can't mount squashfs

Hi, I am trying to modify the grml CD to allow me to include the Dell open management tools. This is so that I can boot from a grml CD and configure the RAID controller on a Dell server. I am trying to follow the instructions on the wiki but I can't mount the squashfs. The error message I get is below. I am trying this on a debian squeeze machine with a 2.6.30 kernel. # mount -o loop -t squashfs ./new/live/grml.squashfs ./loop/ mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so oot@lambeau:~/grml#I have done

Hi! We need your help! http://grml.org/download/ sucks from user's POV. Too overloaded, rc vs. stable not clearly visible,.. We'd like to see that page improved. I for myself like the way Ubuntu is doing that with http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download We already have a GeoIP setup for our mirrors (being http://download.grml.org/), we just don't have an according integration into our homepage yet. What I'd like to see: * a "wizard-like" download webpage, similar to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download * provide an easy way to choose between the flavours (default to grml-full, 32bit) and stable vs. testing/development versions (release candidates and maybe even dailys from daily.grml.org?) * provide a better integration of checksum (files) and information about flavours * [ your place for innovation :) ] You think you could help us? Hi, I have read all documentation available throughout http://www.grml.org itself. Despite all this, I am presented with a situation that I'm trying to figure out. The GRML kernel for quite sometime now (beginning with release 2009.10 and above) has continued to provide excilent support for my wireless card in a new laptop computer that I recently aquired. I happily have been executing grml-network to configure the wireless card, enable WPA-encryption, and everything else needed to launch primary networking on the GRML CD with the Speakup Linux screen reader, and as of right now am using present available stable release of GRML LiveCD. What I am trying to do is: 1. Install a Debian system (rather than GRML directly to hard-drive) however: 1. Somehow I need grml's kernel (the one compiled for 64-bit support) the present available version to somehow be used in the Debian environment on my hard-drive, because you folks have already taken care of the Speakup modules, and the CPU frequency scailing and other options. I'm trying to figure out to do that, and the second thing I am asking for assistance in doing is: How to insure that WPA works out of the box with the given wireless network I'm trying to use (or that grml-network) will be able to make use out of the Debian system to assist me with this task. That's specifically what I'd like to do-I just don't want to have to spend millions of hours trying to fight the grml-specific stuff to get what I'm trying to get working. Timezone problem

Hi! When booting grml on a system where Windows is installed and the hardware-clock is set to local time I often get annoyed when finding out that the timestamps are all wrong because grml assumes the system is set to UTC. There might be a boot option to fix this ("grml gmt tz=..." ?) but I would prefer such an option somewhere in the start menu. Would that be possible or is there another way for doing that (quickly)? Hello, i use the grml-squeeze with kernel 2.6.31 on my netbook asus 1005ha-m. I use speakup and brltty. But i want to show another User some photos or videos. mplayer did not use any video output. Lsmod show me, that there is now video driver loaded. Which driver must i load, to use mplayer with which -vo option to show another user a video? Thanks Dietmar

pxe-boot-problems

Hello, i'm using grml the first time, and i run in some problems. I followed this guide http://wiki.grml.org/doku.php?id=terminalserver to boot grml via pxe. My default config-file looks like this: ----- LABEL grml KERNEL linux26 APPEND root=/dev/nfs rw nfsroot=main:/nfs/grml boot=live lang=us nomce quiet apm=power-off nodhcp noprompt noeject initrd=minirt26.gz vga=791 ----- I copied the linux26 and the minirt26.gz file to my tftpboot-directory. PXE-booting worked before. I mounted the grml-medium_2009.10.iso using 'mount -o loop' to /nfs/grml. This path (/nfs) is entered in the /etc/exports and works fine. While booting, i get the message: ------ Could not find kernel image: linux ------ If you look above in my default the kernel is set this way: KERNEL linux26 so, i first don't unterstand the sense of this message, because the kernel is named: linux26 Second, after renaming linux26 into linux, this message don't occurs, but the system is going down, soon. grml-quickconfig behavior

grml-quickconfig currently always shows its menu until q or enter is pressed. This means if you just start to write a text, or press a cursor key after booting you will see multiple time grml-quickconfig. After booting grml now several times i would like to change the grml-quickconfig behavior to exit immediately if a wrong key is pressed. What do you think? Keep the current behavior or change it? Hi, I need to do something I didn't do for years: booting grml from a hard disk without findiso and/or isofrom (since both options don't seem to work when the disk is /dev/cciss/c0d0p1). grml 2009.10: strange behavior of networking script?

Hello. Booting grml on a machine connected by cable to a LAN comprising a DHCP-Server brings up two interfaces, lo and eth0. Both are included in /etc/network/interfaces by means of the "auto" stanza and work just as one would expect. If I prompt # invoke-rc.d networking stop nothing seems to happen. According to ifconfig, both interfaces remain up and the network is still available. If this command is repeated two more times using start and stop as argument, eth0 will be brought down while lo remains up. From now on, invoke-rc.d start|stop will bring eth0 up / down every time it gets invoked with the respective argument. Btw., there's the very same behavior if I prompt /etc/init.d/networking instead of invoke-rc.d networking What I'd actually expect, is invoke-rc.d networking stop to bring down eth0 already the first time. At least, this behavior can be seen on Debian. Thus, I'm way confused. Is something going wrong here? Am I missing something? Anything else? Thanks in advance, Peter Mattern

Set resolution of grml-small in Virtualbox

Oh... it doesnt depend on the kernel version. My second VM with grml 2009.10 kernel 2.6.31 only had the first time started a /dev/fb0 and a decent screenresolution. After grml2hd and reboot i put vga=792 by hand in the grub2 commandline - not in a grub configuaration file! - manually by hand! - there is no /dev/fb0, screen is small. So please help me, how do i configure a working framebuffer? Thanx ;-)

Hi folks, i am constrained to use M$ XP in a training course, but allowed to have Virtualbox. So i took a daily snapshot with debian/sid flavour, 2.6.33 kernel, started succesfully, installed to HD and booted several times. I am not able to change the screenresolution by kernel commandline vga=792. I downloaded 2009.10 too, it starts with vga=791 and the size looks good. Ah: 1) daily snapshot ls -l /dev/fb* -> no such device 2) 2009.10 ls -l /dev/fb* -> /dev/fb0 Looks like 2.6.33 gives me no framebuffer device. Can you help me to get a decent screensize?

Situation: Ich starte qemu auf der Konsole mit: qemu-system-x86_64 -M pc -hda /mnt/7/qemu/Platte.img -smp 2 -m 1024 -cdrom /dev/cdrom -soundhw sb16 -net nic,vlan=0 -net user,vlan=0,hostname=emu -k de -monitor stdio -boot d Bochs BIOS 1.206 1) Standardinstallation mit qemu: Keine Probleme bis jetzt. 2) GRML bootoperation: in RAM laden *Installation hängt ca. jedes zweite Mal *grml-x versagt immer (fluxbox) (existierendes X am Wirtssystem), grml stibt sofort.(außer in einem Terminal unter X) Tastatur ist dann nicht funktionsfähig *grml holt sich bei der Netzkonfiguration alles von qemu, irgendwie nicht so gut Fragen: Erkennt grml64 Hello-Wien nicht -k de von qemu? (Das ist schon rätselhaft, weil die Netzkonfiguration sehr wohl übernommen wird) Wie gibt man grml Parameter mit? qemu kannn das nicht und tut das nicht. Wer hat am squashfs ausgearbeitet für grml?? Gibt es Interesse an überarbeitetem deutschem Buch zu qemu? trying to replace console-tools with kbd

To set the font in my framebuffer console, I'd like to use kbd, as the consolechars command that comes with console-tools seems to only work with 8-pixel wide fonts [1]. I find `consolechars -f` is unable to load a majority of the fonts in /usr/share/consolefonts. A while back on an earlier grml (don't recall exactly which version), I replaced console-tools with kbd and was then able to load any font in /usr/share/consolefonts using the setfont command. Now (grml2008.11 installed to hd) when I try to install kbd, aptitude wants to remove grml, grml-autoconfig & grml2hd [2]. I don't need grml2hd, but removal of grml is problematic, as this in turn tries to remove lots of other things as well. Is there a recommended way to replace console-tools with kbd? grml-debootstrap problems

Hello, I am trying to install debian using grml-debootstrap but I get an error about it not finding MAKEDEV. I retried but adding the makedev package to /etc/debootstrap/packages but it still fails with the error. Infact it seems like the packages in /etc/debootstrap/packages are not being installed (eg. what is left in the mount point doesn't contain zsh either or commands related to other packages I try and add). This is just using the standard grml 2009.10 CD. It has just occurred to me, I never do anything to update packages on the CD first, was there a problem with the grml-debootstrap on the 2009.10 CD? Hello, If I were to use grml-debootstrap to install a debian system what are my options for boot managers? I normally prefer to install the boot manager in the partition but I believe grub2 doesn't support this. So is there a way for me to install grub-legacy or lilo when using grml-debootstrap or is there a way to get grub2 to install to the partition? Michael Whapples

Hi all, I was curious if GRML64 is accessible to users with blind disabilities by default, as in the 32-bit world of GRML. Secondly, I had a question: While the newer splash menu works niecly for a person with sight, that new menu servs little use for me. How do I go back to the standard boot prompt without the fancey menu before typing "grml swspeak" (without quotes) at the boot of the CD? I am just curious what I can do. jmicron network card driver installation fails

hi there, I'm running grml with a 2.6.26 kernel on an asus eee box b202 which has unfortunately a JMicron network card. I want to install the driver (ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/jmc2xx/) manually because the driver is not included. As mentioned in the readme .txt I did: apt-get install linux-source-$(uname -r) apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r) apt-get install build-essential After 'make install' I got the following error: make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.26-grml/build: No such file or directory. Stop. make: *** [all] Error 2 Any suggestions? Hi, In the meantime if anyone wants to try the africa install an accessible linux distro and report back on how it works that'll be great. if I get the money over christmas I'll probably buy myself a cherrypal africa to play with. hopefully it will let me wipe the hard drive and install grml, vinux cli or knoppix adriane. I know that ubuntu and vinux gui won't work because they need too much memory but I think adriane and the command line interface or console accessible linux distributions aught to work fine. Josh

How to use GRML to check whether a hard disk is failing

Hello, I am wondering whether GRML can help me here. I have agreed to check a computer (tomorrow) for someone as it isn't booting properly (its a windows XP computer). By the sound of it I suspect the hard disk is failing or totally failed or windows has become corrupted to the point it won't boot. So my question is, how (if) can I use GRML to check whether the HD has failed? I know that the BIOS probably will give suitable warnings, but I am visually impaired and so BIOS is inaccessible to me, GRML is good from that angle as I have a way of accessing a computer without relying on what's on it. Problem with speakup on grml 2009.10

Hello, I have just written the grml 2009.10 CD but I notice that for some reason when I try and boot it with options for speakup with software speech output (either the swspeak option or speakup.synth=soft option) it isn't recognised. The strange thing is it seems to be that when I give an option to enable software speech output with other options then grml doesn't seem to recognise the other options either. Here is what I have done to try and check what happens and also to try and confirm it isn't me: * When this first happened I thought may be it was me doing something wrong (as I get no output at the boot screen) so I tried again but still the same result. * I have written it to another CD (at a slower speed as well) incase something has gone wrong with the CD or went wrong while writing it, still things don't work. * When I give the other options on their own they work fine (the other options are either brltty or blind) * I tried running swspeak once the booting finished and this started software speech output. * I rebooted again specifying swspeak and blind at the boot prompt (still nothing, expected from previous attempts) I then checked /proc/cmdline and dmesg to try and find out what it says I gave at the command line, none of the options I gave were there. I am now stuck as to why this is happening. Also I notice (this is on my laptop) the keyboard layout by default is not anything like I have known in the past (I believe US keyboard layout is normally the default but this has things like shift+0 as =, what on the UK keyboard is / as -, the UK keyboard ? is ?, shift+7 gives /, and a number of symbols I don't even recognise appear on other keys). Hi, I tested a few antivirus engines in the last weeks and I wanted to summarize what I found out (all engines I tested could be used on a GRML live CD which is very cool) but it seems I cannot create pages in the wiki? So, I just post the stuff here: ===== Running antivirus software on GRML 2009.10 (Hello-Wien) ******************************************************* This is a list of antivirus software that has been tested to work or not work on GRML. Fortunately, all software I tested worked on GRML 2009.10 (which was quite different when I did this test a year ago). But of course that was not GRML's fault. ClamAV ------ Clamav has the advantage it is included in grml. Unfortunately as of writing this, the scan engine is not the latest one available. You can scan anyway, a few of the newest signatures will not work, though. Update command: freshclam scan command: clamscan /mnt/somewhere Avira ----- Avira is free for non-commercial use and a free 30-day trial is available for commercial use. Cannot add grub to new partition for grml.

I tried to install grml2hd and all worked fine until I tried to add grub to the /dev/sda16 partition and the grub install failed. Error was that I had to force the grub because it was a BAD idea to load grub that was not at the mbr???? . There is a grub-install with the grml64 live edition but it failed, too. Stephen J. Hi The guest additions and modules need to be installed on Windows 7. grml does not know that it is inside virtual box. I am not able to share-folder on host machine, a step before i am not able to install Guest-Addition on my guest-os, i click devices>install guest addition, nothing shows up. Some post said i need to install some kernel-patch in grml. anyone any idea. Hi, My current grml-rebuildfstab build entries in fstab using labels, like this: LABEL=TOOLS /mnt/TOOLS ... but I noticed that grml-rebuildfstab from grml64-medium_2009.10-rc1 behaves different. It buils fstab entries like, /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 Is this the intended behavior? Hi, wow I did not know I could read the linux cookbook online until I did a google search for it and found it online. But here's a problem I need to overcome, and if anyone has already overcome this being blind, can you share how you did it? Ok, so for me to practically use this cookbook, I will need to: *be able to somehow read the book and then go to my computer and follow the directions. so I would need two computers? one to read the book on, and another to have grml Linux on. or *have a braille copy of the Linux cookbook so I therefore only need one computer and can read the braille copy to refer back to. Hi, Sometimes we have ~4T storage and I want to boot from this GPT http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUID_Partition_Table The new grub should be able to handle this but I haven't seen a distribution which use it ;-( Maybe there is another bootloader for linux which is able to boot from such a disc? Hi, As always, the first thing I test on Grml 2009.10 is its frugal installation, using grml2usb. I found it still not applicable to me because I need to frugally install grml to a self-boot ext2/3 partition. grml2usb --grub fails because grub2 installation to PBR is still broken. http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/3293/screenshotgrub2pbrnok.png Using syslinux bootloader failed for me as well because syslinux refuses to work with ext2/3 partitions. http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/1411/screenshotsyslnok.png I guess that the new "dd-able ISO" feature does not apply to me as well since it requires FAT partitions as well, I believe. I guess the only option left for me is to install grub-legacy within the live system now. No complain. I guess not everyone is fond of grub as myself, and even fewer believe that "every OS on the disk trying to take over the MBR" is a bad idea... Well, grml2usb has improved a lot. GRML's udev and Debian's udev

Hello, I have been intending to ask this for sometime but never quite got round to it. On my GRML HD installation when I have been upgrading packages I keep getting a conflict involving udev. It seems to be that libgudev (probably is something to do with the gnome packages I have installed) depends on libudev0 >= 146 but GRML provides libudev0 0.141-1grml.04. This raises a few questions: * Would it be safe for me to upgrade to the Debian version of udev, I have held off as udev is quite core to the system and I don't want to really mess up my system. * Why does there seem to be a difference in the Debian package numbering and the GRML numbering (GRML seems to be providing 0.XXX where as Debian seems to have XXX, surely the versions don't differ as much as this suggests). * Would it be possible for GRML to provide a suitable updated udev package to match the Debian one? Hi, I remember long time ago there will be problem having /usr volume in a separated partition -- back to RedHat 6.0 days, when the system would not boot. I guess there won't be any problem any more nowadays, but just want to be sure, and know what factors should be considered when making the move. E.g., the last 2 parameters in /etc/fstab (dump & proc) should be 0 0, correct? How about if I make /usr a symlink to a folder on another volume? E.g., will normal package installation/removal be ok with a symlinked /usr? Easiest way to install Debian with grml-debootstrap

Hi. I've heard a lot about grml-debootstrap, GRML's debian installation script. I am assuming this does not install sid (but stable) Hear is what I was wondering. 1. What is the easiest way to get a debian installation going with it, (as I am no Debian exbert) and will be using the Speakup support in GRML) 2. Is it difficult to get the isntallation done? 3. How can I get a grml-kernel (because it includes speakup) downloaded into the new Debian isntallation, as the stock kernel will not talk out of the box. I could do the manual work of installing via git with linux.speakup.org, but would rather not. Thanks again, all! My final question: What happened to grml? development seems to be not happening, nothing was released in september, and now October is coming to a close. grml2hd on daily sid and squee

Hello, i want to install the daily build of grml sques install onto a partition of my asus eeepc 1005ha-m, so i downloaded the daily build of 4. october and put it onto a usb-stick. I start grml from the stick an start brltty and swspeak. I have edited the /etc/grml2hd/config for my needs and run grml2hd GRML2HD_NONINTERACTIVE=1 and/or GRML2HD_NONINTERACTIVE=1 grml2hd but that produces some errors in line 114 115 and some other lines unexpected .. Sorry, that i can not write teh whole errormessages here. What is the correct command for grml2hd to install noninteractive with edited config-file in /etc/grml2hd? Or is there an another error? Attatching the minicom output. It gets to a point where it "Write protecting the kernel read-only data: 1412k" and it stops. Any ideas? At the top of the minicom output are my grub boot loader setup.

Hi grml fraternity, I have used linux for almost 10 years, only used as a production system (distro-enthu), so not much of kernel stuff. A med-skilled developer with 4-5 yrs of exp in network programming. I have installed win7, with virtualbox in it. i need a linux, which is smallest in size, lightest in running, provided it provides best development tools for network programming and monitoring. I used grml couple of year ago at Politecnico Di Torino, for network security class (recommended by a prof), didnt use it after that, but i guess it serves a very good purpose of network development and network monitoring. Installing in Virtual Box. i am not able to install the grml-medium to my harddisk in virtualbox. when i enter grml2hd, after couple of disclaimers it says, no parition found. Has anyone installed grml to hdd in virtualbox. how do i go about it. any help and pointers. regards Vivek Sharma

So i upgrade my grml on my external usb-harddisk as follows: 1. strat grml 2. edit /etc/apt/sources-list and set the germl and debian to unstable 3. aptitude dist-upgrade 4. install the kernel 2.6.31-grml wth this modules as described in an earlier mail from mika 5. update-initramfs -c -t -k 2.6.31-grml 6 starting from dos with linld097 image=vml2631 initrd=i2631.gz "cl=root=/ dev/sda5 speakup.(or _)synth=apollo blind nodhpc vga=normal" But the system will not start. If i unpack the initrd-file, i did not found the speakup-modules. What must i do to become speakup to work with my apollo-synthesizer? Regards Dietmar

My DHCP client isn't started automatically anymore

Hi, since a safe-upgrade on 08.10.09, dhclient3 does not start automatically anymore. I use a router )Fritzbox), which is connected via USB to my machine. The hardware gets detected properly, and I have activated DHCP on the Fritzbox. The internal IP has not changed. Reconfiguring the network via grml-config results in turning on the client, but specifying the startup of dhclient at boot, fails. Although I answer this question with "yes", the client doesn't start with the boot procedure. The config script exits with code 1 shown at the prompt, but there are no error messages on the screen. The only thing that works is to include the networking script into the startup procedure by: update-rc.d networking defaults This was not necessary before. The client's binary has the date of 05.10.09, although the problems came up yesterday. Boot loaders

Hello, In the past I have always used lilo for my boot loader, partly due to lilo being the first boot loader I learnt and so never really gave much time to learn grub and partly due to having knowledge on how to get the boot loader screen of lilo to beep when it appears (information on the GRML wiki about accessibility). Last night I came across one of the problems with lilo and I believe grub might be able to solve this. The problem was that the GRML kernel I am running (2.6.31-grml) was updated by apt in an upgrade. I forgot to run lilo before rebooting and so my system became impossible to boot from the HD. At some point in the past my BIOS settings had been lost and so my CD drive is now on a lower priority than the HD for booting (not being able to see, I can't use the BIOS by myself to correct the BIOS boot order, so I had no way to correct the problem). I believe grub allows the user to enter a command at the boot screen and so boot any device (not quite sure where I have seen this but I think it may even have been here). My questions: 1. Am I right about grub being able to accept commands at the boot screen allowing booting of anything (even if it isn't in the menu list)? 2. Is it possible to get the grub boot screen to beep like the lilo one as described in the accessibility information on the GRML wiki? 3. Have you got any extra reasons you would suggest changing to grub from lilo or is there a different boot manager you would suggest? Michael Whapples

Hi pals, I have just installed grml_2009.05 on vmware on macosx. Yeah, it's awesome as always. Thanks so much, the grml team. You just make me addicted to grml already. I have one problem (or it may not be a problem) with rxvt. I grml-x wmii. I then "alt+p => rxvt". I get a weird rxvt (for me). It opens up an rxvt with some tab/menu on the top most of rxvt window. It runs in as if it is in a floating window although my wmii should make it in a tiled way. I can't even make it active on rxvt window which simply means I can't use it. Is there anything wrong? Hello Mika, i have spend a lot of time, but it will not work for me to upgrade from 2.6.23-grml to 2.6.28-grml. So another question. I want to use my installed grml on a asus eepc 1005ha-m. I have search via google and found some hints to use kernels greater 2.6.30. which of the daily builds will use such an kernel and can i upgrade the distro via changing the settings in /etc/apt/source-list and a aptitude dist-upgrade ???? Hello Mika, thanks for your answer. I have done a update-iniramfs -c -t -k 2.6.28-grml After that i started the kernel with this initrd from dos (i allways start from dos with linld097.com. The kernel loads and stand than in the initramfs. I did not hear any output from my apollo synthesizer (boot-option speakup_synth=apollo). I have unpacked the initrd.img-2.6.28-grml and looked for the speakup- modules, but he modules are not in the initrd.img-2.6.28-grml. On the system the modules are in /lib/modules/2.6.28-grml/extra/speakup/ How can i add this modules? Unpacking with gzip -dc initrd.img-2.6.28-grml | cpio -i copy the extra folder into the 2.6.28-grml directory and then find . | cpio -o -H newc | gzip -9 >initrd.img-2.6.28-grml will produce a new initrd, but speakup will not work and the system will not boot. How can i do a depmode for the not running kernel 2.6.28-grml? thanks for your help. Regards Dietmar

Hello, i use the 2.6.23-grml-kernel on my system. I want to upgrade the kernel to version 2.6.28-grml. If i do: aptitude install linux-image-2.6.28-grml only this package will be downloaded and installed, but no drivers from grml. Hello all: How can I boot a GRML installation from the Live CD? I have a GRML installation on the 3rd partition. When running from the Live CD the partition is identified as /dev/sda3. I did not want to install the boot loader to the MBR of /dev/sda so I installed LILO to /dev/sda3.

No Does the sound work? Yes, the speaker-test works. Does pressing the volume hotkeys raise, lower and mute volume? Yes for raise, lower volume -- there is dialog appearing on screen showing the current volume. But mute doesn't work. Does pressing the sleep button cause the machine to sleep? No Is CPU frequency scaling supported? No sudo invoke-rc.d powernowd start shows the error required sysfs object not found. ............................................................................ The most important thing to note is that, all above things don't work under Grml Medium works fine out of box in Unbunto. Most of them are fundamental features, IMHO. Hi, when I shut down/reboot my system, I get a core file written in /. Since this is happening repeatedly, there is a pretty large amount of drive space wasted. Can anyone confirm/reproduce this behavior, and does anybody know what causes this? How can I stop this? Hermann --

Having a way to set default X session manager

Hello, Currently when GRML is installed to HD it creates the user home directory with a .xinitrc file with a window manager (looking closer at alternatives it seems this really should be called x session manager). This makes it impossible for a system wide default window manager to be set. I remember that slackware offered a feature where a default system window manager could be set and such a feature would be useful in GRML. Obviously should a user want to use something other than the default then they can do so by running grml-x or manually create the ~/.xinitrc file. Would it be possible to add such a feature? Hello grml users! You are probably aware of the fact that grml ships a pretty big zsh setup. It is quite likely, though, that nobody - including us developers - knows every function, keybinding or feature the setup implements. That's why a manpage was started for it in order to create a reference manual about the setup. A reference card for the zshrc exists already, but that is rather brief due to... well being a reference card. The basic skeleton for the manpage is ready. I described a few features and began a reference section. However. Writing a complete reference for our setup is a big and tedious task. I personally don't use the setup myself, which doesn't exactly help matters either... And there are still numerous functions, aliases, variables and options, that need to be documented. So, to cut a long story short: Help!1!! :-) No, seriously. If you are interested in helping writing that manual, please contact us at: grml-etc-core(a)grml.org ...so we can coordinate the work (and possibly avoid doubled work if a lot of people are willing to help). Every little bit would help, so don't be shy. :) In order to get a local version of the repository that keeps track of the manual do this: % git clone git://git.grml.org/grml-etc-core.git % cd grml-etc-core % git co -b zshrc5 origin/ft/zshrc5 % cd doc After that you'll see a file called grmlzshrc.t2t which is the markup source of the manpage. The markup language used is txt2tags and the needed package is just one 'aptitude install txt2tags' away. It's a pretty minimal language, that is quite easy to use - the existing content will give you a very good idea of how to achieve different things using txt2tags. To generate roff (the man-format in a .5 file) and html versions of the manual (to see what your changes look like) just run 'make' in the doc subdirectory. If you can spare a few minutes of your time to contribute, please send us a message to the aforementioned address and we'll see how to go on from there. grml install on SD card

Hy, I want to do the HDInstall to a SD Card wich is inserted in a eeePC901 SD-Card Slot. When I boot up from an USB-Stick with the grml Live-Image and choose HDInstall all seems to be Ok. But after reboot grml always failed to load (no OS found). I also tryed to install the bootmanager into partition /dev/sdd1 and MBR of /dev/sdd but no effekt. The internal SSD I do not want to have edited with the bootmanager. If I look on the SD-Card there seem to be all files. Is there a way that this could run? best regards Henrik

Hi! I wonder about the hardware requirements for grml and couldn't find anything in the wiki and in the mailinglist-archive so far. The reason why I am wondering is, because I have a very old laptop (IBM Thinkpad 600E, Mobile Pention II, 228 MB RAM) on which I tride to run the live CD and failed so far. There is always the same error: IO APIC resources could not be allocated. RAMDISK: incomplete write (-28 != 32768) 4194304 invalid compressed format (err=1) Kernel panic- not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(253,0 Other live CDs work, though: Knoppix 3.7 (*not* 3.8), Sidux Chaos (dated February 2007) and even Ubuntu 9.4 Desktop. Any idea if I could make it work and how? On my more recent Ideapad S10e it boots perfectly but it seems that the built-in WLAN is not recognized (the Windows device manager says it is a Broadcom Device, I'll try to find out more) Regards, Jutta

Hello, Hallo, i need some help. I have delete a directory of my /home directory with a lot of data. Einfacher ist es für mich in deutsch zu beschreiben, was passiert ist, Sorry. Meine grml-Installation ließ sich booten, beim Booten wurde mit einer Fehlermeldung, dass der Superblock fehle, eine maintenance-shell gestartet. Da ich in einem /home Verzeichnis wichtige Daten hatte, habe ich den Rechner runtergefahren und grml vom usb-stick gestartet und die Partition /dev/hdb7 (auf der das grml installiert ist) gemontet. Warum auch immer, ich habe nach dem Mounten das Verzeichnis /home/volksbank gelöscht, anstatt es zu kopieren und zu sichern. Die Partition /dev/hdb7 habe ich seitdem nicht mehr benutzt, keine Daten darauf geschrieben, bzw. das grml-System von dieser Partition gestartet. Wie kann ich das Verzeichnis /vhome/volksbank und dessen Unterverzeichnisse und Dateien wiederherstellen? Ich bin mir nicht sicher ob ich die Partition /dev/hdb7 als ext2 formatiert habe, wie kann ich das herausfinden? Vielen Dank für Eure Hilfe und das Verständnis, dass ich hier mein Problem in deutsch beschrieben habe. MFG Dietmar Segbert

Hi, this is what I recently filed in the BTS as issue715, and mika said that it may be a good idea to discuss my suggestion here as well. The interaction between GRMLCFG, myconfig, scripts, debs and config is incredibly byzantine to me. It has clearly grown, but I'd like to have some more features which would be available by a re-work of the semantics. I would like to see the following behavior implemented: - debs, config and scripts are always searched and read from the same place ($dcs-dir). Which place this is varies, depending on GRMLCFG, noautoconfig and myconfig. - debs are searched in $dcs-dir/debs. If debs=foo is given, foo is taken as a shell wildcard for the debs being installed, paths are allowed and relative to $dcs-dir. - config archives (config.tbz) are searched directly in $dcs-dir. If config=foo is given and foo is a file, that file is unpacked and its content taken as configuration archive. If config=foo is given and foo is a directory, the contents of the directory tree is copied over the live CD configuration. paths are allowed and relative to $dcs-dir - scripts are searched in $dcs-dir/scripts. If scripts=foo is given and foo is a file, that file is executed. If scripts=foo is given and foo is a directory, all files inside that directory are executed. Paths are allowed and relative to $dcs-dir. - If no GRMLCFG partition is found and noautoconfig is _not_ given on the command line, nothing is changed and the dcs files are searched within the .iso, $dcs-dir is set to the root directory within the .iso - If a GRMLCFG partition is found, $dcs-dir is set to the root of the GRMLCFG partition unless noautoconfig is set. If noautoconfig is set, $dcs-dir is set to the root directory within the .iso. - If myconfig=foo is set on the command line, $dcs-dir is set to foo, even if a GRMLCFG partition is present. I tried to craft this new behavior not to break mainstream configurations while some more exotic schemes now need different handling. It also has the advantage of having similiar definitions for scrips, debs and config which will probably allow some code to be re-used for all three cases. Please indicate whether you find this behavior acceptable and desireable. If this new behavior would break a setup you use, please say so as well. I believe this new behavior can be implemented alone by changing /etc/init.d/grml-autoconfig and/or /etc/grml/autoconfig.functions. Hi Mika, Just out of curiosity, how do you compare Terminal Server and PXE? I knew the term "Terminal Server" when I knew grml, and only within the grml community. The outside world seems to be interested in PXE instead. So I like to know the reason behind why grml chose Terminal Server over PXE. Here are the homeworks I've done: The only "Terminal Server" I found on the web seems to related with KNOPPIX http://knoppix.manty.net/ http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/KNOPPIX_Terminal_Server But the original author of the wiki document, Rjent, has moved his efforts to working on something else. installing grml onto hard drive

Hello, I am just getting started with grml as of today. I am blind, and would like to install grml onto my hard drive. I downloaded the latest iso image: grml_2009.05.iso After looking at teh menu.lst file, it looks like I need to specify that I use teh grml-hd menu option, but I need to add the brltty and ppossibly speakup parameters to teh kernel, and I am not quite sure how to do that. My second alternative would be to install grml from teh running liveCD once I get brltty and speakup running successfully. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

However, I found that you've mixed the two cases. The wiki should read: To use the persistency feature you need * either a writeable partition with label 'live-rw' * or execute the command 'live-snapshot' then follow the instructions. I.e., both method can get you the persistent feature, but either one is enough. you don't need both. Speeding up udev?

Hi, in former mails I reported a slow boot procedure of GRML, and I couldn't figure out the reason why. In the meantime I found out that udev seems to slow down the whole thing. Deactivating it seems no good solution, since there is hardly any hardware detected; only the internal drives are recognized. But no sound, no network etc. So is there a chance to speed up udev? I didn't find anything in the manual that refers to "speeding up the procedure". Any hints? Hermann --

GRML and debian unstable?

Hello, There's one thing which has slightly puzzled me about GRML, why does it use debian unstable? I can imagine stable is not wanted as it can get quite out dated due to the time between debian stable releases, but why not testing? Why this puzzles me is that due to it using debian unstable problems can occur with package conflicts, broken packages, etc, so leading to it really not being good for those unfamiliar with linux and debian package management. However there are parts of GRML which I feel are good for useability, eg. some of the scripts for configuring the system, like grml-network which is probably the simplest way of configuring a network interface I have found for a text console. Also as a blind user the in built accessibility is something which makes it good for me (some other distros either didn't have any accessibility for the install process, required a separate modified CD (eg. fedora) or in the case of slackware which while providing the accessibility only could use a hardware speech synthesiser for the install). This meant if anyone asked about an accessible install then GRML was good from that angle. However things are changing, vinux has moved towards being debian based and may be now would be my suggestion for a first time users distro with accessibility. Michael Whapples

grml_2009.05.iso and swspeak

I have been trying to install grml_2009.05.iso on a Dell Enspiron laptop from the 2002 era. This computer does work as it does have the last edition of oralux on it with speakup. The speech and Ethernet functions work fine but such things as sound recording and serial communications do not work so I have been hoping that a newer distribution would bring more systems to life. I downloaded grml_2009.05.iso and did the following: Boot the CDROM and wait for things to settle down. type swspeak=espeak and hit Enter. Nothing. I had a sighted person watch and the first thing to hit the screen is a picture of a keyboard and the boot prompt. If I then type swspeak=espeak or swspeak=speechd, the screen goes black and the CDROM drive runs for a few more seconds and then nothing. Am I forgetting something, possibly an en cantation over a frog killed in the first quarter of the Moon or what? I even downloaded the medium image and tried it with the same results. Does the medium ISO image contain any software speech? I did get a 2-year-old grml live CD to talk, but it began spelling any time one tried to go in to the installation routine so so much for that. Any other suggestions as to what to try or do I have some part of the procedure wrong? Many thanks. Hi mika, Would you please write something about Kvm? Searching the keyword Kvm didn't result good hist in mlist archive and wiki. I use to test new grml releases with VMware (the thing I hate most is to reboot my box just for the testing), but installing VMware into the newly installed grml every time has been a pain. I like to streamline the testing/using grml with kvm if possible. So I want to know how to install/config kvm, and test new grml releases with it. Hello, I noticed that in grml2hd when it prompts you for which boot parameters should be used for the append line it gives the speakup one as speakup_synth although now grml uses speakup.synth, therefore users can't add speakup.synth to an installed system through the interface, they have to do it manually using the boot loader. I noticed this when using a grml 2009.05RC2 CD (I know that grml 2009.05 has been released but I had the rc2 CD to hand when I needed to perform the install and I have just updated grml2hd on my system and examined the source code and this bug seems to still be present). vol boot option overridden by any boot option which implies sound

Hello, I noticed that when I use boot options which imply sound as they give speech messages in the boot process (eg. swspeak, brltty, etc) then the vol option for setting volume level doesn't work (IE. volume always ends up being 90%). This is a problem when using a system with no physical volume control (eg. a laptop using internal speakers). This is using the grml 2009.05 CD. Michael Whapples

Bug with setting passwords when installing using grml2hd and grml-debootstrap

Hello, I noticed that yesterday when I did an install of debian using grml-debootstrap it seemed to fail to set the password of the root account, it seemed to just print out the help message of the chpasswd command. This was using grml installed on a USB drive using grml2usb and the ISO image of grml 2009.05. I also encountered the same when I did the grml2hd installation using the RC2 CD. The only way I was able to log in to the installed system was to boot grml again, mount the drive where I had done the installation and remove the x from the password field of the /etc/passwd file and then reboot back to the HD installation and log in without a password and then set a new password (there may be another way but this is the one I am certain of). This seems like a critical bug to me as by default it seems grml2hd and grml-debootstrap leave the installed system unuseable. Michael Whapples

Extraction of the small and medium flavors from the full one.

Hi, now that the grml2iso from git is working, I was wondering is there's some way to create the small and medium images from the full one. For example, if I want to create a DVD with grml, grml-medium and grml-small on it, I'll have to download the 3 flavors even when the grml one also contains (in some way) the other two. So, if we have some way to extract the small and medium flavor from the full one, we could save some bandwidth from the mirrors. I guess that the other option is to create the images using grml-live with a local mirror so the packages are only downloaded once. Another option could be to create differential squashfs from small to medium and from medium to full, and place the three squashfs on the full CD so when you chose full for example, the system will mount the three squashfs together using unionfs to create the full version. I don't know if it's possible or if you can understand what I trying to explain, but I think could be an interesting idea. Anyway, we should also consider the performance issue of stacking several squashfs with unionfs. Greetings. Ernesto

Creating a bootable DVD using grml and grml64

Hi, I'd like to create a bootable DVD from the ISOs of grml and grml64 so I can boot whichever of the two flavors or even aggregate the rest of the ISOs to the DVD (small and medium for i585 and amd64). I tried to use grml2usb doing this: 1) dd if=/dev/zero of=dvd.iso bs=1M count=2000 2) losetup /dev/loop1 dvd.iso 3) echo -en "n\np\n1\n\n\nt\n6\na\n1\n w\n" | fdisk /dev/loop1 4) mkfs.vfat /dev/loop1 5) grml2usb grml_2009.05.iso grml64_2009.05.iso /dev/loop1 But it didn't work. There's seems to be some problem when installing the bootloader. What did you think?, Is it possible to do what I want?, should I use grml-live to create custom ISOs?. I would agree. As far as I know for self voicing emacs there's either emacspeak which requires either a hardware synth or viavoice which is commercial, or speechd-el which can use speech-dispatcher, so speechd-el and speech-dispatcher seems to be the best free solution for software self voicing of emacs. In most other cases (eg. you mention brltty) there are alternatives (eg. brltty I thought can use espeak directly). I would like to accept speech-dispatcher as the obvious choice for speech output but unfortunately its problem with crashing from time to time (I think it was you Hermann who said it has something to do with its ALSA support) makes me personally want to back away from it. Although I have my personal feelings on speech-dispatcher I accept there are reasons to use it so would say it should stay if possible. I got Espeakup finally to work

Hi, just let you know: Espeakup now works in German. I had to pull the latest from GIT, and after compiling I had to type: espeakup -V de or espeakup --default-voice=de Note: You can replace that "de" by any non-English voice. I got the tip from the Speakup list archive. Question: Is it possible to replace the 0.4 by the latest version (0.60)? Second note: the modified characters file is still needed. Hermann --

The installed GRML boots very slow

My hard drive start spinning and then stops for a long time till it starts moving again. I guess that in the meantime there runs the hardware detection. But why lasts this procedure so long? hi, i have installed the latest grml (schluchtenscheisser). everything was working out of the box and i upgraded (aptitude safe-upgrade) to the latest packages. after a reboot everything was working. after another reboot udev doesn't work anymore (it hangs at populating /dev) and i have to boot with 'noudev' to get it to start. but now i can't access any device like the nw-card, or usb-stick anymore. does anyone know about that problem and how to fix it ? thx, markus.

Why does GRML mix up the stable and teh unstable branche in apt?

Hi, a few weeks ago, I installed Gnome on my GRML 2008-11. Since Gnome shipps a lot of updates, I got a lot of stuff from the unstable branche of the repo. This results in screwing up my system, especially Gnome. So I commented out the unstable branche and removed comment chars from the testing branche; the stability was much better. But due to the lack of performance I finally got rid of Gnome. But the question stays: Why is stable and unstable mixed up on GRML, instead of including the testing branche? With one exception, this mixing caused no problem on the text console. Hermann --

Speakup and non-ascii characters

Hello, This is in response to an email by Hermann, I am not doing it as a reply as I get messages as a digest and lost the original message. First thing to note is that speakup as far as I know has its own character table which it uses for pronouncing characters when saying individual characters (eg. spelling, cursoring over characters, etc). This table can be found in /sys/modules/speakup/parameters/characters and so can be edited there. Speakup by default lists characters up to value 255, although values beyond 127 depend on the encoding used (eg. latin1, utf-8, etc) for the actual definition. As far as I know espeakup doesn't modify this table, speechd-up can replace the tables or leave them alone (there is an option for speechd-up to specify this). One way to fix this is to create a script to modify the table or copy a new table into /sys/modules/speakup/parameters/characters and to do this on start up. Does this help? Michael Whapples

GRML does not boot on all machines since version 2008-11

Hi, since version 2008-11 I cannot boot the live CD anymore on one of my machines - my desktop computer - a PC bought at the German computer store Vobis. They use noname components, but the computer contains an AMD Duron processor of 1 Ghz and has 256 MB RAM. All former GRML-Versions, including the 2008-11 release candidate did boot well. On my notebook - Acer 1600, Intel processor 2,7 Ghz, 512 MB RAM, I can boot every GRML CD. After taking a long time, the CD seems to hang, and because I'm blind, I cannot check out what is written on the screen. Is there a way to redirect the output, for example to a file on a floppy drive? And, most important, waht is the reason for this? I use the GRML CDs to backup and restore my systems via partimage. Any hints? Hermann --

Speakup doesn't speak German correctly and is only partial usable

Hi, perhaps this is better written to the Speakup list, but I'll try to put this here: When using Speakup together with Espeak either via Speech-dispatcher with speechd-up, or together with Espeakup, The speech does not recognize all characters correctly: Most annoying are the German umlauts, which are not recognized at all by Espeakup and only partially by speechd-up. In the latter case I can hear them when typing and continuously reading, but they are pronounced wrong when deleting them and when moving char by char via the cursor-left-right keys. For Example: "ü" is "power" and "ä" is "sigma". Moreover: An "a" is spelled as "aik", and all punctuation chars and numbers are in English. Most unusable is Espeakup, where it is impossible to read a German text. What is the experience of other non-English Speakup users? Note: It is not an Espeak problem, because when I use it with Speech-dispatcher and the speech functions, provided by the screen readers Brltty and Suse-Blinux, they work well. Hermann --
