Hi I read somewhere that DSL (Dam Small Linux) is removing the bitmap fonts entirely from the system. Since so many high quality TrueType fonts are available, it is a waste of space to still have bitmap fonts. Is this on the todo list of grml as well? thanks

ATI proprietary driver fglrx and Xvideo support

Hi, I'm using the fglrx driver for my ATI card. Does it has Xvideo support? When I tried with mplayer -vo xv moviefile I get: ----------------------- It seems there is no Xvideo support for your video card available. dear m and friends, just for fun, i tried the rc on an older pc without the need for wireless card. grml-x issue - no screen found now, if I copy the xorg.conf that I always use for that machine, then issue grml-x fluxbox, it is gorgeous, screen, colous, resolution. grml on a pendrive

I and a friend are trying to use the grml harddrive install to put it on a 4gb pendrive. Seem to have problems though, almost seems like scsi errors, I couldn't see the screen and we didn't run grml with voice so i'd have to try again to get error messoges; but basically just treated the pendrive like a harddrive. Has anyone gotten this to work? Is anyone else having an issue with ndiswrapper? I have rechecked on live cd of 0.7: nano /etc/network/interfaces "iface wlan0 inet dhcp" then ndiswrapper -i /path/to/driver modprobe ndiswrapper (green wireless light illuminates in 0.7, not in 0.8) iwconfig wlan0 blah blah ifup wlan0 works fine in 0.7 does nothing at all in 0.8 Is this another udev issue, or am I stupidly missing something new I should know? new kernel to get new ati driver

Dear M and Friends, One of the few weak spots in grml was the lack of ability to install the latest ati drivers as they came out. How safe is it to apt get the new grml kernel and fglrx driver, to wit, since I must have the ndiswrapper work, will module assistant be able to make sure that the ndiswrapper works with the new kernel, so I have the pleasure of being able to connect to the internet and plage you with ignorant questions? I would still love dearly to be able to install and run a custom kernel, as the boot up time here is still longer than it need be, and I suspect there might be some gains in speed to be had throughout. If I were to wait for grml 8, due out, I presume, soon, will the kernel recompile be straightforward, as in debian, and the modules all work without a hitch? Will there be a way to apt install all the grml patches? I know you need noobs like a case of diptheria, but I appreciate the help. Best, Martin

Hi My CD accessing speed is extremely slow. For "cdrdao read-cd", which normally takes 5~6min, takes 5 times as long: real 24m54.889s user 0m0.004s sys 0m0.016s For "vcdxrip", which normally takes same as "cdrdao read-cd", 5~6min, literely takes forever: #extract[avseq01.mpg]: 148720/354829 (42%) ^C real 83m17.571s user 0m0.000s sys 0m0.012s Everything has been fine in Debian Sarge. What could be wrong? PS. I've turned dma on for my CD: % hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc /dev/hdc: setting using_dma to 1 (on) using_dma = 1 (on) please help thanks

Hi, I would like to boot grml_small from CF (via IDE-CF-adapter). According to the FAQ, this should be a piece of cake. I mkfs'ed the filesystem to ext2, put the iso image on the CF and had a go at it. However, all I get is the complaint "Missing Operating System". How can I fix that? lucidasans fonts

Hi I love to use the lucidasans fonts. But I've just noticed that I don't have lucidasans fonts in grml. Checking with xlsfonts | grep -i lucidasan all I got are w-lucidasans-* fonts. I looked further into it grep lucidasan /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/fonts.alias tells me that those fonts are from 75dpi x-fonts, but I've got the xfonts-75dpi fonts intstalled? ii xfonts-75dpi 75 dpi fonts for X ii xfonts-bolkhov-cp1251-75dpi 75 dpi CP1251 encoded Cyrillic fonts for X (Cyr-RFX collection) why I don't have the lucidasans fonts? please help. thanks

changing IP

After installing GRML 2 HD, grml gets it's IP-Adress via IP. I changed this setting via "netcardconfig" to a fixed IP, this change seems to be recorded, the ip is changed immediately. After rebooting the system gets the old DHCP-IP again. How do I change the IP to a permanently fixed IP? thomas

Strange default xterm setting

Hi I have the following menu entries in my fluxbox menu: [exec] (Top) {xterm -e top} [exec] (Run) {fbrun} What's strange is that when I choose the "Top" menu entry, the content of top will build up in xterm -- new content shows up below the old one, instead of overwriting them. The same things happens when I tried to "Run" the "xterm -e top" (with the "Run" menu entry) If I launch an xterm, weather via command line or the "Run" menu entry, and issue the top command there, the display is normal -- new content overwriting the old one. I think the reason might be because of the default grml xterm setting, which is resetted by my .profile once the xterm is launched normally. Please comment. thanks

The venerable exists in the Linux kernel 2.6.13 up to versions before 2.6.17.4, and 2.6.16 before 2.6.16.24, both of which were released on 2006-07-06. Hi Anybody has successfully installed vmware under grml hd installation? I bumped into the following 2 problems: - vmware-install.pl asks for the rc?.d directories: What is the directory that contains the init directories (rc0.d/ to rc6.d/)? - vmware-config.pl asks for kernel header files The 2nd is the one that stops me. I have linux-kernel-headers-grml installed, but that alone did not work. So I went ahead and installed linux-headers-2.6.16-2 linux-headers-2.6.16-2-686, but I was stopped by the following: The directory of kernel headers (version 2.6.16-2-686) does not match your running kernel (version 2.6.16-grml). Even if the module were to compile successfully, it would not load into the running kernel. It went back to ask me for kernel header files. Please help thanks

Configuring Xterm logs

Hi, I noticed lots of files like Xterm.log.grml.2006.07.09.22.26.11.3824 in my home directory. How can I turn of Xterm logs by default? Is there anyway to turn on/off the logging without using the menu? My Xterm's menu pop-up screen are unreasonably small. It's about 2 lines by 10 columns. The dimension is the same despite the window manager that I'm using (Pekwm/fluxbox). Does it happen to you too?

Hi First of all, let me confess the hidden agenda for me to install grml -- to tap into the unbelievable knowledge base of grml users and admin, because I had been trying to setup my Postfix to relay my mails through my ISP with SASL required many times but all failed. Hi Several suggestions regarding the grml2hd: - I noticed that not all questions asked are in the config file. hostname is one of the example. - How about able to configure default language and time zone? - It might be a good idea to allow user to specify their own config files, but partition and mbr are still passed from the command line. So, eg, the config file can be provided from floppy, the same setting (from floppy) can be re-used over and over again. just my 2c thanks

ReadOnly Filesystem after upgrade

Ahoi there, I use the GRML HD installed version on my laptop (X20); I ran an apt-get upgrade yesterday (monday), which seemed to work alright, but when I rebooted the system later on, the root filesystem is only mounted readonly, and systems like the /prov directory aren't hooked up (the runlevel says "2"). Mounting /proc and remounting rw works, but I can't seem to get the system to hold on to those settings (/etc/fstab has / with "default" options etc). I also ran fsck twice, but nothing seems to be wrong. Can't really give any more information, but here the last few lines of dmesg: md: Autodetecting RAID arrays. md: autorun ... md: ... autorun DONE. EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly. Freeing unused kernel memory: 280k freed kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds device-mapper: dm-multipath version 1.0.4 loaded I wonder if the RAID system (md...) could be causing problems (I didn't set up anything RAID related). Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong? Were there some bad package in yesterdays upgrades? Thanks, murphee

Hi I need the ATI-drivers to start x (otherwise, grml-x will hang). but as of today, the fglrx-driver in the grml repository has a open bug -- no console after logging out of X, ver 8.25.18-1. Is there any workarounds? thanks

You can also boot grml_iso from HD without grml_CD. Condition: you must have a linux partition with grub as linux loader on your HD. Here is a way to do so: 1-copy grml_iso to a partition on HD: (hda5 as example). grml tohd=/dev/hda5 2-reboot to your linux box.(my / is on /dev/hda5). 3-create grml directory in /boot of your linux partition : as root mkdir /boot/grml 4-copy the files "linux26" and "minirt26.gz" from grml_CD/boot/isolinux to /boot/grml 5-edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to add entry for grml. here is as example the entry of grml in my /boot/grub/menu.lst # this entry boot grml from iso_image on /dev/hda5 title Grml root (hd0,4) kernel /boot/grml/linux26 fromhd=/dev/hda5 lang=fr vga=797 ramdisk=100000 initrd /boot/grml/minirt26.gz 6-it's all. reboot and pick Grml at grub menu. Trying grml2hd with qemu

Hi Is it possible to try out grml2hd with qemu? I tried with: qemu -boot d -cdrom grml_0.7.iso -hda grml.img & but after 'grml2hd /dev/hda', it stops at the "making ext3 filesystem on /dev/hda". half hours later no progress. Can somebody investe in it please? thanks tong

Grml philosophy

Hi there, I'm always interested in pure Debian based Live-CDs. I was half way building my own read-only root fs, when I noticed grml. I wish I had known it earlier. I have to say grml is exactly the type of Live distro that I've been looking for for a long long time. Browsing through the web site, I know it has got lots of publicity in the German speaking world. But I think it lacks the equivalent publicity in the English speaking world. In summary, such nice distro deserved to have more people to know and use... Ok, here are my questions. I'd like to know the philosophy behind the grml releases. I used to use Debian testing, but recently revert to stable because the vulnerability of Debian testing. So you know I'm always on the cautions side. I know Knopsis, Ubunto does a lot of QA testing before the release. How about grml? Seems to me that grml pick its release packages only based on the cut off date. How about the problems/errors that inherited from the packages of the cut off date? Can't imaging so many tools will have one perfect day to be error free. Do you revert several versions back on those packages that have problems? In short, Debian unstable always has the potential to be unstable. What's the mechanism in place for grml to avoid it? thanks tong

too many running services at boot up

Dear Friends, I admit that you probably do not consider grml the perfect noobie distro, but, since everything works perfectly with no hassles whatsoever, you are going to find yourselves contending with more and more of us. The only thing I wish to change at all, but cannot quite figure out how to do easily is get rid of all the stuff that laptop users hate on boot-up. Yes, I know I could try manually editing the conf files, but am not sure how. Is there a sage way, since the KDE gui does not work, to get rid of stuff like cron, roxen, and so on that are useless and time consuming for lappy users who reboot tonnes of times per diem? Or can one point KsysV to the correct file? There appear to be at least four files in /etc which might be the ones that need be edited, but I am in over my head. Interestingly, install on a sata/atapi machine with a pcie ati video card was a breeze, up and running in less than half an hour, and much, much nicer than the thousand and one debian workarounds, or some of the genuinely eccentric Kanotix "improvements". Anyway, if there is a way simply to comment out the stuff I do not need, I am happy to do that. Very best wishes, Martin

Read-only root fs

Hi there. My 4th post here. My questions are: - 1st, does grml support read-only root fs? If not please put it into todo list. Since it is a Live distro, supporting read-only root fs should be trivial, but I need it badly. I have reiserfs for my root fs, but still that can't sustain the frequent power failure that I'm having. - 2nd, an OT question. Does Debian or grml support some kind of integrity test? My current situation is that after so many damn power failures, my lovely Debian is in an unstable stage, commands that used to work are now failing mystically. Re-install the packages that contain those tools won't help. I'm now forced to do a reinstallation after having my ever-upgrading-and-customizing Debian for so many years... I wish Debian or grml has the integrity testing capability that rpm has, ie. to test whether the libs/executables that reside on the disk are still the same as in the package. This might help for situations like what I'm experiencing, or HD failure, and potential compromised systems... thanks

I tried grml2hd, told it to install to /dev/hdc2, expecting it to notice it didn't have enough space, and it did notice. I thought it would then ask me if I had any other partitions I wanted to add. It didn't. It wrote it all to hdc2, ran out of space, and reported the installation was successful. Back to the drawing board. Can I edit /etc/grml2hd/config and stuff mount commands in the PREwhatever function there? Where should they be mounted? Is that config file read and used _anytime_ grml2hd is run or only on automatic runs? I hope to have: / /dev/hdc2 /home /dev/hdc3 /usr /dev/hdc6 /var /dev/hdc5 swap /dev/hda7 swap /dev/hdc1 I've already created the partitions and made filesystems on them. I just need them to be there when the installer goes to write the system. Afterwards, I can reboot the CD, mount / somewhere, tweak fstab, and I should be good to go from the installed grml. Anyone ever tried this? If this is currently not possible, I suppose it falls into the wishlist bucket. -- Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced. grml boot test report. :-)

Hi. While playing with mozilla-mplayer this morning (still trying to find some way to get FIFA videos playing on my box ... Long story), it locked up the video card hard. Couldn't even get to a text console. Great! Time to test out grml. :-) Hardware is a Compaq Deskpro PIII-733, 0.5 Gb RAM, 10 Gb HD on /dev/hda, 2 Gb HD on /dev/hdc, 52x32x52 CD-RW on /dev/hdd. Video is on-board i810 with 4 Mb RAM. grml's lovely, or what I saw of it is. Nothing I did would go anywhere near a framebuffer console. "grml-info" replies: Could not initialize graphics driver fb: Cannot open /dev/fb0. "fbset 1024x768-70" replies: open /dev/fb0: no such file or directory I tried boot options grml lapic vga=791 vga=normal vga=ask fb1024x768 and no joy. Surely I'll find a simple answer in the FAQ, I know. Other things to note include: - on the F9 boot prompt page: "Notice: you this bootoption with care!" s/you/use/ - dmesg reports: VFS: can't find an ext2 filesystem on /dev/hda which is a little odd as I'm using it to type this. :-) After fiddling with grml a bit, I also tried the new gparted-livecd-0.2.5-1.iso I downloaded recently. It found all my ptns on both disks. So, now I'll head off to grml.org and see what the FAQ has to say, but nice job grml guys! I'm looking forward to my next reboot to play with it some more. hd-install and KDE desktop?

I have grml-0.7 system installed on my home PC. I tried to apt-get install kde which did installed except for some warnings about libc-2.3.6 etc. When the deskstop is started using startkde, it just hangs and the machine has to be rebooted. Any ideas? -ishwar

Dear Friends, Is there some reason other than my own stupidity that this charset is not available to me? I am now using grml on my mission critical machines daily, and the only real drawbacks are: 1. not all auto-installers, such as hsfmodem drivers or ati installer work with grml, although they do with debian sid. Naturally, I have done the thing with the tip from the wiki, but we should be able to build kernels, modules, use off the 'net installers same as debian. Funny enough, when one uses, for example, the .deb from the linuxant site, rather than run the script, it installs perfectly, even writing correctly to the runlevel.conf file. So it may have to do with permissions somewhere, or something in the makefiles that is way beyond me. (Yes, I know grml is not for noobs like me, but it is still the easiest and best distro out there - which should alarm us more than it does, I suppose) 2. the kde desktop(which is a big step for me from ICEWM) does not handle all fonts and languages that I am used to in libranet /debian, where eveything seems just to work. SImply put, if if it is a font or charset, I need it, and it needs to work first time everytime. It took an hour to get ipa working in the two or three fonts it works in, and one still cannot copy tipa from the gucharmap or kcharselector into openoffice documents. Can we, as a quick fix, therefore, find a way to make jp iso 2022(or for that matter, all available locales) available to the kde desktop easily? It is not even listed in "dpkg-reconfigure locales." Also, one last request: I keep a somewhat accurate collection of the mailing list, but gmane drops things very quickly from their server, so is there a way for us to access the entire set of posts ab initio? Booting an ISO image

I am playing with a new laptop, and before touching its partitions I wanted to use the bootfrom cheatcode to boot from the ISO image. I am using a Dell Inspiron 9400, which has a SATA hard disk which comes with Windows on its second partition. I created /grml/boot in C:\ with the contents of isolinux from the cd, and copied grub.iso to C:\ This is from my menu.lst from GRUB residing on a NTFS partition: default=0 timeout=7 title "grml" root (hd0,1) kernel /grml/boot/linux26 ramdisk_size=100000 init=/etc/init lang=it apm=power-off vga=791 nomce quiet BOOT_IMAGE=grml bootfrom=/dev/sda2/GRML.ISO initrd /grml/boot/minirt26.gz I can reach my GRUB menu, and kernel and initrd seem to load. Then I reach the place where the script looks for GRML in /dev/hd*, and my image is not found. Of course, I am then left at a minimal prompt. If I boot from the CD I can see the contents of the hard disk. What to do to let the kernel find the ISO? Thanks to everyone Roberto

aptitude upgrade - lots kept back

I used grml2hd to install 2.16.15, and I've upgraded to 2.16.16. Now when I run "aptitude upgrade", I have 259 packages kept back. The following packages have been kept back: acpitool alsa-utils apachetop apcupsd-cgi apt apt-utils artwiz-cursor ... xprint-common xserver-xorg xterm xutils xvfb xvncviewer I haven't modified /etc/apt/preferences. Have I done something else wrong, or is 259 packages kept back reasonable? -- Tom White

Note in particular that square brackets [] are no longer allowed. They were redundant and can simply be removed. QUITTING! Wenn du die Apostrophe von der Variable ($GW) mit den IP Adressen nimmst gehts. Die Generierung der IP Adressen und der Schnittstellen werden mit Treppchen belegt. Das sieht unschoen im dialog Fenster aus. GW="1. IP 2. IP" Abhilfe schafft in den Zeilen 90-91 print zu benutzen: GW="`print $(route -n | awk '/^0\.0\.0\.0/{print $2}')`" GWDEV="`print $(route -n | awk '/^0\.0\.0\.0/{print $NF}')`" Im BTS habe ich nichts dazu gefunden oder bin zu bloed. ATI drivers vs. Mesa

howdy, I tried to get the fglrx-kernel-2.6.16-grml drivers for ATI, but it seems like that creates problems with the install Mesa drivers, ie. I get the following error: Unpacking replacement fglrx-driver ... dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/fglrx-driver_8.25.18-1_i386.deb (--unpack): trying to overwrite `/usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2', which is also in package xlibmesa-gl dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe) Could I remove the Mesa libs? Removing the Mesa package doesn't work, because that would remove half my system (even amarok depends on it). What about removing the libGL.so.1.2 file, so that the fglrx can install its version; if the driver causes trouble, would this make my system instable? PCMCIA Network card not recognized

Hi, I've installed grml-small 0.2 on a laptop with grml2hd, and am trying to get the network card working, a Belkin F5D5020. I've confirmed the card is functional by using it on another system. As per its instructions, I've added the following lines to /etc/pcmcia/config : card "Belkin-5020" version "Belkin" , "F5D5020-PCMCIA-Network-Card" bind "pcnet_cs" Running grml-network gets "no supported network cards found." On Booting up I see: sit0: unknown hardware address type 776 eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device sit0: unknown hardware address type 776 Bind socket to interface: No such device exiting. When using the bash shell, backspacing on an empty command line causes a beep. How would one make zsh behave that way? I have setopt beep in my setup files, and the ambiguous completion of filenames beeps as expected, but not the backspacing on an empty command line. I find no information in the man pages on this matter. Any suggestion most welcome. grml in practice - present it

Hello grml-users, next week on 20th of may linuxday graz/austria will take place (www.linuxtage.at). I will hold a lecture about grml and a grml booth will be there too. All core developers and some other team members will be there! I'll present grml in practice at the grml booth. For example I'll present grml-Robocup (http://www.robocup.tugraz.at/). Robocup-grml is used as a live-cd for developers and as platform for the roboters kicking with AI. Another project I'll present is Trused Live Linux. It's a special flavour of grml including support for TPM (Trusted Platform Model) we are currently working on. Are you using grml at your working place? Do you have a customized version of grml in a productive environment? Please let me know! I'd be happy to be able to announce and present it at the grml booth. VMWare Resolution Suggestion.. (1280x1024)

Hello, If you want to use Resolution with 1280x1024 in VMWare you have to patch this file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.vmware You have to change Hz to this: HorizSync 33.0 - 74.0 VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0 And also add 1280x1024 in each Modelines it show now like that: Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" Maybe it would be a idea to integrate this settings to main grml build. grub-install fails

My Grml improvement suggestions

Here are my idea to improve grml even more! 1 Base it on testing (etch) Forget about unstable. There are enough distro's out there that are based on debian unstable. I found them all extremely volatile. You never knew what happens next after a dist-upgrade. Debian Etch on the other is up to date and without much problems. Another benefit from switching to Etch would that the developers have more time on their hand to focus on grml instead of fixing the errors in the unstable branch. And grml would also stand out more in the excessive amount of debian distro's available. So I say remove all unstable repositories! ;-) Users who really want could add them themselves but _i think that debian etch shoul be default. _2 Add an option to install grub instead of lilo with grml2hd. 3 Less windowmanagers please Grml comes with a whole array of windowmanager most of which are in my opion not good enough. I think it will provide more clarity if the amount of windowmanger would be largely decreased. You seem focused on fluxbox and I would choose to make that one the default. Thanks to the debian apt-get system the other windowsmanagers are just an apt-get install away. You could make an oversight in the grml wiki of the available windowmanagers and their pro and cons. I hope this information is helpfull in making grml a better product. Good luck!

kernel panic and slow start up

I've installed grml on a usb hard drive, and had success (except for it spending a lot - 10 minutes at least - of time "Loading kernel 2.6.16" if I remember the message properly). But after I did: apt-get update apt-get upgrade (which had some problems so I did apt-get -f install) I get a kernel panic during start up, it tells me to set the proper root when I start, or something like that. I suppose the first thing is how to resolve the kernel panic (I'm pretty sure that without doing a dist-upgrade my kernel shouldn't have been touched). If I can get that resolved, I'd like to know why my computer can boot faster from the CD than from the hard drive (it is a USB2 connection).

RAS Movie & CiscoVPN Problem

Hello, First of all you can watch the customized grml CD with ASCII Bootloader here: http://www.florian-keller.ch/grmlcustomized.avi To play this you will need mplayer with VMware Codec, or if you running windows you can download from VMware the right codec. Now to my Problem. I've compiled the Cisco VPN Client (4.7.00 (0640)) to my grml CD. I've network connectivity no firewall running or iptables activ but I cannot establish a VPN Session. Im using nothing special standard RJ45 Network with activ DHCP Server @ Router. All works well Internet works..., but I'm getting the follow message if I try to establish a VPN Connection: Initializing the VPN connection. Contacting the gateway at 194.x.x.x Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client Reason: Failed to establish a VPN connection I don't understand why Im getting this message. Once after lot of try & error I could establish the VPN Session but didn't know why :). I thought, it could be a problem with the ifplugd but if I uninstall this daemon it also don't work :(. On google I found lot of guys that have same problem but that was on wireless connection, Im not using this kind of connection. Hope someone got a good idea or a way to find out what the problem could be. Strange is also if I look at netstat -ta I see the connection that should be established is not the Server its the grml localhost :( // From syslog: May 7 19:54:15 RASCDv121-1348526093 net.agent[5689]: Cannot raise interface cipsec0: interface lo did not appear! Getting a shell on serial

I'm trying to use grml as the base for a hardware validation USB key on a machine which has no video at all, and is accessible through a serial console. After yanking the boot.msg splash screen and adding console=ttyS0,11500n8 to the append line, things are promising (moreso than knoppix which had serial support as a module :( ) The issue that I'm having is that even if I use the 'serial' cheatcode (in addition to having added the console bit to the append line), I'm not getting a shell on the serial console. I get as far as: [ ok ]hing for device(s) labeled with GRMLCFG. * Floppy device detected. Trying to access floppy disk. (Disable this via boot option: noautoconfig) [ ok ]devices with label GRMLCFG found. [ ok ]hed execution of main grml startup. (minicom messes up the pretty formatting) And then nothing. This is the point at which I would normally be getting a prompt and be on my merry way. What's the trick to getting it going? (If I boot the same USB key on my desktop, using the same cheatcode and append line, I get no boot progress to screen [all going to imaginary serial], just the grml.org logo in the upper left, and then suddenly the normal shell) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Friends, I have decided, probably against sane better judgement to go to grml as my main mission critical OS. Now, since I have been booting from grub on my other linux partition, I wish, obbviously, to boot from the grub files in /boot, as I am going to delete the other partition entirely. I need therefore, to make sure the computer boots from grml before I do anything else. Boot hangs at "Looking for CD-ROM"

Greetings, I'm trying to boot grml_small_0.2 from CDROM on a Dell inspiron 3200 laptop. The splash screen comes up, the informational screens F1 - F10 are viewable, but the boot process seems to hang at the point of searching for a cdrom: ... * Checking for USB. [ ok ] * Checking for firewire. [ ok ] * Scanning for USB/Firewire devices. [ ok ] * Enabling DMA acceleration for: hda [IBM-DTCA-24090] * Enabling DMA acceleration for: hdc [TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-1702BC] * Looking for CD-ROM in: /dev/hdc At this point the cdrom starts spinning...and the process hangs indefinitely. I also tried the following boot options (individually and together), to no avail: noapic nolapic pci=noacpi nosmp nodma grml_0.7 also hangs at this same point. The md5sums verify as ok. What other things could I try to get this to boot? How to use Splashscreen grml Scripts

Hello, First of all I want thank you for this great Live CD. Best one I know at the moment and I've used Many (slax, knoppix, whoppix, ....). There is only one thing that I miss in german called Modularität *g* like Slax Distro. Your Monitor Detections Script are the best I've ever seen. So now to my Problem: I'm currently remastering grml v0.8 to use it as a VPN Remote Connect Boot CD. I've seen you allready made some script for using Splashscreen while booting. /etc/init.d/splash.sh and /usr/bin/splash_grml.sh And also you using runlevel.conf script instead of rc.d symlinks. But if I integrate the splash.sh Script I didnt see the Framebuffer Loading Screen. So could someone explain me how to install this usefull stuff, would be nice. Hello grml-users, as mentioned on http://wiki.grml.org/doku.php?id=grml_0.7 you might have noticed, that the symlinks to /dev/cdrom and /dev/dvd don't exist on your grml 0.7 system. To fix this issue just run: # cd /etc/udev/rules.d/ # ln -s ../cd-aliases-generator.rules z75_cd-aliases-generator.rules If you want to mount a CD/DVD in grml live mode just manually mount the corresponding device (/dev/hdc or whatever) to /mnt/cdrom or /mnt/dvd. We are working on an updated version of udev which will fix this issue automatically on your grml-box when upgrading the udev package. regards, -mika-

Dear Friends, If any of you get bored with this, you can please feel free to tell me to shut up - but I really love the distro, as things just plain work, and this is positively frustrating. In an attempt to retrace the whole install, I took the following actions while still in grml live- 1. tzconfig to America/New_York date revealed the local time, EDT, to be five hours earlier than UTC, and showed as well UTC as being the value obtained from my hw clock, which is, of course, set to local time. 2. clean reboot, using tzselect with posix value set as "NYC-0", date revealed local time to be CEST and utc to be what my hw clock says. Thinking about this rationally, this can only mean that the live disk reports the hw clock as being UTC and there appears to be no way to tell it that this laptop BIOS is set to local time. On the debian installer, for instance, it asks at install if the hw clock is set to utc. This is an urgent need, as there was some dreadful workaround in kanotix, which was also a pain. Thus, the grml2hd needs one or two more questions, perhaps something like "is the bios clock set to utc?" and something like "location" as many config files set the locations as at. In other words two things have to happen at hd install: 1. location has to be set as where it is, not at 2. we have to be able to tell the install that the BIOS clock settings are either UTC or localtime. Now, I am am off to try to install again, with xorg 7 and fglrx drivers and see if I can get that to work. Thanks again. However, and this is a problem deep enough to render the system useless in the long run, there is no way to get the time to read correctly. I have tried editing the plethora of timezone files, and even /etc/sysconfig/grml until my fingers hurt, but here is the description of the malaise: BIOS clock(hwclock) set to local, as it is in most dual boot machines, for the obvious reason. PC boots, fly by statement is that the system clock is set to localtime, and this is always correct. gdm starts and the time is seen as six hours earlier, i e, if udt is ten, clock reads four. Setting the /etc/sysconfig/grml file as follows created yet more difference, dropping about four hours from the time! Now, somehow, the laptop is convinced that the localtime that I have in BIOS is the time in Wien, romantic but impractical. I am missing a symlink or something somewhere, and the google stuff is all the old redhat clock stuff. At some point, when installing grml to hdd, I must have missed a step, as I needed to make sure that grml knew that the machine was in the us, the hwclock is set to local time, and my local time is america/newyork. But why does this only affect life after x is started? I am happy to re-install completely, and do everything over again if need be, but there has to be an easier fix, or there has to be a way during the hdd install to make sure that the config files read the bios clock as localtime and we can always adjust from there. I apologise for the length, but this is a thorny issue. ppp help quick

Dear grml friends, Sorry for the urgent need, but I am writing this from my libranet partition as ppp vua slmodem driver does not function for me - there is one place I travel often with only dial-up(! - really - in the USA in 2006) and the command from kppp modem query on either /dev/modem or /dev/sl0 gives the answer for country "austria", thus creating the situation where kppp does not recognise the dial tone. I truly miss Austria, and shall someday return, but in th meantime, this should not happen, and I need to know why this happens, where the conf file is and what I can do to get a dial-up connexion working. Hello grml-users, if you are using a grml2hd installation please notice, that X11R7/Xorg 7.0 is in the Debian unstable pool now. http://gravityboy.livejournal.com/2006/04/11/ There might be issues when upgrading to the new Xorg version. Not only if you are using ATI/Nvidia drivers but also if you are running a plain grml installation. The grml-team strongly recommends to wait a few more days/weeks so problems have settled down. Bug reports to the Xorg package can be found in the Debian BTS: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?pkg=xserver-xorg Of course you can update your system if it's a testing box and want to test the new Xorg version. nfs-kernel-server wouldn't upgrade

I've installed grml to harddisk. I ran 'aptitude upgrade' and the recent nfs-kernel-server upgrade hung while trying to start nfsd. Running /etc/init.d/portmap start and restarting the upgrade fixed the problem. I don't remember turning off portmap in /etc/runlevel.conf, but maybe I or bastille-firewall did. -- -- Tom White

Hello again, I am currently running grml from a pendrive but even though the drive is mounted as sda1 and I can change to the folder, I can't see any of the files outside of the grml image. I admit I store extra files in a folder separate from grml. How do I get access to the pendrive as a drive.

I'm in a computer forensics class and they're using the helix cd. However, it's heavily gui oriented, so not the best choice for screen reader users. I think forensics can be added to the description of grml as being for text tools and network administrators. I found another forensic specific linux cd called "the penguin sleuthkit" put together by Ernest Baca Ernest has a list of 38 tools he felt were esential for a linux cd to be acceptable for forensic use. Grml has 34 out of 38 of these tools; very nice. the entire list of tools can be found at http://luge.cc.emory.edu/psl.html The list of 4 tools not currently in grml is 4. glimpse - Command line data indexing and searching tool. Need external storage to run properly - www.webglimpse.net 8. fenris - Multipurpose tracer - razor.bindview.com/tools/fenris/ 20. TCPtraceroute - Command line traceroute TCP packages - michael.toren.net/code/tcptraceroute/ 37. dig - Command line tool for querying domain name servers - read man page (man dig) Have these tools been considered as additions? I'm still increasingly impressed the longer I've been playing with grml, and have been telling my friends. Hoi! We are working on improving software (SW) RAID support within grml and would appreciate your help and opion about it. Please contribute! As you maybe know, partitions of type 0xfd (Linux raid autodetect) are scanned and automatically assembled into RAID arrays by the kernel. We noticed a strange behaviour on automatic assembling (nothing serious but a little bit confusing) and try to figure out what's the reason for it. First of all some questions to the ones of you using SW-RAID: * If you boot grml on a box using SW-RAID: do you expect to get a running SW-RAID setup (using the /dev/md? devices) or do you prefer to set it up and start on your own (so neither grml nor kernel touches it)? * Say you have /dev/hda1 and /dev/hdb1 as part of SW-RAID /dev/md0. Do you expect to get entries for /dev/hda1, /dev/hdb1 and /dev/md0 in your /etc/fstab? Which entries do you expect to get? Next step: If you have a SW-RAID setup and can boot grml on the box please try to contribute via running the following steps and save output of all commands in a file. Send the file via mail to me. Hello and thank you to the grml team. With the help of a friend here I have grml running nicely on a pendrive, I was even fortunate enough to have a laptop that had 1 of 3 supported wireless cards, just have to tpe dhclient and speechd-up after bootup How much like a normal linux install is grml now that I have it running on a pendrive. Have any users tried installing extra packages? Maybe we could consider a larger image specifically for pendrive users with more programs installed. Have a question though, How can I change the keyboard to Dvorak. Keep up the good work maybe after I learn linux I might have more constructive things to say. (Backup your ~/.muttrc first to make sure you don't overwrite anything.) To send mail take a look at msmtp, a sample configuration file is shipped with grml: ~/.msmtprc Filter your mail using procmail. It requires some scripting work to get only security related packages in Debian unstable, that's difficult by design. > - perhaps a way to (re)compile the kernel on a user-friendly based system? Don't compile the kernel on your own unless you have a *really* good reason to do that. That's the work of the distributor, not really an end-user task with kernel 2.6. As the manpage of rebuildfstab says: rebuildfstab uses the tool scanpartition to scan for devices located in /dev and adds entries for devices / partitions which are not available in /etc/fstab yet. It does not mount any partitions automatically. If you want to use /dev/hda2 as your home partition, take the entry for /dev/hda2 from /etc/fstab and move it to the top of the /etc/fstab. *Everything* below the "warning-line" will be deleted by next run of rebuildfstab. If you don't want the rebuildfstab feature set CONFIG_FSTAB='no' in /etc/grml/autoconfig. Sorry, that's not an option for me. Just run 'apt-get remove xserver-xorg' to remove the X-window system on your installation.
