Avancierter Jazz, Improvisation, Neue Musik, Elektronik ... Wie immer, so auch im Dezember, steht auf alle Fälle aktuell „Zeitgenössisches“ am Programm von „open music“ – im Falle von Garth Knox (u. a. langjähriges Mitglied des Arditti Quartetts) auch unter Einbeziehung Alter Musik und der barocken Viola d´amore, die er vor allem mit zeitgenössischem Repertoire zum Klingen bringt, im Falle von Larry Ochs mit einer brandneuen Produktion samt pressfrischer CD als Österreichpremiere.

Er gilt als einer der herausragendsten zeitgenössischen Musiker, ist einer der wenigen, die das Paradoxon von Bandbreite und Offenheit mit Konzentration und absoluter Qualität in einer Person zu verbinden wissen: Garth Knox komponiert, interpretiert zeitgenössisches ebenso wie barockes Repertoire, liebt die Volksmusik seiner Heimat, improvisiert mit Größen wie George Lewis, Steve Lacy, Joelle Léandre, Dominique Pifarély, Bruno Chevillon, war jahrelang Mitglied des Ensemble InterContemporain und Arditti Quartet …, ist als Solist international ebenso gefragt wie als Lehrer. Dabei firmiert er nicht nur als einer der ganz großen charismatischen Meister der Viola, sondern auch der Viola d’amore. In seinen Händen ersteht dieses lange vernachlässigte barocke Instrument wieder zu neuem Leben – mit Alter wie Neuer Musik. 

Seine mit der französischen Cellistin Agnès Vesterman eingespielte, hymnisch rezensierte CD (ECM, 2008) trägt kurzum den Titel „D´Amore“. Gramophone schwärmt: “Not a slushy love fest, but a musical ménage that one doesn't want to end.”

LARRY OCHS SAX & DRUMMING CORE

Larry Ochs´ Name ist seit inzwischen drei Jahrzehnten engstens mit dem Rova Sax Quartet verbunden. Anthony Braxton, George Lewis, Butch Morris, Dave Douglas, Steve Lacy, Andrew Cyrille, Fred Frith, John Zorn … – you name it – zählen zu seinen musikalischen Partnern, „Maybe Monday“ mit Fred Frith, „Jones Jones“ mit Mark Dresser oder „Kihnoua“ zu seinen Gruppen. Mit Don Robinson, einem technischen Meister an den Drums (Coda bezeichnete ihn schlichtweg als „percussive dervish“) und Scott Amendola, der wiederum mit keinen geringeren als Nels Cline, Bill Frisell, Johnny Griffin, Carla Kihlstedt … bis hin zu Nina Hagen und Madeleine Peyroux spielt, bildete er 2000 LARRY OCHS SAX & DRUMMING CORE. Es begann als eine Art Meditation, ein Destillat der Lieder und Klänge amerikanischer und osteuropäischer Blues-Shouter und traditioneller Gesänge aus Asien und Afrika. Das Resultat nunmehr: aktuelle Musik voller musikalischer Dialoge und melodischer, polyrhythmischer Wechselspiele, „urban modern music“ …

Nach zwei CD-Veröffentlichungen und vier Tourneen als Trio ist Larry Ochs nunmehr wieder in erweiterter Quintett-Besetzung mit einer der wichtigsten Stimmen der aktuellen Jazzkomposition und stupend virtuosen Pianistin Satoko Fujii und dem großartigen Trompeter Natsuki Tamura auf Tour. Mit im Gepäck auch die brandneue CD des Quintetts: „Stone Shift“ (Rogue Art, Paris, 2009).

Agnès Vesterman

With a vast experience in chamber music as the cellist of the Arpeggione Quartet from 1988 to 2001, laureate of the Evian International Competition, quartet in residence at the Sorbonne University, Agnès Vesterman appears as soloist and chamber musician in many festivals in France and abroad. Along her “classical” career, she now develops many artistic collaborations on the improvisation scene. She created the Circé ensemble, a team of artists from different worlds, writers, actors, painters and sculptors, who work together on various shows (children´s show “Dingdongueries” with writer and actor Vincent Vedovelli in Toulon and Paris in 2006, premiere of “High Tension” in Warsaw in 2007 performed on instruments created by polish sculptor Andrzej Krol) . She regularly plays with clarinetist Sylvain Kassap and pianist Christofer Bjurström and is currently recording improvisations for solo cello with label Koka Media. Contemporary premieres are also a priority on her agenda with composers Forget, Bacri or Campo. Her recordings include Schumann quartets, Kodaly, Prokoviev and Janacek sonatas, Régis Campo cello pieces, and to come the cello sonatas of Forget. Her great interest for Alexander Technique and Taichi chuan has led her to develop a new approach to teaching. She is currently professor of chamber music at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris and professor of cello at the Conservatoire National Régional de Boulogne.

 

Garth Knox

Garth Knox wurde in Irland geboren und wuchs in Schottland auf. Als Jüngster von vier Geschwistern, die alle Streichinstrumente spielen, lernte er Viola und entschied sich schon früh, Musiker zu werden. Er studierte am Royal College of Music in London bei Frederick Riddle und gewann schon bald mehrere Preise für Viola und für Kammermusik. Nach dem Studium spielte er mit fast allen führenden Gruppen in London verschiedene Repertoires vom Barock bis zu Neuer Musik. 

1983 lud ihn Pierre Boulez ein, Mitglied des Ensemble InterContemporain in Paris zu werden. Dort erhielt er die Chance als Solist aufzutreten – auch bei Konzerten, die von Pierre Boulez dirigiert wurden – und Kammermusik zu spielen. Zusammen mit dem Ensemble InterContemporain war er weltweit auf Tournee und spielte auf internationalen Festivals. 

1990 wurde er Mitglied des Arditti String Quartetts und trat in allen wichtigen Konzertsälen der Welt auf. Er arbeitete eng mit den führenden Komponisten der Gegenwart zusammen und spielte Uraufführungen von Ligeti, Kurtag, Berio, Xenakis, Lachenmann, Cage, Feldmann und Stockhausen (das bekannte „Helicopter Quartett“). 

1998 verließ Garth Knox das Quartett, um sich auf seine Solokarriere zu konzentrieren. Als Solist wurden von ihm Stücke verschiedener Komponisten uraufgeführt, so Kompositionen von Henze (der ihm die Viola Sonata widmete), von Ligeti, Schnittke, Ferneyhough, James Dillon, George Benjamin und vielen anderen. Er gab international Konzerte, spielte Aufnahmen für den WDR in Deutschland ein, brachte die Komposition für zwei Violas von Peter Eötvös zusammen mit Tabea Zimmermann zur Uraufführung, spielte mit Kim Kashkashian eine Serie von Duo Konzerten …

In letzter Zeit wurde er zu einem Pionier auf der Viola d’Amore, deren Möglichkeiten für Neue Musik er entdeckt hat –mit und ohne Elektronik. Gegenwärtig erarbeitet er ein neues Repertoire für dieses Instrument. 

Garth Knox lebt in Paris, wo er sich ganz seiner Solokarriere widmet. Er gibt Solokonzerte, tritt als Solist mit Orchester und bei Kammermusik Konzerten in ganz Europa, den USA und Japan auf. Zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen, etwa seine Solo CD (MO 782082) oder „Spectral Viola“ (edition zeitklang), werden mit dem begehrten Deutschen Schallplattenpreis und höchstem Lob bedacht. Gegenwärtig ist er Professor für Viola am Musikene in San Sebastian.

Donald Robinson

Described as a “percussive dervish” (Coda) Donald Robinson is a technical master of the drums. He is a stalwart of the of San Francisco Bay Area avant-garde jazz scene, playing and recording with many of the area´s improvisational players, from saxophonists John Tchicai, Marco Eneidi and Larry Ochs to Koto player Miya Masaoka and pianist Matthew Goodheart, and with prominent visitors like Cecil Taylor, Wadada Leo Smith, George Lewis, trumpeter Raphe Malik and Canadian pianist Paul Plimley. Much of this work has featured the combination of Robinson and bassist Lisle Ellis as rhythm section, “the best bass-drums tag team on the scene” (Jazz Times). His longest musical association, dating from the 1970's, was with the late tenor saxophonist Glenn Spearman. He has appeared on numerous CDs, especially with Spearman, Ochs and Ellis.

 

Scott Amendola

Over the past 15 years Scott Amendola has toured, recorded or performed with Scott Amendola Band, Nels Cline Singers, Bill Frisell, Madeleine Peyroux, Charlie Hunter, Dave Liebman, John Zorn, Wadada Leo Smith, Jacky Terrasson, Satoko Fujii, Jenny Scheinman, Carla Kihlstedt, Shweta Jhaveri, Robin Holcomb and the Joe Goode Dance Group, Wayne Horvitz, Johnny Griffin, Viktor Krauss, Paul Plimley, Tony Furtado, Jack Walrath, Julian Priester, Sonny Simmons, Rova Saxophone Quartet, Pat Martino, Clarence Seay, Nels Cline, Peter Apfelbaum, Jim Campilongo, Bobby Black, Paul McCandless, Ben Goldberg, Mark Turner, Michael Franti, Primus, Nina Hagen, Phil Lesh, and others. Satoko Fujii

Critics and fans alike hail pianist and composer Satoko Fujii as one of the most original new voices in jazz. A truly global artist, she splits her time between New York City and Japan and has toured internationally leading several different ensembles. She uses melodies as simple and straightforward as a folk song, as well as the harmonic sophistication of great jazz, and she can manipulate the extended forms of symphonic composers. As an improviser Fujii is equally wide-ranging and virtuosic. In her solos, explosive free jazz energy mingles with delicate melodicism and a broad palette of timbre and textures. Her phrasing is equally indebted to her classical training and her jazz experience. She has showcased her astonishing range and ability on over 30 CDs as leader or co-leader since 1996.

 

Natsuki Tamura

“Tamura shrewdly creates a sound world that while completely his own also hints at the mythological and musical folklore of Asian and European cultures .... a persona no less self-contained than that of early, wandering bluesmen like Robert Johnson or Charlie Patton.” (Ken Waxman, Jazzweekly)

Japanese trumpeter and composer Natsuki Tamura is internationally recognized for his ability to blend a unique vocabulary of extended techniques with touching jazz lyricism. His appearances at festivals worldwide include a solo trumpet performance at the 1998 Texaco New York Jazz Festival, as well as appearances at Newport Jazz in Madarao, Festival of New Trumpet Music at Tonic in NYC, San Francisco Jazz Festival, Vancouver Jazz Festival, Yokohama Jazz, Moers Festival in Germany. In addition to performing with his own group, Tamura has performed with Satoko Fujii, Rova´s Electric Ascension Band, Misha Mengelberg, Chris Brown, and Le Quan Ninh among many others.
