Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

das esc medien kunst labor beteiligt sich auch heuer wieder am 
Programmvon *ORF Lange Nacht der Museen*. Unsere Ausstellung /EMPATHY 
SWARM, CURIOUS TAUTOPHONE AND DR. DOPPLERS MACHINE/ ist am Samstag, 
5.10.2019 von 18.00 bis 01.00 Uhr geöffnet.
Die KünstlerInnen Katrin Hochschuh und Adam Donovan zeigen um 20.00 Uhr 
eine /Robotic Performance/ (ORF musikprotokoll Spezial).
Wir laden Sie herzlich zu persönlichen Gesprächen mit Katrin Hochschuh 
und Adam Donovan und unseren Führungen durch die Ausstellung ein.
Ausserdem weisen wir nochmals auf die Konzert-Performance 
/Psychophsysics Machines/ von Katrin Hochschuh und Adam Donovan im 
Rahmen von ORF musikprotokoll 2019 am Freitag, 4.10.2019 um 18.00 Uhr hin.

*/Psychophysics Machines/***ist eine Performance mit klanggenerierenden 
robotischen Apparaturen, in deren Verlauf unsere auditive 
Wahrnehmungsmaschinerie hinterfragt und gleichzeitig hypersensibilisiert 
wird, sodass sich neue Dimensionen des Hörens auftun. Im Wesentlichen 
geht es um eine transformative Erfahrung, die nur im Hier und Jetzt 
gemacht werden kann ‒ als würden uns die Roboter gleichsam in eine 
andere, fremde Welt versetzen, indem sie bestimmte (akustische) 
physikalische Effekte nutzen und verstärken, die entweder in der Natur 
nicht vorkommen oder nur ephemere Erscheinungen sind.

Digitale Technologien durchdringen zunehmend alle unsere Lebensbereiche. 
Selbstlernende Programme, die auf Algorithmen basieren, beeinflussen 
nicht nur unser Verhalten, ihnen wird zunehmend die Befugnis erteilt, 
Entscheidungen zu treffen, die sowohl für unser individuelles Leben als 
auch für unsere Gesellschaft weitreichende Konsequenzen haben. Aber wie 
objektiv sind diese Programme wirklich, nach welchen Gesetzen 
funktionieren sie und wer profitiert davon? Kann ein sich laufend 
weiterentwickelndes System autonomer Roboter, das wie ein Interface 
zwischen Mensch und Maschine agiert, ein Ökosystem für die Koexistenz 
beider Spezies in einer demokratischen Gesellschaft, geprägt von 
Empathie und Respekt, bilden? Um Regeln für den Umgang mit neuen 
Technologien zu schaffen, benötigen wir Wissen, das über deren bloßen 
Gebrauch hinausgeht. Die Installationen von Katrin Hochschuh und Adam 
Donovan laden auf ästhetische und sinnliche Weise zur bewussten 
Wahrnehmung und Auseinandersetzung mit diesen Technologien ein.

in 2019, esc medien kunst labor again participates in the programme of 
*ORF Lange Nacht der Museen*. Our exhibition /EMPATHY SWARM, CURIOUS 
TAUTOPHONE AND DR. DOPPLERS MACHINE/ is open from 6pm to 1am on 
Saturday, 5.10.2019.
At 8pm, the artists Katrin Hochschuh and Adam Donovan present their 
/Robotic Perf//ormance/ (ORF musikprotokoll Spezial).
We warmly invite you to personal conversations with Katrin Hochschuh and 
Adam Donovan as well as to our guided tours through the exhibition.
Furthermore, we would like to point out that on Friday, 4.10.2019 at 6pm 
the concert performance /Psychophysics Machines/ with Katrin Hochschuh 
and Adam Donovan is going to take place as part of ORF musikprotokoll 2019.

Psychophysics Machines/* uses a number of robotic sound generating 
apparatuses where the audio perceptual engine is questioned and also 
crumbled into a heightened otherness where our natural state of hearing 
is thrown out the window. It is in essence about creating a 
transformative experience only occurring within the here and now.
The robots evoke an otherness or unworldliness by using and enhancing 
certain acoustic physical effects that either don't exist in nature or 
are momentary.

Digital technologies are increasingly permeating all aspects of our 
lives. Self-learning programs based on algorithms not only influence our 
behavior but are also increasingly granted authority to make decisions 
that have far reaching consequences, not only for our individual lives 
but for society as a whole. How objective are these programs really, 
what laws do they follow, and who profits from them? Can a continuously 
developing system of autonomous robots act as an interface between 
humans and machines and form an ecosystem for the coexistence of both 
species in a democratic society characterized by empathy and respect? In 
order to create rules for how to implement new technologies, we need a 
kind of knowledge that goes beyond how these technologies are used. The 
works by Katrin Hochschuh and Adam Donovan invite to deeply engage with 
these technologies in an aesthetic and sensual way.
