Dear Friends at grml, The really good news is that now my dell latitude d830 boots and runs from the live cd, no problems. Now, like many dell, hp products, the lovely, incomparable, almost Kaerntnerisch' bcm 4300 series chips still really need ndiswrapper, which means the last three lines of a blacklist are ssb, b43, b44. Now, for the terminally stupid amongst us, to wit me, is there an init script which we could call, either on the live cd or once installed, to make it possible for the really large numbers of bcm prisoners to run ndiswrapper without a lot of trouble. The reason I ask is that in using the live disk to work on these kinds of laptops for administrative purposes(in other words, non IT workers screw something up ;) ) only one "blacklist=blahblah" seems to work at boot of the live cd. This means that the very first commands, after happy hacking must be rmmod blah blah, which is find, unless a yazdzik forgets so to do. Thus, we need a grml script to use ndiswrapper which rmmods the offenders, grml-screwbcm or something that, useable at startup. Or not, as the case may be. Hi, I'm wondering if the default grml kernel is capable for pxeboot and nfsroot. There is only one thread in grml mlist mentioning pxeboot http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.distributions.grml.user/820 but I'm not sure what the conclusion is. Specifically, is the grml kernel built with the following features enabled as modules? # DHCP support CONFIG_IP_PNP=y CONFIG_IP_PNP_DHCP=y # NFS client support CONFIG_NFS_FS=y CONFIG_NFS_V3=y CONFIG_NFS_V4=y CONFIG_NFS_DIRECTIO=y # NFS root support CONFIG_ROOT_NFS=y Also CONFIG_AUFS_EXPORT should be enabled too, for me to export aufs as nfsroot from the server. dpkg-dev conflicts with devscripts (< 2.10.26)

Hi! Just encountered a problem while trying to upgrade some packages. Hello, i have to try compile some programs under grml 1.1. After running make, i become some error messages memset was not declared in this scope. any ideas wht to do? google shows a bug in the gcc, but nothing what to do, to fix that. Regards. Dietmar

Ok, I tried to start the latest devel iso of grml with swspeak, and it wouldn't start. I also tried to do the same with today's latest daily build. What I am wondering is this: When will this issue be fixed so that I will have back my grml swspeak followed by swspeak at the completion of the bootup process? Is there some other command I could give and get something other than: fatal error setting up software speakup and then: sorry, software synthesizer not available. Did you boot with swspeak boot option? Please fix this as soon as possible, and let me know when I can return to using grml like I did on my 32-bit machine. Thanks most sincerely: Doug Smith

VM issues

Hi all, I've recently tried to install grml with parallels (on a macintel), and my attempt was unsuccessful, it might be a problem with parallels, but I was wondering wether anyone reported issues with that configuration? PS : I have installed a fedora on my external HD since then, but I don't like it as much. And grml saved my professional life once, thank you for your nice distro. BTW, I will provide more info if necessary.

Thank you so much, Frank and Richard, for your attention, and sorry for taking your time. Your considerations about my post are correct. Realising my mess, I tried to track back how I came to grml site thinking it was incognito site, but with no success. I'll stay curious about for a good time, though. Well it was indeed about the incognito live-cd you have pointed out and it simply happened to not boot completely in my machine. As to an hour ago I realise it was for some hardware problem, as the same cd did mounted the gui (kde) finely on my brothers computer (although the browser couldn't find any webpage, even the network having internet connection ok). That seems to be a lone guy work (still in beta condition), but promissing as a very useful tool for those a "little bit" paranoid on computer/internet security. The cd even erases the ram at shutdown to avoid eventual cold boot attack... :-)) So finally I came to this list just for us to have a nice meeting. It was great to see your concern on my problem and I will not forget. Thank you for your directions and maybe will meet again. Open source is showing to me now its richness. No GUI

Greetings! Sorry if I'm a totally ignorant newby at linux, which I'm getting in exactly because of Incognito, a longing and startling tool. Being clueless about, I thought I was to expect that booting Incognito live-cd would get me directly to the GUI (KDE) which is shown in the screenshots. But the boot stops at a linux prompt, both trying grml 1.1 and grml medium, being the first "livecd root #" and the latter "root@grm ~#". So I would like to ask whether this is actualy expected or is a bug, and what I must do to run kde (or the gui) in order to star using Incognito. Thank you very much, renlac

Sending in bug reports and patches

Hello, I sent in a bug report along with a small patch for grml2usb at bugs(a)grml.org a few weeks ago. I was just wondering if it got lost in transit. I didn't receive any kind of acknowledgement and didn't see the bug appear on the BTS. The bug was still in grml2usb last time I checked (sometime last week). An Intro-and-Other Items?

I must have sent to another address for this list, as my message bounced. First, I asked on the speakup list-and-it was suggested I join this list for discussion-and-solutions. First of all, for any who are not on blind-l, blinux, or speakup, a bit of an intro. I got my first PC-and-started on CompuServe in 1994, tried Jaws in late 97, but finally left windows completely here at home in 2006. I have had shell accounts since 1995, but the transition from understanding DOS to understanding unix/linux commands, are a chalenge. Now, we installed GRML on my Laptop, the full nearly 700MB version. We successfully have IBM TT Synth working. Speakup is more or less talking. So here are my issues: #1 When speakup is reading, it is spelling most words, however in screen-review it is fine. #2 The cursor seems to be highlighting a random line, such as 19, instead of the most current text. #3 Where are any power management settings? After an hour or so, I am automaticly logged out of any consoles. #4 Once I rebooted the laptop, now speakup volume is much loer-and-the insert 2 will not alter anything. #5 Can I run Y A S R with TT Synth? Seems like anytime I go in the YASR options pannel, I can never save settings, as speech drops dead. #6 And in the setup screen for e-mail settings to join this list, it mentions you can set filters in receiving messages. When will the speech issue with the 64-bit version be fixed?

Hi, all. I am writing to ask when the speech issue with the 64-bit version will be fixed. The "speech issue" is this: boot the grml64 disk and enter: grml swspeak The boot process continues in what sounds like a normal manner until: fatal error setting up software speakup I was just writing to let you all know that this is happening and, when I went looking for information to diagnose the problem, there was none. I do not mind working on the fix if you will just tell me what I need to work on. If I can be of any help in fixing this, I will gladly help. Sincerely: Doug Smith

switching to german language

Hello, i need your help. I want to switch to german messages, but i become only english meassages. I have change the keyboard and language with the grml-setlang script and the boot option lang=de. I have the german keyboard layout for use, but no german messages. In the locale.nopurge file i have added the lines "de_DE*" and "de" and done some aptitude safe-upgrade. Thanks for some tips. VMware and 2.6.26-grml kernel

Hi, Has anyone get any version of VMware working under the 2.6.26-grml kernel? I am trying to install the latest VMware.Workstation.v6.5.0.118166, but get a compilation error -- see http://bts.grml.org/grml/issue553 . According to http://www.archlinux.it/wiki/index.php?title=Installing_VMware "With 2.6.26 and VMWare 6.5 _no_ any-any patch is needed anymore (6.5.0 build-118166). The graphical installer works just fine and all the modules work out of the box" but I'm having difficulties. How to use the .iso image for usb booting

Hi, How can I put the .iso image on usb so that the usb boots with the latest devel release, grml-medium-devel_2008.09.28.iso for example? This might be more appropriately directed to msmtp-users, but as there's the following in the ~/.msmtprc that came with grml, I thought I'd check here first. # use ssh-tunnel # ============== # set up tunnel via ssh: # ssh -l mika -L 9999:your.rootserver.tld:25 user(a)sshserver.tld -N -f # # host localhost # port 9999 Wanting to tunnel msmtp through ssh, I tried this in my ~/.msmtprc: from username1(a)mydomain.net ssh -l john -L 9999:mydomain.net:25 username1(a)mydomain.net -N -f host localhost port 9999 And in ~/.muttrc : set sendmail="/usr/bin/msmtp" But got the following error when attempting to send a message: msmtp: /home/john/.msmtprc: line 25: unknown command ssh Probably I'm overlooking something(s) obvious regarding the use of ssh and msmtp... Should that ssh command be invoked independently of msmtp somehow, maybe in a wrapper script? Should I be looking at the set_sendmail.sh script? Any pointers much appreciated. Hi, I found my aufs mount behaves not as expected. According to the example from manpage, aufs mount behaves like this: # mount -v -t aufs br:/day0:/base none /u none on /u type aufs (rw,xino=/day0/.aufs.xino,br:/day0=rw:/ base=ro) # mount -v -o remount,\ prepend:/day1,\ xino=/day1/xino,\ mod:/day0=ro,\ del:/day0 \ /u none on /u type aufs (rw,xino=/day1/xino,br:/day1=rw:/base=ro) But mine like this: $ mount -v -t aufs -o br:/day0:/base none /u none on /u type aufs (rw,br:/day0:/base) $ mount -v -o remount,prepend:/day1,mod:/day0=ro,del:/day0 /u none on /u type aufs (rw,br:/day0:/base,prepend:/day1,mod:/day0=ro,del:/ day0) See, /day0 show up 3 times in mtab. But according to the manpage, it should be removed from aufs mount table. Anybody knows why (and fix)? PS. problems with speech, both 64 and 32 bit versions.

Ok, I hate to do this, but here goes. The other night, I downloaded both the new latest devel releases and burned them, hoping to switch this machine over to text-based. Here's what happened with the speech in both versions. First of all, this machine's a 64-bit one, so I tried the 64-bit version of the latest devel release. boot the computer with the disk in it. I kept them separate so that I would know that the one I was starting out with was the 64-bit version. grml swspeak when the disk stops spinning for the first time. The boot procesSmith, you might just have it. Well, I did get it, but what I got was not what I wanted. This was the flite Kal voice coming on with the simple, but rather non-informative message: Fatal Error Setting Up Software Speakup. Well, blast it. I might not get to switch my system over that night. I would have enjoyed that couple of hours when it comes to configuring my system, but not this time. Well, after a little longer, the flite program spoke again. Finished Booting. What is the setup that allows the flite program to speak even if the speakup fails? Well, since it spoke again, I thought I would try it anyway and see what I get. swspeak Sorry, software synthesizer not available, did you boot with swspeak bootoption? Well, of course, I did, but the system is unaware of it. Funny, but I'll try it out. espeak That gets part of the trick done, but not all. Espeak simply echoes all of my commands, so no results from them, except to know that something did, indeed, go horribly wrong. Well, I don't believe this. kill the espeak process to keep it from blocking my terminal. Now, I know that there are actually two software synthesizers, if not more, available, so don't give me that meaningless message. dmesg | espeak This was the only way I could think of to attempt to determine what was going wrong. All I heard was information about configuring and activating every component from the microprocessors to the disk drive and the usb ports, but nothing about an abnormality with speakup. Well, now, 32-bit version on a 64-bit machine, but I'm not going to my lady friend's room and disturb her to borrow her machine, and, besides, this would change another variable in my experiment and I just wanted to know what was happening here. boot the computer with the disk in it. I use the other one this time. grml swspeak Well, the first boot attempt falls flat on its face as the message about ossaudio failing to open an output device. Why is speakup or something still trying to use oss? ALSA, I thought, had become the standard a few years ago. The second boot came up talking. Great!!! However, I'm not going to run 32-bit stuff on here even though I know it will work, at least in part. Now, we've got speech, and it's working reasonably well. Now, fire up elinks and head for a few favorite web sites. It works reasonably well, and I am beginning to ponder the possibilities of using this stuff till the 64-bit one works. Then it happens. Instead of going to another web site, we crash land and explode into flames in glitchville. Speech crashes, and nothing but a reboot will remedy the problem. It worked for a couple of minutes, and I am not sure what kinds of diagnostics might determine the nature of the problem. Anyway, I'm on this thing without speech, and that can be potentially dangerous, especially for the already-installed file system, which I'm using right now to write this. Well, this is the best I can do at present for a but report, since it is the programming I definitely need that caused the problem. I hope this helps in some way and this can be fixed in the 64 and 32 bit versions in the next devel releases or in the rc versions. Hope this helps. Doug Smith

When will the next release be out, and will the 64-bit version include speech?

Hi, I have been waiting for the new release. I mentioned the spelling problem in the earlier version, and I know that that has all been fixed. However, I have bought a new 64-bit machine since that time, and have had to go to a graphical distribution. It works ok, but I really miss all of my command line favorites. I wish to know when the next release of grml will be availalble. I would also like to know if the new 64-bit version will work with software speech. I tried the current amd64 version, but got neither speech nor sound when running the following: at boot: grml swspeak The system seems to boot ok, but, when it stops, I run swspeak I hear the disk spin, but there is no speech nor is there any sound. It seems to have something to do with the audio on this machine, because the listings of all the controls in aumix indicate that most of the volume settings such as mic, pcm, phin, phout, and more are missing. The only thing I can really tell you about this machine, since I do not know hardware all that well is that it is a Compaq Presario f-700 laptop with a dual-core 64-bit amd processor. The video, which I do not nor cannot use is nvidia or something like that. I do know what kind of sound hardware is on here. Is there anything I am doing wrong. Please help me return from the graphical nightmare world. Thanks. Doug Smith

Hi, Several misc questions regarding grml-debootstrap... - Does debootstrap download packages? If yes, where does it place downloaded packages? - Since grml-debootstrap also install packages defined in /etc/debootstrap/packages into the chroot system, is it a good idea to bind mount /var/cache/apt/archives into the chroot system as well, so as to save the downloading and cleaning up? - furthermore, I think over 99% people would have same apt/sources.list and apt/preferences in host and chroot system. Change Speech language according to the lang cheat-code

Hello all I don't know if there is time enough to add this feature for the next GRML stable release. Anyways, here is my request: Whenever one chooses a language at the boot prompt by issueing the lang cheat-code, and then issue swspeak too, it would be nice if the ESpeak synthesiser came speaking in that specified language. In my case it would be Brazilian Portuguese (pt_BR). I don't have technical skills enough to submit a patch, but I'm almost sure it can be done editing both "/etc/speech-dispatcher/speechd.conf" and "/etc/speech-dispatcher/modules/espeak.conf" files. Hi I would like to say: aptitude install dhcpcd but aptitude wants to remove pump which in turn want to remove : grml grml-autoconfig grml-debugtools grml-etc grml-x grml2hd This seems like a lot of change. Is it possible to use dhcpcd without making grml unstable ? Also, I was wondering, according to various threads I read, if dhcpcd is not superior to pump, so why has it not been selected for the distribution ? Thank a lot Peter

[grml2usb] Minimize the number of files in the root directory on the usb drive

Hello! When I copy grml to a usb pen drive with grml2usb, it puts 30 files and directories into the root directory of that drive. Since I also want to use that drive for other stuff (like portable apps, multimedia files etc.) it's not nice to see my drive cluttered with dozens of files when I access it in some file manager. I've seen some live systems (I guess it was http://sidux.com/) which only need very few files to boot and put almost all of them into some subdirectory so that my directory structure stays pretty clean. It would be nice if grml could achive something similar, or are there any good reasons against this? Sebastian

Hi folks, has anyone a good and easy solution to get Evolution to work on GRML 1.1? currently when you try to start, you get the error evolution: error while loading shared libraries: libnssutil3.so.1d: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I tried then nearly every combination I could think of (loading the stuff from testing, unstable, experimental etc. etc.) but nevertheless always got the same result: No evolution :-( any help appreciated regards peb

Hi! I have several i386 and amd64 debian servers. So I have to use grml-medium and grml64-medium CDs. It would be great, if I can have just one CD/DVD with both versions on it. How can I achieve this? Is grml-live able to produce such an multiarch CD? Or if I could change /live to /live64 for grml64, I could use syslinux to select the version to boot... thanks for your help Thorsten

CF card not detected in PCMCIA adapter

I have a CF card plugged into a SanDisk CompactFlash PC Card Adapter inserted into the PCMCIA slot of an X40 ThinkPad running grml 1.1 (installed to hard disk). The CF card shows up fine when used in conjunction with a USB cardreader or an ide-CF adapter. A combined 32/64 grml CD would be nice, like http://www.finnix.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/finnix_dev_boot_menu1… This distro is equivalent to grml-small or grml-medium. I use it for PowerPC admin (32 and 64). Grml CD has previously included two versions of Python, for example. Size-wise, two kernels is not a big deal.

Wireless Configuration Problem

I recently switched from wired to wireless networking on my 2.6.23-grml hard disk system. I configured wireless while the wired networking card was still in my laptop and connected. I'm sure I had wireless working because I set the cable modem on my ethernet port offline. Now I've removed my wired networking equipment and GRML doesn't configure wireless networking. After a "modprobe bcm43xx" and "ifup eth1" the syslog records: Microcode bcm43xx_microcode4.fw not available or load failed That file is still in /lib/firmware, and its date predates the removal of my wired networking hardware. "grml-network" doesn't see eth1, but "iwconfig" does. I'm guessing that GRML loaded additional code at boot when it found a wired ethernet connection. -- -- Tom White

grml on Asus eee-pc 700 -- Alsa problem

Hello listmembers, I bought an eee-pc 700 and installed grml, since although I'm by no means a system admnistrator it provides me with exactly the software I need in everyday life! The installation went fine and I set up a nice lightweight system using wmii as a windowmanage -- grml sems to be the ideal solution for a rather slow mini computer! One problem remains: I can't get the sound started. While there seems to be no problem configuring Alsa with alsaconfig, alsamixer gives me: alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: Invalid argument and amixer says: amixer: Mixer default load error: Invalid argument Now, I've googled the problem and read that this can happen due to incompatible versions of the kernel and alsa. But that's impossible in this case, since on other computers, grml works out of the box . The sound card is: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) Does anyone in the list have a clue? And is there anybody else using rml on an eee-pc? A scheme to manage several ZSH config file collections?

Hi all, some of you might be aware of grml, a live boot CD which uses ZSH as its default shell. I suggested integrating several different zshrc files along with whatever other files they need and offer the user a selection of said configuration files. Now, we are wondering if there is a clean and maintainable way to do this. I have had a few ideas in this direction and would like to discuss those here. New suggestions are more than welcome as well, of course. Ideally, the same versions should be usable on the machines of whoever maintains those files, so that changes can be merged back and forth easily, which will allow more people to participate. 1) Make ZSH load the RC files from different paths (/etc/zsh/config1 ..) Pro: Almost drop-in, minimal work necessary Cleanly seperated Different ttys might run with different RC files Con: Needs modification to fpath etc Shells can not be allowed to start prior to rc file selection 2) Use symlinks Pro: Fast to set up Con: All shells are forced to use the same RC files Shells can not be allowed to start prior to rc file selection Ugly & hackish 3) Use $ZSHRC_PREFIX or some similar variable Pro: Drop-in solution once you change your RC files for the first time Cleanly seperated Different ttys might run with different RC files Con: Shells can not be allowed to start prior to rc file selection Needs a way for ZSH to be started with a variable set before it is invoked Are there any other options? Pros or Cons I overlooked? Anything else? The main thing I worry about is to make the shells wait for their RC files in a robust & fail-safe way? knoppix-like bootfrom in gmrl?

Hi, ~ I was looking for a Unicode/utf-8 based LiveCD and apparently gmrl looks like it ~ The thing is that knoppix does not offer Unicode support and I was getting weird results while coding for Unicode data ~ I use knoppix a lot and got used to most of its ways to do things ~ So, where is the old good bootfrom=/dev/<your device>/knoppix.iso ;-) ~ Based on my personal expirience CDs and CD-ROM drives are heavily taxed by LiveCDs and start failing with cloop I/O errors pretty quickly, that is why I always go for the bootfrom cheatcode, keep a small partition just for the ISO and use lots of RAM ~ Thanks lbrtchx

Hi, Do I need to backup the /dev directory when backing up my root fs? FYI, I thought udev would populate it on boot up so I didn't backup the /dev directory. However, I got Warning: unable to open initial console and the boot froze. Hello, I have a multi-boot system containing fedora 9, and enterprise linux 5. I want ot add grml to this system so that I can customize it. The current system has a boot partition /dev/sda1, and both the fedora and enterprise linux systems use grub. How can I tell grml2hd to install grml into a partition on this system and use the /boot partition for its boot partition, and to add grml to the grub menu.lst file?

Hello, I have been a unix/linux user for roughly 15 years, but have just recently learned about the concepts and power behind grml (yesterday). I am blind, and an very pleased with the integration of speakup and brltty into the grml live cd. My first "job" with grml is to try to diagnose/recover a windows laptop. It had problems right from the beginning when we opened the box from the manufacturer, but my daughter was able to keep it going for 2.5 yerars. This spring it simply stopped booting even after a full re-install of windows. Any tips on system diagnostics that I could run would be appreciated.

Setting up grub into lvm and a suggestion

Hello I suggest, if possible, that grml2hd detects automatically other OSes on the hard disk and sets up lilo/grub accordingly during the installation. Here I have Windows XP on the first partition - /dev/sda1 - but I don't know how to deal with lilo. I was thinking that grml2hd would prompt me for choosing grub instead of lilo, but it didn not, perhaps because I've installed grml onto a logical partition ? I know how to setup grub for dual-booting and for booting Linux into a primary partition. I guess that setting it up on a logical partition is somewhat different, since I have typed "root(hd0,5)" at the grub console in order to setup the root device to /dev/sda6, and grub has returned "unknown filesystem type". Hi, Some experiences with grml 1.1 on a Dell Inspiron 530(nvidia chipset and graphics system) and a generic issue: when running grml-x with a module option, but without windowmanager, it complains that the windowmanager with the name of the module doesn't exist. I'd expect it just says "you didn't specify a windowmanager", but instead it seems to try to take the last argument as windowmanager name. As of the hardware support for inspiron: grml-x doesn't get an x system loaded - until I start it one time with the -fallback option. _after_ this one start with fallback, I can start it again, without fallback - and then I get a better resolution and can work without the screen-scrolling that happens in fallback mode. Hi Michael and all As I said earlier, I'm trying to change the ESpeak voice language to Brazilian Portuguese in grml. I made some changes to /etc/speech-dispatcher/speechd.conf, then restarted speechd-up successfully using the nice command, but the language remains English. I uncommented the line 78 in speechd.conf, and changed "en" to pt. It looks like this: DefaultLanguage "pt" Then I did the same for line 156 that now looks like this: LanguageDefaultModule "pt" "espeak" Does anyone knows what I am missing? Install on LVM: some questions

Hi all I have one only HD, and was thinking of using LVM to install GRML to one or more logical partitions. But I've read that such setup is more likely to have problems regarding boot and files corrumtion. If someone has installed the entire system onto logical partitions, could please tell whether or not it's really more dangerous? Is it worth to give it a try? Also, I wouldn't like to lose any performance. Is there any slow down in any way? Adding a program to grml-medium on USB-stick

Hello, following your excellent instruction I installed grml-medium on a USB-stick thus eliminating the need to insert the grml CD whenever I want to do some minor data manipulations. For backing up partitions I use partimage, but unfortunately this program is not included in grml-medium. I have to "apt-get update" and "apt-get install partimage" each time I want to use it. Is there a way to permanently install this program (or any other) on the USB-stick? Hubert

Speakup softsynth not talking with grml 1.1 installation

Hi listers, I recently installed grml 1.1 on my hard disk and can't seem to get it talking through my softsynth device. I went through all the configuration files of speech-dispatcher and espeak but couldn't find the cause. However if I use the cdrom speakup talks through my hardware apollo synth as well as through software synth. I would like to have it talk through software synth. Any ideas as to what I might do? I'd like to add that I'm blind and therefore can't read the messages coming up when the system started and I enter swspeak! I also entered swspeak as a start parameter on the cdrom and on the hard disk installation. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Ernst

"dpkg --purge etckeeper" was the goal to solve the Problem! Ok but what can I do if I still would like to use etckeeper. As far as I know I can save different States from etc files to downgrading to the old Version when i get an error in a configuration. how to upgrade

Hello, i have installed the latest version of grml to harddisk. If i do the following commands the upgrade of packages will stop with an error of dpkg, if the gkrellmd package will be upgraded. apt-get update apt-get upgrade I have also tested apt-get upgrade -f or apt-get dist-upgrade I have also done apt-get remove gkrellmd* But i become allways the same error. I want to use gnome-orca with gnome-desktop and so i have installed apt-get install gnome-orca apt-get install gnome-desktop. but the command orca -t produces a lot of errors, and so i think it is the best to bring all the installed packages to the newest version. recovery from mkfs error?

I've heard grml comes with forensic tools, and so was wondering if there's anything in the toolkit that might help me recover from an unpleasant mistake. Trying to reformat a usb thumbdrive, I overlooked the fact that /dev/sda was my 160GB external hard drive (ext3), and that the thumbdrive was actually /dev/sdb. I issued this command: mkfs -t vfat -I /dev/sda The most important stuff was backed up, but there is some pain involved. Any suggestions (yes, I know... PAY ATTENTION!!) or pointers much appreciated. I'm installing grml 1.1 on an HP tc1100 tablet. The Hard drive has been replaced with a 12GB CF card (SanDisk Extreme III). I stepped through the grml2hd process selecting all the defaults. Hello Micka thanks for your help. I have added the modules snd-sb16 and parport-pc in the correct order into /etc/modules and that works. I have spend a lot of time to become dsl to work. pppoeconf has created a file dsl-provider in /ettc/ppp/peers/ and pon dsl-provider start the connection. If i run lynx like: lynx http://www.wdr.de nothing will happen. If i add a line : nameserver 129.13.64.5 to the two existing lines of nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf the above lynx-command works. How can i add a extra dns-server to resolve.conf or must i change something into the dsl-provider file? I want to add the aqmoney-0.6.x paket and openhbci, and the aqmoney- interface, so i have done. apt-cache search banking to look how the correct name of the paket is, but there is only the aqbanking package. Can i download the package from an other server and install aqmoney? Another question to start the grml from usb-stick modified for the eeePC, is: grml starts from usb-stick, if have added a line options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig in the alsa-base and have created a modified initrd-file. also i have created a second partition of 300MB (ext2) on that usb-stick. The label of the second partition is GRMLCONFIG. grml boot from usb-stick and the df command shows, that the stick is /dev/sdb1. So i added the myconfig=/dev/sdb2 to the syslinux.cfg, but grml does not mount the the /dev/sdb2 partition and restore my config.tbz from there. What can i do or must i use an other bootparameter? netboot for grml-small

Hi everybody, is there any documentation how to generate a netboot package for grml-small? I'm already able to boot the grml-small kernel via PXE but I don't know how to generate an apropriate initrd. And in my case I'd also like to modify the init script inside the initrd, as I did with the older version, to fetch the squashfs image using http to a ramdisk because I don't want to setup an NFS server for that network. I already got that running with the old grml-small release but I used the normal grml netboot package and hacked in the kernel modules and stuff manually which was too ugly to do it again ;-) thanks, Markus

Hello, to have sound on my pc i must start the sound-module before the paport- modules (parport, parport-pc). In the alsa-base i have added the line options snd-sb16 isapnp=0 irq=7 dma8=1 dma16=5 port=0x2000 If i remove parport-pc, parport and start the sound via modprobe snd-sb16, the sound works. what can i do, that the sound will be loaded before the parport-modules? Also the tulip driver will be loaded automaticly and the dmfe module after the tulip-module. For my onboard networkcard i only use dmfe. I have added a line in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist: blacklist tulip But the tulip-moudle will be loaded. What can i do, that the tulip-module will not be loaded? I have connected a dsl-modem to my ethernetcard. On slackware i start the dsl-connection with adsl-start. I have run pppoeconf, but pppoeconf did not create the /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf file. I also have started netcardconf, but without success. what are the steps to become a connection over the dsl-modem to the internet Thanks for your help. Dietmar

Dear M and friends, A bit more on the Dell Latitude D930 grml install grml 1.1 just drops to "can't access tty job control off" mint linux, which works perfectly except for the sound issue, well-known, lists the dvd driver as the first scsi drive and the hdd as the second, contrary to all other laptops I have used grml 1.0 shows more, as when seeking the cdrom after intial sequence, it keeps tyring to find hdc, so this leads me to believe there is a sata/pata issue not in either kernel, but somewhere in the installer. this is very new equipment, santa rosa chip, so I have little hope, but if mint works, why should not grml ? Is the ICHM 8 sata controller no supported for some reason? Best, M Duse

Hi, I just download the grml 1.1 iso and install it on my pen drive with your special script! all is ok. I can boot on my computer. But I'm french and the qwertz or qwerty keyboards are a little bit hard for us. How can I set my keyboard to fr. the lang and other language settings is it's possible...Can I boot with special language parameters in order to have directly a system with azerty keyboard ? Thanks! booting from sdhc-card

Hello, i have installed the grml 1.1 with the help of the grml2hd -i script on a 4 GB schc-card. If have deleted the fat32 partition on the sdhc-card with fdisk and created a linux partition, set the boot flag. After that i run the grml2hd script. But the the eeepc did not boot from this card. If have pressed the eSC-key and changed to the card-reader line, but nothing happens. In the menu.lst the default is set to (hd1,0). In the device.map are the (fd0), (hd0), (hd1) and (hd2) defined. I am not familiar with grub and will be happy, for becoming some tips. Regards Dietmar

Hello, thanks for your tips. If i a remove the snd-hda-intel module and load it as follows modprobe snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig the sound on the eeepc works, and if i do echo sftsyn >/proc/speakup/synth_name and swspeak the softwarespeak will work. Regards. Dietmar

Hi, Habe endlich grml-live getestet. Erstmal nur in der default config. Dabei fallen mir folgende Dinge auf. (hoffentlich ist Deutsch auf der Liste erlaubt, ich hatte mdiese Notizen halt schon in Deutsch gemacht... wohl eh hauptsächlich für Mika interessant?!) * Beim Testen, offline im Zug(ich habe aber einen lokalen mirror, der war nur noch nicht eingestellt), bekomme ich das - obwohl ich eigentlich ein nfsroot habe und dachte, das würde genommen bei dirinstall wenn es da ist: Calling task_dirinstall Installing into directory /hier/produktion/run/grml-live/grml_chroot Calling task_extrbase Unpacking Debian base archive No base.tgz found. (ich weiß, FAI's error reporting ist nicht das Beste - aber ich dachte, daran wäre gerade im Rahmen von * Warum kann man das DEBOOTSTRAP sowohl in der make-fai-nsfroot setzen, als auch in grml-live.cfg? Besser nur eine Stelle - vielleicht in der grml-live config Datei darauf verweisen! * Ich finde die umgebaute Struktur des Configspace ein bisschen wunderlich: ** Ich denke, fai "main config" und configspace sollten nebeneinander sein, nicht verschachtelt. ** Dann sollte die location des FAI Configspace, den man benutzen will, konfigurierbar sein - dass ich, wenn ich möchte, auch einfach meinen ganz normalen, bestehenden configspace nutzen kann(eventuell dabei die für das Funktionieren des Live-Systems nötigen Klassen von GRML-LIVE in meinen importieren) ** wieso sind die Files nicht mehr im configspace, sondern eine Ebene höher und ohne klassen?! vielleicht einfacher an einigen wenigen stellen, wenn man es nur als build-system für GRML nutzt, aber für alle bestehenden FAI user, die aus ihrem configspace eine live-cd bauen wollen, ist es nur verwirred. * ich hätte gerne sowas wie grml-live clean, um bei Tests sicher zu gehen, dass ich von einer sauberen Basis ausgehen kann, und nicht ein vielleicht kaputtes oder unsauberes chroot genutzt wird. Und ja, ich kjann es von Hand löschen, ist aber mehr Arbeit als --clean-chroot / -C oder so. * es werden gpg netzwerkaufrufe gemacht während der installation - damit ist das bauen von cd's abhängig von einer internetanbindung - will ich eigentlich nicht... * Vielleicht ein generelles Problem: wenn ich die live CD in virtualbox laufen lasse, startet x nicht, weil irgendwelche vbox-module nicht gefunden werden. scheinbar fehlen mir pakete, aber grml versucht "schlau" zu sein, und die vbox xorg config zu starten... Problems with CCISS/HP Smart Array E200

Hello All! I have a small Problem with the cciss SCSI Support on GRML. I have read all the Docs i could find but without success. My Plan is to use GRML-Mini as a Rescue System on a seperate Partition. If i start from the CD everything is fine. The Partitions under /dev/cciss/c0d0pX are found. But i cant figure out what module provides the cciss Support. If i start GRML from HDD the Kernel is booting but can't find the Iso. I tried the Kernelparameter scsi=probe. But no Module is found. Hello, thanks for your answers. amixer or alsamixer shows an error error defaul load: invalid argument If i look in /proc/asound/ossmixer, the settings for volume ... are set to 0. if i do alsaconf, nothing will happen. Regards Dietmar

[grml] grml 1.1 shutdown will fail

Hello, batch your pardon for asking for your help. I have just downloaded the grml 1.1 iso und burned a live cd for playing a little bit with your nice tool. The cd starts and everything works fine. There also is no fault, when I start the cd with the grml testcd boot option. My PC has an ASUS Mainbord with an Intel Pentium III Processor. When I shutdown the PC (with shutdown -h now) the PC will hang when the cd is ejected and I have to disconnect the power to be able to restart the PC. I have no idea what went wrong. On the monitor are the following error massages: end-request: I/O error,dev hdc, sector 114876 hdc: tray open (there are a lot of this massages with different sector numbers) SQUASHFS error: Unable to read fragment cache block [2918b2b] SQUASHFS errror: Unable to read page block 2918b2b, seize 5811 /etc/init.d/halt: line 65: /sbin/halt: cannot execute binery file INIT: no more process left in this runlevel. Any suggestions how to solve the problem?

swspeak, sound shutdown on eeePC

Hello, after spending a lot of time i was able to boot grml 1.1 rC6 from a usb- stick. The swspeak starts also as brltty, but i do not hear anything. I also did not hear anything playing a mp3-file with mplayer. How can i set up the volume or unmute the soundcard, so that i can hear anything. If i shutdown the eepc with the command shutdown -h now, the PC did not shutdown properly. To turn the eeePC off, i must press the button for POWER. Regards Dietmar

Dear M and friends, Just a noob question, for no reason other than neugier. Why does debian installer, lenny, recognise both the sata and atapi cd thing, giving the correct response to cat /proc/scsi/scsi, whereas grml requires bootparameters ide1=noprobe and ide0=noprobe to get sata hdd and atapi(sata) sdr0 recognised? Hello, the sound on my eepc did not work. The soundtest means, that it works, but the alasamixer shows an error. I us grml 1.1 RC6. Is grml 1.1 RC6 the same as grml 1.1 vom 24.02.2008? I hope you can help me, because i want to use the swspeak optin of grml. Thnkas for your help Regards. Dietmar

Liberation fonts

quick question, is the liberation fonts in grml? As the liberation fonts provided by red hat being much better quality than msttcorefonts and is provided in an open license, will the liberation fonts in grml? So that grml-small can just supply this one set of core ttf fonts (plus your favorites of course). I have to use WPA-PSK. For the usb stick try this: dd if=/usr/lib/syslinux/mbr.bin of=/dev/sda this should ensure a bootable mbr. Regards Moss

Hello, last weekend i have installed grml 1.1 with help from my brother onto a partition of my normal pc, onto a sd-card (4 GB) for my eePc and onto an usb-stick (2 GB) a) On my normal pc i started the live-cd and start speakup, brltty, change the /etc/grml2hd/config. After that i start grml2hd -i for the installation. I use /dev/hdc6 for mbr and root-partition. The vmlinuz and the initrd.img and the menu.lst i copied onto my dos- partition. I want to start the grml with linld. So i create a linld.par with the following options: speakup_synth=apollo speakup_ser=0 lang=de vga=nrmal blind brltty=vo,usb,text.de.tbl root=/dev/hdc6 ro I start linld image=linux26 initrd=initrd.img from the directory, where the files are in. But i don't have any success. any ideas. b) To install grml onto a 4 GB sd-card on my eeePC, we start grml from an external usb-dvd-drive, change the config file and start grml2hd -i. The sd-Card is /dev/sda1, I have insert a new empty card and i do not change the partitiontyp or so. The installation was successfull, but the eeepc did not boot from the sd-card. We changed the boot-device so, that at first is removable medium, then the external devd/cd and then the hd. My normal card-reader for my pc did not read the 4 GB cards, only the eePc will read such cards. Any help will be great. c) With the grml2usb i have created a bootable usb-stick. But the stick did not boot. I have looke with fdisk -l /dev/sda for the boot flag is set. The boot flag (*) is set correct. Thanks and regards Dietmar

Documentation on building custom kernels for grml-live CD

Mika and Team, New stables look good on live CD and I am installing on two platforms today. Thanks. Since early grml-live scripts I have been working with custom kernels. I have been successful at patching the installed hard drives. I have been able to do this either by GNU make or make-dpkg methods. I do not seem to get predictable results if I apply changes to /grml/grml-live/grml_chroot then rerun grml-live to recreate grml_cd and grml_isos. Google doesn't give me documents specific to grml or fai. Can someone point me to it?
