Hi! The subject says it all: I was trying to find out a short outline why one should use the one or the other. As far as I can unsterstand it after a short evaluation is that both are able to do nearly the same. Both use debootstrap and are able to define hooks and afterwards a ISO is created. The advantage of grml-live seems to be the usage of the FAI-class concept but debian-live seems to be the more "official" way to do it. My motivation is a bit different than *-live and FAI provide. *-live are intended to build a Live-CD and FAI deploys a system on a running machine (by PXE or Boot-CD). I do NOT need a bootable ISO. I need the possibility to install Debian into a USB-Device or CF-Card. So I actually use the base.tar.gz (created by FAI or by an other installation) to untar it onto the target from my running system. Afterwards again some hooks are run and the bootloader is installed. I think this is ridiculous! There must be a better way. Any thoughts about this? Thanks && HAND, - Darsha

Dear Janusz, I've had a little time to look. I have 2 computers. one is an Acer laptop one year old. It would not boot freedos at all, initdisk had an opcode failure followed by a list of hex numbers which I do not understand. I tried with the grml cd and a freedos 1.0 live and installation cd. The other is an old Pentium II. It looks to me that freedos boots from CD as a floppy emulation whereas grml boots in non-emulation mode. When you type c: you ought to get an error message saying no such drive or similar. 2. When booting freedos did you choose the option with himem.sys and emm386 and shcdux (the cd driver?) Unless you have a very old system it is probably wise. 3. Perhaps you might get help from www.freedos.org as freedos on grml is kind of an added extra and I don't know if many people use it. 4. If you boot the grml cd and go grub - any key - down arrow once - enter then it boots freedos with a few utils including the dos port of testdisk. It lands on this prompt A:\TOOLS> Now if you go testdisk /list (perhaps without the backslash) then it will list all the current partitions which it can see from dos. This may give you some info as to why you cannot see the fat32 partition. 5. Lastly unless I find my old XP installation disk to try what you are doing for myself then I'm getting stuck on how else to help. Still if you have more questions then please ask. Best Wishes Moss PS I think you right that a bios by default ought to look at a usb device to boot then a cd and thirdly a hard disk. I cannot imagine that finding a usb sound system should present too much difficulty. Perhaps you should try Apple first. Might sound odd but as their EFI boot is vastly superior to the BIOS (which will be replaced in the not too distant future, I reckon) then it would be an enhancement for Apple above the competition. That is there is something in it for them!

Can Grml tell (and repair) what Fedora did?

Dear experts, I have a mini-notebook Acer One with Linpus Lite installed. Playing around with this nice little toy I successfully installed Ubuntu 9.04 (replacing Linpus) and on USB-sticks Debian Live and grml 2008.11-rc1. Everything worked perfectly. Then I wanted to install Fedora 10, which semmed to take more time than expected and so I left the Acer unattended over night. Next day the display was frozen and I tried to reboot with the Grml-USB-Stick. Booting stopped quite soon, telling me "This grml image failed to boot" and "No supported filesystem images found at /live". Then came the prompt (initramfs). Hopefully I tried the (previoulsy working) Debian Live Stick. Same thing, booting stops at (initramfs). Now I decided to start from scratch and made a new setup with Acer's recovery disk. System works fine, but Grml and Debian Live still end booting with those error messages. Can it be that the unsuccessfull Fedora installation damaged for instance the buit-in RAM or did other nasty things? Can I find out with help of Ubuntu or Grml 1.1 (works both from CDROM and from a USB-stick) what is the reason and how to return to the original state? Thankful for any help, Hubert

Dear Janusz I've not been able to look too far yet but I'll make a few comments. 1. smartdrv does appear to be a legal download http://webinstituteforteachers.org/resources/software/BOOTDISKS-FOR-GHOSTIN… is hosted by the University of Chicago 2. From memory freedos boots to X: when launched from the grml disk. I'll try to reproduce your problem of moving to a: or c: when I've got time. 3. It is some time since I've used SBM but you may have to hide other drives to see the FAT32 partition as the first partion of the first hard drive. In grub you would use the map command to make it look like (hd0,0) 4. It is another learning curve but grub4dos is a customisation of grub for Windows with certain enhancements such as looking for bootable partitions and loading them automatically. Again I am not well versed in its use. 5. The legality of dos boot disks may be difficult to say but msdos is no longer supported and I think mscdex (? I think that was the name, MS cd driver) waspreviously given away by microsoft themselves. 6. A brief look at Nlite has me thinking it is a procedure allowing you to manipulate what you paid for and I cannot imagine how it would be illegal. 7. Up to Win XP it is usually best when dual booting to install Windows first and then Linux because XP is too stupid to be aware of other operating systems - hence the necessity of 3 above. The program winnt.exe can be used for installing Windows XP from DOS, by using setupmgr.exe running from Windows XP which is fully functional, visually impaired user can make fully unattended Windows XP installation. But i Am experiencing methodological problems, for example, i can not boot To The FAT32 partition, which is containing installation files prepared by using setupmgr.exe application. I can access this partition by using Windows XP boot diskette or Windows 98 Se boot diskette, but i can not boot it by using smart boot manager. Eventhough i set The FAT32 partition as a primary, which is a condition to access this partition from DOS, fortunately, gparted is allowing this, that i did not had to use logical partition with FAT32. I could resize existing NTFS partition, and in The free space, i could specifi right start and end of this FAT32 one. Parted is using reliable and safe algorithms, if user knows, what he is doing with this tool. It is possible to boot DOS if this operating system is being installed by a first operating system, in this case, WIndows XP installation program is making officially supported activity to support booting betveen DOS or Windows XP. But i want to support visually impaired users, so they could perform unattended installation when their instalation of WIndows XP is being corrupted. There are even WEB pages with several DOS boot diskettes, which are having included CD ROM Drivers, but i do not know, if those boot disks are legal to use. And there is not many modern computers with floppy drive, and bioses are not setup by The way, so flash disk can beused for booting. And my algorithms are intended to be fully usable by non sighted users. If YOu would support me, i would be very glad. There is awaylable solution, Nlite, But i Am afraid, that Microsoft will force The author of this program to remove it from The Internet, may be, that he consulted licensing issues with The Microsoft CORP, because his WEB site and Nlite program is existing for many years. ¨His solution is working very reliably, even sound drivers can be integrated to The .iso file. But i would like to support official tools for deploying Windows XP installation. Specifying default soundcard for live CD

Hello, Is there any way to set the default soundcard to use on the GRML live CD? An example why this might be needed is for those using speakup with software speech when the computer has multiple soundcards, in this case it is useful that the user can predict which card will be used as they require audio output to use the system. If such a feature doesn't exist I am not fully sure what would be the best way to define which card should be default (eg. module used isn't unique to the model of card (however ALSA modules can recieve an option index=<card number> to set the card as a particular card number, so it indicates in the main it is useful enough), but the card name as given by ALSA may not be the easiest thing to know). Hi I was wondering where the ~/.xsession-errors file is on my grml-medium-2008.11 It there on my debian lenny install, and I could not find any google saying where the logging to .xsession-errors has to be enable. Has it been disabled in grml ? Thanks for your help Peter

Installing grml on usb stick

Hi I wanted to suggest some minor modifications to the instructions concerning the usb stick installation. I found that in order to install grml-medium-2008.11 , I had to adjust the lines in red. I also added some requirements that might not be available , when your build environment is not grml ( I suppose $medium can be replaced with the other flavors but I have not verified ): aptitude install syslinux # syslinux 3.71 or later must be available on your GNU/Linux system <http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live/liveusb.php> aptitude install dosfstools # to get mkfs.vfat * Get the grml iso * Mount the iso loopback (e.g. mount -o loop grml_small_0.4.iso /mnt/grml-iso) * Make FAT16 filesystem on the usbstick (e.g. mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/sda1) * Create a disklabel (e.g. dosfslabel /dev/sda1 GRML) * Mount the usbstick (e.g. mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/external1) * Copy everything to the usbstick (e.g. cp -r /mnt/grml-iso/* /mnt/external1). * Move all files from /mnt/external1/boot/isolinux/ (mv /mnt/external1/boot/isolinux/* /mnt/external1) and the files linux26 and the minirt.gz (since grml1.1: initrd.gz!) from the directory named like the grml-flavour (/boot/grml, /boot/grmlmedium, /boot/grml64,...) to root of usb-stick in /mnt/external1, mv isolinux.cfg to syslinux.cfg #I am not sure if this is required, though <http://www.livecd.ethz.ch/usbdisk.html> * the files linux26 and initrd.gz must remain in boot/grmlmedium # this is what is said in syslinux.cfg * Umount the usbstick and the grml-iso * Run syslinux on the usbstick (e.g. syslinux /dev/sda1) * Check if the usbstick has an valid mbr, else dd if=mbr.bin of=/dev/sda (mbr.bin is in the syslinux package, usually installed in /usr/lib/syslinux/mbr.bin) * may need to set the bootable flag using parted (or fdisk) disk layout: /mnt/external1: addons f1 .. isolinux isolinux.bin syslinux.cfg ldlinux.sys live/ filesystem.module grml-medium.squashfs boot/grmlmedium initrd.gz linux26 Pleases let me know , if I am wrong of if there are better ways to do that ( I know, there is grml2usb, but I want to be sure to understand what's going on) Thanks Peter

ASUS EEE pc

Hi list, Just took possesion of a brand-new ASUS EEE pc. Nice box, but it's currently running Windows, and I'd like to have grml on it. In researching this issue late last week, I ran across two posts, one that said that grml supports the EEE, and another that said that it would be "the next release" until it is supported. While I don't mind getting my hands dirty, I'd prefer not to have to compile any kernel stuff due to time constraints. Audio issues with grml HD installation

Hello, I have been using GRML installed to a HD for a few months now but have started to notice that recently the audio does not always start up (it sometimes works without issue but quite a number of times in the last week it hasn't). When the audio fails to start it seems to be that the modules have not been loaded and using modprobe to load the modules and "alsactl restore" brings it back as it should be. Some info about the system: Motherboard is an Asus p4pe with the soundmax onboard sound card (snd_intel8x0 is the module for this card). I also have a terratec dmx 24/96 (module snd_ice1712) installed in the system. When the sound fails to start neither card has its modules loaded. I hope this is enough system specs. My questions are: How can I confirm whether this is a hardware issue or software issue? Should I be adding the snd_intel8x0 and snd_ice1712 modules to /etc/modules or can I rely on grml's autodetection of hardware? Any other suggestions as to the cause of the problem? One thing which I can't imagine causing the problem but I feel worth mentioning as it differs from the norm, is I use speakup (www.linux-speakup.org) and recently I switched to using the speakup_apollo module (from the software synthesiser module for speakup started with boot cheatcode swspeak) for an apollo synthesiser connected to ttyS0, although I am haven't noticed any correlation between starting using speakup_apollo and the sound issue (however this is through not paying attention to exactly when I first noticed the sound issue). Remastering grml

Hi I am not sure that I understand the instructions for remastering the grml live cd ( old method, not FAI). The man page for grml-live says: Please use squashfs-lzma-tools 3.3.1 if you want to remaster release 2008.11 of grml. I want to remaster the medium flavor. As far as I can see from uname -a , grml 2008 is kernel 2.6.26. However, here <http://www.squashfs-lzma.org/>it is said that only version 2.6.27.6 is officially supported. Also , I was wondering, if this instruction does still apply to grml 2008.11 wget http://mesh.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/squashfs/squashfs2.2-r2.tar.gz $ tar xvzf squashfs2.2-r2.tar.gz $ cd /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build $ patch -p1 --dry-run < /usr/src/squashfs2.2-r2/linux-2.X.Y/squashfs2.2-patch In short, I am asking, what is the recommended way to remaster grml 2008.11 with grml2008.11 as build environment ? Hello everyone! Problem: I need to be able to assign a static address to my network card. Last night I encountered a problem with network settings in grml. Initially, I thought that I had to edit /etc/networking/interfaces to set my network properties, but that did not work. After doing some research on Google, I found a post from someone asking a similar question, and he was told too look at grml-tips udev, so I looked at that. I see that I am supposed to create a udev rule in /etc/udev/network.rules, but it doesn't tell me how to go about setting static, dhcp, etc. Where am I going wrong? Regarding the use of Pump over DHCPCD

Hi all, I wanted to ask why grml uses pump and not DHCPCD (latest bleading edge version of course) In my experience when testing grml (compared to Gentoo) or Arch Linux (both of wich use DHCPCD) GRML connected with horribal slowness to my wireless network when broadcasting for an available IP-address.. It would sleep for 60 seconds took over 5 seconds before it connected. I compared this by running DHCPCD on Arch Linux, Gentoo, etc, that use the DHCPCD program. I found no comparason. How well dos grml work on laptops now?

Mika, your wiki page on laptops hasn't been updated for a while. Could you address anything like: How to turn off the built-in LCD display etc? I'm currently hosting GRML on Windows because so many Linux accessibility solutions don't work. I'm also testing it that way because I can bridge GRML to my net card on Windows, and evn though it's wireless, my router sees an etherneted PC. I gave up using GRML natively due to a large amount of technical applicaitons, that are not accessible. Has nothing to do against GRML Regards, --Keith

Hi, I am running grml 2008.11 on my harddisk (installed with grml2hd). Everything works perfectly except that I am having problem with sound. I can watch video with mplayer but I don't hear the sound. I also can't hear the sound when openning mp3 with mplayer. The same thing as Flash plugin for Firefox. Please advise me. madwifi for grml-small

Hello everyone, Last night I installed grml-small on my laptop to give it a spin (had been using the larger version of grml). I needed to install madwifi drivers, but none were available. uname -r tells me that I'm running 2.6.26, but the madwifi modules available are of 2.6.23 and earlier. module-assistant was not able to build the modules b/c the source was not available in the repos. Can you give me any tips as to how to get this working? It's not a major issue at all, I can always go back to the larger version, but it still would be nice to know where I'm going wrong. The version of Grml should just ork fine (but you'll need to have a vm made first for it) perhaps a better question might be, "Is there a GRML Virtual Machine?" How to obtain grml kernels, and other grml components

Depending upon what components I want in the plain Debian system, how to I obtain these? I.e. If I want Grml's owrking kernel, what should I do to obtain that? And is it the Linux-source or Linux-image that I'd be looking for? Or would grml krenl just install, all symlinks taken care of, etc. What I love about grml's kernel, is I don't have to bother compiling it as all my favorite options like hibernate are already there, etc. And the hardware detection is super great. Otherwise, the question then would be: If I wanted screen, etc, that ships with grml, what suggestions would you folks suggest? I haven't used grml in so many years that now I find it hard to figure out what to do, plus the repos now use Git.:). Regards, --Keith

GRMLCFG working on 2008.11?

Hello, I started the grml 2008.11 ISO image in a virtual machine (VirtualBox 2.1.12 on OSX 10.5), which had a 5 GB hard disk. I partitioned the hard disk, and labelled one partition GRMLCFG (obviously after formatting it ;-) ). After restarting I mounted the image, and used save-config -all to created a file called config.tbz on that partition. It seems to me that when booting something from that partition is copied (long list of files), but neither the language setting nor the network settings are restored. Is this normal? Should those settings be stored, or are they excluded? As far as I understood the docu the whole /etc should be saved. During saving the config, I get errors the first time I run save-config, saying that file xyz changed during reading. Disappears the second time you run save-config. Any hints? Tricks? Bugs? Speech-Dispatcher and SMP (again)

Hi, I have previously in the last year or so posted on this subject of Speech-Dispatcher and SMP. I had previously back when testing my friend Shaun's system thought that it was only to AMD Athlon X2 3800 plus dual-core processors. I found out, that I was wrong. About four weeks ago, I tested the latest stable GRML using the grml swspeak speechd boot option at the Isolinux boot prompt on my Intel laptop. My Fujitsu laptop is pretty new. Well, shortly there after, speech crashed, again. So, I did this: Speechd-up -v Grml uses Speechd-up 0.1, wich is extremely old and out-of-date. Even the last stable release contains severe bugs. The CVS builds contain latest bug fixes. In edition to this, I discovered that GRML was using an RC version (not stable!) version of Speech-Dispatcher! Why is this? The issues seem to be caused when using Espeak-generic, and speechd-up 0.1, and Speech-Dispatcher. whether it is Speech-Dispatcher itself though, or simply Speechd-up, I don't know. In any case, I strongly suggest the espeakup interface over the Speechd-up interface (to the point of you folks ripping it completely out) It is odd though, because I thought that at least Speech-Dispatcher would contain some improvements? They were fixing SMP bugs last time I checked. Although if it is an RC version, I am not surprised. Although it may very well be an old version of Speechd-up itself. I will perform another test, on March 20, when I have some time. This time, I'll attempt to execute an instance of the Speechd-up software by typing speechd-up again, to see if it is the Dispatcher process crashing. I will also find out if there are any speech-dispatcher log levels generated through output of log contents (if any). Because Speech-Dispatcher is an interface wich uses the TCP/IP protocol, and is a client/server model, if it was Speechd-up crashing, and not Speech-Dispatcher, then it will probably generate some form of client/module disconnection in the log files. Kernel configuration PREEMPT

I have been using grml for a couple of days and I am very happy with it so far. The reason I started to use grml was that I discovered that the grml kernel was configured with the PREEMPT option. This makes it suitable for audio applications and even if the preempt characteristics you get with an RT-kernel is "better" the PREEMPT option of the vanilla kernel seems to be "good enough". With grml I get both a system that is easy to configure to me needs, boots off a USB stick and has a PREEMPT kernel :). I have looked at most distros out there and it is very rare to find ones that comes with a PREEMPT kernel as standard, so this makes me wonder why the grml team choosed to provide PREEMPT as a standard configuration. Anyone that knows this and wants to share why grml is using a PREEMPT kernel? Going forward, will the PREEMPT configuration option remain as standard in grml or might that just suddenly change? Adding packages

I am new to grml and I hope someone would be able to help me on this topic. I am running grml off a USB stick with a persistent home. I am using a number of packages not available in grml so I put these in a "debs" directory on the root of my live partition (showing up under /live/image/debs) and use the debs boot option. This works fine and all these packages gets installed when I boot. Problem 1: Adding another package to the "debs" directory Since the /live/image tree is mounted read-only I cannot add/remove any .deb files in the "debs" directory. What I do now is that I boot some other system than by USB booted grml system; mounts the USB stick and copy/remove files to/from the "debs" directory; boot from the USB stick. I would like to be able to do this without having to start some other system, but do this in the system booted from the USB stick. Is there a method that would allow me to do that. Problem 2: Avoid installation at boot The above method (putting .deb files in the "debs" directory) is very useful for finding out the packages you need to have. Once you know what packages you would need than you would be better off with a method that would not require you to install the packages on each boot, but that these packages came pre-installed. A natural way would be to either add these packages to the live system package set somehow. As I can see the live system consist of a squashfs file and a file that points out the name of this file. Is there a way to either extend the existing squashfs file or to add some additional squashfs (or other fs-type) file that will be mounted along the original squashfs file? Kind Regards /Lars

I forgot, In my last post I didn't mention: What I want to do is get the kernel installed without too much configuration or compilation in the plain Debian system. I also hope that I won't have to go configuring netowrks/interfaces manually, I'm not sure just how powerful grml-debootstrap is. What suggestions do you have? I'll probably just edit the configuration file, and get everything in place and then run whatever. Should I go with the linux-image, or linux-source deb files (what's easyer?) Whatever advice on this process specifically other than just editing grml-debootstrap's configuration file would be helpful. Installing a stable lenny would be good, so that I can receive Debain security patches, etc. I'd like to get a plain-debian installed, but have all of the accessibility of grml like Speakup, and other necesary things installed. Mika, Thanks for the messages on the digest of GRML. i have decided to use debootstrap to install a plain Debian system. You mentioned I could take a known to-work grml kernel. How would I do this for use in the plain Debian system? It would make things pretty easy then, because Speakup is already part of the kernel. I have a question or so about the grml.org daily snapshots: I know that bugs can occur majorly, and all of that. But Has anyone thought of making full grml releases that are based off of Debian stable so that people can successfully run servers with grml if they choose, without being forced to install Debian?Just curious! Another question: Do the daily snapshots of GRML contain Speakup? Or, does only the GRML devel releases etc contain accessibility support? Using stable Debian brnaches for packages on GRML

If you wish to use GRML as a hard disk system, what happens if you attempt to use stable Debian packages to avoid breaking things? Why Apache and stuff is included on a Debian-unstable system is beyond me. Especially because the software should not be included in the first place. People may get the idea that servers can be ran on grml! For a blind user that has discovered GRML, the user may go running programs/services never intended for use on GRML! What do you all think of this? I have read the Debian unstable FAQ, and the answer in that document is "Are you insaine? No!" To the question about "Should I run Debian-Sid on my server?" GRML includes Speakup accessibility, wich I require in my Linux kernels; and often don't have time to compile a Linux kernel, therefore I use GRML. Would I be better off installing a plain Debian system rather than GRML perhaps on my laptop When I get back in the next few weeks to set it up? Thanks! GRML is rather cool, but the fact that you folks have included services on it at all is a bit..concerning. What if grep or something was to break on GRML? Considering that you're based on the Sid branch. How about security related updates (wich are not provided for Debian-unstable packages) in the first place for users installing GRML directly to hard-drive? I booted grml from the live cd on macmini. I plugged an 8GB usb flash drive into the macmini. I used grml2hd to install onto my flash drive. I then rebooted macmini while the flash was plugged. Refit saw my flash drive with a linux icon. I chose to boot from that. I failed. Using GRML2HD in a productive environment...

How would GRML2hd be used in an productive environment necessarily? I'm curious about that. Also, in grml, if installed onto the hard-drive, I assume that I do not need to manually edit the network interfaces file owing to the use of the grml-netcard or grml-network scripts? The other question, is this. I have an Internet domain that I want GRML to be able to resolve to an IP address, or at least realize that the domain exists. So, hear is my question. What happens in grml if I add to resolv.conf: search "domain.org" without quotations, (assuming) that domain.org existed? hi. i use grml a lot. like it a lot too. i install to usb with grml2hd and everything is fine. i boot my grml usb almost as much as my hdd. i just testing slitaz livecd and use the tazusb tools. imho, this tazusb is perfect way to install live distro to usb. please check it: http://www.slitaz.org/en/doc/manuals/tazusb.en.html the filesystem still compressed just like 'frugal' install only the /home folder is written directly on usb. this way, it minimize writes to usb, which prolong the flashdrive live. but, we can use tazusb writefs to write any changes to the rootfs. and if we do bad things to rootfs (sudo rm -rf /usr), we can easily boot and get back to previous state. nothing lost. I was wondering, how difficult it is to install the Gnome environment inside the GRML environment when installed onto a hard-disk drive? Probably an aptitude-install Gnome does it. However, Hear is what I was wanting to know. I have purchased the VMWare Workstation package, and have a registered serial number for it. It's a standard tar formatted file, with a Tar.GZ extention added onto the end of it. Extracting it isn't my problem. The problem is, how will I instruct it to boot the necessary VMware services on boot of GRML itself? Hi, How do you define the best file manager? To me, the only standard is how powerful it is. Thus, for me the winner of the best file manager is pfm, http://p-f-m.sourceforge.net/, because there is no other file managers that are more powerful than it. To justify my claim, let me begin with a quote from vshnu: "when one is concerned about file manipulation and management ..., a CLI can be a frustratingly terse interface... A GUI file manager can address this problem, but then you... have lost the advantages of the CLI." I.e., pfm has the normal advantage of a GUI file manager, but its unique feature that allows you to manipulate and manage file and file names using the CLI interface makes it stands out from the crowd. Moreover, there is no other file manager that aligns better with the spirit of grml than pfm's *text based* GUI interface. To explain it, let me begin with a (long) story, - Normally, filename completion, wildcarding and the "xargs" command can cover 99% of my file/directory manipulation and management needs. - If "xargs" is not powerful enough, I use doeach (http://ostatic.com/doeach), which allows me to deal with source file's path, name, and extension separately, and it can build redirection, piping easily on the command line. E.g., piping the selected files through gz and redirect the results in another diectory, named as backup.<org_name>.`date -I`.<org_ext>. - But there are times when a visual point-and-shoot file selection system beats wildcarding. This is the only time that I need file manager, i.e., for arbitrary file selection (and operation). The file manager of my choice is PFM. it allows me to build arbitrary file operation shell command (with the arbitrary selected files). That's the main reason, when back in DOS days, I preferred pfm than NC (OK, I admit that I'm biased). For e.g., a very simple example, covert a bunch of *selected* files as .png files. PFM is able to do: covert file1.gif file1.png covert file2.Gif file2.png covert file3.JPG file3.png . . . Using a simple PFM command: convert =2 =1.png Another more simpler one is, I keep all the pictures from my digital camera on disk, but also maintain a much much smaller list of picked, good ones. I use pfm to pick the good ones, and create symlink in another directory to the pick ones. You can think of other cases as well. My point is, there is no other file manager that can help me to the above except pfm (I've (almost) tried every file manager in OSS world). Moreover, the pfm maintainer, Rene, is very helpful too. FYI, there is a new release that recently came out, with lost of good improvements. I hope everybody will find it useful, and wish that pfm will be included in grml repo. Hello Mika, i have installed grml 1.1 onto a harddisk and done every week an update/ safe-upgrade with aptitude. In the file source.list are the lines for debian set to unstable. But now lenny ist stable, can i change the this lines in the source.list file to use a stable lenny with the functions of grml/stable? The the second is, that my cyberjack (0xc4b:0x0300) will not work with chipcardd4. The cjgeldkarte will work, but geldkarte loaded will only errors. I use aqmoney 0,6.3 with an chpcard-version and openhbic on an slackware 10.2, but i don't habe found these packages for grml/debian. and compiling the sources will produces only errors. Booting 2008.11 takes 4 minutes!

I use grml 1.1 but wanted to test the new 2008.11 version. I noticed 2 very annoying features: When it reads "Searching for grml file, this might take a few seconds" in reality it takes 3:30 minutes before the program continues. But only to stop again at "Waiting for /dev to be fully populated" for about 30 seconds. How can I avoid these stops in execution? I tried all the no....options (noautoconfig, nodhcp, noquick) but without any success. Any ideas? Hubert

Hy, I use grml for a quite some time so I did not recognize this before, but there seems to be no "back" Buttons e.g. in grml2hd (and maybe other tools I did'nt tested yet) and sometimes it would be nice to jump back before write something to the config or if you forgot to "mark" something with the spacebar (marked it, but (_) instead of (*) ) and ESC also is not working. I did'nt not found any hints that this "issue" exist on the list so I wondering if this was wanted so... maybe this could be "fixed" with the next release?! best regards Henrik

X11 forwarding

Right so Mika sorted my wlan and I've cured a sound defect myself. There is no urgency whatsoever in this, but I'll ask out of curiosity. The last nuisance puzzling me is X11 forwarding inside my simple home lan. Sounds silly perhaps but I'm just learning how to network for myself. I can X11 forward from my secure shell account based in London: Thus user@laptop$ ssh -fX moss(a)mythic-beasts.com xclock gives me an xclock. This tells me that at least my Xserver and ssh on the laptop must be configured right for X11 forwarding. The home lan is simply the laptop a wireless router BTVOYAGER2110 and my trusty old Pentium II PC. The PII is wired into the router so communication between the laptop and the PII is through the router. There is no longer a monitor connected to the PII. user@laptop$ ssh -fX user@PII xclock gives "Error: Can't open display:" followed by a blank line. ssh has failed to set the environmental variable $DISPLAY. It is exactly the same if I put a wire directly between PII and the laptop and configure a static network. The laptop is running grml-2008.11 with apt pointed at Lenny but the PII run grml-1.0 pointed at Etch. user@laptop$ ssh -Xvvv user@PII gives this output after accepting the password debug2: x11_get_proto: /usr/bin/X11/xauth list :0.0 2>/dev/null debug1: Requesting X11 forwarding with authentication spoofing. debug2: channel 0: request x11-req confirm 0 debug2: client_session2_setup: id 0 debug2: channel 0: request pty-req confirm 1 debug3: tty_make_modes: ospeed 38400 debug3: tty_make_modes: ispeed 38400 debug1: Sending environment. Hi all Wonder if any one has a suggestion for me. I've wiped vista off my laptop, an Acer Aspire 5920. and installed Schlutenscheisser. I've got couple of problems but I'll just mention the wifi for now. On boot something odd is happening to the wifi. Hello, for a time i have installed the grml 1.1 on two harddisk and onto a usb- stick (GB). With the commands aptitude update and aptitude safe-upgrade i look for the newest program-updates. But now i have some questions: 1. What is the sudo password for the first User, i mean the user, that tehe grml2hd-script will create (i have changed the configfile for my needs). 2. How can i upgrade from grml 1.1 to grml 2008, especielly the kernel and scripts? 3. What can i do to become a better performance on my usb-stick, shall i create a fstab for my needs, so that the temoraryfiles are into the ram and so. Are there any examples. 4. After updating/upgrading with aptitude and the end of the procedur im become an error "update-initramfs can not create/update initrd ..., use -t switch". Shall i use the command update-initramfs -d -t to fix this or is there a configfile? 5. If i log in as user x and start lynx, surf with lynx to an audiostream (mp3/rm or so) or to an internetradiostream, the mplayer will start, but nothing is to hear, mplayer will stop and lynx is back. The sound works and if i start the mplayer with the directlink to the radiostream, that will work. Any ideas? 6. How can i addd old debian packages, especielly i want to use the aqmony 0.6.3, the openhbci and the libchipcard version, which works with the old aqmoney 0.6.3. I have tryied to compile the programs, but the gcc 4.3.x will produce a lot of errors and i am not so familiar with c an c++ to fix this errors. thanks for your help. Regards Dietmar

How to create custom xorg.conf?

Hi and thanks for creating such a great live cd! I have managed to build a custom grml using the fabulous grml-live scripts. I've included the Nvidia driver and b43 firmware and the LXDE desktop. This is all working perfectly. One thing I have not been able to accomplish however is setting SHMConfig to "on" automatically. I'm not using grml as an HDD installation but rather from live cd booted toram from a USB device. If I could figure out how to automatically edit xorg.conf that would be great. I need this because I use touchfreeze to stop the touchpad from accepting input as I type on my laptop. I do see that SHMConfig is already in xorg.conf but it is commented. Any ideas on how to accomplish this? Option "SHMConfig" "on" Thanks again. -- glenn greenfield

new possible solution for blind grml users and x programs

To whom it may concern: \ I have found something that I think shows some promise for use by all the people who use speakup and do not wish to go to a graphical user environment in order just to get on line. The program is called twin. This stands for text mode windowing environment. It can be found at http://linuz.sns.it/~max/twin/ There is a detailed tutorial as well as a sample configuration file includєd with the program. However, it makes little sense to me as I have no experience configuring x displays. What I am trying to do with this programし is to get it to work in the following way: First of all, interact with x programs as it says it will, but with the result that it will: bring the output of those programs back to a reぐular tty display where speakup is active. However, with all the attaching, detaching, running on x servers, display numbers and the rest, I am totally lost. If some person here can help me in configuring this program to work as a text mode solution to a graphical problem, I will be most greatful. Thank you in advance. [PATCH] bootoption findiso

Hi mika, Hi all, I liked it when I read in the announcement that grml-2008.11 supports a fromiso bootoption. I wanted to use it for my USB thumb drive, so that I can add the .iso file to it (so that I can burn a CD if I need one) and as well boot from it (without requiring twice the space). However, it did not work as I expected: - it does not search for the ISO, but require the exact device name - it does not expose the ISO partition to the booted system So I patched the initramfs so that it supports another bootoption, "findiso". When booting with findiso=/grml_2008.11.iso, it will look for that .iso file on all disks where it usually looks for the .squashfs file. When it is found, the disk containing the iso is read-only mounted as /live/findiso (and exposed there after boot completed). The squashfs file is searched inside that ISO file then. Dear core developers, I successfully solved problem with hardware autodetection, but how to install Gnome? Is it possible to install Gnome while installing GRML from A live Cd by using grml2hd script or some programmers limitations are included so Gnome will not be awailable for installation? While i tried to install gnome by using apt-get install gnome All packages were successfully downloaded from The Interne. But when system displaied retrieving bug reports, the progress came from 0 to 100 percent. But after this, system asked me if i wanted to upgrade somethink, i ansferred yes but after this, apt-get stopped to work, or this operation can take so many minutes? Because i forced terminated by using ctrl c key, i was not able to continue, because when retrieving bug reports appeared, zero percent progress has been displaied and system stopped to work, so i had to terminated apt-get by pressing ctrl c. So. How to install Gnome?

Dear core developers of GRML, I would like to inform You, that i experienced serious problem with hardware autodetection. When i finished installing grml by using grml2hd script, the system gives me varning, that sound mixer can not be set and all plug and play devices, such as USB compatible braille display can not be used. The main reason of this is, that special script for configuring xserver, which can be launched during installation could not finish it's work. Sudo displaied some error message and i had to terminate The algorithm of program for configuring xserver. Hardware and service configuration tool did not caused errors, so my pleasment is, if You could find the cause, why sudo could not work and tool for configuring hardware for xserver could not executed it's job successfully. Because xserver will be unfortunately probably executed by default, and i do not know, how to force kill it, if killall gdm will help me, how to activate console, CTRL altf1 do not work. When login window appear. And i do not know, how to remove xserver when booting from A live CD. Please, if You could enable option, install for visually impaired users to grml2hd script, so no xserver will be installed and user would have possibility to start swspeak Speakup screen reader and could install gnome for his need, everythink would be very good. I solved boot problems, i started to using smart boot manager and i would like to recommend this boot manager to all visually impaired users, because this boot manager can be installed to A floppy and after booting from this floppy, user can choose which operating system to boot and boot manager will not install on A hard drive. GAG will install on A floppy, but installation process must be perform in the mode, when gag is started from floppy disk. And installation can not be probably made to A floppy. so if You do not want to modifi Your first track of Your harddisk, I Am highly recommending You to use smart boot manager, the errors with hardware can not becaused by the fact, that i booted by using this boot manager. Smart boot manager is very little program, and installation can be made from running Windows operating system, but while using DOS prompt. But user has full control during installation, other boot managers must be installed very often from The boot media and screen readers are not able to work in those programs. So please, if core developers of grml2hd script could repair bug while xserver hardware configuration starts, it would be ok. GRML2script is recommending users to ansver yes to perform this task, from A live CD. It is paradox situation, that Grml autodetection algorithms are working ammazingly while booting it like A live Cd, but after installing it on A harddrive, hardware autodetection algorithms are not able to configure hardware so GRML can not use plug and play compatible devices. I will probably have to reinstall whole GRML without ansvering yes to a question related to autoconfigure of grmlx, because script for installing clean debian seems to me be more complicated that grml2hd script questions. And i would like to use grml, because there are some modifications and never modules and more admin tools. Even server related programs are included in The GRML package, so visually impaired user could theoretically work like a server administrator, if HTTP and FTP server tools are programmed to be usable from shell or console or atleast from Gnome. So only user knowledge will be limit, because speakup, even yasr is included in Grml package. Please, core developers of grml, do not think about me, that I Am only listing crytism, i want to constructively cooperate with You. But because i AM not so highly intelligent like core developers, it is complex for me to repair scripts and adjusting hardware configuration by other way, than by grml2hd script. Firstly, i will have to ban installation of xwindow. Because if i can not kill xwindow by altering console, i will not be able to work.

2008.11 & Acer Aspire One A110L

Hi, ich hab hier folgendes Szenario, Acer Aspire One A110L Netbook (8GB SSD, 512MB), die Installation der letzten grml-Version über USB gebootet und mit grml2hd installiert: lief einwandfrei. Soweit so gut. Mit 2008.11 kann ich per USB ohne Probleme booten, d.h. der Stick und die Installation da drauf sind OK, wenn ich aber die 2008.11 vom Stick boote und mit grml2hd auf das Netbook installiere funktioniert das auch erstmal problemlos, aber beim nächsten boot paniced der Kernel. Wenn ich mit lilo installiere ist der MBR wenigstens installiert und das ganze steigt erst im Kernel aus, wenn ich die Installation mit grub mache muss ich von USB booten, auf die installierte Version chrooten und den MBR neu schreiben, sonst gibts einen "Error 2". Aus den Meldungen des Kernels beim panic werde ich nicht wirklich schlau, ich tippe aber gerne den Hex-Tracecode ab bei Bedarf. Letzte Meldung ist "Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!". Ich bin kein Kernel-Hacker und bevor ich da jetzt stundenlang rumsuche und google frage ich hier lieber nach. Jemand eine Idee? Ich mach auch gerne den Testdödel fürs Acer Aspire One allgemein, ihr müsst mir nur reinwerfen, was ihr braucht ... There is something wrong here. If you cannot boot your grml installation on the hard disk then you have been trying to install gnome into a running liveCD. Then you will have used up all the RAM. Have I not understood properly? Grub can not boot to Grml, and while i using live Cd and mounting SDA\5, there are files, apt-get is working, but i can not log as my user name specified during grml2hd installation process. And it is probably inpossible to boot from live CD, mounting SDA5 device and then triing to install somethink. MM: I don't understand why you cannot log in as a normal user. There is a file in /etc/grml/ where the configuration is stored for using grml2hd in a non-interactive way. This file can be edited in at your leisure and then grml2hd can be done something like this (except I'm not sure about the exact capitalised words): # GRML2HD-NONINTERACTIVE grml2hd partition=/dev/sdsa5 mbr=/dev/sda5 filesystem=ext3 user=janusz MM: This ought to install OK - but I've said that before. No,It's seems to me, that i will have to delete my logical and extended partition and resize my primari NTFS partition to original size and i will have to give it up. I have done my best. Grml2hd script is little confusing, it gaves me several questions and unfortunately, asked me twice, where to install boot loader and for my user name and password. Eventhough i answerred for those question for twice time with a same answer, somethink probably gone wronk. That i can not switch users. MM: I'm wondering if swspeak can only have a single user. I'll investigate and ask the developers if I cannot find out. You have tried very hard and it seems that there might be some possible improvement in clarity for blind users in the grml2hd script. Dear Janusz, Yes from the LiveCD if you do hd it will boot from the hard disk. Similarly hd1 or hd2 if you have two hard disks. I am glad it worked out OK in the end. I attach a file with all of the booting options. Don't know why they call it cheat codes since it is not cheating. If you can negotiate your way around it is possible to boot sda2 from the cd using grub. I'll will try to work out the recipe for you to try. you have to get to a grub commandline (so a grub boot floppy would do it) and then do grub>configfile (hd0,1)/boot/menu.lst (hd0,1) is grub talk for sda2. This will bring up the grub menu and you just press enter to boot grml. There is a good method to make a copy of your XP partition with ntfsclone. You need a back up medium such as a usb hard drive to save the disk image on. It compresses all empty space. It is better than partimage but you still need to back up the mbr separately with a dd command. Thank you Moss PS Try moving the timeout command to the top of boot.ini You should then have 30 seconds to see the choice of what to boot grml or XP. Please, has GRML official live Cd option to boot from hard disk? I do not have problems with sound cart, i can type grml swspeak, but only from live CD. My sound cart has been automatically detected. So i will try to find out, if Ext2 partition is containing readable installation or if i only created non functional havoc. Windows XP is intouched and can be normally used without crashes. Do you managed to format the whole hard drive to ext3. grml also has rescue tools for such a case, though you will have lost data. If there is something precious to you lost then look at the documentation for ddr-help, ddrescue, gddrescue and testdisk. Sorry not to be of more help just now. Testdisk can see lost partitions are try to restore them. It can read the files on lost partions if they are not too badly damaged. I do not have a lot of experience with these tools. Moss

Janusz Thank you for the complement but I'm not really an expert. I've just made all the same mistakes that you make! Don't worry. Windows is blessedly stupid. ntldr will boot anything you tell it to. Put in your grml CD and boot it as normal or just type failsafe as it will be faster. Then mount the Windows partition like this: # ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 Now we copy the boot sector of the grml partition to the root directory of the Windows partition. Make sure the typing is correct when you do # dd if=/dev/sda3 of=/mnt/sda1/bootsect.sda3 bs=512 count=1 Use your text editor to add the next 2 lines to the bottom of boot.ini C:\bootsect.sda3="grml" timeout=30 Then reboot into Windows: # shutdown -r now ntldr should now give you a choice of booting windows or grml. Dear users and developers, I downloaded The latest stable release of GRML, and i Am very satisfied with this distro so i would like to use it on my harddrive. But I Am having problems. I have one IDE harddrive with capacity 55,6 GB, with one NTFS partition in size 21,4 GB. In The rest of my harddrive, i created extended partition, but no EXT3 or other, i only created extended partition, no formatting it. When I Am running GRML2hd script, The script is giving me information, that there is partition and free space above 34 GB. No NTFS word is occurring in this information. So: Will GRMLhd2 format this extended partition automatically without destroiing my NTFS existing one? Or i have done a mistake, that i created extended partition? If so, i can remove this extended partition, but please, what i could do to install GRML to A hard disk with Windows Xp on it? Grml2hd script is also giving me question, where to install boot manager. If to MBR or to other place. How to confirm The right choice by keyboard press, i AM visually impaired user. Thank You for Your information. I do not like Windows Xp installations and removing wrongly created operating systems installation by using partition managers. Hi, I found a linux distribution that works! it's an older one with software speech. it's grml 1.1. and it works good. So, vibuntu may not work on this machine, but oralux and grml 1.1 work fine. ok, so now I have a question. can someone tell me, keeping in mind that I have never used linux before in my whole entire life, I am a complete newby to grml and commandline linux. But if I am going to be a network administrator I will need to learn some kind of Linux distribution, what matters is that it has a Linux kernel which of course, grml has it because it's Linux... so, can someone give me an introduction to it? my wife's machine has a virus in it called c:\windows\system32\drmclienp.dll . pay attention to spelling. so I want to delete this file and therefore get rid of the virus. but windows will not let me access the file. so how do I do this using grml linux 1.1? Also, will voxin work with grml linux? And also, can someone tell me how to partition my hard drive and install grml Linux1.1 alongside Windows xp? grml1.1 uses ESpeak for speech. Hi, Well I am now sold! from now on I will use grml and oralux as my operating systems. oralux is outdated but makes a great audio desktop. grml well? as the article says, "it just works!" oh and I learned that I can also install gnome with orca on grml if I want a desktop. and I imagine IBM tts as well. Hi, Once I can get this grml linux installed to the hard drive, can I? 1. remove the x-windows graphical environments because I don't need them. 2. remove all applications I don't need. 3. install voxin for use with speakup or brltty. 4. set up my wireless USB adapter so I can have internet access in grml command-line? 5. if I want x-windows gui, can I install gnome desktop with orca and use that? ubuntu doesn't want to work on here, so maybe gnome then will work with grml1.1? 6. once I got it all customized, including having automatic speech at startup, could I use some grml text-based software could to make my own custom linux live-cd/install cd? oh and I read that for text-mode 64mb of ram is recommended so this grml would work great on legacy machines, also. and doubleTalk hardware speech only costs $200 or so. so that's not bad either. Hi friends, I am using GRML 1.1 Linux that comes with AWESOME 2.2-rc1 (Digital Love). It is awesome except that I am having a small problem. Whenever I change the focus to another window, I have to press "enter" before I can actually do anything with that window. But sometimes, I don't have to. Do you have any idea? I have also tried the latest version and the problem still exists. I think it is a bug in the version of awesome that has been integrated with grml. grml normal won't boot up

Hi, I have a dell dimension8200 with nvidia video card, sound blaster live sound card 80gb hard drive, and 512mb of ram. grml won't boot when I put the cd in. it acts like it wants to, but then it just hangs. it will boot on my wife's computer though. I am blind, so I would like to have software speech if possible. software speech in grml works fine on my wife's computer. Remastering grml64

Hi, In the past I have succesfully used grml-small as the basis for a customised rescue CD. I had to add some packages, which was relatively easy to do as I could copy the contents of the squashfs filing system, chroot into it, add packages to my hearts desire and recreate the squashfs file. Now I am trying to do the same with grml64-small, which proves to be quite a challenge. I am no longer able to mount the file with the root filing system... squashfs doesn't recognise it even though the name suggests its a squashfs filing system in a file (live/grml64-small.squashfs). I do not necessarily need the latest version of grml... I am quite happy with the older version. However I do need a 64bit kernel so I am able to get grub installed from within a 64bit userland (one of the reasons for making the rescue CD). My problem would likely be solved if I would know how to access the root filing system in live/grml64-small.squashfs, make changes (adding packages, setting passwords etc) and recreate the file. Netboot package for grml64 2008_11

Hello, Is there a netboot package for grml64 2008_11? If not, is there a script to create one? I may need to use PXE to boot a machine that requires a recent kernel (2.6.26 should be fine) for driver support. I've used GRML a number of times and it has always solved my problems (e.g., booting issues after making a mistake with a kernel upgrade). Also, thanks are due to the grml developers for including BRLTTY in the distribution, enabling it to work with my braille display hardware immediately on boot.

First contact with grml_small 2008.11

Hi Thanks a lot for the new release. I just installed grml_small and it works fine. I had to tweak things and I do not know if this was due to my ignorance, if it was a feature or a bug, so I just report it: I did the harddisk install (grml_small) and I _unselected_ dhcp. I noticed on startup that pump was working, and in fact , the dhcp option was activated ( = yes ) in the autoconfig file. I also noticed that networking was not in the onlevel column (2,3,4,5) in runlevel.conf, I am not sure if this is necessary, but after the install, networking did not come up on rebooting. I also was wondering , why resolv.conf was symlinked to some other file. As far as I understood, if dhcp is not used,than resolv.conf is required and should not be overridden on startup. Finally I was wondering , if utf8 should not be the default even in grml_small (echo $LANG returns "C"). Again, please forgive if these are newbie questions and thanks for you help Peter

Hi, Quick question, how the grml cd image is created (from a directory)? GRML-and-Spelling Issues with Speakup?

Well, I am considering upgrading, but I wonder if an issue with Speakup is fixed in GRML, where when reading, I mostly hear words spelled instead of pronounced. When searching an archive of Speakup, there are mentions of pre-empting a colonel. Thanks in advance for any tips in fixing this Hart
