/Why Listening?//Klanginstallation Lorenzo Orsenigo/

Eine Interpretation von Vinko Globokars /?Corpore//I/ (1985) durch 
Pauline Oliveros' /meditations/(1971 - 2016)

Globokars und Oliveros' /Erkundungen des Körpers als Instrument/ zeigen 
den menschlichen Körper sowohl als wunderbar einzigartig als auch als 
von Natur aus universell. Während Globokars /?Corporel/ — eines der 
ersten Stücke, die jemals für "einen Schlagzeuger auf seinem Körper" 
komponiert wurden, um den Komponisten selbst zu zitieren — die 
eigentümlichen Klänge erforscht, die durch Gesten wie das Schlagen, 
Kratzen oder Intonieren eines Körpers erzeugt werden können, 
konzentrieren sich Oliveros' /meditations/ auf die Teilnehmer:innen 
selbst und laden sie ein, auf das zu hören und zu erfahren, was im 
Inneren (und auch im Äußeren) ist, und darauf durch Klang zu reagieren 
und so ihre Einzigartigkeit zum Ausdruck zu bringen.
Im Rahmen seines Doktorats am Institut für Elektronische Musik in Graz 
setzt sich der Schlagzeuger Lorenzo Orsenigo mit der Idee des "Hacking" 
von Werken auseinander, also eine Methode, die zwar noch von der Idee 
der "Interpretation" eines Werks ausgeht, sich dabei aber erlaubt 
kreativ gestaltend in die Werke einzugreifen. Der Eintritt ist frei.

Dem Rauschen eines Flusses lauscht ein neuronales Netz und erkennt darin 
Fragmente menschlicher Sprache. In /Parlando/ wird das animistische 
Ritual, dem Fluss zuzuhören, wird von einer Spracherkennungsmaschine 
(Deep Learning) übernommen. Aus dem Fluss der Worte, die aus den Klängen 
und Geräuschen des Wassers „gelesen“ werden, entsteht ein neuer, 
eigenständiger Text.

In /Parlando/ sind die Grenzen der KI (die aufgrund ihrer Programmierung 
in allem Sprache sucht und findet) die treibende Kraft hinter der 
künstlich-poetischen Textkreation. Indem das Rauschen des Flusses als 
menschliche Stimme interpretiert wird, wird es tatsächlich zum Text und 
zur vermeintlich versteckten Botschaft des gluckernd-parlierenden Wassers.

An interpretation of Vinko Globokar's CorporeI (1985) through Pauline 
Oliveros' meditations (1971 - 2016)

Globokar's and Oliveros' explorations of the body as instrument show the 
human body as both wonderfully unique and inherently universal. While 
Globokars' Corporel - one of the first pieces ever composed for “a 
percussionist on his body”, to quote the composer himself - explores the 
peculiar sounds that can be produced by gestures such as striking, 
scratching or intoning a body, Oliveros' meditations focus on the 
participants themselves, inviting them to listen to and experience what 
is inside (and also outside) and to respond to it through sound, thus 
expressing their uniqueness.
As part of his doctorate at the Institute for Electronic Music in Graz, 
percussionist Lorenzo Orsenigo is exploring the idea of “hacking” works, 
i.e. a method that is still based on the idea of “interpreting” a work, 
but allows itself to intervene creatively in the works. Admission is free.

PARLANDO

Ulla Rauter (AUT)

A neural network listens to the sound of a river and recognizes 
fragments of human speech. In Parlando, the animistic ritual of 
listening to the river is taken over by a speech recognition machine 
(deep learning). A new, independent text is created from the flow of 
words that are “read” from the sounds and noises of the water.

In Parlando, the limits of AI (which, due to its programming, searches 
for and finds language in everything) are the driving force behind the 
artificially poetic text creation. By interpreting the murmur of the 
river as a human voice, it actually becomes a text and the supposedly 
hidden message of the gurgling, parading water.
