Hi, I packaged a few of Intel's out of tree NIC drivers from http://sourceforge.net/projects/e1000/ as dkms based .debs and included them in a custom grml image. I'll explain how; if there is interest, I can also share my packages (although, as you'll see, they're likely sub-par, because I did not take the time to really understand what I was doing; in particular, I fear the e1000e module may not always build correctly at grml-live time, while it builds correctly on the live system). 1. I grabbed some tarballs from http://sourceforge.net/projects/e1000/: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 269997 Sep 5 16:25 e1000e-2.5.4.tar.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 303648 Sep 17 02:23 igb-5.0.6.tar.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 362747 Sep 30 23:21 ixgbe-3.18.7.tar.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 140096 Sep 30 23:31 ixgbevf-2.11.3.tar.gz 2. I extracted each. 3. I moved the contents of foo-1.2.3/src to foo-1.2.3 itself in each. 4. I created a dkms.conf like the following in the root of every driver root directory (i.e. foo-1.2.3/): AUTOINSTALL="yes" BUILT_MODULE_NAME[0]="igb" CLEAN="make clean" DEST_MODULE_LOCATION="/updates" DEST_MODULE_NAME[0]="igb" PACKAGE_NAME="igb" PACKAGE_VERSION="5.0.6" 5. I made sure the Makefiles get the kernel version to build for from the KERNELRELEASE ennvar (not BUILD_KERNEL or similar), because this is what dkms sets: sed -i 's/BUILD_KERNEL/KERNELRELEASE/g' Makefile (In at least one case, I also replaced an #ifdef CONFIG_PM_SLEEP with #ifdef CONFIG_PM in netdev.c because the module didn't build for my kernel otherwise, but this problem doesn't manifest with the grml kernel because it defines either both or neither.) 6. I issued the following dkms commands (from the source directories): dkms add -m foo -v 1.2.3 dkms mkdeb -m foo -v 1.2.3 --source-only (Naturally, you have to replace 'foo' with the name of the module and 1.2.3 with the actual version number.) The second command will create a .deb and dump it somewhere under /var/lib/dkms/. 7. I imported the .debs into my private repository (managed by reprepro). 8. I installed grml-live. I created a new fai 'class', called EXTRANIC. This involved creating the following files: /etc/grml/fai/config/hooks/instsoft.EXTRANIC (mode 755): #!/bin/bash set -u set -e . The resulting image is larger than regular grml as it includes build-essential and its dependencies; if that's a problem, I suppose you can add a script after 50-dkms that purges now-unneeded packages. Incidentally, zfsonlinux can be added to grml in much the same way (that was the original point of the exercise for me). First Release Candidate of Grml version 2013.09 released

Hi, so we did it again, the first release candidate of the upcoming Grml version 2013.09, code-named 'Hefeknuddler' was released. This Grml release provides fresh software packages after the Debian stable release (AKA wheezy) has been released. As usual it also incorporates up2date hardware support and fixes known bugs from the previous Grml release. For detailed information about the changes between 2013.02 and 2013.09 have a look at the official release announcement: http://grml.org/changelogs/README-grml-2013.09-rc1/ Please test the ISOs and everything you usually use and report back so we can complete the stable release soon. J'ai l'inux nom de code Canterbury

Le projet "J'ai l'inux" vise à proposer une distribution Linux capable de filter les contenus notamment pornographiques, pour une utilisation à l'école. Pour filtrer les contenus, il est nécessaire d'intervenir à l'intérieur du système pour intercepter les contenus à filtrer (on ne peut pas intervenir au niveau des trames réseau car à ce niveau les contenus ne sont pas interpétables). J'ai pensé à utiliser des machines virtuelles pour déléguer à chaque machine virtuelle une portion spécifique du système à assurer. Cette idée est née d'un poisson d'avril (April's fool joke) qui annonçait le projet Canterbury, visant à réunir le meilleur de 5 distributions Linux dans une nouvelle distribution. En tant que chrétien, je suis très sensible aux poissons d'avril qui ont pour objectif de se moquer des chrétiens. J'ai donc choisi ces 5 distributions et j'ai fait un prototype de test 64 bits: - Archlinux pour l'interface homme-machine et la virtualisation - Gentoo pour la compilation - Grml pour les entrées-sorties - Open-Suse pour les applications - Debian pour les applications 32 bits et la modélisation L'idée sous-jacente à ce projet, c'est un module noyau à développer qui permettra de router les appels système vers chaque distribution en fonction du type d'appel système et du rôle de chaque distribution dans le système. Le pattern MVCA (Modèle= données, Vue=ihm, Controleur=noyau, Action=application) est utilisé entre Archlinux, Grml et OpenSuse. Le filtrage de contenu s'effectue entre les applications et les vues grâce au module noyau qui intercepte les données à filtrer et les dirige vers un filtreur hors noyau. Le filtreur applique des outils sur les données pour décider si elles seront autorisées ou non. Pour développer le filtreur, un nouveau langage, Pmal, est à créer. On a besoin d'un nouveau langage qui doit être capable de faire évoluer ses programmes sans avoir à les interrompre. Ce langage sera basé sur du typage fort, pour assurer la sécurité du système. J'ai imaginé un langage de glue pour faire ça. Il s'agit d'un langage qui fait un usage important de la réflexivité: il connait ses constituants et peut agir dessus. Il est basé sur le principe des conteneurs légers: les classes composantes sont assemblées par inversion de controle. Chaque composante ne connait pas avec quel composant il sera relié dans les conteneurs légers. Exemple: un objet A est relié à un objet de type D sur lequel il invoque une méthode b pour imprimer. A ne sait pas de quelle classe est l'objet de typez D. De D, 2 classes héritent: B et C, pour 2 imprimantes différentes. Chaque classe B et C possède un objet Méthode implémentant la méthode b. Cet objet Méthode porte des attributs "tags" qui le décrivent. Par exemple B a un tag "600dpi" et C a un tag "300dpi". Lorsque A demande a exécuter b, b est intercepté par le conteneur léger qui va filter les candidats possibles en fonction des tags. Finalement, le conteneur léger choisira B pour optimiser la qualité d'impression, sans que A se soit jamais douté de rien. On pourra aussi avoir un objet proxy qui intercepte les requêtes b et les envoie de manière asynchrone. Ou encore, un compteur d'appels de méthode incrémental pour détecter les boucles infinies et les résoudre en analysant le code invoqué et en proposant une approximation si elles tendent vers une limite. Par exemple on pourra résoudre le paradoxe de Zénon: Achille et la tortue font une course : Achille va 2 fois plus vite que la tortue. Chaque fois que Achille parcours la distance qui le sépare de la tortue, celle-ci parcours la moitié de cette distance. Ainsi une nouvelle distance plus petite les sépare... La récursion est infinie. Si on compte les appels récursifs avec une interruption par exemple au bout de 10 itérations, en analysant le code on peut déduire que la limite tend vers 0 et retourner cette réponse comme approximation et mettre fin à la boucle. Si il n'y a pas de limite on interrompra aussi la boucle pour éviter un engorgement système. Avec le niveau d'abstraction où une méthode est un objet on pour attacher cette méthode à un seul objet sans l'attacher à tous les objets de sa classe, à des fins de tests. Une fois testée, cette méthode pourra être généralisée à toute la classe. A ce moment, la méthode sera interceptée par un proxy, puis mise en place, puis activée en débloquant le proxy, permettant ainsi une évolution du code et des classes du programme sans interruption. De plus, bien que fortement typé, ce langage pourra être exécuté par du javascript, du fait de son niveau d'abstraction : les objets, les classes, les attributs et les méthodes sont tous des objets manipulables. Actuellement, je dispose d'un prototype faisant fonctionner les 5 distributions ensemble. J'ai presque terminé le compilateur pour les méthodes du langage en Java 1.5. Il faut développer l'ensemble du langage Pmal, le module du noyau pour router les appels système et aussi un gestionnaire de paquets pour l'ensemble du système avec les 5 distributions. I made tests using grml 2013.09-rc1 32bits and 64bits versions using boot options for work with brazilian portuguese keyboard layouts abnt and abnt2. at grml boot press (key tab) and add following options: xkeyboard=br lang=br tz=America/Sao_Paulo After this quick boot if you choose q (you go to terminal session with correct keyboard layout for computers sold here in Brazil that use abnt/abnt2 layout. If you choose x (for graphics options) xkeyboard brings rigth keyboard map for work with iceweasel (firefox) browser, (like chars /, :, ", '). Need to unmap an alias in /etc/zsh/zshrc without modifying that file

I'm using the grml-zsh-config package for Arch Linux. It places /etc/zsh/zshrc from grml upstream which contains an offending line: alias j='jobs -l' The strategy as I understand it is NOT to modify /etc/zsh/zshrc but rather to modify ~/.zshrc.local which I do have. My question is how can I unmap that alias in my ~/.zshrc.local leaving /etc/zsh/zshrc untouched? Btw, there is a great piece of software called autojump that works when users invoke the 'j' key which is why I want to unmap this. Thank you.

Remastering GRML for blind users

Not clear about what the following line means: scripts => run script DCSDIR/scripts/grml.sh - does this mean that the /scripts/grml.sh must be in the root directory of the cd iso or usb flashdrive - not clear from the documentation where the DCSDIR is by default??? Facing issues in setting up persistency. Using the grml-rescueboot option

Hello, This is my third attempt at getting grml to run persistently. Previous attempts used grml2usb to install it in tandem with other OSs, first using the grub, and subsequently syslinux. Both attempts ended badly. So, the third time, it was decided to opt for the option, grml-rescueboot to get things going. 0. Get a working Linux Mint system (extended partition sdX5). fdisk -l output is provided below. 1. Copied the grml64.iso into /boot/grml 2. Set up a separate partition called grml-home ( ---"--"--- sdX10) for persistence. 3. Created persistence.conf in the / of grml-home and added all the paths as prescribed in the wiki. 4. Having already installed the grml-rescueboot package, running update-grub added the iso into the menu. 5. Reboot, and choose grml64.iso 6. In the subsequent menu, chose the persistence option 7. Was provided with the following (approximately): > BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/grml64full/vmlinuz apm=power-off boot=live > live-media-path=/live/grml64-full/ bootid=grml64full201302 nomce > findiso=/boot/grml/grml64-full_2013.02.iso "${loopback}" "$kernelopts" > persistence > 8. Hi, at first thanks for the good work. in my oppinion you offer the best linux live cd. but i have one thing to inprove: at your download site is written that the multiarch download size is 700MB. RC: disable zshrc's share_history feature by default?

Hi, Grml's zshrc [http://grml.org/zsh/] uses 'setopt share_history' by default since ages. This option is responsible for making the history of one Zsh session available to others "kind-of-immediately". So when sending 'echo foobar' in one terminal, then pressing e.g. <return> in another zsh session of the same user then cursor up will show 'echo foobar' on the command line. While I personally like the feature and somewhat got used to it it's also one of the most discussed settings of grml-zshrc. It has the potential to do harm, especially if you aren't aware of that feature. This is why I'd like to disable this setting by default (but provide it as commented feature so it's trivial to just enable it on request). Of course you will be able to just customize it via e.g. .zshrc.local, it's really just about the default behaviour. Any objections against that switch? Happy to hear your {N,}ACKs. :) regards, -mika-

Persistence not working

Hello all, I cannot get persistency to work with grml 2013.02. I'm creating a live USB stick using grml2usb installed on my Debian Wheezy machine. Per the wiki, I create a 700 MB fat16 partition for grml and give the remaining space as an ext3 partition labeled "persistence". On the persistence partition is persistence.conf setup per the wiki. I execute grml2usb either with --bootoptions="persistence" or by choosing persistence from the menu at boot (same result). When booting, here's what I see on the screen: mount: mounting /dev/sda on /root/lib/live/mount/persistence/sda failed: No such device [...snip...scans sdb sdc] later I get: mounting /live/medium on /root/lib/live/mount/medium failed: Invalid argument and later: Mount point '/root/lib/live/mount/persistence/sdb1' does not exist. Skipping mount ... Am I doing something wrong somewhere in this process? If not, is there a work-around that I can use? Thank you! Josh -- Josh Lawrence

No dump/restore in the default images?

Hello, hopefully it's not a FAQ, but at least using a major search engine didn't give me a useful pointer … From the default GRML image (2013-02) I'm missing the dump package. This package contains dump(8) and restore(8) for ext{2,3,4} file systems. Probaby using dump(8) is not really necessary, but using restore(8) is my only option sometimes. Having amanda would be great too … Is there anything I can do to get these packages into GRML? This release brings the Grml tools towards the upcoming Debian stable release (AKA wheezy), provides up2date hardware support and fixes known bugs from the previous Grml release. A Debian derivative, run by most people inside Virtual Box. grml-debootstrap is used to create the .img files with the operating system packages. How can I change the path for /etc/debootstrap/etc/apt/sources.list to /home/user/something? If that's not possible yet, I am missing that command line option. Running scripts inside the image doesn't work reliable to me. I mean, there are no bugs, it works, creating the image with many packages takes too long and I tend to have small mistakes in my scripts and if I want to debug my chroot script, I really can't afford recreating the whole image. It takes too long. So I created half of the stuff myself, which I am missing in grml-debootstrap, but unfortunately paths are hardcoded for Whonix. * (un)mount the image. Could look like this: grml-debootstrap --mount /path/to/vm.img --to /tmp/mounted And then "cd /tmp/mounted" and look arround in the image, perhaps change a few things. After being done: grml-debootstrap --unmount /tmp/mounted * Run scripts inside the image without re-creating the image. Mouting an image, chrooting the image, running a script inside the image, unchrooting and unmounting. Could look like this: grml-debootstrap --mount /path/to/vm.img --run /path/to/script.sh * Mount the image interactively. Could look like this: grml-debootstrap --interactive /path/to/vm.img grml-debootstrap could mount the image, chroot into it, open a bash shell and upon exit the bash shell, unchroot and unmount. Also mounting user defined files/folders inside chroot would be necessary. * support for .vdi and .vmdk image creation * maybe a bit far fetched: creation of Virtual Box, Qubes OS etc. virtual machine description files, .ova format, which can be deployed and imported into Virtualizers * Ubuntu support (or can it be already build from Debian?) * built in support for using apt-cacher-ng to speed up re-creating of images * a tool for installing "normal" Debian on an encrypted (USB) harddisk - Ask for which hdd to use. - Focus on external hdds. - Format the hdd. - Partition the hdd. (Personally prefer a single partition and not using extra swap partition, but a swap file instead.) - Encrypt everything, but boot, including swap using cryptsetup/dm-crypt. - Install a "normal" (fully persistent) Debian to USB using debootstrap/chroot. ("Normal" as in if you used a Debian installer CD to install to hdd.) - Allow to mount/chroot the encrypted hdd if the password is given, so extra files can be copied and extra scripts can be applied.
