grml0.9rc2: filterm does not work with less

Hi! When using a UTF-8 locale, grml0.9rc2 suggests during boot to use "filterm - dynafont" to enable UTF-8 output on the console. This works fine with several programs I tested (e.g. more, vim) but not with "less" (or "most"). This is annoying because it makes it impossible to view manpages since man uses less as its pager by default. When trying to view manpages in a UTF-8 locale without filterm, special characters such as "fancy" quotes are not displayed correctly, of course. The effect when using less with "filterm - dynafont" is that the console is switched back to its default grml font and less hangs. It has to be killed to be able to proceed. A simple test to show this behavior while LANG=en_US.UTF-8 is set: % filterm - dynafont % less ...Only ^C can stop less Instead of calling less directly, try to view any manpage: % filterm - dynafont % man find Reformatting find(1), please wait... ...stuck... I am sure this is a problem of filterm but since filterm seems to be the recommended way to do UTF-8 output in grml0.9, it is also grml's problem. Regards Martin Jerabek

FYI - since grml tracks Debian very closely: UTF-8 encoding default for new systems The installer will set up systems to use UTF-8 encoding rather than the old language-specific encodings (like ISO-8859-1, EUC-JP or KIO-8). http://www.debian.org/releases/etch/i386/release-notes/ch-whats-new.en.html (I know, mika & gang are working on it post-0.9, thanks, this is for everyone else) (p.s. Ubuntu already defaults to UTF-8)

No pub keys for new grml repo?

Hi, just changed sources to new repo, then updating package list from new repo -> aptitude / gpg warns that there's no public key for repo/package signatures :/ Anybody else with this issue? Robert btw: THX a lot to mika and rest grml team for this great work!

[OT] udev and number of devices

Hi, Not a grml specific question, but trying to tap into the knowledge from people here: Can udev handle more than 15 devices? My HD used to have 15 partitions, now I created another one, the 16th, but it is not recognized by udev. I.e., there is no /dev/sda16. If I created it myself, like the following, $ ls -l /dev/sda1* brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 1 12-03 12:31 /dev/sda1 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 10 12-03 17:31 /dev/sda10 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 11 12-03 17:31 /dev/sda11 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 12 12-03 12:31 /dev/sda12 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 13 12-03 17:31 /dev/sda13 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 14 12-03 17:31 /dev/sda14 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 15 12-03 17:31 /dev/sda15 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 16 12-03 18:08 /dev/sda16 I still can't use it to mount the partition: % mount /dev/sda16 /mnt/tmp1/ mount: /dev/sda16 is not a valid block device Anything I've been missing? thanks -- Tong (remove underscore(s) to reply) http://xpt.sourceforge.net/

grml-tips sarge success

Hallo I have done two different trials today: a) first I followed grml-tips sarge, but instead of doing base-config as written down on the CDROM, I switched to use the etch sequence. I have come as far as installing a kernel, but this fails on the creation of the mkinitrd. The /dev/sda3 which is needed is not accepted as a block device. b) The trial with grml-debootstrap runs very smooth after eliminating all input errors it installed a sarge first with a kernel of sarge, which does not boot, then I changed sources list and it installed 2.6.18-grml in chroot. Now lsmod shows only a module for ipv6 . nothing else. Fine tuning is now required: fstab, modules (installation in chroot needed) and usb devices. Hallo I noted now differences between grml-tips sarge and etch base-config does not show up in the install of etch. from mount ... /proc the proceeding is different and answers some questions about errors occuring in my installs. grml-tips sarge

Hallo I am very confused again : I have followed the grml-tips sarge to a 100 %, but at the step base-config I type in at "configure apt sources" ftp.de.debian.org and then a download of testing "packages.gz" follows. But it should only download stable "packages.gz". also that I put my preferences and apt.conf in the /etc/apt/ stating that only stable or sarge is preference. I eliminated the testing and unstable sources from sources.list and preferences. when I key in /debian stable it asks for stable/testing which of course does not exist. Something in the base-config secretly adds "testing" to every user input. How come ???? The system is very stiff in first downloading libc6 from testing and then the whole sarge setup is fUcKeD uP.(the only right word. ) ( that breaks about 100 packages from the bases and consequently the system is unable to downgrade again. ) I have done that now about 6 times and the result does not change. best regards. -- Erich Minderlein <erminderlein(a)locoware.de> MARC Mannheim Rail Commerce GmbH
