*Parabol Art Magazine #9 – The Ritual Issue*

Parabol Art Magazine ist eine internationale Zeitschriftenreihe zur
zeitgenössischen Kunst in englischer Sprache. Jede Ausgabe wird von
einer Kurator*in mit dem Auftrag gestaltet, zeitgenössische Phänomene
in Bild und Schrift auf Basis künstlerischer Standpunkte zu betrachten.
Der Schwerpunkt der Zeitschrift liegt auf der Darstellung
zeitgenössischer Kunst im grafischen Bereich. Die Bebilderung der
Ausgaben ist das Hauptaugenmerk der Zeitschrift, die durch das
markante, große Format begünstigt wird.

Parabol Art Magazin ist ein Projekt der Designagentur section.d,
des Kurator*innenkollektivs section.a und des Art Directors
Chris Goennawein.

Im Rahmen der Präsentation sprechen *Katharina Boesch* und
*Andreas Krištof *vom Kurator*innenkollektiv *section.a*, das für die
Herausgabe verantwortlich zeichnet, über die grundlegende
Konzeption des Magazines.

Der Fokus des Abends liegt auf der aktuellen Ausgabe, #9 –
The Ritual Issue: Zwei der im Magazin repräsentierten Künstler*innen,
*Sophie Utikal* und *Eliana Otta* geben einen Einblick in ihre
künstlerischen Arbeiten und *Imayna Caceres*, gemeinsam mit
Verena Melgarejo Weinandt eine der beiden Kuratorinnen,
präsentiert die Ideen, die The Ritual Issue zugrunde liegen und die sich
folgendermaßen zusammenfassen lassen:

„Rituals hold peoples together in their need for connecting and
transcendence. Determined by power and the hegemonic forces which
establish which rituals are valid, the colonialist monopoly of catholicism
almost completely displaced any other symbolic system that proposed
strategies of resistance for non-dominant groups and positions.
In this issue, the invited artists share a deep preoccupation with the
intersection of political, sexual, ecological and spiritual realms.
Their works push the association between third-world, racialized,
gendered bodies and colonial history, political activism and ancestral
references, sexual politics and mystical sources.“

*Imayna Caceres*(*1979 Lima) is an artist, writer, curator, graduate
from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with a background on Sociology,
and part of the TRENZA collective. Her work focuses on the making
of meaning in community, Andean, Amazonian and Mestiza heritages
and practices of joy, kinship and decolonial regeneration towards
social justice.

*Sophie Utikal*(*1987 Tallahassee). Just in time she quit her job,
took the money, and moved to Vienna to study art. Now she studies
with Ashley Hans Scheirl at the Academy of Fine Arts and likes to work
collectively on issues related to her own experiences. Departing from
her own body, she tries to translate her experiences into words and
images introducing a new possible order to them. It is about the
reconstruction of the self. What seemed lost? What is possible
in the future?

*Eliana Otta*(*1981 Lima) is an artist with a Master in Cultural Studies,
who inquiries about our relations with precarious labor and nature
in neoliberal, extractivist economies, and also gender inequality,
intersecting feminism, poetry and politics. She addresses these
questions creating spaces for conversation and experimentation through
shared intimacy, with collective projects that involve curatorial and
editorial work; and fostering the explosion of corky, wild dances with
her eternally amateur dj flaquita alter ego.
