This seminar will explore the social, political and cultural agents that drive the engines of the gifting of academic knowledge. Who is on the receiving end of which kind of knowledge, who produces and determines the cycles of exchange and appreciation? In
a world system of university rankings, regionalised hubs of academic influence, money flows and uneven power relationships, the exchange of knowledge and, all the more so, the definition of what knowledge constitutes is a fraught and fascinating topic when
approaching it inside a frame of reciprocity. The main questions that guide my thinking are: Who gifts, defines, owns and distributes knowledge? And how are these neocolonial exchange systems resisted, redefined and challenged? What counts as knowledge and
what is marginalised or silenced?
