run? best regards Henrik

Hi! I wonder about the hardware requirements for grml and couldn't find anything in the wiki and in the mailinglist-archive so far. The reason why I am wondering is, because I have a very old laptop (IBM Thinkpad 600E, Mobile Pention II, 228 MB RAM) on which I tride to run the live CD and failed so far. There is always the same error: IO APIC resources could not be allocated. RAMDISK: incomplete write (-28 != 32768) 4194304 invalid compressed format (err=1) Kernel panic- not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(253,0 Other live CDs work, though: Knoppix 3.7 (*not* 3.8), Sidux Chaos (dated February 2007) and even Ubuntu 9.4 Desktop. Any idea if I could make it work and how? On my more recent Ideapad S10e it boots perfectly but it seems that the built-in WLAN is not recognized (the Windows device manager says it is a Broadcom Device, I'll try to find out more) Regards, Jutta

Hello, Hallo, i need some help. I have delete a directory of my /home directory with a lot of data. Einfacher ist es für mich in deutsch zu beschreiben, was passiert ist, Sorry. Meine grml-Installation ließ sich booten, beim Booten wurde mit einer Fehlermeldung, dass der Superblock fehle, eine maintenance-shell gestartet. Da ich in einem /home Verzeichnis wichtige Daten hatte, habe ich den Rechner runtergefahren und grml vom usb-stick gestartet und die Partition /dev/hdb7 (auf der das grml installiert ist) gemontet. Warum auch immer, ich habe nach dem Mounten das Verzeichnis /home/volksbank gelöscht, anstatt es zu kopieren und zu sichern. Die Partition /dev/hdb7 habe ich seitdem nicht mehr benutzt, keine Daten darauf geschrieben, bzw. das grml-System von dieser Partition gestartet. Wie kann ich das Verzeichnis /vhome/volksbank und dessen Unterverzeichnisse und Dateien wiederherstellen? Ich bin mir nicht sicher ob ich die Partition /dev/hdb7 als ext2 formatiert habe, wie kann ich das herausfinden? Vielen Dank für Eure Hilfe und das Verständnis, dass ich hier mein Problem in deutsch beschrieben habe. MFG Dietmar Segbert

suggested re-work of myconfig, GRMLCFG, config, debs and scripts

Hi, this is what I recently filed in the BTS as issue715, and mika said that it may be a good idea to discuss my suggestion here as well. The interaction between GRMLCFG, myconfig, scripts, debs and config is incredibly byzantine to me. It has clearly grown, but I'd like to have some more features which would be available by a re-work of the semantics. I would like to see the following behavior implemented: - debs, config and scripts are always searched and read from the same place ($dcs-dir). Which place this is varies, depending on GRMLCFG, noautoconfig and myconfig. - debs are searched in $dcs-dir/debs. If debs=foo is given, foo is taken as a shell wildcard for the debs being installed, paths are allowed and relative to $dcs-dir. - config archives (config.tbz) are searched directly in $dcs-dir. If config=foo is given and foo is a file, that file is unpacked and its content taken as configuration archive. If config=foo is given and foo is a directory, the contents of the directory tree is copied over the live CD configuration. paths are allowed and relative to $dcs-dir - scripts are searched in $dcs-dir/scripts. If scripts=foo is given and foo is a file, that file is executed. If scripts=foo is given and foo is a directory, all files inside that directory are executed. Paths are allowed and relative to $dcs-dir. - If no GRMLCFG partition is found and noautoconfig is _not_ given on the command line, nothing is changed and the dcs files are searched within the .iso, $dcs-dir is set to the root directory within the .iso - If a GRMLCFG partition is found, $dcs-dir is set to the root of the GRMLCFG partition unless noautoconfig is set. If noautoconfig is set, $dcs-dir is set to the root directory within the .iso. - If myconfig=foo is set on the command line, $dcs-dir is set to foo, even if a GRMLCFG partition is present. I tried to craft this new behavior not to break mainstream configurations while some more exotic schemes now need different handling. It also has the advantage of having similiar definitions for scrips, debs and config which will probably allow some code to be re-used for all three cases. Please indicate whether you find this behavior acceptable and desireable. If this new behavior would break a setup you use, please say so as well. I believe this new behavior can be implemented alone by changing /etc/init.d/grml-autoconfig and/or /etc/grml/autoconfig.functions. Network booting, Terminal Server or PXE

Hi Mika, Just out of curiosity, how do you compare Terminal Server and PXE? I knew the term "Terminal Server" when I knew grml, and only within the grml community. The outside world seems to be interested in PXE instead. So I like to know the reason behind why grml chose Terminal Server over PXE. Here are the homeworks I've done: The only "Terminal Server" I found on the web seems to related with KNOPPIX http://knoppix.manty.net/ http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/KNOPPIX_Terminal_Server But the original author of the wiki document, Rjent, has moved his efforts to working on something else. PXE is backed by Intel and is part of Intels(tm) Wired for Management (WfM) http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/PXE_FAQ The Linux Magazine has written a good article about 'Network Booting' http://www.linux-mag.com/id/1179 Tim Kientzle Tuesday, October 15th, 2002 in which Tim recommended PXE. installing grml onto hard drive

Hello, I am just getting started with grml as of today. I am blind, and would like to install grml onto my hard drive. I downloaded the latest iso image: grml_2009.05.iso After looking at teh menu.lst file, it looks like I need to specify that I use teh grml-hd menu option, but I need to add the brltty and ppossibly speakup parameters to teh kernel, and I am not quite sure how to do that. My second alternative would be to install grml from teh running liveCD once I get brltty and speakup running successfully. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

However, I found that you've mixed the two cases. The wiki should read: To use the persistency feature you need * either a writeable partition with label 'live-rw' * or execute the command 'live-snapshot' then follow the instructions. I.e., both method can get you the persistent feature, but either one is enough. you don't need both. Speeding up udev?

Hi, in former mails I reported a slow boot procedure of GRML, and I couldn't figure out the reason why. In the meantime I found out that udev seems to slow down the whole thing. Deactivating it seems no good solution, since there is hardly any hardware detected; only the internal drives are recognized. But no sound, no network etc. So is there a chance to speed up udev? I didn't find anything in the manual that refers to "speeding up the procedure". Any hints? Hermann --

GRML and debian unstable?

Hello, There's one thing which has slightly puzzled me about GRML, why does it use debian unstable? I can imagine stable is not wanted as it can get quite out dated due to the time between debian stable releases, but why not testing? Why this puzzles me is that due to it using debian unstable problems can occur with package conflicts, broken packages, etc, so leading to it really not being good for those unfamiliar with linux and debian package management. However there are parts of GRML which I feel are good for useability, eg. some of the scripts for configuring the system, like grml-network which is probably the simplest way of configuring a network interface I have found for a text console. Also as a blind user the in built accessibility is something which makes it good for me (some other distros either didn't have any accessibility for the install process, required a separate modified CD (eg. fedora) or in the case of slackware which while providing the accessibility only could use a hardware speech synthesiser for the install). This meant if anyone asked about an accessible install then GRML was good from that angle. However things are changing, vinux has moved towards being debian based and may be now would be my suggestion for a first time users distro with accessibility. Michael Whapples

grml_2009.05.iso and swspeak

I have been trying to install grml_2009.05.iso on a Dell Enspiron laptop from the 2002 era. This computer does work as it does have the last edition of oralux on it with speakup. The speech and Ethernet functions work fine but such things as sound recording and serial communications do not work so I have been hoping that a newer distribution would bring more systems to life. I downloaded grml_2009.05.iso and did the following: Boot the CDROM and wait for things to settle down. type swspeak=espeak and hit Enter. Nothing. I had a sighted person watch and the first thing to hit the screen is a picture of a keyboard and the boot prompt. If I then type swspeak=espeak or swspeak=speechd, the screen goes black and the CDROM drive runs for a few more seconds and then nothing. Am I forgetting something, possibly an en cantation over a frog killed in the first quarter of the Moon or what? I even downloaded the medium image and tried it with the same results. Does the medium ISO image contain any software speech? I did get a 2-year-old grml live CD to talk, but it began spelling any time one tried to go in to the installation routine so so much for that. Any other suggestions as to what to try or do I have some part of the procedure wrong? Many thanks. Hi mika, Would you please write something about Kvm? Searching the keyword Kvm didn't result good hist in mlist archive and wiki. I use to test new grml releases with VMware (the thing I hate most is to reboot my box just for the testing), but installing VMware into the newly installed grml every time has been a pain. I like to streamline the testing/using grml with kvm if possible. So I want to know how to install/config kvm, and test new grml releases with it. speakup.synth boot parameter and grml2hd

Hello, I noticed that in grml2hd when it prompts you for which boot parameters should be used for the append line it gives the speakup one as speakup_synth although now grml uses speakup.synth, therefore users can't add speakup.synth to an installed system through the interface, they have to do it manually using the boot loader. I noticed this when using a grml 2009.05RC2 CD (I know that grml 2009.05 has been released but I had the rc2 CD to hand when I needed to perform the install and I have just updated grml2hd on my system and examined the source code and this bug seems to still be present). vol boot option overridden by any boot option which implies sound

Hello, I noticed that when I use boot options which imply sound as they give speech messages in the boot process (eg. swspeak, brltty, etc) then the vol option for setting volume level doesn't work (IE. volume always ends up being 90%). This is a problem when using a system with no physical volume control (eg. a laptop using internal speakers). This is using the grml 2009.05 CD. Michael Whapples

Bug with setting passwords when installing using grml2hd and grml-debootstrap

Hello, I noticed that yesterday when I did an install of debian using grml-debootstrap it seemed to fail to set the password of the root account, it seemed to just print out the help message of the chpasswd command. This was using grml installed on a USB drive using grml2usb and the ISO image of grml 2009.05. I also encountered the same when I did the grml2hd installation using the RC2 CD. The only way I was able to log in to the installed system was to boot grml again, mount the drive where I had done the installation and remove the x from the password field of the /etc/passwd file and then reboot back to the HD installation and log in without a password and then set a new password (there may be another way but this is the one I am certain of). This seems like a critical bug to me as by default it seems grml2hd and grml-debootstrap leave the installed system unuseable. Michael Whapples

Extraction of the small and medium flavors from the full one.

Hi, now that the grml2iso from git is working, I was wondering is there's some way to create the small and medium images from the full one. For example, if I want to create a DVD with grml, grml-medium and grml-small on it, I'll have to download the 3 flavors even when the grml one also contains (in some way) the other two. So, if we have some way to extract the small and medium flavor from the full one, we could save some bandwidth from the mirrors. I guess that the other option is to create the images using grml-live with a local mirror so the packages are only downloaded once. Another option could be to create differential squashfs from small to medium and from medium to full, and place the three squashfs on the full CD so when you chose full for example, the system will mount the three squashfs together using unionfs to create the full version. I don't know if it's possible or if you can understand what I trying to explain, but I think could be an interesting idea. Anyway, we should also consider the performance issue of stacking several squashfs with unionfs. Greetings. Ernesto

Creating a bootable DVD using grml and grml64

Hi, I'd like to create a bootable DVD from the ISOs of grml and grml64 so I can boot whichever of the two flavors or even aggregate the rest of the ISOs to the DVD (small and medium for i585 and amd64). I tried to use grml2usb doing this: 1) dd if=/dev/zero of=dvd.iso bs=1M count=2000 2) losetup /dev/loop1 dvd.iso 3) echo -en "n\np\n1\n\n\nt\n6\na\n1\n w\n" | fdisk /dev/loop1 4) mkfs.vfat /dev/loop1 5) grml2usb grml_2009.05.iso grml64_2009.05.iso /dev/loop1 But it didn't work. There's seems to be some problem when installing the bootloader. What did you think?, Is it possible to do what I want?, should I use grml-live to create custom ISOs?. I would agree. As far as I know for self voicing emacs there's either emacspeak which requires either a hardware synth or viavoice which is commercial, or speechd-el which can use speech-dispatcher, so speechd-el and speech-dispatcher seems to be the best free solution for software self voicing of emacs. In most other cases (eg. you mention brltty) there are alternatives (eg. brltty I thought can use espeak directly). I would like to accept speech-dispatcher as the obvious choice for speech output but unfortunately its problem with crashing from time to time (I think it was you Hermann who said it has something to do with its ALSA support) makes me personally want to back away from it. Although I have my personal feelings on speech-dispatcher I accept there are reasons to use it so would say it should stay if possible. I got Espeakup finally to work

Hi, just let you know: Espeakup now works in German. I had to pull the latest from GIT, and after compiling I had to type: espeakup -V de or espeakup --default-voice=de Note: You can replace that "de" by any non-English voice. I got the tip from the Speakup list archive. Question: Is it possible to replace the 0.4 by the latest version (0.60)? Second note: the modified characters file is still needed. Hermann --

The installed GRML boots very slow

hi, i have installed the latest grml (schluchtenscheisser). everything was working out of the box and i upgraded (aptitude safe-upgrade) to the latest packages. after a reboot everything was working. after another reboot udev doesn't work anymore (it hangs at populating /dev) and i have to boot with 'noudev' to get it to start. but now i can't access any device like the nw-card, or usb-stick anymore. does anyone know about that problem and how to fix it ? thx, markus.

Why does GRML mix up the stable and teh unstable branche in apt?

Hi, a few weeks ago, I installed Gnome on my GRML 2008-11. Since Gnome shipps a lot of updates, I got a lot of stuff from the unstable branche of the repo. This results in screwing up my system, especially Gnome. So I commented out the unstable branche and removed comment chars from the testing branche; the stability was much better. But due to the lack of performance I finally got rid of Gnome. But the question stays: Why is stable and unstable mixed up on GRML, instead of including the testing branche? With one exception, this mixing caused no problem on the text console. Hermann --

Speakup and non-ascii characters

Hello, This is in response to an email by Hermann, I am not doing it as a reply as I get messages as a digest and lost the original message. First thing to note is that speakup as far as I know has its own character table which it uses for pronouncing characters when saying individual characters (eg. spelling, cursoring over characters, etc). This table can be found in /sys/modules/speakup/parameters/characters and so can be edited there. Speakup by default lists characters up to value 255, although values beyond 127 depend on the encoding used (eg. latin1, utf-8, etc) for the actual definition. As far as I know espeakup doesn't modify this table, speechd-up can replace the tables or leave them alone (there is an option for speechd-up to specify this). One way to fix this is to create a script to modify the table or copy a new table into /sys/modules/speakup/parameters/characters and to do this on start up. Does this help? Michael Whapples

GRML does not boot on all machines since version 2008-11

Hi, since version 2008-11 I cannot boot the live CD anymore on one of my machines - my desktop computer - a PC bought at the German computer store Vobis. They use noname components, but the computer contains an AMD Duron processor of 1 Ghz and has 256 MB RAM. All former GRML-Versions, including the 2008-11 release candidate did boot well. On my notebook - Acer 1600, Intel processor 2,7 Ghz, 512 MB RAM, I can boot every GRML CD. After taking a long time, the CD seems to hang, and because I'm blind, I cannot check out what is written on the screen. Is there a way to redirect the output, for example to a file on a floppy drive? And, most important, waht is the reason for this? I use the GRML CDs to backup and restore my systems via partimage. Any hints? Hermann --

Hi, perhaps this is better written to the Speakup list, but I'll try to put this here: When using Speakup together with Espeak either via Speech-dispatcher with speechd-up, or together with Espeakup, The speech does not recognize all characters correctly: Most annoying are the German umlauts, which are not recognized at all by Espeakup and only partially by speechd-up. In the latter case I can hear them when typing and continuously reading, but they are pronounced wrong when deleting them and when moving char by char via the cursor-left-right keys. For Example: "ü" is "power" and "ä" is "sigma". Moreover: An "a" is spelled as "aik", and all punctuation chars and numbers are in English. Most unusable is Espeakup, where it is impossible to read a German text. What is the experience of other non-English Speakup users? Note: It is not an Espeak problem, because when I use it with Speech-dispatcher and the speech functions, provided by the screen readers Brltty and Suse-Blinux, they work well. Hermann --
