The Fundació Antoni Tàpies presents the project Tour-isms. The Defeat of
Dissent, which investigates different manifestations of tourism to work towards
a critical analysis of the influence of this global phenomenon in contemporary
society.

Understanding the Spanish and Catalan word derrota (defeat) also in its
maritime
sense of course or route, this project provides a map of critical itineraries,
a sum of dissents, which wish to question the great shipping charts which are
being imposed by an essentialist concept of culture.

The project Tour-isms. The Defeat of Dissent includes itineraries around the
city of Barcelona, a film and video programme, a lecture cycle and a
publication.

Tour-isms. The Defeat of Dissent studies the phenomenon of tourism as a
specific
factor in the development of contemporary societies, where the new forms of
sociability are defined by marketing. Touristification imposes new policies for
the use of (public) space and time that transform the imaginary of places
through a constant spatial redefinition, which alters perception of the
ordinary rhythms and values of identity of citizens and tourists.

The project is structured around two interconnected realities. The first of
these is the tourist-subject, the subject who activates environments and
memories that are standardized, but legitimated by the individual nature of the
experience and the exploration process. The tourist-subject also acts as a
transforming agent actively involved in the cultural and social transformation
processes affecting the territories visited. The second focal point for the
exhibition is tourist spaces. Such spaces reveal some of the economic,
political, cultural and social processes that define new forms of socialization
and new uses and behaviours in the frontiers that exist between that which is
private and that which is public, between the historic and the historicizable.

Tour-isms. The Defeat of Dissent is a transversal project that draws
connections
between a series of people and groups, who, through their work in a wide range
of fields - including geography, history, sociology, cultural criticism,
audiovisual practices, architecture, literature and cinema - provide insights
into the mechanisms of representation that are generated by the discourse of
tourism and play an increasingly significant role in defining images and spaces
in the contemporary world.
