Hello and thank you to the grml team. With the help of a friend here I have grml running nicely on a pendrive, I was even fortunate enough to have a laptop that had 1 of 3 supported wireless cards, just have to tpe dhclient and speechd-up after bootup How much like a normal linux install is grml now that I have it running on a pendrive. Have any users tried installing extra packages? Maybe we could consider a larger image specifically for pendrive users with more programs installed. Have a question though, How can I change the keyboard to Dvorak. Keep up the good work maybe after I learn linux I might have more constructive things to say. (Backup your ~/.muttrc first to make sure you don't overwrite anything.) To send mail take a look at msmtp, a sample configuration file is shipped with grml: ~/.msmtprc Filter your mail using procmail. It requires some scripting work to get only security related packages in Debian unstable, that's difficult by design. > - perhaps a way to (re)compile the kernel on a user-friendly based system? Don't compile the kernel on your own unless you have a *really* good reason to do that. That's the work of the distributor, not really an end-user task with kernel 2.6. As the manpage of rebuildfstab says: rebuildfstab uses the tool scanpartition to scan for devices located in /dev and adds entries for devices / partitions which are not available in /etc/fstab yet. It does not mount any partitions automatically. If you want to use /dev/hda2 as your home partition, take the entry for /dev/hda2 from /etc/fstab and move it to the top of the /etc/fstab. *Everything* below the "warning-line" will be deleted by next run of rebuildfstab. If you don't want the rebuildfstab feature set CONFIG_FSTAB='no' in /etc/grml/autoconfig. Sorry, that's not an option for me. Just run 'apt-get remove xserver-xorg' to remove the X-window system on your installation. grml-0.6 kernel recompile qustion

Finally took the plunge to compile SMP kernel. downloaded the vanilla linux-2.6.25 sources from ftp.kernel.org downloaded the all-in-one-patch from grml.org applied the patches (no failures seen) compiled the kernel with the commandi (in source directory): fakeroot make-kpkg clean fakeroot make-kpkg -append-to-version="-smp" kernel-image modules-image compiles with quite few warnings (too many to list) and creates .deb file installed the .deb file with dpkg -i (system does boot with -smp kernel..) I have a question on entries in /lib/modules/2.6.15-grml-smp some directory entries that exist in /lib/modules/2.6.15-grml (drivers, extra, net etc.) are not created in /lib/modules/2.6.15-grml-smp (only kernel directory is cerated) Is it normal? Is the -smp kernel using some modules from /lib/modules/2.6.15-grml or did I make the kernel/modules wrong? -ishwar

JFYI: If you are using a harddisk installation of grml and update your box(es) you'll notice problems with debconf, e.g.: | dpkg: error processing debconf (--configure): | subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1 The problem has been forwarded to upstream: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=351031 We are not yet sure what's the exact problem (have to investigate on it). print is too small

My father was helping me set up Grml and he told me that the print was too small. How is this enlarged? I haven't messed with this because since I use speech 3/4 of the time I don't need the screen. grml-x glitches

I tested the FAQ advice about grml-x and nvidia. The simple command was grml-x -nostart -module nvidia gdm If I run as root, I get a strong warning message that grml-x does not support root. (P.S. Why not?) If I run as a non-root user, I get error messages about the user lacking privileges to run certain binaries. Mark

Grml-0.6 does not detect the second processor by default. How difficult it is to build SMP kernel? Just take the available source and recompile with SMP option or moduls also have to be rebuilt? -ishwar

"speakwith" script

Hi people, I think I just sent a private message which ought to have gone to the list. I have been using a script called "speakwith" which takes as an argument a synth name as defined by speakup, including none, sftsyn, and all the HW synth names. It assumes speech-dispatcher has already been run, but that could easily be modified if anyone wants to do that. I place it in /usr/local/sbin so that it must be run as root. It works great for me, and might be useful as an add-on to grml. The script is available from: http://www.mhcable.com/~chuckh/speakwith It is pretty well documented. Oh yes, I should mention that at the end of the script it invokes "speakupconf load" to restore synth settings Thant have been saved with that utility, available in the speakup source directory somewhere. nVidia video hardware autodetection bug

OK, I followed the advice and just tried it on a spare user machine. apt-get install nvidia-kernel-2.6.15-grml That much worked but was not the whole story. Hardware autodetection of the nVidia card seems to be a problem. My current impression is that GRML does not detect it or set it up properly. At boot time, grml-x creates /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Now as a test, I ran nvidia-xconfig by hand, which creates its own /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Then I rebooted. That didn't work. When I rebooted, X would not start properly. So I fell back to the old xorg.conf. Even though nVidia drivers are installed, GRML 0.6-1 hardware autodetection fails to use them. Hence it could be considered a bug or missing feature in the hardware autodetection. Hardware autodetection is the reason I use GRML, and it has the best I have seen, don't get me wrong. There may well be something I am doing wrong, please forgive me if I seem obtuse or dumb, I just report what I see in terms that I understand. Thanks, Mark

speech script for grml

Hi Mica and list, Got the speech working well. Now I have one question. I have a script for making Speakup talk. I get as far as speech dispatcher and then it peeters out. How do I tell Zsh to sleep or wait a few seconds before envoking the rest of the command. Also is there any special syntax I must use to echo the synth-name to /proc/speakup/synth_name in this script? This will also hold my prefered speech settings also. I did do a chmod 777 to this file which is located in /usr/bin/sws. still having problems with software speech on Grml

Hello lists, I am still having problems with Speakup on Grml. I did the following: "echo sftsyn > /proc/speakup/synthname" and then I did: "speechd-up" this did not start the synth talking. I have 128Mb of memory on the Toshiba laptop with a 512Mb swap partition. Any ideas as to why this won't work? nVidia in a boot anywhere system

GRML 0.6-1 and GNOME 2.12 on a portable USB drive. It must boot "any" PC. About installing nVidia. Is it dangerous for this user scenario? Will such a system ONLY boot machines that have nVidia cards, or "any" PC? List exact steps to get nVidia support. GRML repository has nVidia stuff but kernel replacement has me worried. Better safe than sorry...so I ask questions. Thanks for the advice. Mark

grml and forensics

Hello, I'm in a college computer forensics class. The students are all using the nopix helix live cd and most of the tools are gui. Was wondering what grml had for forensics, or what some users have done in that area. I'm hoping grml on a pendrive so i can install additional packages is a good solution. Pendrive problems, I bought the sandisc minicruiser and found they have a hidden partition with their launchpad program so you cant boot into grml from the drive. Have any users had this problem? Also, how can I make the grml live cd boot up talking with software speech without entering the bootup options? With nopix becomming so popular among computer professionals, it's great to see grml providing similar capabilities to blind users. Kevin

Hello guys and gals, Got a good one for ya. I am trying to get Grml coming up with braille. The line I type in is this "grml brltty=fs,usb:,nabcc" and the only thing I recieve is the fact that the Braille display is a 20 c cell display. It is the Fs Pacmate display I am wanting to use. As you can tell it is Usb. Any help would be greatfully appreciated. having trouble getting GRML small working on a note book

Hello there, I am trying to get grml small to work on a note book using the grml blind command. However, as soon as the cd boots up I get an error beep from the note book. The notebook is a Toshiba don't remember the model right off hand.
