Am 7. Dezember um 19 Uhr laden wir sehr herzlich zur Ausstellungseröffnung von „Stuart Middleton. Motivation and Personality"  in das Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien in Graz ein. Im Anschluss daran gibt es Drinks und Musik mit der Grrrls DJ Crew.

Die Ausstellung „Motivation and Personality“ des britischen Künstlers Stuart Middleton (*1987 Crewe, UK, lebt in Glasgow) präsentiert eine neu produzierte raumgreifende Installation, welche die formative Kraft des sozialen Umfelds und das zerstörerische Potential von zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen untersucht. Durch eine thematische Kombination der Grundlagen der Verhaltensforschung bei Tieren, Technologien der Fleischverarbeitung und Theorien der Human-Psychologie realisiert Middleton eine skulpturale Arbeit, die an eine experimentelle Maschinerie erinnert. Seine begehbare Installation vermag es, das Publikum nicht nur auf intellektueller, sondern auch auf körperlicher Ebene anzusprechen und soll die Besucher_innen, der Biologie der Wiederkäuer entsprechend, in sich aufnehmen und „bearbeiten“.

Stuart Middleton arbeitet dabei transdisziplinär und ortsspezifisch. Seine Interventionen, die zwischen Installation und Skulptur schwanken, sind immer in Bezug zu anderen Medien, wie Animation, Zeichnung und Literatur erdacht. Für die Ausstellung im Untergeschoss des Künstlerhauses wird ein originalgetreuer Nachbau eines „Livestock Handling Systems” eines Leitsystems zum Management und zur Abfertigung von Nutztieren errichtet, nach einem Entwurf von Dr. Temple Grandin, Professorin für Tierwissenschaften an der Colorado State University. Die Replik wird die Maße eines operativen Schlachthauses aus England verwenden.

Die Ausstellung im Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien in Graz ist Stuart Middletons erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung im deutschsprachigen Raum und zeigt durchgehend neue Produktionen. Middleton absolvierte die Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main (2016) und das Camberwell College of Art, London (2009). Anlässlich der Absolventenausstellung „Croissant“ im Museum für Moderne Kunst (Frankfurt am Main, 2016) erhielt er den Preis des Städelschule Portikus e.V.. Seine Arbeiten waren zuletzt in Einzelausstellungen am ICA (London, UK), bei Tramway (Glasgow, UK) und Carlos Ishikawa (London, UK) sowie Gruppenausstellungen im Camden Arts Centre (London, UK), Kunsthaus Glarus (CH) und bei Schiefe Zähne (Berlin, DE) zu sehen.

Stuart Middletons Ausstellung „Motivation and Personality“ wird von einem vielseitigen Veranstaltungs- und Vermittlungsprogramm gerahmt: Zur feierlichen Eröffnung am 07.12.2018 um 19 Uhr nimmt die „Grrrls DJ Crew“ aus Graz die „Decks“ im Künstlerhaus ab 20 Uhr in Beschlag. Anschließend kommt es gemeinsam mit den zeitgleich eröffnenden Institutionen Camera Austria, Grazer Kunstverein und < rotor > zur CMRK After Party in der benachbarten Lokalität Kombüse.

Im Rahmen eines Künstlergesprächs wird Stuart Middleton am 08.12.2018 um 14 Uhr mit dem Direktor des Künstlerhauses, Halle für Kunst & Medien, und Kurator der Ausstellung Sandro Droschl durch die Ausstellung führen und auch über frühere Arbeiten berichten.

The exhibition “Motivation and Personality” of British artist Stuart Middleton (*1987 Crewe, UK, lives in Glasgow) shows an original space-encompassing installation which considers the formative power of social environments and the consumptive potential of relationships. Mashing together ideas from animal behavioral science, meat production-line technology and human psychology, Middleton creates an experimental, sculptural machinery for Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien. Middleton’s walk-in-installation touches the audience not only on the intellectual, but also on the physical level and, following the biology of the ruminant, should even “digest” them.

Stuart Middleton works in a transdisciplinary and site-specific way. His interventions, which hover between installation and sculpture, are always conceived in relation to other media such as animation, drawing and fiction writing. For the exhibition in the lower level exhibition space of the Künstlerhaus, Middleton will construct a full scale replica of a “Livestock Handling System” designed by Dr. Temple Grandin, professor of animal science at Colorado State University and consultant to the livestock industry on animal behavior. The replica will use measurements taken from an operational slaughterhouse in the United Kingdom.

The exhibition at Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien in Graz will be Stuart Middleton's first solo exhibition in the German-speaking region and presents new works throughout. Middleton graduated from the Städelschule in Frankfurt on the Main (2016) and Camberwell College of Art, London (2009). On the occasion of the graduate exhibition “Croissant” at MMK – Museum für Moderne Kunst (Frankfurt on the Main, 2016), Middleton received the graduate award of the Städelschule Portikus e.V.. His work has been recently exhibited in solo exhibitions at the ICA (London, UK), Tramway (Glasgow, UK) and Carlos Ishikawa (London, UK) and group exhibitions at Camden Arts Centre (London, UK), Kunsthaus Glarus (CH) and Schiefe Zähne (Berlin, DE).

Stuart Middleton’s exhibition “Motivation and Personality” will be accompanied by a diverse supporting program. At the festive opening on December 7, 2018, the Grrrls DJ Crew from Graz will be on the decks, starting at 8 p.m.. Afterwards, there will be the CMRK after party at the neighboring locality Kombüse with the institutions Camera Austria, Grazer Kunstverein and < rotor >, which open at the same night.

As part of an artist talk on the December 8, 2018 at 2 p.m., Stuart Middleton and the director of the Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien and curator of the exhibition, Sandro Droschl, will guide through the exhibition and talk about earlier works.
