How to verify daily snapshot downloads

Hello, today I've taken a look at a daily image for grml.org and found no way to verify that the image I'm downloading actually is from your build machines. http://grml.org/daily/ leads me to something like http://daily.grml.org/grml64-full_testing/2017-04-19_05-31-21/ where there are no OpenPGP signatures available. and the https variant or the url does not show the files. This is a problem because a downloader like can be attacked by serving a different iso file and the corresponding checksums. To prevent this attack you could a) also use https on the daily.grml.org server b) Use a new OpenPGP build-key without password, publish the pubkey on the https mainsite and use the key in the automatic building process to generate the detached signatures. Grml via ipxe's sanboot

Dear list, I'm trying to boot GRML over ipxe's sanboot. It fails when mounting root: Begin: Mounting root file system ... (initramfs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system This is probably no surprise because sanboot is similar to booting using memdisk but without a download delay. mika wrote in "Booting ISO images from within GRUB2" (http://michael-prokop.at/blog/page/3/) "The good news is that Grml supports the memdiskfind/phram/mtdblock approach out-of-the-box." Meaning you do something like modprobe phram phram=memdisk,$(memdiskfind) modprobe mtdblock as mentioned here http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/MEMDISK#Linux. But memdiskfind returns nothing. My ipxe config contains :grmlsan sanboot ${url}/iso/grml32-small_2014.03.iso || goto failed Any hints to boot Grml over sanboot? Jens

clonezilla not working, clock wrong and keyboard issues

Hi there, i set up grml via grub2 and am booting it with the option to copy the entire medium to ram (so that no physical harddisk is mounted). I need grml for weekly full system backups via clonezilla. However when i run clonezilla, as soon as it tries to use the method "dd" to image a partition, it fails and says that it can't find "partclone.dd". I really have no clue as to why this is happening. when i use clonezilla in my ubuntu host, it works fine. Another problem i have is that the clock is always set wrong by some hours. It also seems to change my bios clock, so that my ubuntu host has to update the clock after every boot. Also when i set a german keyboard layout in the shell and start X, it will not keep that keyboard layout and I'll have to set it again. I'm looking forward to any helpful advice :) Thanks! Kai

Hi, I downloaded the daily build two times in a row via wget http://daily.grml.org/grml64-full_testing/latest/grml64-full_testing_latest… http://daily.grml.org/grml64-full_testing/latest/grml64-full_testing_latest… in both cases I had to rename the grml64-full_testing_latest.iso to grml64-full_testing_build1746.iso in order to check the sha1sum which did *NOT* match. $ cat grml64-full_testing_latest.iso.sha1 0fe173c821a9153ed80f754cdd45a7538760167d grml64-full_testing_build1746.iso but $ sha1sum grml64-full_testing_build1746.iso b1d59ce8770d9834c4cc73fffa7fc06e558d65d5 grml64-full_testing_build1746.iso therefore $ sha1sum -c grml64-full_testing_latest.iso.sha1 grml64-full_testing_build1746.iso: FAILED sha1sum: WARNING: 1 computed checksum did NOT match I then downloaded both files again via curl and tested them with same results. Please keep on providing new releases without systemd packages. There is no need for this bloated piece of software for a text based distribution for system admins. Help booting using iPXE

I recently ran into netboot.xyz and, being sad that it didn't support my favorite live distribution filed a feature request <https://github.com/antonym/netboot.xyz/issues/70>. I got an old image I had lying around to boot (specifically, grml64-small_2013.09.iso), but I couldn't get grml64-small_2014.11.iso to boot. When I try (testing in VirtualBox), the startup complains "modprobe: module dm-raid45 not found in modules.dep" and about module "echi-orion" and gets stuck at an initramfs prompt with the message "Unable to find a medium containing a live file system". Booting the same iso directly works correctly. Any advice?

Hi. I want to make a grml cd with some kernel changes and adding some packages. Now, I am using a system based on Jessie, but I want to build based on sid. I tried to install the linux-header package, but it would not install saying it needed kbuild4.1 which cannot be installed. Also, I tried to install the linux-source-4.1 package, but ehe .xz file is broken (unrecognized file format) when using tar Jxvf . How to solve these problems? ssh=password doesn't work

When the syslinux boot screen comes up, am I supposed to type "ssh=password" to start the ssh server? Or is it "grml ssh=password". I've tried both and neither seems to work. how to enable boot from hd after timeout?

Hi grml users, I remastered the grml cdrom in order to backup a windows computer. It should boot Windows form hard disk if the user does not hit any key within a certain amount of time. This is necessary in order to enable remote administration of the windows computer even if the cd rom is in the cd tray. There is this statement: ontimeout chain.32 hd0 0 in isolinux.cfg but instead when the countdown reaches zero one hears a beep and the count down beginns again (for 100 seconds). chain.32 is in boot/isolinux as is isolinux.cfg. Devuan, anyone?

The rather bold and (AFAIK) unasked for Debian switch to systemd is, to me as a sysadmin, problematic. Debian used to be THE stable sysadmin go-to distro, and now I have to choose between multi-user OR LVM; back to Windows pre-RT it is. In Stable, too. Me is sad panda. Or was I, until I switched my main systems to the kfreeBSD Debian port, and my "explore" systems to Devuan (aka "Debian without the systemd madness"). I have been using grml, as a rescue and analysis system, for a while now. I Keep a copy of the old version with all the cruft and the "cave" background photo just for fun ;-) so I'm all for tradition but seriously, isn't now the time to switch grml to a Devuan base, if only to show that sysadmins aren't quite dead yet? grml-live with custom kernel

I believe I have successfully built a grml kernel patched for hardware speech synthesizers. I need to get that into grml-live somehow. What I was thinking of doing was to create a local repository and then modifying the FAI configuration for grml-live to install the kernel from my local repository. Is there an easier way? It looks like you can specify files to be copied to your custom grml image by putting them into a directory tree and then pointing the CHROOT_INSTALL parameter at the tree. But there is no easy way to add/remove packages like that, right? I want to make it as easy as possible for me to make a new custom image whenever the grml development team releases a new version of grml.

I want to make myself a custom grml disk that starts the speakup screen reader automatically. I successfully built a grml iso via grml-live but none of my customizations seem to have made it into the iso. The one thing that made it in is that the iso has my own name. Instead of it being grml_0.0-1.iso, it is vigrml_0.0-1.iso. But the hostname and username I set in /etc/grml/grml-live.local did not take. I don't really care too much about that. What I really want to do is to load the speakup_soft kernel module and run the espeakup command as early as possible in the boot process. Debian puts speakup_soft in /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and runs espeakup via /etc/rcS.d/S19espeakup. I am familiar with fai so I added a class, VIGRML, to the list of classes in /etc/grml/grml-liv.local. It appears to have worked up to a point. My modified /etc/nitramfs-tools/modules file made it onto the grml-chroot. But the module is not loaded when I boot from the iso so I am going to say it did not make it into the initramfs. So this leads me to my next question ... What is the proper use of the grml-live command to tell it to run the fai scripts, then generate an initramfs, then build an iso? I suspect that it cannot be done. I am guessing grml-live installs initramfs-tools and builds the initramfs and *then* runs the fai scripts. So my fai script to put the /etc/initramfs-tools/modules file there was irrelevant. I have to chroot to /grml/grml-live/grml-chroot and rebuild the initramfs via the initramfs -u command. Well, back to the hosthame and username problem... grml virtualbox

I am trying to create a grml virtualbox virtual machine. My problem is that it hangs during the boot from the live iso image. I'm blind so I can't see the screen but I took a screen shot and ran an ocr on it. The last 2 lines say this: a it ganr sgsten hangs nan, disahie udeu uith buutuptiun "nuudeu . a starting the hutplug euents dispatcher: udeud. When grml is booting, at some point it says something like, "If your system hangs now disable something or other". I am thinking that is what is happening. But the ocr is so bad I don't know what to disable. Can somebody tell me what that whole message says? I created the vm with vboxmanage at the command line. So there might be something wrong with the vm itself.
