Lieber Userin!

Wie Dir sicher aufgefallen ist hat die Menge an SPAM in den letzten
Wochen/Monaten drastisch zugenommen. mur.at versucht das SPAM Aufkommen mit
zwei verschiedenen Methoden (Inhalt Filterung und RBL) zu reduzieren. Der
zweite Mechanismus kann manchmal die Zustellung von legitimer Email
verhindern, was in letzter Zeit zu einigen Beschwerden führte.

RBLs (RealtimeBlackholeListen) werden benutzt IP Adressen zu finden, die in
den letzten Tagen/Wochen erwiesenermassen SPAM verschickt haben. Jedes mal
wenn einer unserer mailserver Email von einer IP bekommt, die er in einer
RBL findet, lehnt er die Annahme der Email ab und schickt ein Email an
die/den Absenderin mit einer Eklärung für die Ablehnung. Das heisst nicht
dass diese Email SPAM ist! Der Server verschickt eine relativ genaue
Nachricht, die auch einen URL zu einer Website mit genaueren Erklärungen
enthält. Diese Website erzeugt auch einen Link zur Website der RBL die die
betreffende IP blockierte wo sich meist noch weitere Informationen (meistens
der Grund der Blockade und manchmal 'sample traffic' von sogenanntnen 'spam
traps') finden.

Unserer Meinung nach ist die einzig korrekte Reaktion auf eine abgelehnte
Email-Zustellung den verantwortlichen Provider zu ersuchen dass

- er Massnahmen ergreift um die IP Blockade aufzuheben
- er Massnahmen ergreift dass sowas in Zukunft nicht mehr passiert.

Du kannst den Leuten die Schwierigkeiten haben mail an mur.at Adressen zu
schicken auch sagen, dass sie die SMTP Server ihres Providers benutzen
sollen. Wir versuchen eine aktuelle Liste von bekannten SMTP Servern zu
führen, die regelmässig Email an uns schicken und akzeptieren Email von
diesen.

Alle Massnahmen die wir gegen SPAM setzen dienen dazu, Deine Inbox so gut
als möglich frei von SPAM zu halten. Wir schätzen dass wir zur Zeit rund 40%
bis 50% des eingehenden SPAMs als solchen erkennen und dementsprechend
markieren. Der RBL Mechanismus lehnt pro Woche rund 5000 bis 6000 mails ab.

Dear User!

As you probably noticed the amount of SPAM has increased drastically within
the last weeks/months. mur.at is trying to reduce the amount of SPAM using
two different aproaches (content filtering and RBL). The second mechanism in
question can sometimes block legitimate Email from being sent to mur.at
addresses which lead to some complaints lately.

RBLs (RealtimeBlackholeLists) are used to identify IP-Addresses that are
known to have sent SPAM during the past days/weeks. Every time one of our
mailservers receives Email from an IP found in an RBL it rejects this Email
and sends the sender a message telling her/him WHY it rejected the message.
This does NOT mean that the message was SPAM! The server sends a relatively
precise message that contains a URL pointing to a website which tries to
explain WHY the mail was rejected. This website also creates a link to the
page of the RBL that blocked the IP where further information can be found
(mainly the reason why the IP was blocked and sometimes 'sample traffic'
taken from so called 'spam traps'.

In our opinion the only correct way to deal with a rejected message is to
ask the provider that is responisble for the IP address to

- take measures that the IP will be removed from the RBL
- take measures that this will not happen again in the future.

One thing you can also tell people that have troubles sending mail is to use
the SMTP server of their provider. We try to keep a list of known SMTP
servers that frequently send Email accept mail from these.

All these measures against SPAM are meant to keep your inbox as SPAM free as
possible. We estimate that at the moment we find and tag about 40% to 50% of
incoming SPAM. The RBL mechanism rejects about 5000 to 6000 mails every
weeks.
