Hi all. I had a look to the Release Notes for Grml 2011.12-rc1 and something seems very unclear to me : * The accessibility support now consists of shipping standard speakup and enabling sound during boot. A new beep sequence (4 tones) is sounded just before the quickconfig menu starts. (The boot options have been removed.) When I hear the 4 tones, is it time to invoke brltty ? I don't really understand the meaning of « the boot options have been removed». And when shall I choose lang=fr ? Thanks for explanations. -- Ph. Delavalade

HI all. I'm new on this list and new to GRML. Being blind and french, I have to enter the following when booting on the CD : grml blind brltty=pm,usb:,fr@FR lang=fr-iso It is difficult because I don't know exactly when it is boot prompt and I have to do this with a qwerty keyboard instaid of my usual azerty. Mistakes are frequent :-( So, I would like to know if it's possible to avoid the step of boot options. I guess it's possible to remaster the iso but maybe there is something more simple and handy. If it's the only way to remaster, where can I find informations to do this ? Long time ago, I did that with the linuxfromscratch livecd but every step was explained... Upcoming Z-Shell Setup changes.

Hi there, We - the grml team - have recently discussed rather substantial changes in our interactive zsh setup. The setup is quite large, large enough to not be maintainable by our limited resources. Therefore, we will be cutting down its size in the not-so-distant future. The current plan is outlined here: <http://ft.bewatermyfriend.org/tmp/gzcu.org> We might make some of the removed features available as add-ons. A tentative list of ideas is here: <http://piratenpad.de/g1A8PIJkOL> Work on this will begin shortly - albeit in a separate branch of the `grml-etc-core' package's git repository. If there is anything in the removal list, that you'd like to keep, make a convincing argument as to why the feature in question should be kept. After the cleanup is done, we are planning to split the zsh setup out of `grml-etc-core' and into a package of its own, so that users who are only interested in the zsh-setup can quickly install just that on any debian-based OS. [cc:ed grml@ mailing list for further exposure] Hi everybody, starting now, we will ship a different set of Grml flavours and package sets in future releases. (For more background please see the October 2011 meeting minutes.) Our goal is to have one ~300MB ISO flavour which will ship with all the commonly used tools for rescue & deployment tasks. This flavour replaces the old full, medium and small ISOs. Have a look at the (current) package list in detail: http://git.grml.org/?p=grml-live.git;a=blob;f=etc/grml/fai/config/package_c… Note that as we go along changes to this list will happen. If you're missing a tool you're using day to day in rescue & deployment scenarios, please suggest it! The daily ISOs (starting 20111115) from http://daily.grml.org/ already use the new package list, so give these a try. (sid builds fail at the moment, please use wheezy instead.) My problems with my hardware synth are absolutely not grml problems. I've found the same problem occurs with the speakup module in the stock debian kernel in the testing release. There is something wrong with the kernel module for the doubletalk synt starting around kernel 2.6.38. It works in kkernel version 2.6.32 and it works in newer kernels on 32 bit machines. Its only newer 64 bit kernels where the problem occurs. I have not been able to get software speech to work but that's probably because I don't know how to unmute a sound card in character mode. There ought to be a linux package to set a rational configuration for sound cards. There used to be a program called alsaconf but it was dropped from the alsa packages a few years ago. I can't imagine why. It seemed to work like a charm. Anyway, personally, I am satisfied with hardware synth support and braille support. If you say software speech works, so much the better. Although, I think it would be both useful and cool for grml to pplay a little tune through the beep command when its done booting. Like ubuntu has its distinctive drum beat when the GUI is done loading. It would become the grml theme mmusic. I would make it my ring tone. Well if you want nerdy, how about GRML done out in morse code? As for the unmuting of the sound card, I used alsamixer with brltty, possibly not the most efficient combination but it worked for me. Hello, Just a quick note that for what I could test of the medium64 daily build accessibility seemed to work. Here is what I tested: * Let the ISO boot normally on a MacBookPro. * I got nothing to indicate that the CD had finished booting (don't know if that is what should happen currently). I just listened for when the CD activity seemed to stop. * I then tried to start brltty with no options and it started fine detecting my Braille display. * Then I checked sound levels. Everything except master seemed to be muted. As there was one channel labelled front speakers I decided to raise this volume first. Not sure if that is needed but if it is for sound output then may be that needs to be changed so that I will not need to raise that level. * I loaded the speakup_soft module which worked fine. * Started espeakup which also started fine. Things I could not test: * I could not test hardware speech output as my apollo synthesiser requires a serial port and the MacBookPro has no serial port. The MacBookPro is the only 64-bit computer I have. Accessibility: espeakup and ALSA

Hello, I seem to have a memory of a message saying that ALSA sound support in the medium ISO is being considered for removal, although I cannot find the message. Now as accessibility is being put in the medium ISO, the problem is that espeakup and espeak rely on working sound support to be of any use (as mentioned in the festival TTS documentation sound output is desirable, although having no sound card does mean less defects will be heard). I just thought I would bring this point to the attention of the developers, as there is no point in including espeakup and espeak unless sound support is there. Michael Whapples

Accessibility versus Packages

Hi, even if I don't need the discussed accessibility-packages, they seem to me much more important than other packages. As an example I remind on the discussion about TeX/LaTeX some time ago. Unless almost all of the packages are provided it is necessary to install some more. So it is the same to install all of them later. For me the main point is to have that kind of running system to be able to extend it later. I like GRML very much for all the nice programs in textmode. Sometimes I use X11, with a lot of xterms running ... Is it really necessary to provide a graphical VIM? The use of the *-register should also be possible (as a compile-option) in standard VIM. For cease-fire reasons you would have to remove the graphical Emacs too ;-) What's about packages like cowsay? I find it funny but I could live without. GRML could still recommend some of these programs by providing a list with interesting examples. Regards, Konrad

Hi, all the people here on the grml mailing list. Please don't take away accessibility, I'll manage it. You will have to give me step-by-exact step instructioons for how you got it to work that way and I will do it. I can learn, if you will some how show me how to do it. I have a 64 bit machine, so I probably will be best to do the 64-bit version. I just want a system that is all command line and handles current web technologies as well or better than the gnome-orca-firefox combination if possible. Is it possible to rewrite all those graphical applications so that they will work in command line? Can this process be automated? On the other hand, how hard would it be to build a NSA-like system that captures all the contents of the internet and redistributes it in a non-graphical form? Can't the blind community just build or get hold of some kind of supercomputer and then use artificial intelligence to rework all the internet sites into a non-graphical format and then set up a network provider that can be accessed by command-line only users to get the same content everyone else does? That is a research project for the future. If anyone has that kind of computing power available, please direct me to it. If no one wants to do this, theen, can you direct me to a way of getting command line accessibility on the command line in a 64-bit bersion? Please don't take accessibility out of grml. If you will show me just exactly what to do to get it to work and then build an iso, I can manage it. Sincerely: Doug Smith

How are blind grml users handling current web technologies?

, everyone on the list. I am writing this to see how blind grml users are handling current web technologies such as flash and javascript. I am wishing to change back to GRML which I haven't been able to use in years. The main reason is that the gui world is going to change and there have been problems with accessibility. This doesn't, of course happen with good old command line, of course, and I just wonder if some of the blind people using grml now can tell me about their work-aroundds for such problems as flash and javascript. Is it possible to have mplayer be the viewer for all these streaming file formats and get it to work with w3m or edbrowse or whatever: Please let me know if there is something you are doing to handle current web technologies in command line mode and i will be glad to hear from you. iscsitarget and iscsitarget-module-... in grml 2011.05

Hello everyone After still using 2010.12 for a long time, i switched my troubleshooting usb-stick to 2011.05 and tried to export a local drive via iscsi. Sadly this didn't worked out of the box because the kernel module was missing. I checked the packages and found that iscsitarget-module-`uname -r` wasn't installed... After installing this, there was a module version mismatch which required a upgrade of iscsitarget. The module version mismatch is supposedly due to the fact that the packages evolved since the release. But why didn't the kernel module made it into the release when it's needed by iscsitarget that's shipped - and that http://grml.org/kernel/ advertises this module. What did i miss in the whole process? And how do i best prepare for the next use of iscsitarget from the liveCD? Best regards and thanks for all the good work. Ursus

My RSS feed just alerted me to the article "Grml packages in Debian" on the developer blog. http://blog.grml.org/archives/358-Grml-packages-in-Debian.html I would like to point out that removing the packages from grml-testing leaves many people out of updates for a long time (until the packages have arrived in Debian Stable and some Ubuntu release). Plus, the grml2usb page http://grml.org/grml2usb/ still points to grml-testing. Please put the packages back into grml-testing and find a way to avoid a clash with Debian and Ubuntu repositories. Using grub2-dev in grml2usb suggestion for me.

Hi, I work off two USB's when on the road. First is created with grml2usb on 2011.05 and a GRMLCFG partition for persistence. Second is created with grml-crypto for for /home/someuser and /etc/vault. I was about to re-script what I do manually at boot when I discovered grub2 development tree now has a luks.mod (testing needed & i'm willing). I have built it from src and installed into grml-chroot on a squeeze host. I expect to use grml-live per remastering instructions and then grml2usb. GOAL; Phase 1 usb layout; 1 Meg unencrypted boot/decrypt area remainder fat16 encrypted /boot. grml & grml64. Phase 2 Unencrypted boot/decrypt area Remanider lvm2/luks encrypted (for single passphrase at boot) grml2usb partition with several flavors GRMLCFG partition home-rw live-rw home-sn (live-snapshots) live-sn. I plan to contribute it back as either a --luks option on grml2usb or seporate script. Have I missed any issues in reasearch you are aware of ? Is this approach logical ? Any pointers on how to proceede from chroot to usb ? I'm open to any suggestions and could post bata of process as it would need to be tested on more hardware than I have available. Hi I ran into a little trouble trying to install grml onto a usb stick When I ran grml2usb/tarball.sh the first time it was looking for fakeroot so I installed that package and then ran it again I get this error # /home/geordie/grml2usb/tarball.sh awk: cmd. line:1: fatal: cannot open file `grml2usb' for reading (Invalid argument) /usr/bin/fakeroot: line 178: debian/rules: No such file or directory installed grml2usb (0.9.34) unstable; System: Host SatelliteA100 Kernel 2.6.39-1.dmz.2-liquorix-686 i686 (32 bit) Desktop KDE 4.6.4 Distro Debian GNU/Linux wheezy/sid I tried finding the grml2usb in testing however # apt-cache search grml grml-debootstrap - wrapper around debootstrap for installing pure Debian grml-rescueboot - Integrates ISO-booting into grub so I downloaded the git version. I also tired the tarball version and see no changes. I was also surprised to see this loaded into my home folder. I may have done something wrong. Many thanks Geordie

Using development version of grub2

Hi all, I need to test with grub from the developers repository. I have it cleanly compiled on grml-2011.05. How do I "grub-install" it to /usr/share/grml-live/templates/boot/grub? I think from there grml-live will include it in iso for my work. Grub-install wants a /dev/*** to write mbr and I can't do that on this box. hi, a while ago i bought one of the nice 32/64bit dual usb keys and since it is now a bit outdated (the version is from the beginning of 2010 or so) i would like to update it, but i haven't found a procedure in the wiki or anywhere else...and i would like to avoid having to do to much reading of docs and/or doing it by trial and error the hard way. can anybody point me in the right direction? thx yours, albert

Hello, I heard that GRML does automatically recognize RAID-arrays and in addition is able to copy/image all disks of a RAID array to a single image(dd). Is that really the case? How can that be achieved? Thank's a lot in advance for any feedback! Bill

Hello, I'm trying to use the GRML iso image (with grml-rescueboot package) on computers with a special keyboard layout, a french-targeted dvorak-like layout called « bépo ». I found how to setup the console layout, giving « keyboard=dvorak-fr-bepo » in CUSTOM_BOOTOPTIONS variable of /etc/default/grml-rescueboot, but didn't found how to setup the Xorg layout : it's a flavor/variant of « fr » Xorg layout (though it very different from classical french Azerty) ; I can setup in a shell with : setxkbmap fr bepo and following grml's FAQ, I tried « xkeyboard=bepo », « xkeyboard=fr(bepo) » without luck. Could you tell me what syntax can we use in xkeyboard definition, or how to setup my Bépo keyboard layout (if possible) ? Thanks, Fred.

Problem with grml autoconfig

Hello everyone! Maybe this is not the right way to ask general user question (wrong mail list or something) so I'm sorry if made any problems. I have an urgent situation to make ad-hoc openvpn server from usb stick. Using grml for some time as a live cd and recovery tool I think this can be done with grml. So I have openvpn folder with all the necesary stuff, I formatted usb stick in following way: 1. 3GB FAT32 wiht grml on it (grml2usb --bootoptions="nodhcp") /dev/sdb1 2 1GB ext3 with GRMLCFG label with scripts dir and inside it grml.sh script /dev/sdb5 grml.sh script is chmod 755, so executable and readable by everyone. basicaly the content of script is: #!/bin/bash ip link set dev eth0 up ip addr add dev eth0 192.168.1.253/24 ip route add default via 192.168.1.254 #now I wont to copy the folder to rw fs in order to write status files and logs so cp -r /mnt/grmlcfg/openvpn /root/ cd /root/openvpn openvpn --config /root/openvpn/server.conf & echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward #and to start ssh server to access the box /etc/init.d/ssh start The debug output says that GRMLCFG is detected and mounted to /mnt/grmlcfg as ro When booting finished, nothing has happened, as the script had not been run. Can anybody shed some light on this please? Thank You.

Missing mcrypt/mdecrypt

Hi. I just tried to create an encrypted disk image, like this - dd if=/dev/sda bs=1M | gzip | mcrypt > /mnt/backup/blah.img.gz.nc - but it seems mcrypt and mdecrypt are not included in the (full-size) Grml ISO. Any chance of adding those to the next release? I'm not set on using mcrypt; if there's a better way to do this, I'd be interested in that, too. I never store unencrypted data on portable devices (ever since I almost lost one), not even automated backups. But more generally, mcrypt/mdecrypt might come in handy in recovery situations, so it might make sense to include them anyway. Same goes for TrueCrypt, come to think of it. -- stefan

Syslinux timeout and grml2usb

Hi! I'm building a fileserver from an hp ProLiant MicroServer and GRML, with quite a bit of customization on GRMLCFG. While I sweated quite a bit over the best way to add the additional package I required (e.g. bacula-sd), this is not the subject ;-) When I copy a GRML64 ISO to an USB stick, isolinux will do a 30 second timeout. The syslinux with GRML64 will not do a timeout, while one with a 32 bit GRML will. So I suppose usb2linux does something wrong for a 64 bit GRML. In case it matters, this is run on a 64 bit Ubuntu Natty. While I would prefer to use a 64 bit Linux in case I upgrade the memory of the MicroServer to the maximum of 8 GB, I can live with a 32 Bit kernel for now, with just 1GB memory. Hello, i have installed grml on my netbook. I use grml with speakut an brltty. Now i have installed the gnome-desktop with orca. Normally i want to use the textconsoles tty1 to tty6 and start gnome- desktop with startx. So my question: How must i modify grml, so that i have six textconoles an ont tty7 a graphical login (gdm3), so that ic can change with ctrl+alt+f(x) between the consoles? Tanks for your help. Boot grml without CD ends with "No init found"

Hello I have a Proliant DL380G3 that I would like to boot without a CD. The instructions (http://wiki.grml.org/doku.php?id=tips&s=tohd#boot_grml_without_cd) seem clear enough, but alas I'm not successful yet. From the grml cdrom grub screen I can "grml noeject fromhd=/dev/cciss/c0d0p3" and boot successfully. From the grub screen on /dev/cciss/c0d0 I'm not so successful. Soon after displaying the "GRML" ASCII art I get the nasty error: "No init found. Try passing init= bootarg." and a busybox prompt, not a grml prompt. Maybe the initrd borked? Any help with achieving a grml prompt would be appreciated. booting iso directly

Hi, I am using ubcd with syslinux from my usb stick to boot the grml iso from it. This config looks like this: grml.iso (700MB) is copied to my usb stick at /mnt/usbstick/ubcd/custom/grml.iso syslinux .ini file is edited to reflect the iso location I reboot from the ubcd usb stick, and select grml.iso to boot. grml.iso is loaded into memory. Then, the grml boot-screen appears. After just selecting the standard boot, I get an error about a kernel module not being found. I am assuming the issue is that the .iso is simply "lost" but I never understood that while INT 13h call thing or whatever it is called. So I am dropped into an "initramfs"-shell. I have tried the following to get around this: Mounting the grml.iso into /live/image, then exiting: mkdir /mnt mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt mount /mnt/ubcd/custom/grml.iso /live/image -o loop exit However, this didn't work, I get more errors. On a side note, this approach does work for example with the arch linux netinstall.iso, so I am sure it will work with grml, but I guess my issue is I don't know exactly if /live/image is the correct location? Any help greatly appreciated!

Custom user configs on grml

Hi all, grml supports custom configs loaded at boot time via network, local devices or remastered ISOs. I would love to have a basic configuration of my own on vanilla grml. Especially at work, I can't influence who burns what images and being able to rely on having a config that suits me no matter where I grabbed a grml CD from would be extremely useful. Thus, my question: Is it worthwhile to include some user configs in grml? I am aware of the size constraints grml is facing, but RC files tend to be tiny and compress well. mrud is not sure if it's worth the trade-off, I think it is. Great idea? Insane? grml-debootstrap: troubles with debian keyring

Hi list! It happened that I had to install debian squeeze with an old (~1 year) version of grml. When running grml-debootstrap it exited with an error, saying something like "E: Release signed by unknown key (key id AE...)" The solution was to update Debian keyring. apt-get update apt-get install debian-archive-keyring At the first moment I had no clue how to solve the issue. So it would be nice if grml-debootstrap recognizes this error and gives the user a hint on how to fix it. Besides that everything ran fine ;-) greetz, Michael

Creating Live USB with grml2usb

I would like to put grml live cd on usb drive. I created bootable w96 fat32 partition and formatted it using mkfs.vfat. I ran "grml2sub grml.iso /dev/sdb1". I am getting boot error. I tried to create live usb with unetbootin. This worked. Would anyone have an idea what is going wrong? Thanks in advance

Hello, i have installed grml squeeze on a asus eeepc 1005ha-m. I sue speakup and brltty, because i am blind. Now i want to use gnomes-orca with firefox and openoffice with gnome. At the moment i do not have installed gnome. If i do: grml-x the xserver starts, but i can not come back to the textconsole. ctrl-alt- f(x) will not work, also not the ctrl-alt-bacspace to shutdown the xserver. How can i set the xorg correct for the asus 1005ha-m? How can i start the xserver to console tty7? On my system are only the consoles tty1 to tty6for switching between themself configurede, ist that correct? Can i use orca with fluxbox? Thanks for your help and regards. Dietmar

grml for hardware inventorying

Hi. Today I received a mail from a friend asking me if I know any tool to make hardware inventorying and I remember using one Linux bootable from floppy that did that but at tis time is too old and obsolete (and I don't remember its name either :-) ). So, I was thinking if grml comes with some kind of this software that could save the information on a USB or through network. Doing a fast search on Debian repository there's something called "ocsinventory" but seems not to be part of grml (maybe I should remaster a CD with it). And the "hardware detection tool" that you can use at boot time is not usable for this since I didn't find a way to save the information to a device not network so is hard to inventory about 50 computers with it. Trying to boot grml ISO image with grml-rescueboot fails

Hello, I don't know GRML yet, but I've heard about it in Mikas' blog (http://michael-prokop.at/blog/2011/01/07/booting-iso-images-from-within-gru…) and liked to try it, so I installed grml-rescueboot (0.2.0 version) debian package from http://deb.grml.org/ and installed it on my Debian Squeeze system, along with the grml64-medium_2010.12.iso image in /boot/grml directory. I then tried to boot it through the Grub2's menu entry, but it didn't work (using menu, we don't see any error message). I then try to launch every command of the menu entry in Grub2's command line, and it fails in the line : loopback loop "/boot/grml/grml-medium_2010.12.iso" telling it doesn't find this file. I think the 'root' setting is missing, and as I have before Grml a grub menu entry to boot a Windows partition, the last root setting isn't the right one. I've manually set 'root' and then I finally got a new menu, from GRML, and then I tried the 'forensic mode', as I didn't want GRML using my swap partition (I had an hibernated system there), but the debian-live system didn't work. I don't have any clue here as the 'debug' variable wasn't set (and so /live.log was empty), but I'll retry this when I have some spare time). Hope it can help, Fred.

Grub2 install behavior changed? Grml LiveCD 2010.12

I've previously been using Ubuntu v10.10 as my maintenance OS for managing Grub2, but since discovering that Grml's LiveCD environment includes a recent Grub2 release I thought I'd give that a go. Grml is using Grub2 version 1.99~201012221-1" (same as "beta0" right?) While Ubuntu 10.10 reports "1.98+20100804-5ubuntu3". I have my "master grub partition" - which contains my bootable ISOs, persistence files for some of the LiveCDs, and a /boot/grub/ folder. This folder has the results of previous "grub-install" commands run from Ubuntu, as well as a manually maintained grub.cfg. There is no OS in this partition (other than the LiveCD ISOs). Even though under most distros the drive containing this partition comes up as /dev/sde, Grub2 sees it as (hd0), so I've got it set up as my boot device. I also have a second drive (/dev/sdf or (hd1) via grub) set up identically, also bootable and use rsync to back up the partitions' contents after any significant changes (I originally tried to do this as a RAID1 mirror, but ran into problems with some LiveCDs mounting the persistence files from the member partition, breaking the array). Booting into Grml, I map the first drive's grub partition to /mnt/g201, so the grub folder is now at /mnt/g201/boot/grub and run: grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/g201/ /dev/sde At next boot, the loader brings me to a blank grub prompt (not the rescue grub, a full working grub2 environment with root=(hd0,msdos1) as it should be To figure out what the boot loader is doing, I run boot-info-script (excellent tool BTW, should definitely be added to Grml!) and it tells me "Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sde and looks for we." As opposed to my second drive, for which says (much more informatively)" "Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdf and looks on the same drive in partition #1 for (,msdos1)/boot/grub." The latter being normal for a correctly working boot loader, at least as far as Ubuntu is concerned. I then have a look at my first drive's grub partition, and see that my grub-install command from Grml resulted in a whole new grub folder directly under the root /mnt/g201/grub, rather than updating the existing /mnt/g201/boot/grub So I figure this is why the boot loader isn't loading the grub.cfg from my usual /boot/grub - presumably it's looking for a grub.cfg in /grub and of course there isn't one there. So this time I run the command as follows: grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/g201/boot /dev/sde Note the path spec'd to the /boot parent of where grub should go, rather than the root of the device as is usual under Ubuntu. This time the result file for the boot-info-script tells me "Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sde and looks for le." (as opposed for "we" before - WTF?) But the drive now boots up properly into my boot.cfg. So I was able to get it working. Is this an intended behavior change for grub-install, that --boot-directory is now supposed to specify the immediate parent of where I want the /grub folder to go? I hope not, because having a canonical /boot/grub location seems to be helpful in troubleshooting - letting the user put it anywhere s/he likes seems an unnecessary complication. . . It also seems that many of the entries in my grub.cfg no longer are working, so rather than troubleshooting all the other changes between these two Grub2 version, at this point I'm going back to Ubuntu's and hopefully these problems will go away. If I do want to come back to this later, is there a good location for documentation on things the end user needs to be aware of regarding differences between 1.98 and 1.99? Thanks in advance. . .

dupmerge - : Value too large for defined data type

First of all, heaps of gratitude for the excellent contribution, tremendously helpful tool. I really like the way you keep my mdadm raids in order, compared to some of the mangling I see under other "rescue disks" (actually rw-writing the preferred minor?) What brought me to Grml was the fact that you include the dupmerge tool out of the box, but in running it over a large set of video files (around 5 TB at the moment, ext3 filesystem) I'm getting tons of the above error messages on large files (some are up to 16GB). Having such a tool fail on the largest files kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it 8-) I see you're running v1.70, while Sourceforge lists v1.73 as current (as of 2008!), and I see references on the interwebs to v1.74, so consider this if nothing else a request to update. If it's not difficult it's also be great to be able to check out another one or two similar deduplication tools unless you've already checked them all out and consider dupmerge2 the best? Hi, If I dedicate a box for dnsmasq as both dhcp and dns server, can I use pump as dhcp client on the very box to obtain the fixed IP address configured in dnsmasq? Hello I have problems with grml-mutt I have my mail stored data and can easily retrieve mail from the server using POP3. Unfortunately, the folded delivery of mail to any address not. My mail to a TOnline address is ok but not go to Gmail adress, unless I have a gmail mail as coming from "reply" to answer then it goes through?? Hello, i have installed grml on my harddisk. 1. What ist the default consolefont of grml? 2. I want to use a older linux-version of openxp (crosspoint Mail and news). The editior of openxp can not use utf8. If i do term2iso, the program show the menus correct (ae,oe, ue ss). But in the editor the german ue, ae oe or ss wil be not displayed correct. trouble with hard-disk installation

Using Grml2HD I installed Grml_2010.12 on two notebooks, Acer TM4233 (Core2Duo T5500, external (USB) HD), and Acer Aspire One (Atom 260, internal HD). Everything worked fine, so I started 'apt-get update' (with Debian Unstable and Grml Testing included in sources list) and 'apt-get upgrade'. Additionally, I installed some packages not included in Grml (eg. tex-live). Overoptimistically, I did not keep track of the records, and when I realized that, using Xorg-core 7.7, I got frozen X-terminals and blocked input fields in Iceweasel (dead keyboard?), I was unable to find the origin of the trouble. There are no error messages, either in syslog or in Xorg.0.log, and the problem seems to be independent of the window manager (fluxbox, openbox) and the terminal program used (xterm, eterm). Do I really have to do a compltely new installation? Thanks in advance, Vilmar Klemt

Hi, I'm thinking to do the disk partition encryptions now. However "Hard drive encryption sounds like an intimating concept, mostly because it is. The thought of taking your precious files, then using a mathematical formula to convert them into random noise before scattering them back across your disk is a hard sell. The official "Disk Encryption HOWTO" from tldp.org [2] is only dated as 2004-11-17, so I would assume it is *way* outdated. In terms of security, I tend to turn to people that I trust for help. grml custom installation on 1GB USB device ?

Hi grml. My computer has a no-award bios which suffers from problems booting USB-HDD devices. As I can tell I'm limited to a single 1GB partition although iso images installed via dd do boot. Currently I have a usb device which boots kernel with an initramfs ( embedded ) that activates raid ( metadata=1.2 ) and lvm on mirrored sata drives that contain root partition. I would like to replace this initramfs that contains little sysadmin functionality with grml and see a few options of how to realize: 1-grml persistency, but I think my bios constrains will make it difficult to do iso leaving ~300MB enough for home-rw, live-rw, and GRMLCFG ? 2-customizing an existing grml iso image to include a default grub entry that mounts root=/dev/md0 with a fallback to grml ? Other ways or suggestions ? Sven

EXT3-fs: barriers not enabled

Hi GRML. I appreciate your system, have been using since 2008. Recently learned about persistency which I plan to use to replace custom initramfs for booting & maintenance of RAID1/LVM2 systems containing root partitions. I just finished migrating Gentoo from single partition to mirrored ( RAID1 ) and LVM2 volumes. In the process, I learned/realized that the Ext3 filesystems contained within raid/volume group are not enabling write barriers despite being told by fstab to do so. This is 2.6.36 kernel with lvm2 version 2.02.73. I thought to try to grml 2010.12 as well, but problem remains. My question: is there any magic "Start" besides mdadm-raid, lvm that should be necessary ? We can otherwise mount partitions without incident. Does somebody have ext3 barriers enabled by default such that I know it should be realized with 2010.12 ? Appreciatively, Sven

Is nss-ldap missing from grml 2010.04 ?

Hi All, I have been using grml for the last couple of months. I am building a network of about 20 machines, all running grml, and I want them to share a single set of login names and passwords. So I decided to configure OpenLDAP as a service on one machine and configure the other machines to find login+password from this service. I am following the instructions set out at: http://wiki.debian.org/LDAP/NSS http://www.debian-administration.org/article/585/OpenLDAP_installation_on_D… They suggest I use libnss-ldap. But this package seems to be missing from my copy of grml 2010.04. I have also checked the package list for 2010.12 and that does not contain libnss-ldap. This seems a strange omission from grml. It contains slapd to run the service and several clients such as freeradius-ldap, libnet-ldap-perl, postfix-ldap, and smbldap-tools. So why not libnss-ldap? I could install libnss-ldap on each client machine. But then I have to repeat those same steps on 20 machines, which makes it 20 times more likely I will make a mistake somewhere. I tried "apt-get install libnss-ldap" on a test machine. This started updating libc-bin and installing locales, which seemed a good way of breaking the distro. Can anyone suggest a better approach? Should I remaster the CD? Is there some gmrl magic I am missing? Is there a different tool for login+password that is not ldap? Thanks Jonty

root-FS readonly after grml2hd

I just installed latest grml64 sid vi grml2hd and after rebooting from disk /-filesystem ist mounted readonly. Tried it with several combinations of filesystem and bootloader but always the same effect. Any ideas? Hi there, I installed grml to my harddisk and I'm getting a small error during every boot: "mdadm: No arrays found in config file or automatically Mount failed for selinuxfs on /selinux: no such file or directory" I don't know how to fix this. Boot from iso option not working with grub2

GRML HD Install is receiving DHCP address, though static is assigned.

List, I've installed GRML on two machines, now. The first went perfectly, updated, everything worked out-of-the-box, and I love it. However, with my second machine, I can't get GRML to allow wlan0 to set a static address (and yes, I have set an address outside of my router's DHCP range). I have changed /etc/network/interfaces to a static address. I have restarted networking, wpa_supplicant, and the machine, and have tripple-checked the interfaces file several times. Eth0's static address worked, and works, like a charm. I have completely commented it out of the interfaces file, to make sure that it was not interfearing with wlan0. In the /var/log/messages file, I noticed a line about Pump being used, though I could find nothing to override or disable it, and no prooff that it was making wlan0 use a DHCP address. Any suggestions you all can provide would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Brandon McGinty

Dear friends at grml, Please forgive the need for something quick, but I have no wired connexion here and need some help. I have have downloaded, I think, the .debs for the broadcom sta driver to my home folder. I need to install grml, after two years, because I did something stupid. Fortunately, my home directory in on separate partition, so how do I: a: install grml while keeping that partition as home? (Had I the internet more than a few minutes a day I could google this stuff...sorry.) b. include the sta drivers as part of the installation. Last time I simply used ndiswrapper, but that was a while ago. If that still works, then I can go that route, but I cannot remember offhand if I can do a complete GRML install and not need a wire ever. c. I am presuming the nvidia drivers still work with grml, and there is not a kernel version that borks that. I inadvertently installed something without really reading it(yes, you make attack my stupidity, I deserve it). I need, as I work in the arts, the very latest flash viewers and so on, but one of the updates to squeeze needed udev which needed a kernel, so instead of thinking, I am now in Panama with no real laptop. Any help to get me into gnome with all my apps via sta, with 3d working would mean a lot. I am supposing that sta is not included on the cd, and, no, ubuntu is not for me, thanks anyway. grml2usb, syslinux and mtools on debian squeeze

Hi list! I'm using grml2usb (0.9.25) from grml repo on a Debian Squeeze system. grml2usb fails with the message Installing syslinux as bootloader sh: mcopy: not found syslinux: failed to create ldlinux.sys That's because syslinux package in Debian Squezze just 'suggests' mtools package. I filed a Bug in Debian BTS requesting syslinux at least to recommend mtools package but it was closed... kernel upgrade

Hello, i am using a germl squeeze with kernel 2.6.31-grml on my asus netbook 1005ha-m. Now i want to install a newer kernel 2.6.33-grml as secodn kernel. I have installed all the modules and the kernel with the aptitude command. After that i have done a update-initramfs -u -t -k 2.6.33-grml, grub2 i have configured. But the kernel will not start the system. I use speakup, so i can not see, what the monitor will display, bevor espeakup iststarted. Must i do a depmod for the new installed kernel? Is there a script included in grml, that will upgrade a kernel automaticaly? Regards. Dietmar

All seems fine just that the root fs is still mounted read only. what's the trick to turn rsync'ed grml hd image into a normal system, which mounts root fs rw, and mounts other fstab entries as well? Another great advantage is that, I never need to remaster my live system any more just for my own customization -- putting my extra stuff in is just as simple as putting in several modules. My live-usb always contains the latest tools/docs of my own, without going through the live system remastering process. I had about 7 layered modules that I build for slax and I just put them on top of grml. It works perfectly. Further, with stacked live system, you can, for the first time, load grml-small into ram (or grml-medium depending on your ram size), and leave the rest on USB/CD. Most importantly, it'll be much faster. Suppose your stacked live system is layered like the following: 1. All console tools 2. Xorg + lightweight window manager + essential X tools like gparted 3. Heavy weight desktop system (Gnome/Kde) 4. Occasionally used applications (KOffice/Latex) If you limit your self to only certain tasks (say console-only hacks), then you only need a limited number of modules to be loaded; all other modules are not loaded on start up. hence it will start faster, use less ram, and cause applications to run faster. Moreover your CD drive will only seek in a small area (instead of all across the whole CD). You don't even need to load it to ram if the loaded modules can be completed cached by the kernel. This significantly improves the speed. On the other hand, you can enjoy the full fledged desktop applications if you want to, from the very same CD. OK, enough "selling". Let's see how it can be achieved using aufs + grml tools. I'll use the scenario that grml-full is build on top of grml-medium, which is build on top of grml-small as the example. 1. Use aufs to create the stacked framework. The first command creates necessary directories, and the 2nd creates a stacked aufs file system, of which /grml/grml-layers/grml-work is the RW working branch. In this aufs file system, if a file is not available in grml-full, aufs looks in grml-medium, else in grml-small. mkdir -p /grml/grml-live/grml_chroot/ /grml/grml-layers/{grml-full,grml-medium,grml-small,grml-work} mount -t aufs -o br=/grml/grml-layers/grml-work=rw:/grml/grml-layers/grml-full:/grml/grml-layers/grml-medium:/grml/grml-layers/grml-small none /grml/grml-live/grml_chroot/ 2. Use grml-live to build the first layer. CLASSES='GRMLBASE,GRML_SMALL,RELEASE,AMD64' ARCH=amd64 grml-live -a $ARCH -c $CLASSES . . . 3. Now the first layer, grml-small, is available under /grml/grml-live/grml_chroot/, which is the mount point of the aufs file system. We need to move the content from RW layer to the lower /grml/grml-layers/grml-small layer. Note that the final umount and mount is recommended after the move, because the inode number may be changed. aubrsync move /grml/grml-live/grml_chroot /grml/grml-layers/grml-work /grml/grml-layers/grml-small umount /grml/grml-live/grml_chroot/ !mount 4. Install the next layer. This time grml-debootstrap is used instead, to install all grml-medium packages on top of the current chroot system. grml-debootstrap --verbose --arch amd64 --target /grml/grml-live/grml_chroot/ . . . 5. Hi, Can somebody explain the newly introduced bootid option? I know, bootid is used "for verifying the ISO through bootid=.... bootoption" and the logic behind bootoptions and possible combinations: * bootid.txt + wrong bootid=... => fails to boot * bootid.txt + right bootid=... => boots * bootid.txt + ignore_bootid => boots * bootid.txt + no bootid=... + no ignore_bootid => fails to boot * no bootid.txt + no bootid=... + no ignore_bootid => boots * no bootid.txt + bootid=... => fails to boot * no bootid.txt + ignore_bootid=... => boots I mean to ask, - what exactly does the bootid stand for? - how does the file /conf/bootid.txt generated? - how would bootid work with integrating multiple-grml on the same USB? Help with a new complex installation

Hi list, I was trying to install a stable release of Debian on a new server but I've found that the default kernel that comes with the official installer doesn't recognize the SATA controller that the motherboard has because it seems that is a board newer than the kernel. Then, I've booted the computer with a grml64 and it recognize well the controller and the two SATA disks attached to it. The two SATA disks are of the same type and size. I would like to use Raid1 for redundancy and LVM2 to manipulate the space and add of additional disks easily. I would also like to use XFS to test it since for what I read it's better than reiserfs and ext3 for journaling and performance. So, could you help me with this?. Reading about grub2, it can recognize RAID1, LVM and XFS partitions, but I don't know if it can do it if I use them all together for the "boot" directory. So, on the partition part, should I use a small (128Mb) RAID1+ext3 partition for the "boot" directory containing the initrd file and then the rest with RAID1+LVM+XFS?. How can I use grml to perform all this and have a stable Debian working on this server with this configuration?. Thanks for all. Ernesto

HD write protected and grml rescue mode

Hi, I get HD write protected warning when launching testdisk. As the aftermath, testdisk can't update the MBR: write_mbr_i386: starting... grub2 loopback feature

Hi! I'd like to use the loopback feature of grub2 to boot a grml iso-image that resides on a USB drive. Is there a way to make grub jump to the existing /boot/grub/grub.cfg in the ISO and show its contents as a submenu? When trying the same on the grub commandline, it reboots at "set root=(loop)". So root=loop doesn't seem to be supported... On the other hand, "configfile (loop)/boot/grub/grub.cfg" perfectly jumps to grmls boot menu. But when using this approach, I guess some support in grml's grub.cfg would be needed so that grub can correctly locate the image files. (Maybe a $loop variable prepended to all filenames in grmls grub.cfg, which is conditionally set to "(loop)"?) Any other hints? Hi, I've just submitted a feature request named grml2usb installation structure consideration at http://bts.grml.org/grml/issue874 I'm soliciting your comments are a normal user. Here is the repost of the content of the feature request. Currently, grml2usb install to the destination pen drive with the structure like this: . . . ./live/grml-medium/grml-medium.squashfs ./live/grml-medium/filesystem.module ./boot/release/grmlmedium/linux26 ./boot/release/grmlmedium/initrd.gz ./boot/syslinux/defaults.cfg ./boot/syslinux/grml.png ./boot/syslinux/hd.cfg ./boot/syslinux/isolinux.cfg ./boot/syslinux/grml_medium_default.cfg . . . I.e., every aspect of boot component has been seamlessly mingled into proper places. This is one way to arrange things, proper things go to their respective proper places (referred as plan-A afterward). However, I hope that the installation structure can take another approach -- all files go into a single directory, say /os/grml-medium-2010.04/ for example (referred as plan-B afterward). Here is my view of plan-B and plan-A: - directory structure. plan-B: self contained. plan-A: complicated, distro-specific related files spread arosss multiple directories. - organization: straightforward vs mixed-up. Use /boot/syslinux/ for example, plan-B contains only files originally from syslinux, nothing else, whereas plan-A contains files from all different flavours. - management: easy vs hard. Use deleting a flavour for example, plan-B just need to use a single command to remove (/os/grml-medium-2010.04/); plan-A: so complicated to do it manually that it is better to write another script to do it. - cooperate ability. relaxed vs strict. For example, when I want to try a new grml (beta) release, plan-B allows me to try it out parallel at /os/ grml-medium-newdate/ via for plan-A, the only way is to overwrite the version that I've been accustomed to and left with something risky. Hi, How to do bug report from grml-medium? I mean, I can't paste into link2, and I don't want to re-type everything character by character. Does anyone know some small-footprint browser that can let me paste into web forms? Right, it's not entirely correct. If you close multiple grml-chroot instances in the wrong order you will experience mountpoints from grml-chroot not cleand up. And get the appropriate error messages. Though your patch destroys _every_ other grml-chroot instance running in parallel because you just unmount filesystems which are in use. greets, michael
