First Release Candidate of Grml version 2018.12 available

Hi, just in time we have a present for you! The first release candidate of the upcoming Grml version 2018.12, code-named 'Gnackwatschn' is available. This Grml release provides fresh software packages from Debian testing (AKA buster). As usual it also incorporates current hardware support and fixes known bugs from the previous Grml release. For detailed information about the changes between 2017.05 and 2018.12 have a look at the official release announcement: https://grml.org/changelogs/README-grml-2018.12-rc1/ You can download Grml 2018.12-rc1 from: https://grml.org/download/prerelease/ Please test the ISOs and everything you usually use and rely on, and report back so we can complete the stable release soon. If no major problems come up, the next iteration will be the stable release, which is scheduled for the end of December (2018 *cough* :)). Persistence

Using grml64small and following http://wiki.grml.org/doku.php?id=persistency from step by step I get the following error in the boot.log Begin: Copying live media to ram ... boot problems on dell r640

hi, i recently got access to an Dell R640 Server and i'm having some issues booting via the virtual cdrom feature on the remote access card that i cannot pinpoint sofar, so maybe somebody can help me to debug this: * with 2017.05, it boots fine, however i have some hardware not recognized (namely the 10Gb network interfaces) * i tried the testing and sid based daily images (in the later case also some older versions from 2018-04-30 and 2018-04-23), but there i cannot boot and i'm getting the following error message that i cannot really pinpoint: -- Reloc 0 block size 2756420659 is invalid Relocation failed: Unsupported Failed to load image: Unsupported start_image() returned Unsupported -- (there might be some slight typos in there, i typed it from the screen) after that, i restarts and the boot menu never comes up. thx regards, albert

GRML customization issues

Hi all, GRML works fine on a small Intel D525 CPU box with NVidia GT-218 graphics, much more stable than the nouveaufb driver in some Ubuntu versions. I'm using an older GRML 2013.02 release, just don't feel like backing up all data and to re-run grml-to-harddisk again. Some questions on system customization: 1.) The pre-configured zsh shell immediately shares entered commands and it's history among all open instances. I use to reserve dedicated terminals to particular commands. For example, man pages are always opened on tty5. Instead of retrieving the last or last but one "man" command from the history, zsh shows all commands from other ttys first. No real feature. How to configure a more bashish behaviour? BTW, is there any relationship between this zsh (developed since 1992 by Paul Falstad and others) and the zsh shell in NextStep? 2.) How to disable the awesome Debian automounter for removable media? It keeps from mounting USB sticks or optical media to individual mount points, but requires to manually unmount automatic /media/xxx mount points first ... 3.) Which is the most elegant, i.e. recommended way to start the X server upon GRML boot? As "init 3" doesn't work, I currently need to manually execute "/usr/bin/startx /usr/bin/startlxde &" from a tty. Where to place this string, into which startup script? 4.) Both Fluxbox and LXDE start with english keyboard layout by default. I gladly discovered the "setxkbmap -layout <lang>" command. Can anyone tell me whether this setting is saved persistently, i.e. still active after reboot? (Won't restart for testing, GRML box 32 days uptime now.) Regards Torsten

Hi, I am trying to build a customized grml live CD. I used kvm to boot grml32-small_2017.05.iso and mounted a data partition at /media/sda in the VM. On that partition there is also a copy of the iso. Then I created /etc/grml/grml-live.local according to grml-live.conf and created /etc/grml/fai/config/package_config/GREG listing additional packages to install. To make things smoother, I chose SUITE="stretch". Finally I did: time grml-live -V -u -e /media/sda/grml32-small_2017.05.iso Please see the attached etc.tgz and typescript.gz . The strange thing is: the additional packages are NOT installed. In the typescript file you can find: <quote> Maximum number of packages installed at a time set to 3000 install_packages: reading config files from directory //etc/grml/fai/config/package_config install_packages: read config file GRMLBASE install_packages: read config file GRML_SMALL install_packages: read config file GREG install_packages: executing chroot /media/sda/grml_chroot apt-get clean WARNING: These unknown packages are removed from the installation list: apt-transport-https busybox bzip2 console-data dbus deborphan dmidecode eject file gpm grml2usb grml-autoconfig ... </quote> So /usr/sbin/install_packages did apt-get clean right before installing packages and therefore was unable to add any extra packages? grml: speakup/espeak doesn't work because espeak/espeak-ng can't talk

Hi all, Can someone have a look at espeak/espeak-ng? There seems to be a problem with the sound system or espeak/espeak-ng. Would be cool if someone could fix it. I guess if espeak could talk again then speakup should talk again as well.
