At the beginning of Adina Camhy’s crater, a hole in the floor of her apartment opened up overnight – a negative space, the trace or scar of a mysterious event. Accompanying this narration, as in the rest of this stringently composed film essay, we see appropriated images of initially unexplained origin. Only at the end of the work, which was created out of a cooperation with Dan Robert Lahiani, do we learn that the material comes primarily from NASA sources, a geo-information producer, various YouTube channels, and the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial. What connects all of these finds is, on the one hand, the voiceover narrative, which draws a reflective arc based on various crater appearances on earth and in space: depth and abyss as evidence of past moments of violence. The title of Anna Spanlang’s film takes up the activist practice of identifying with the victims, as is practiced in the protests against femicide, to say the names of the murdered women. The film includes images from a FLINTA* action protesting structural violence against women in Austria; images of sex workers posing at a slut walk in Los Angeles, of befriended artists and skateboarders, and of a positive pregnancy test, which leads to the question of whether to have an abortion or not. Magnification reveals cellular processes; time-lapse and slow-motion effects bring the bursting of pollen and sprouting of flowers up to the scale of human perception. In under the microscope, these and other famous motifs from the history of science films make their appearance. Just as often, however, it is hard to determine just what is pulsating, bursting, or proliferating in the picture. In her glittering remontage of science films from the 1920s, Michaela Grill does not spread out catalogues of motifs, but aims straight at the fascination of these recordings: their value as educational material was never neatly separated from their aesthetic appeal as a pure cinematic spectacle. I am the Tigress

A curtain, a shadow, one dancing hand, and then another: Tischa Thomas stages her performance. She pushes herself into the frame bit by bit, with flowing movements, to the rhythm of the music. Right before our eyes, “The Tigress” emerges from the individual body parts. She’s a performer of the first order, full of ambition, who challenges herself every day, whose dream is to have a number 1 spot as a bodybuilder. Philipp Fussenegger and co-director and DoP Dino Osmanović accompany 47-year-old Tischa to bodybuilding competitions in the USA and Romania and show her training sessions: “Look at you. Dirndlschuld

The landscape appears in Super-8 shots from vacation photographs. The pictures show a summer idyll of the second order, with gorgeous but also unreal colors and moods, and scenery reminiscent of landscape painting. In Dirndlschuld, with her calm voiceover and these images, Wilbirg Brainin-Donnenberg lays bare the traces of her own family history, which prove to be representative of the Austrian way of dealing with the past. The term “dirndl guilt”, embroidered in the title insert as if out of naiveté, points to the fact that behind the seemingly innocently beautiful Austrian cultural landscape, an abysmal history is concealed. Tscherkassky flits through the history of the filmic avant-garde, conceiving his work as a centrifuge of quotations from the pantheon of visionary cinema. He conjures heaven and hell, embarking on a collision course fearlessly bound for the apocalyptic. One could call this highly complex and simultaneously elemental film a darkroom action experiment, an underground blockbuster, or a kinetic painting in a thousand shades of grey. It is woven out of twitching film frames, flashing light, and spectacularly collapsing motifs – a concrete abstract cinema of meta-attractions and frenzy.
