impuls – 1998 von Beat Furrer und Ernst Kovacic in Graz/Österreich gegründet – steht für Vermittlung zeitgenössischer Musik. Durch die internationale impuls-Akademie, den impuls-Kompositionswettbewerb sowie Konzerte und vielfältige Musikvermittlungsprogramme bietet impuls hochqualitative Angebote für MusikerInnen und KomponistInnen, aber auch für Hörerinnen und Hörer:

Instrumentalunterricht und Ensemblespiel, Kompositionsklassen und Spezialprogramme wie Ensemble meets Composers, Leseproben mit dem Klangforum Wien und Improvisationsworkshops … Über zwei Wochen bietet impuls mit seinem renommierten, internationalen Dozententeam (u. a. Beat Furrer, Olga Neuwirth, Ernesto Molinari, Ian Pace, Marcus Weiss …) auch 2009 wieder MusikerInnen und KomponistInnen aus der ganzen Welt auf vielfältigste Weise einen intensiven Zugang zu zeitgenössischer Musik und schafft in Ausbildung und Praxis für TeilnehmerInnen aus der ganzen Welt eine wichtige Austausch- und Arbeitsplattform in Graz, Österreich.

Des weiteren ist derzeit auch der impuls-Kompositionswettbewerb für junge KomponistInnen (ab Jahrgang 1975) ausgeschrieben, der mit Kompositionsaufträgen, einem Kompositionsworkshop und Uraufführungen bei impuls 2011 verknüpft ist.

Gesprächs- und moderierte Konzerte, lectures und impuls-Referate, ein Galerienrundgang mit Impulskonzerten sowie der impuls-2009-Eröffnungsabend mit den vier impuls-Kompositionswettbewerbspreisträgern (14.2.2009, Helmut-List-Halle Graz, Klangforum Wien unter Enno Poppe: Uraufführungen von Oscar Bianchi, Marianthi Papalexandri-Alexandri, Hèctor Parra, Djuro Zivkovic) lassen Graz darüber hinaus auch für ein Publikum mit open ears zu einer Heimstätte und einem Zentrum der zeitgenössischen Musik werden.

impuls . Internationaler Kompositionswettbewerb / composition-competition

impuls promotes and supports young composers not only within its Academy, but also through the impuls Composition Workshop and impuls Composition Competition. 
impuls commissions up to 6 new works for ensemble every second year from composers selected by a jury. Subsequently the composers are invited to the impuls Composition Workshop – where their new works are rehearsed and discussed extensively with musicians of world-class ensembles such as Klangforum Wien– as well as to the première of their new pieces within the impuls Academy in Graz. impuls also intends to support the composers´ works beyond that through recordings respectively broadcasting, additional concerts etc. 



impuls is now calling for entries for its Composition Competition.

impuls will commission four new works for ensemble the upcoming year. The selected composers will be invited to the impuls Composition Workshop 2011 and the première of their works within impuls 2011 in Graz.

 

Conditions impuls Composition Competition:

1.) The impuls Composition Competition is an international competition.

2.) Applying composers must not be born before 1975.

3.) Application starts on May 30th, 2008 and ends on November 30th, 2008.

4.) A jury consisting of composers, musicians and experts (amongst them Beat Furrer, Ernst Kovacic and two members of Klangforum Wien) will nominate 4 composers. 

The jury´s decision will be published by the end of March 2009 (www.impuls.cc).

5.) As part of the impuls Composition Competition, impuls will commission 4 new works for ensemble (10-17 musicians – exact instrumentation will be named by commission, length: 15-20 minutes; due to September 2010) and invite the selected composers to take part in the impuls Composition Workshop 2011, including extensive rehearsals, different accompanying activities (lectures, interviews …) and to attend the première of their works with a first-class ensemble (such as Klangforum Wien) within impuls 2011.

6.) The selected composers will be offered by impuls: 
a.) travel expenses (within Europe: economy flight or second-class rail ticket, whichever is the cheaper; from overseas: a contribution up to a maximum of € 500,-)
b.) living expenses: hotel plus per diem of € 30.- (throughout the duration of the workshop and day of first performance)
c.) Upon delivery of the score and the complete musical material – by the deadlines given – the composers will receive a one-time payment of € 2.000,00. With this payment all rights concerning the public performance within impuls 2011, the live recording and broadcasting as well as the publishing of a CD are compensated. 
7.) Due to the great number of applications the submitted copies of scores will not be returned. Upon submittal, the ownership of all application materials is transferred to impuls.

8.) It will not be possible to appeal against the jury´s decision in a court of law. No correspondence will be conducted regarding the decision.

9.) In submitting their entries to impuls all applicants agree to abide by the conditions set out above. The selection is subject to the law of the Republic of Austria. Should any single condition of the proposed competition be invalid, no other condition shall be automatically invalidated (salvatory clause).

Applications for the impuls Composition Competition must include:
a.) completed online registration form (www.impuls.cc)

b.) full name / date and place of birth / postal and e-mail addresses, telephone numbers

c.) one preferably current, representative score (no solo-works accepted, at least chamber-music respectively work for ensemble or orchestra). Please hand in the score in duplicate (if possible one digital version).

d.) biography, a list of repertoire and current activities

e.) a commentary on the piece, including its title, instrumentation and duration
f.) a concept for a new piece for ensemble

g.) facultatively recordings 
h.) applications must not arrive later than November 30th, 2008 at the following address:
