Remastering grml

I think I got the basics of remastering grml down OK: I copy the contents of the squashfs to a writable folder, chroot into it, do whatever I have to do, leave, recompress the image copy it back and rebuild the ISO image. Works well enough. But: The resulting ISO image turns out much bigger than I anticipated. For example, I added a package that takes up about 1.5M on disk, but it increased the size of the ISO by about 14M. I mad sure to call 'apt-get clean' before leaving the chroot and to verify that /var/tmp and /root were empty and yet, there is space wasted that I can't account for. Can anyone give me any pointers as to what I can do to make sure that I don't add unnecessary ballast to my remastered ISO? Thanks, -juergen

Since grml seems to become more and more THE live-cd for admins, and maybe often being used for recovery purpose to save data from more or less "dead" boxes - did anybody think of taking a look at the BadRam Kernelpatch ? http://rick.vanrein.org/linux/badram/index.html --------------------------------------- Description: BadRAM: Linux kernel support for broken RAM modules Summary: This page proposes an approach to support RAMs with defective addresses, This may open interesting business perspectives, where those RAMs can be sold under a white label for less money rather than discarded of without any profit. Objective of the project My objective is to patch the Linux kernel in such a way that it can handle defective RAM modules. With defective RAM, I mean RAM which has some bits wrong at some (known) addresses. Normally, such RAM is considered useless and thrown away; the larger RAMs get, the higher the chances of failing addresses. With ever growing RAM sizes, it would therefore be pleasant to have an alternative to discarding of defective RAM chips. --------------------------------------- Unfortunately, I don`t have personal experience with this patch (yet), but maybe there are people on this list who know that patch already !? mixing of distributions grml - unstable - testing - sarge for notebook

Hallo Liste For the user applications I would like to use as much as possible stable applications, also for a low update rate. (gnome desktop, gdm, evolution...) For the hardware I am forced to use up to date kernel drivers X server etc . I did not succeed up to now to resolve these dependencies. So I cannot use the notebook. Do I need dbus ? it is broken when installing gnome desktop environment. Hallo When I install a regular debian sarge I am induced to enter a non root user to receive certain mails etc. This user has then uid 1000 gid 1000. Since converting old PCs to debian sarge now I own 3 (three) installations where this is my identity and I use it for my regular work. For a new notebook, which does not work with sarge, I choose to use grml, and have not yet come to the point of installing my user account. Failure mode testing (network)

It can be annoying to run grml without a network. When you unplug ethernet and boot grml, various 'strange' things happen. Name resolution and network time fail. That is normal, but the problem is retry/timeout settings. After a couple of minutes the daemon error messages should stop. Some reappear for long periods of time. Suggestion: test grml in this 'failure' mode and adjust the retry/timeout factors. Sometimes, even when you have a working network, the name resolution system is down, giving a similar result.

Hallo zusammen, ich versuch seit einigen Tagen mein erstes grml zum Laufen zu bekommen und scheitere am Boot-Vorgang. Ich habe das iso-Image von grml 0.8 und auch das Image von grml_small 0.2 heruntergeladen und beide auf je eine CD gebrannt ( alles unter WXP - Asche auf mein Haupt ). Die CD scheint im ersten Moment zu funktionieren, aber die beiden Zeilen vor dem boot-Prompt und die Meldung nach dem Druck auf die ENTER-Taste können mich nicht erfreuen... Unknown keyword in config file Unknown keyword in config file boot: Could not find kernel image: grml Die MD5 Checksummen der beiden Images sind OK. Gibt es eine Möglichkeit, die gebrannte CD in ähnlicher Art und Weise zu überprüfen? Beide CD's lassen sich vollständig und ohne Fehlermeldung lesen. Dass ich das alles unter Windows mache, und ein Image mit Nero brenne, sollte doch kein Problem sein?! Zumindest war es das bei Knoppix oder Debian bis jezt nicht. Weiß vielleicht jemand von Euch Rat, denn ich gehe davon aus, dass ich irgendetas falsch mache. bis dann Thomas ...und schönes Wochenende...

Remastering GRML with kernel

Hello ! I´d like to integrate VMWare Server onto a GRML-CD. The Remastering-Howto at http://wiki.grml.org/doku.php?id=remastering is quite nice - but it doesn`t menation what to bear in mind, if i want to rebuild the grml kernel, too !? When installing vmware server, kernel-source is needed. this doesn`t come with grml, afaik. so - i need to setup a kernel build environment inside my "grml-copied-to-disk", install kernel-source, apply patches install vmware server and build vmware specific kernel modules with "vmware-config.pl". is anybody out there who already did this and likes to share his experience ? any tips would be highly welcome! regards roland

Hallo Mailingliste grml ich habe hier ein relativ neues Notebook Fujitsu Siemens amilopro V2030, das mit nicht installiertem Knoppix 4.01 (auf DVD) kam. Knoppix hat aber keine gute HDD Systemstabilität. Aber mit debian sarge ist das Geraet nicht zum vollständigen Leben (kernel!) zu erwecken ist. Aus bekannten Gruenden benütze ich jetzt grml 0.8, das mir bei meiner server-reinstallation von grossen Nutzen war. Auf dem server habe ich debian sarge. (mit nur 2 unstable anwendungen) Dort werden auch die grossen Projekt kompiliert. Jetzt brauche ich noch einige sachen von sarge z.B. gcc 3.3.5 auf dem Notebook. Bei dem Versuch, das zu verknüpfen habe ich einiges zersch..... (Überschrift) und auch nach der Rückgängigmachung diverser Massnahmen und der versuchten Wiederherstellung scrollt der Bildschirm nicht mehr, wenn er einmal voll ist. Erst mit z.B. ALT-F2; ALT-F1 sehe ich dann erst die aktualisierte Konsole. Der Bildschirminhalt waechst sozusagen über den unteren Bildschirmrand, statt nach oben wegzugehen. Bin RATLOS, ist nicht gut arbeiten wenn ich nichts mehr sehe. mfG Erich

Hi, could it be syslog-g is not starting at boot-time? I'm wondering because my last syslog entry is from 23. totem, mplayer and security

Synptom: xine media player, gnome cdplayer , vlc all play music cds, totem and mplayer do not, but always did in debian and libranet hint: at first root could play the cd on totem, then next time "** (totem:4639): WARNING **: Failed to connect to the session bus: Did not recei ve a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply , the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. " I would like to disable any part of any security system which prohibits any thing I do from accessing anything. I am well aware that I am choosing convenience over safety. I know grml is not for noobs but sysadmins, and I use the brilliant installer to make a multimedia general purpose laptop, so I am merely begging for a solution. Everything I have googled points to selinux as the culprit. How do I rid myself of any selinux, hardened, secure, anything and get what I need, which is every programme can access whatever it needs to play whatever media I want, irrespective of what a rational sysadmin in a business setting would ever want? Normal user not permitted for pci scan

Hi, when I tried to use the xvidix driver for mplayer, I get "Error occurred during pci scan: Operation not permitted" error for normal user, but root is ok. How can I fix it? hi I'm sure most of you have seen it before, but any of you know how to fix it? Ie, the following error when playing movies with mplayer: Linux RTC init error in ioctl (rtc_irqp_set 1024): Inappropriate ioctl for device Try adding "echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq" to your system startup scripts. Problem of following "echo" command is, I just did, and still get the error. $ cat /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq 1024 Any comment? thanks

fonts.dir missing after aptitude upgrade

"grml-x fluxbox" quit starting X on my grml hd system a couple of "aptitude upgrade"s ago; X can't find the "fixed" font. Looking through my font directories I found that most of my "fonts.dir" files were now only "0". I tried "mkfontdir" but got another 2 byte "fonts.dir". Most of the font directories contain "font.alias" files rather than font files; I assume "mkfontdir" can't find the fonts listed in "font.alias" What should I do to correct my "fonts.dir" files? -- Tom White

grml netcardconfig

Hi, I found something annoying (dunno if it is intended or not, but it doesn't work for m at least. I've got 2 NIC's and I use this box to forward internet to another one/whole network. I use eth0 as internet connection, eth1 wit� a static IP and dnsmasq as DNS/DHCP server. Now if I configure eth1 with the netcardconfig, networking doesn't work any longer. now I found in the home-router-howto at gentoo that the network and gateway option aren't used, so that solved the problem. Maybe this is intentional, or the script should make a difference between an interface which 'receives' internet or one that forwards it. BTW i've written a little script to enable routing with iptables, if you want it, drop me a note. JP -- I use grml (http://grml.org/)

Text based Email: what do I need?

Hi, all! I've recently started using grml for rescue purposes. First of all, I would like to thank the team for developing such a magnificent distro. Bravo! Now for the question. I used to be a Windows user, and a MS-DOS user before that. About an year ago I switched to Linux. I decided to give my Email routine a bit of a twist by using grml for Email and backing up the msgs to my USB stick. However, I am completely lost in the vast array of software involved and need a quick tour of what old-school text-based mail is about and what I need to know in order to make a quick (and dirty) setup. What I want to do is: 1. set up POP access (using SSL) to my Gmail.com account, 2. filter mailing list messages and etc. into different folders, 3. send mail using Gmail.com's SMTP server, 4. locating and backing up messages to USB stick. I've googled about quite extensively, but it's just too much info for an absolute CLI mail beginner. Thanks, B

Locale settings for US

Grml locale stuff is developing, but here's a question. We have a strange behavior on the numeric keypad. In grml tty it gives a period (US style). In X sessions it gives a comma (European style). What should we set to fix this? USERGROUPS=no ?

Since still nobody could give me a reason why every user should have his own group (or can you?) i prefer setting USERGROUPS=no in /etc/adduser.conf experimenting with remastering grml i found out that there are some places with a "chmod grml.grml <dir>" ( /etc/grml/autoconfig.functions, /etc/init.d/grml-home ) I think by changing this to "chmod grml: <dir>" we would support both ways. Well, and since i would like it that way, i'm requesting that little change :) Worf

Rerunning lilo

Hi everyone, I am new to the list and Linux. I installed GRML on my Toshiba a55. I am blind and I was able to resize my hard drive, and install the grml to the hard drive with no problem. This is what I had partitioned my hard drive to, hda1 26G, hda2 2g fat32, hda3 1G Linux swap, and hda4 Linux. Thank you guys for setting up such an awesome distribution. I have been looking for this for a long time. I have been reading and learning . I figured that I would reconfigure my hard rive so that I had an extended partition. This is what I changed it to hda1 26G ntfs, hda2 1G Linux swap, hda33G Linux, hda4 extended, hda5 fat16 5G, and hda6 4G Linux. I reran the grml2hd script, it went well, it said that lilo ran successfully. However it did not. So I mounted hda3 the Linux partition, and copied the /mnt/hda3/etc/lilo.conf to the /etc/lilo.conf. I then ran /sbin/lilo It failed saying that /dev/hda3 is not set to be active. I then discovered that the line /device/hda3 was in the place where /dev/had been in my original configuration. I attempted to change it to /dev/had. I tried to rerun lilo again, it failed attempting to map to unmapped device oxoee or something. I am sorry I did not write exactly what it said down. However I believe that you guys probably are familiar with what is happening. I do not have a clue though. I cannot seem to find any thing on what is happening on the net either. Filesystem not clean on boot up

Hi What's the difference between using the command "reboot" and let the keyboard trigger the "init 6" to reboot? I notice I always get the "Filesystem not clean" message having switched over to grml when rebooting. I trigger the reboot via keyboard to issue init 6. Didn't notice so when using Debian Sarge though. Can I rely on keyboard/HW triggers for reboot or poweroff, or I'd better type the command? Or, the Grml is more a live system which has skips some steps that normal non-live systems will do when shutdown? I'm using the reiserfs systems. thanks

A view requests to make remastering easier

I've experimented quite a bit with remastering grml. Basically i wanted to do change the package list to about that what i have on my desktop, which basically is mostly kde and kde apps, stuff like quanta, kile, etc... I'm quite there now, it works almost the way i want it. To have it working perfectly i would only need a view changes/additions to the grml scripts: *) option to change the default windowmanager - not hardcoding wm-ng in /etc/grml/autoconfig.functions *) options to start x on boot, so you can either - don't do anything - just create xorg.conf, but don't start xorg - create xorg.config and start xorg well, that's basically it. :) Worf

The test setup: - GForce2MX - Samsung Syncmaster 940B (a 19" tft) - Logitech MX500 mouse on USB. I consider my setup not that exotic, but there are some problems with the xorg.conf that grml-x generates: *) The frequency for tft's should be 60Hz. I have to run grml-x with the option -hsync 60-60, don't know if it's possible to have this detected automatically. *) I get 2 Entries for mouse in the xorg.conf One "USB Mouse" and one "PS/2 Mouse". This would not be that bad actually, but both use device /dev/input/mice, resulting in a unusable x (double mouse speed and every klick being a double klick) I think this needs some tweaking :) Worf

Hi, while seeting up grml (HD-install) as my new working environmnet, I wanted to print on my CUPS printer server via cups-client from my grml running notebook: Printing via "old" (BSD style) commands lpr $somefile always returns something like: "jobs queued, but cannot start daemon." and no page was printing :( Because "lpstat -o -p -d" shows all available printer queues, I was perplexed After playing around a bit I noticed that # aptitude show lpr Unable to find an archive "grml" for the package "lpr" Package: lpr State: installed ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ is the problem. When printing via CUPS you need the wrapper package "cupsys-bsd" instead of "lpr" to be installed - otherwise all print jobs are handled by old BSD style lpr queue :/ This is _not_ really a grml bug, but maybe coexistent installing both of these packages should be thought over. Hi I found that grml site is not that easy to quickly location information. Last time, when promoting grml-small in debian-users, it took me quite a while to find the link url to grml-small (the info, not its problems). Now I'm trying to find all packages available in grml 0.8. I remember seeing such page on grml before, but can't find it any more. Mika, please put it at least in grml 0.8 Release Notes, and if you have time, maybe it is good to think of a strategy to enable better navigation on grml site. thanks

Grml mysql services

Hi I notice that the mysql services in grml is different that I used to use. I used to only have the "mysql" service, but grml default is that "mysql" service is disabled while other two mysql-ndb-mgm & mysql-ndb are enabled: $ grep mysql /etc/runlevel.conf 19 - 2,3,4,5 /etc/init.d/mysql-ndb-mgm 20 0,1,6 - /etc/init.d/mysql 20 0,1,6 2,3,4,5 /etc/init.d/mysql-ndb 21 0,1,6 - /etc/init.d/mysql-ndb-mgm What are those two other two "mysql" service? Can they substitute the "mysql" service? If I enable the "mysql" service myself, should I disable the other two? The reason I'm asking is that I get the following error when trying to install a package that depends on mysql: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) thanks

Updating a Devel Harddisk Installation

As i'm using the harddisk installation on one of my computers, and i don't want to reinstall with each new devel-release, this would very convenient. It generates directories for all defined "mounting-targets" and adds an entry to /mnt/.grml-auto-created-do-not-delete-this-file for all automatically generated devices as well. When running [grml-]rebuildfstab once more it checks for present entries and deletes all auto-generated directories in /mnt if there does not exist an entry in /etc/fstab anymore. If you manually create a directory in /mnt/ it won't be touched at all. I'm just preparing the packages grml-rebuildfstab-0.3 and grml-scanpartitions-0.3 and write documentation for all the new stuff. Hello, I'd like to ask for your comments about handling of external usb devices on grml. As you might know mounting usb pens on grml is possible via running 'mount /mnt/external1' (corresponding to /dev/sda1) and 'mount /mnt/external' (corresponding to /dev/sda). As stated in a mail by Tong to the grml user mailinglist the problems start with multiple devices or devices with several partitions on it. I'd like to improve usability and handling of it therefore. The fs-label directories in /mnt won't be deleted automatically. If you want to disable the above feature at all on your grml system you would just have to remove the according udev rules file. My curiosity gets the better of me.... start debug, date gives NY, login as root, date still gives NY. login as yazdzik, but use root terminal, date gives Wien, thus explaining why the admin mode of kcontrol does so, as it is using a different tty, so to speak. So, now we know: 1. debug mode, date is always correct, NY 2. whether debug or normal grml boot, gdm always gives correct date reading when logged in as root or user 3. in X(gdm) su to root in zsh gives date as Wien, not NY, as does gksu terminal, as does kcontrol as root (or switching to admin mode via gui in kcontrol), irrespective of desktop(kde, gnome, flux) 4. logging into kde from gdm as root, kcontrol gives correct reading, NY 5. kdm always gives wrong date reading - at reboot, bios is reset to CEST, so next boot is six hours ahead of NY time. Note well, not to GMT, but CEST!!! So, all relevant information is there - what causes this and how do we remedy it? An ashamed and sorry Martin begs for patience and forbearance. (duldsam comes out weird in English ;) ) Any ideas at all? -M

Hallo, leider startet grml nicht auf meinem Laptop (Start von CD). Die div. Schnittstellen (USB, Firewire, etc.) werden gesucht, allerdings taucht anschließend folgende Fehlermeldung auf: > mount: Mounting /cdrom/GRML/GRML on /GRML failed: Invalid argument > Can't find grml filesystem, sorry. Die Zeile direkt davor besagt nur: Accessing grml CD-ROM at: /dev/hdc [ok] Ich verwende grml 0.8 auf einem HP Omnibook 6100. ACPI-Probleme o.ä. hatte ich auf dem Gerät eigentlich noch nie. Natürlich habe ich auch schon mit "grml acpi=off noapm noapic" sowie Kombinationen mit "failsafe" gestartet, allerdings ohne dass sich im Ergebnis irgendetwas verändert hätte. Bei "debug" weiß ich nicht so recht, was ich eingeben soll. Was kann ich noch machen, um den Fehler zu diagnostizieren bzw. vielleicht sogar zu beheben? Ich hoffe mal, mein Problem ist keine FAQ, jedenfalls habe ich nichts entsprechendes in der FAQ oder im Wiki gefunden. -- Felix

[n]: Okay, what I want is for the complete system to know that bios is set to NY, all programmes should read time as NY, and when I come home to Klagenfurt or Scotland, allow me to display those times with the gui, as being set off from the system time, which has to be NY. This has something to do with the grml2hd setup but what I do not know. What it does have to do with the problem as I originally described it is that kde root always takes the time from the system time. Thus, kdm will presume that Vienna/AT is in fact the correct time, then, at reboot, set the hw clock to it. This is not desirable, for obvious reasons. Evolution, kontact, the clock screensaver, everything should reflect where I am, not where the install script thinks I should be, whether or not I would rather be there. The solution in grml7 was to "no" all the references in time autoconfig. Why does this not work in 8? Thanks for being so patient. Dear Friends, A most peculiar set of behaviours: 1. Using gdm, whether kde or gnome desktop, times are all correctly identified as New York. 2. Using kdm, nothing changes the settings away from Vienna, again, whether gnome or kde desktop, times are cest. 3. The settings, trash, and home folders are missing from kde/konqueror(may or may not be related. 4. Checking it out from gnome or flux, kcontrol will accept the gui order to move timezone to new york, but it does not "take." 5. The usual things, disabling all the time things in autoconfig have no effect. 6. Why would kdm take a different tz setting than gdm? Best, M

network not on when boot up Grml 0.8

Hi I had the problem before in Grml 0.7, and now in Grml 0.8 -- my network not on when booting up Live CD. /etc/init.d/networking start works only for lo, not eth0. ifconfig -a shows only the 'lo' device. Any one having the same issue? thanks

Hi Currently grml does not provides the /dev/dvd link. I remember I read somewhere that merely adding a rule symlink to /etc/udev/rules.d/ will do. But I just can't find it any more. Any one knows about how to do it? thanks tong

Wishlist: automount by names

Hi I know grml can (re)generate fstab on boot each time. However, I'd like to access my partitions by their names instead of sda7, sda12, which I have no way to remember. So I have to disable the automatic fstab generation on boot. I hope that grml can utilize the automount, as knopsis does, and use udev to access them by their names, ie disk labels. The bonus is that USB drives will be taken care of as well by this. Would this happen in near future, or I'm out of luck and have to find the way to do it myself. thanks tong

If I vary the zipping level from gpg I get more errors with higher compression and less errors with lower compression. I found out that the md5sum of restored "damaged copies" is the same as of the original files (as Mr. Marcus Williams wrote). My solution is to verify the "damaged copies" against the filesystem. Dependency on console bitmap fonts

Hi I'm not used to the new console-terminus font, and would perfer the traditional one. However, I can't remove it: $ apt-get remove --purge console-terminus The following packages will be REMOVED: console-terminus* grml* grml-autoconfig* grml-debugtools* grml-etc* grml-x* 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 6 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Would it be a better idea to have this extra eye candy to be recommended, as opposed to required? I was able to remove it in grml0.7 and didn't have any problem with that... thanks tong

grml0.8 grml2hd test report

Hi I just tried grml2hd from grml0.8 with: grml2hd partion=/dev/sda4 mbr=/dev/sda4 filesystem=ext3 user=tong - grml2hd said partion /dev/sda4 can't be found. Manually choose the sda4 from the provided menu entry works fine. - "user=" parameter didn't work. grml2hd still prompts 'grml' as the default user. The mbr & filesystem parameter seem to be working fine. - Since I don't have network access (due to no eth0), I run grml2hd as-is, ie, without using the latest version. But it failed to create initrd, because it can't find the grml kernel module file, IIRC. - Installing lilo failed subsequently, because it can't find the initrd.

Grml2hd Xorg.conf screen blanks

grml live CD 0.8 final plus "apt-get update; apt-get install grml2hd" At the xorg.conf step, if I say "yes," part of the screen goes black. The dialogs become impossible, although staying active. (If only they were movable with the mouse.) If I say "no" everything works fine. The blackness is top to bottom across ~40% of the horizontal, sort of middle of screen. nVidia GeForce card, but without nvidia drivers, just the live CD with no special boot codes (except noswap). When I ctrl-c out of the script, the screen is still bad, so I have to reboot. M

Ich betreibe ein Debian-Sarge-Crypto-Software-Raid1-System mit zwei Festplatten auf einem Scaleo 600 AXP 21 1 1500MB (AMD Athlon(tm) XP2100+). Bootloader: GRUB, Kernel: 2.6.8-3-k7, Partitionierung: 1. /boot unverschlüsselt /dev/md0 2. / verschlüsselt /dev/mapper/root 3. /usr „ /dev/mapper/usr 4. /var „ /dev/mapper/var 5. /swap „ /dev/mapper/swap 6. /tmp „ /dev/mapper/tmp 7. /home „ /dev/mapper/home 8. unverschlüsselt /dev/md7 Alle sind ext3fs Filesysteme. Von diesem PC will ich eine verschlüsselte Komplettsicherung erstellen. Nach dem Booten von *grml 0.8 - Codename Funkenzutzler *finde ich alle Raid- Partitionen richtig zugeordnet wieder. Afterwards i?ve tried booting gentoo 2.6.17-r5 and -r6 and vanilla 2.6.18-rc4 ; neither could get the controller to function properly. The JMicron controllers seem to be detected by the system, but not the attached drives... time zone again

Dear Mika and Friends, Okay, as you read in the other thread, I now have fglrx with working 3d hw accel. I dare not, however, boot out of old grml into new, because new grml is convinced that my hw clock is set to gmt. Since this is a laptop, I need to boot into new grml and tell it that my clock is in NYC, edt, my laptop is, sadly, in NYC, edt, and there is only one time I need to know today, which is the time in NYC. tz config sets the time to six hours earlier, because it is sure that I must be wrong. I am not. I know where I am. I have disabled all the time stuff in autoconfig. There is not point even trying to set up evolution and so on until every app takes its time settings from the system clock, which should take its settings from the cmos clock, which, because we all have to boot into windows once a year, is set to local time. Please find a simple solution to this. Dear Friends, Many thanks to Lars for the files. Lars has the driver working, but not the kernel modules for 3d. I can, with no effort, have the fglrx driver for 2d.(never been an issue - perhaps I was unclear - by "working, I mean a full module load with functional 3d, nothing less, since that is the design objective of the driver. Note that the usual blurb is "if x works but no 3d, kernel module is not loading.) Finally, one can build and load the kernel module from either the grml sources, or the ati site. This is big progress, as only the grml sources worked in .7. The good news on this is that the behaviour of the live cd and the install are exactly the same - whether grml-x -module fglrx or modprobe fglrx, I get the same result. The bad news is that that result is best described as the screen slowly blanking to a white mess of nothing. Notes: same for all versions of xorg, 7 and 7.1. 3d works perfectly in grml 7 on this box, with xorg 7.0, so there is no issue with 7.0, in se. only the grml version works in .7, any attempt to use the ati packages does not allow the build of a loadable module. obviously, the ati installer works fine in sid when sid is installed via the etch installer, although I have not tested it with xorg 7.1. Please read the word "works" as in strict english, to wit, function as per design, i e, 3d is provided by fglrx libs, since the purpose of the driver is to provide both 2d and 3d acceleration. So, why does the driver work in grml 7 but not 8? glxinfo.txt is from the .7 install. Will keep exploring. grml2hd was without any problem whatsoever, except for ghe fglrx driver - I shall try two or three solutions and write back, but grml-x should work to produce a valid working 3d system if at all possible. Well, that is a big "if" ;) best, M

Hi I must have one fundamental step missing from setting up my compiling environment. The website http://grml.org/ which resolves to http://81.223.126.153/ has been down all day. The grml package repositories are unaccessible, too. Is anyone in North/South America having the same problem? Maybe bandwidth quota was exceeded with the 0.8 release. If so, it would be nice for grml's provider to show a specific error message. Hi! I wanted to Install Windows on a computer where debian was already installed. after istalling (no error messages), I didn't see any boot manager, just "NTLDR is missing"* I installed windows again. I saw my partitions, but then the same error happened again. I tried to install debian. I didn't see my partitions(!) I ran knoppix 4.0.2 DVD and grml 0.8. I saw my partitions, but they seemed to be emty. (how) can I save my important data? *two notes: 1# the error "NTLDR is missing" is my personal translation of "NTLDR fehlt(german)" maybe this tanslation is not correct. 2# when I ran "cfdisk" on grml when it worked, it crashed with a error I don't rember... I think it was "irregular size" or anything like that. greethings johannes

Mika, please enjoy a well-deserved restful summer holiday, you and the whole grml team. Your responsiveness and help to users and beta testers is the best. The team really pays attention to user requests and interests. Other Linux distributions should be using grml as a foundation. "For the record, in case anyone googles this, the install from zero to full flash, java, 3d accel, network, and all codecs working in browsers, is, on my 2.16g pentium m, is only twenty-seven minutes (not including the dreadful kde install, which takes of course, at least half an hour)." http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.distributions.grml.user/41 Grml quality is so high that it puts its own version number to shame. It should be "8.0" instead of "0.8." That would give a better idea of the quality level. Grml is an up-to-date, capable, flexible, and rock-solid distribution. All the stability of Debian with up-to-date packages and regular release cycles. And very easy to install thanks to the scripts. I don't even feel like a sysadmin when I use grml! Mark

However, having choosing Configuration > Focus Model > Auto Raise, I still can't get the auto raise feature. So I think that this issue is related to how grml configure X/fluxbox by default. Missing lo device

howdy, after an apt-get upgrade to grml 0.8 I seem to be missing my loopback lo device (ifconfig just shows my eth0 device after startup). My /etc/network/interfaces contains: # The loopback interface automatically added when upgrading auto lo iface lo inet loopback Has anybody else seen this? I only noticed this because thunderbird and firefox started behaving oddly and Java debugging stopped working (Java debugging needs to listen to a localhost port). ndiswrapper solved

Dear friends, The ndiswrapper is a broadcom chip issue, combined with the kernel 2.6.17 enabled the bcm43xx module by default. My experimentation was trying to load the wrapper, then when it did not work, rm the other interfering modules. This did not work. Solution for those who use broadcom wireless(almost all dell laptops): in order(important) rmmod bcm43xx ndiswrapper -i /wherever/the/hell/it/is modprobe ndiswrapper nano /etc/network/interfaces iface wlan0 inet dhcp iwconfig wlan0 essid blah key whatever ifup wlan0 One must, for some reason, remove the other bcm modules first, as udev seems to grab the 43xx module for the wireless card, and I presume there is some sort of tree which holds the whole thing up. Now, onto installing.... BTW, grml-x works perfectly every time, and, once I got the internet up, everthing else appeare to work OTOB. Bring up network on boot up

Hi My network is not initiated on grml 0.7 hd install boot up. I have to manually started it up afterward. I'm wondering why this is happening. - Is it because my network service is not up? grep network /etc/runlevel.conf 35 - S /etc/init.d/networking - Is it because I've changed my dhcp client from pump to dhclient? - or something else? thanks

Hoi, to all of you who are running a grml system or plan to do so: Affected software ================= grml2hd - install grml on harddisk Problem ======= Setting the password in grml2hd is done via chpasswd. If you provide a password it will be set correct and login is possible with the provided password. But login is also possible with providing just the first 8 characters of the password. Fix for existing installations ============================== Please run 'passwd' manually after hd-installation (for normal user and user root). So if you are using passwords with more than 8 characters please run: # passwd and # passwd <username> where <username> is the user with UID 1000 on your grml system. This makes sure that login is possible only with the full length password. Fix for upcoming grml2hd installations ======================================= Please run: # apt-get update ; apt-get install grml2hd before running grml2hd itself so you get the fixed and up2date grml2hd version. grml 0.8: how to use my 3com pcmcia card?

The main problem of this machine are 64 MB RAM :-( "hwinfo --pcmcia" gives no output, so does "hwinfo --netcard". The modules pcmcia, yenta_socket, and 3c589_cs are loaded. Still ifconfig does not give me eth0 - "no device available". grml ;-) What modules do I have to install to make this card run? It worked with 0.7, so there may be a chance to run it on 0.8 too... still no ndiswrapper

Dear friends, 8 is great, but, without ndiswrapper, useless to me. modprobe ndiswrapper apparently loads the module, as the relevant section of lsmod "usbcore 967768 ndiswrapper,usb_storage,ohci_hcd,uhci_hcd,ehci_hcd" shows it to be present, but iwconfig wlan0 tells me there is no such device. The only difference I can see in wlan folder in etc is that there is some sort of srcipt. The point is, the module does nothing, and I cannot connect to the world. Any ideas? checkinstall still broken?

Hi When I saw the following checkinstall error messages [1], I tried to update my checkinstall. But, I realized that the errors are still not fixed [2]. Can somebody confirm that checkinstall is still broken? Is there alternative solutions? I tried to regain dhcp leases but that didn't help. By then, I ran out of ideas so I rebooted. However, same things happened, and I still can't get onto the Internet. Note that the Internet is working fine. The other machine that's using the same router worked fine. Also, AOK when I boot back to Debian. Please help. It's urgent. thanks

Hi Which cheet code can allow the Live-CD to pre-configure X after bootup? I want the step of "grml-x fluxbox" to be define in my boot code, so that I can "startx" as normal. thanks

Hi I just notice a bug in grep and reported it. However, I noticed that the bug report was submitted to: "GRML Project Bug Tracking System", instead of the official Debian Bug Tracking System. How will the GRML Bug Tracking System handle such case, ie, packages that are not GRML specific? Is there any way to toggle between the Bug Tracking Systems when reporting bugs? thanks

grml 0.8-rc1, X and ATI

Hi: I have an ATI card. I was not able to use Xorg in grml 0.7 except after HD install. Yesterday, I tried the grml 0.8-rc1 and found that I was still not able to use X out of box. I was trying to find an appropriate (fallback) driver for X, I tried: grml-x -module ati grml-x -module radeon grml-x -module vesa None can start X. Is it possible to use X without installing anything, ie. the ATI proprietary driver fglrx? thanks
