Prague Summer Courses on Journalism and the European Union

Spend two weeks in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities learning from
an award-winning newsmagazine and one of the Czech Republic’s best think tanks.

TOL Summer 2005 Foreign Correspondent Training Course: July 16-July 30

Transitions Online (TOL)—the leading Internet newsmagazine covering Central
and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and the former Soviet Union—will be presenting
a summer course designed to prepare college and university students for a career
in international journalism. Unlike many other journalism courses, TOL’s
instruction
will offer much more than theory. Our speakers will provide concrete examples
drawn
from years of experience in both Central and Eastern Europe and elsewhere.
Lecturers and TOL staff members who have worked for CNN, the Boston Globe,
MSNBC,
Dow Jones the Economist, Reuters, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and the BBC
will
talk about how they got their start and the lessons they’ve learned working in
print,
broadcast, and Internet journalism. During the second week, you’ll tackle a
reporting
assignment in Prague. You will be assigned to cover a story and will spend two
to three
days reporting and writing your article. Course trainers will treat participant
stories
as professional submissions and will offer constructive criticism—on subject
matter,
sources, and story structure. The best articles will be published on TOL’s
website
and offered to foreign editors throughout the world via our syndication system.
The cost of this training course will be: $1190/920 €.

EUROPEUM/TOL “Europe in Transition” Summer School: July 2-July 12

The EUROPEUM Institute for European Policy—the top think tank in Prague dealing
with European integration and the European Union (EU) — will be offering a
series of
workshops and other activities that will educate participants in different areas
of the EU,
with a special focus on the crucial challenges that will face the EU in the
coming years.
EUROPEUM staff and guest speakers will tackle a variety of themes, including:
European
security; the new member states and candidate countries; the EU constitution;
and financing
the European Union. TOL trainers will lead workshops designed to put that
knowledge into action,
that teach you how to write compelling EU stories, powerful op-eds, and smart
analysis pieces.
The cost of the “Europe in Transition” summer school will be $990/760 €.

The summer won’t be all work, though. Among the cultural and social activities
that
we plan to organize: a guided tour of Prague; a visit to Radio Free
Europe/Ministry
of Foreign Affairs; a visit to a Czech castle or two; a boat trip on the Vltava
River;
and an evening at a Czech beer garden.

Participants will come from a variety of countries and offer a mix of views on
the media
and foreign affairs, providing you the possibility of forming life-long
friendships and
professional partnerships with colleagues who will soon be leaders in some of
the world's
most newsworthy places. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.
Scholarships may be available, though preference will be given to citizens of
Central
and Eastern Europe.
