FINDING A PLACE IN THE WORLD
Public Mobilization in Iceland During the Boom and After the Crash


Iceland enjoyed a prosperous boom period in the early 2000s, which ended abruptly with a historical economic crash in 2008.
The presentation focuses on the strong public mobilization during the boom period through nationalistic discourses and the
glorification of the businessmen, often referred to in daily talk as Business Vikings. Finally, the discussion briefly mentions the
democratic reforms after the crash, based on high hopes of a "new" Iceland.

Kristín Loftsdóttir, Ph.D. is Professor of Anthropology at the Department of Human and Social Sciences at the University of Iceland in Reykjavík.
