Mit „trigon 67/17“ präsentiert das Künstlerhaus – Halle für Kunst & Medien zum 50-jährigen Jubiläum nun eine Neuauflage.<BR><BR>Die Dreiländer-Biennale „trigon“ wurde 1963 im Zuge einer allgemeinen kulturellen Aufbruchsstimmung in Graz gegründet. Sie sollte den künstler-<BR>ischen Austausch der aneinandergrenzenden Länder Österreich, Italien und Jugoslawien intensivieren. Nach zwei konventionellen Ausgaben zu den traditionellen Gattungen Malerei und Skulptur wandte sich die erste thematische „trigon“-Ausstellung 1967 mit dem Titel „ambiente / environment“ dem Umgang mit Raum in der Kunst zu – und löste mit ihren genreübergreifenden Raumgestaltungen und einem vollkommen neuartigen Ausstellungsdisplay prompt einen „Schock der Moderne“ aus. So lässt sich etwa die Entstehungsgeschichte des steirischen herbstes, der 2017 ebenfalls seine 50. Ausgabe feiert, durch die von „trigon 67“ ausgelösten Impulse erklären.<BR><BR>Der künstlerische Umgang mit Raum steht auch im Zentrum der diesjährigen Neuauflage: Am Originalschauplatz – dem Künstlerhaus und seinen umliegenden Außenflächen – nehmen abermals 15 Künstler und (nun auch) Künstlerinnen aus dem Trigon-Raum in ortsspezifischen Neuproduktionen, Installationen und raumgreifenden Auseinandersetzungen mit Skulptur, Malerei und Medien eine Aktualisierung des ursprünglichen Themas vor.<BR><BR>50 Jahre nach „trigon 67“ treten dabei auch die veränderten politischen Geografien des Trigon-Raums zutage. Obgleich inzwischen die digitalen Kommunikationswege und die voranschreitende Überwindung von Sprachbarrieren den künstlerischen Austausch befruchtet haben, behindern in jüngster Zeit etwa reaktivierte stationäre Grenzkontrollen die Zusammenarbeit. 25 Jahre nach dem Ende der trigon-Biennale mit einer Überblicksschau 1992 hat sich der politische Raum, auf den sich „trigon“ einst bezog, erneut gewandelt.<BR><BR>Dennoch geht „trigon 67/17“ zunächst einmal dezidiert künstlerischen und kunsthistorischen Fragestellungen nach: Welche Relevanz hat Raum in der Kunst heute? Welche Entwicklungen beziehungsweise Veränderungen in der institutionellen und kuratorischen Praxis lassen sich zwischen 1967 und 2017 feststellen? Welche Bedeutung haben Ausstellungsarchitektur und Display für die Präsentation von Kunst?<BR><BR>Das inhaltliche und historische Fundament der Ausstellung bilden Originalarbeiten, Zeichnungen, Skizzen, Archivmaterial sowie eine umfangreiche Dia- und Filmschau zu „trigon 67“, gezeigt im Untergeschoss des Künstlerhauses. Die Eingangssituation der Ausstellung wird in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Architekten Eilfried Huth konzipiert. Gemeinsam mit Günther Domenig war Huth schon an „trigon 67“ beteiligt. Die beiden Architekten hatten damals am Zugang zum Künstlerhaus eine haushohe spiralförmige Kuppel aus transparentem Kunststoff realisiert. In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary, the Künstlerhaus presents an updated version of this show, titled "trigon 67/17."<BR><BR>The tri-nation biennial “trigon” was founded in 1963, in the wake of a general cultural upheaval in Graz. It was intended to intensify artistic exchange among the neighboring countries of Austria, Italy, and Yugoslavia. After two conventional versions featuring the traditional genres of painting and sculpture, the first thematic “trigon” exhibition in 1967, titled “ambiente / environment,” was devoted to ways of dealing with space in art. Its cross-genre, three-dimensional works and entirely new form of presentation promptly triggered a “shock of the new.” For instance, the ideas generated by “trigon 67” also laid the foundation for the creation of the steirischer herbst festival, which is also celebrating its fiftieth birthday in 2017.<BR><BR>At the center of this year’s show are the various ways art can deal with space. Once again, fifteen artists (most of them female, this time) from the trigon region will reexamine the original theme in the original arena—the Künstlerhaus and its outdoor environs—and present new, site-specific productions, installations, and three-dimensional explorations of sculpture, painting, and media.<BR><BR>Fifty years after “trigon 67,” the changing political geography of the trigon region is taken into consideration. Even though language barriers continue to be broken, and digital communication has improved artistic dialogues, recent developments, such as the reactivation of stationary border controls, are hindering cooperation. Twenty-five years after the trigon biennial came to an end with a survey exhibition in 1992, the political region that trigon once served has again been transformed.<BR><BR>Nevertheless, “trigon 67/17” decidedly still pursues artistic and art historical questions: What relevance does space have in contemporary art today? Which developments or changes in institutional and curatorial practices between 1967 and 2017 can be discerned? What significance do exhibition architecture and display have in the presentation of art?<BR><BR>The show’s contextual and historical foundation comprises original works of art, drawings, sketches, archival material, and an extensive slide and film show about “trigon 67,” will be shown in the basement of the Künstlerhaus. The staging of the entrance has again been conceived in collaboration with the architect Eilfried Huth, who, along with Günther Domenig, participated in “trigon 67.” At the time, the two architects created a spiral-shaped dome made of transparent plastic and as high as a house for the entrance of the Künstlerhaus.
