So I wound up as the assistant in both their rooms for over a year.
JS: Communication was always a problem. So I figure, if I go into it
going "Well. We were banned in Boston! DVD Talk: Your latest feature,
Turistas, was shot entirely on location in Brazil and this gives the
movie a fairly exotic look that really works well in its favor. When you
can combine words and pictures, you can tell a story magnificently.
So there are certain times when I've been editing, and we've called
retakes and something slips through, and I say "There's one for the
commentary. Was anything else taken out of the movie in order to secure
an R for theatrical play? I was told that a lot of the violence made
them uncomfortable because it felt "too real".
Neither project has any water or bikinis in it.
DVD Talk: You and your costar from Christine, Keith Gordon have both
become directors. It's a small effort on my part, but I think it makes
it a richer book.
) After decades working in print, Lee has fully embraced home video,
with more films in the pipeline. Everybody compares comics to film or
animation, but the truth is comics is a distinctly different medium.
I'm a huge fan of Disney, and these shorts are particular favorites of
mine, and other Disney fans, and I've been waiting for them to come out
on DVD. ) Having the chance to reach specific, underserved audiences via
DVD is one of the medium's best advantages, in the storyteller's
opinion.

What specifically was removed and is there any chance that this will be
restored in an unrated DVD?
They called me over a few times, and showed me what they were doing.
Beaver Valley was half stuff shot on purpose, and half not.
' A movie is really just a comic book with pictures that move. Walking
up mountains, carrying all that gear (laughs). It would be very
difficult to get that movie done today but at the time Nina Jacobson, to
her credit, wanted to make an honest, unflinching teen drama.
During the editing process I think I saw the first trailers and it sucks
that people think you are trying to ride on the coattails of another
successful movie. It's a small effort on my part, but I think it makes
it a richer book. And in a way, Stan Lee is like a grandfather to every
one of them, as one of the creators of some of the most well-known
superheroes ever. How do you feel about this? You shot this on location
in Hawaii and California and the film went on to do fairly well.

" And then it's up to the next guy to say, "Hey, we need to save that.
I tried going underwater with the actors and using a chalkboard but no
one could read my writing or understand my hand signals.
So I got hooked into the union as an apprentice film editor.
DVD Talk: From there you moved on to the first of the 'under water'
movies you've become known for, Blue Crush. As it was, very little if
any of the footage shot with the actors in the F-14's was usable.
"Writing stories and working with artists and writers. If that director
could do every piece of the process, it would be a whole different
film.
There are some really good comic movies out there, and there are plenty
that are just fun, it's like popcorn, and there are a few stinkers. JS:
It's actually hard then it looks to be working 14 hour days in a
location where everyone else is there on vacation or their honeymoon.
Yeah, that was very personality-driven stuff.
"Some men like to play golf," says Lee, as a camera crew stands ready to
catch his latest bon mots.
" I'll apologize later. "I used to have a column called 'Stan's
Soapbox,' where I would talk to the readers, and it was on a page called
'Bullpen Bulletins,' and I wrote that page also. I'm well, how are you?
It's easy to lump movies into a category but I think there are really
big differences between the two films. The budgets were very low, simply
because there was only one or two or three guys out there in the field
working on it.
) After so much time in the industry and so many achievements though, no
one could blame Lee from taking a break and enjoying some down time with
Joan, his wife of nearly 60 years.
" I'd been working on it for so long that when it did happen finally, it
wasn't a giant shock.
We were banned in Boston! I tried going underwater with the actors and
using a chalkboard but no one could read my writing or understand my
hand signals.

big fan.
Did being an actor help you at all when directing your actors? "Probably
more females would buy something like Mosaic, which features a girl,
than they would buy Conan the Barbarian, let's say.
