Kubelka, known as a filmmaker under the name Friedl vom Gröller since 2009, often finds her protagonists in her circle of friends, acquaintances, and family. Other frequent subjects are artists or clients, whom she mainly portraits looking straight into the camera. The face as the image of one captured moment, of an emotion, of a controlled or uncontrolled circumstance, of a pose or gesture, functions as a blank slate, who affectively bonds the protagonists with the spectators. In case of her longterm portrait of Max Turnheim, an ongoing film project Gröller started in 2002 when Max was 20 years old, she expands her approach with insights of his family, lovers, or random details about his work.<br class=""><br class=""></span><div class=""><span class="">Whereas Friedl Kubelka’s early films of the 1960s and 1970s represent an empathetic accession to the protagonists, in her later films she increasingly makes use of surprise or an attack on her object, through which she also attempts to satisfy her keen interest in people and their psyches. She herself describes this practice as “reaching in,” a method that came to her in the late 1990s on the couch during her training as a psychoanalyst and is comparable to “reaching back” (to the therapist) during a session – a forbidden act. Here films like Delphine de Oliveira, Passage Briare or Le Baromètre serve as a pretext for negotiating, expanding, and regulating relationships or connections through the camera. Her work and education as psychoanalyst is explicitly treated in films such as Secret Identities of a Psychoanalyst (1995-2005), Psychoanalyses without Ethics (2005) or My Psychoanalytic Notes (2012), all films that she prefers not to show in Austria, where she lives.<br class=""><br class="">Often the artist also uses her camera to document and stage personal events, to make – like she says “her own life more interesting.“ The palette of the narration ranges from the purchase of a new outfit to embalming the skin, a tooth operation throught to sexuality when older, peeing in the woods, stripping, a soft-porn shooting, dressing up as man, visits in Rome, Paris or Dakar, and the process of her mother dying.
