Reader „The only performances that make it all the way... Yes, but is it performable?"
In Ashley Hans Scheirls „life art“ steht das Hinterfragen von gesellschaftlichen Normen und Verhältnissen sowie die Weiterentwicklung des Umgangs mit der eigenen Identität und Sexualität im Zentrum ihrer oft medienübergreifenden Arbeiten. Dabei steht die Verschränkung von Biographie und Kunst, die Frage nach der eigenen Identität, das Überwinden von Geschlechter- und Genregrenzen zur Disposition. Scheirl, die laut Eigendefinition „Trans-(-media, -genre, -gender)Künstler_in“ ist, wechselt gekonnt zwischen den Formaten aus Malerei, Zeichnung, Skulptur, Film, Video und Performance, ohne sich auf bestimmte Klassifizierungen einzulassen. Für ihre bislang größte institutionelle Einzelausstellung im Grazer Künstlerhaus – Halle für Kunst & Medien präsentiert Ashley Hans Scheirl (*1956 Salzburg, lebt in Wien) eine in sich schlüssige Auswahl bestehender Arbeiten und einen neuen Werkkomplex, basierend auf zum Teil für die Ausstellung ortsspezifisch angefertigten Malereien und Objekten.
Die Ausstellung wird von einem Rahmenprogramm, Beiträgen auf der Online-Publikationsplattform des Künstlerhauses (journal.km-k.at) und einem Katalog begleitet, der in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Salzburger Kunstverein und mit Unterstützung von „Kontakt. Art Collection – Erste Group / ERSTE Foundation“ entsteht.

Wir leben in unübersichtlichen und durchaus komplexen Zeiten. In einem für beide Länder so wichtigen gemeinsamen Europa verbinden Polen und Österreich ein reiches kulturelles Leben, das sich aus einem spezifischen und teils ähnlichen historischen Bewusstsein und einem darauf aufbauenden traditionsorientierten Weltbild speist. Wie funktionieren darin Kunst und Kultur? Was soll Zeitgeist sein? Wie bringen sich die davon angesprochenen Personen ein, von welchen Personen sprechen wir? Und schließlich: Wie kann ein Kunst- und Kulturinstitut diese Werte und Ansprüche im Sinne eines produktiven Austauschs und guter Nachbarschaft vermitteln? Darauf geben die Künstler_innen Tymek Borowski und Maruša Sagadin einige pointierte Antworten.

In Ashley Hans Scheirl’s “life art,” questioning social norms and relationships and developing one’s approach to one’s own identity and sexuality are at the center of her often multimedia works. The intertwining of biography and art, the question of one’s own identity, crossing boundaries of gender and genre are options. Scheirl, who is, by her own account, a “trans(-media, -genre, -gender) artist,” deftly changes between formats from painting, drawing, sculpture, film, video, and performance without admitting of specific classifications. For her largest solo exhibition in an institution thus far, at the Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien in Graz, Ashley Hans Scheirl (b. 1956 in Salzburg, lives in Vienna) is presenting a coherent selection of existing works and a new complex of works based in part on site-specific paintings and objects produced for this exhibition.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a supporting program, essays on the Künstlerhaus’s online publication platform (journal.km-k.at) and by a catalog produced in collaboration with the Salzburger Kunstverein with support from the Kontakt. Art Collection – Erste Group / ERSTE Foundation.”

We live in confusing and certainly complex times. In a common Europe so important for both countries, Poland and Austria are linked by a rich cultural life that draws on a specific and in part similar historical awareness and a tradition-based picture of the world that is built on that. How do are and culture work? What is the zeitgeist supposed to be? What contribution do the persons addressed by it make, which subjects are we talking about? And finally: How can an art and cultural institution convey these values and ambitions in the spirit of a productive exchange and good neighborliness? The artists Tymek Borowski and Maruša Sagadin offer several pointed answers to these questions.
