Wir freuen uns, auf die Veröffentlichung der deutschen Ausgabe von Beograd
Gazela -- Reiseführer in eine Elendssiedlung beim Drava Verlag hinzuweisen.
Im Lauf des Frühjahrs folgen die weiteren Ausgaben auf romani (ebenfalls bei
Drava), serbisch (beim Belgrader Verlag Rende) und englisch.

Obwohl es in Europa eine ganze Menge an Elendssiedlungen gibt, fragt kaum
jemand danach, warum es zu deren Entstehung kommt, wie es sich darin leben
lässt und wie der Ort den Alltag seiner BewohnerInnen prägt. Besonders
auffällig wird dies am Beispiel jener Elendssiedlung unterhalb der
Autobahnbrücke Gazela in Belgrad: täglich fahren Zehntausende daran vorbei
und dennoch gibt es kaum glaubwürdige Informationen über die Siedlung und
die Menschen -- in überwiegender Mehrheit Roma -- die dort zu wohnen
gezwungen sind.

Beograd Gazela -- Reiseführer in eine Elendssiedlung richtet den Blick auf
einen Ort, an dem sich beispielhaft die jüngere Geschichte der Roma in
Südosteuropa ablesen lässt. Das Buch stellt grundlegende Informationen über
die sozialen wie ökonomischen Strukturen innerhalb dieser Siedlung bereit
und legt die vielschichtigen Mechanismen von Marginalisierung und
Diskriminierung ihrer BewohnerInnen bloß. Die einzelnen Kapitel werden
darüber hinaus von einer Diskussion begleitet, welche die Entstehung des
Reiseführers, sowie weitere, selbst nach Abschluss des Typoskriptes offen
gebliebene Fragen thematisiert.

Although there are a great many slums throughout Europe, hardly anyone ever
asks how they come into being, how life within them transpires, and what
impact such a location has on the day to day life of its residents. One
particularly striking example of such a settlement lies under the highway
bridge Gazela in Belgrade: tens of thousands pass it daily; nevertheless
there is hardly any reliable information about the settlement and the people
-- the vast majority of whom are Roma -- who are forced to live there.

Beograd Gazela -- Travel Guide to a Slum focuses attention on a place which
is paradigmatic for the recent history of Roma in Southeastern Europe. The
book provides essential information about the social and economic structures
of this slum and exposes the complex mechanisms of marginalization and
discrimination against its inhabitants. In addition, the individual chapters
are accompanied by a discussion which deals with the Travel Guide’s origin
as well as questions that were still open even after the completion of the
typescript.
