What's in the process list when running aptitude/apt-get? (ps auxwwww)
Do you use etckeeper? Does removing etckeeper help? (dpkg --purge etckeeper)
What's inside /tmp/log if you execute
"strace -f -eopen -o /tmp/log apt-get install longrun"?
