Industriezone, Naherholungsgebiet und sensibles Ökosystem – die Donau ist als überformte Kulturlandschaft von starken Gegensätzen geprägt. Die österreichischen Künstler Herwig Turk und Gebhard Sengmüller machen dies in Zusammenarbeit mit der Umwelthistorikerin und Publizistin Ortrun Veichtlbauer zum Ausgangspunkt ihrer groß angelegten künstlerischen Recherche: Im Rahmen ihres Projekts „Donau: Schichtwechsel im Lückenraum“ entstand ein ursprünglich für Wien konzipierter Werkkomplex an der Schnittstelle von Kunst und Wissenschaft. Für die Ausstellung im Lentos wird dieser in Zusammenarbeit mit Forscher:innen unterschiedlicher Disziplinen unter dem Titel „Donau:Insel“ um ausgewählte topografische, ökologische und historische Gegebenheiten der Stadt Linz erweitert. <br>
<br>
In flussnahen urbanen Ballungsräumen wie Linz oder Wien sehen wir ganz deutlich, wie sehr natürliche Wasserkreisläufe und und Fließgewässer durch menschliche Aktivitäten beeinflusst wurden und auch in Zukunft bleiben werden. Die technologischen Entwicklungen schreiben sich in das Flussbett ein, betreffen aber auch das Einzugsgebiet des Flusssystems sowie das Grundwasser. Überformung durch Regulierungen, verbaute Uferanlagen, Industriegebiete und Staustufen erzeugen eine Landschaft, die sich stark von der vor 150 Jahren unterscheidet. Mit ihren künstlerischen Strategien versuchen Turk & Sengmüller, diese Transformationen sichtbar zu machen. Alte Holzbalken, Seile, Ketten und deren getestete Belastbarkeit erzählen von den sich wandelnden Transportbedingungen und Querungen des mächtigen Flusses. Die verschwundenen Inseln, Auen und Arme der Donau erzeugen nostalgische Nachbilder einer Landschaft, die niemals nur Idylle war. Der Puls des Flusses ist heute ein anderer, sein Rhythmus verändert sich ständig. Die vor 70 Jahren ausgehobenen Baggerseen sind heute geschützte Inseln der Biodiversität – Oasen im Windschatten des größten Industriekomplexes Österreichs. Auch die Abdichtung des Grundwassers zur Donau veränderte den Stoffwechsel des Stromes. Schlackenberge erzeugen industrielle Panoramen an den Ufern der Traun. Drohnenaufnahmen der Umrundung des Industriegebietes zeigen Strukturen von bizarrer Schönheit. Abstrakte Muster von Anlegestellen, Schienen, Straßen, Lagerplätzen und angehäuften Materialien aller Schattierungen treffen auf die Farbmischung durch den Zusammenfluss von Traun und Donau. Historische Fotografien dokumentieren in Momentaufnahmen die erste Phase der Umwandlung der landwirtschaftlichen Flächen von St. Peter und Zizlau in industriell genutzten Raum. Der Prozess einer radikalen Neuausrichtung auch der Landschaftsgestaltung manifestiert sich ab dem "Anschlussjahr" 1938, als fruchtbare Humusschichten abgetragen und eine Industrielandschaft errichtet wurde. <br>

Aber worüber sprechen wir, wenn wir heute von Natur sprechen? Wir sind Teil der Kreisläufe, modifizieren sie und verändern uns mit ihnen. Längst sind wir in einer Spirale gelandet, die uns kein Verharren erlaubt. Immer wieder müssen wir eingreifen und verwickeln uns dabei in neue Konflikte, die weitere Interventionen notwendig machen.<br>

Mit Hilfe künstlerisch-wissenschaftlicher Methoden blickt „Donau:Insel“ damit nicht nur auf die heutigen Oberflächen der Landschaft sondern wandert entlang der Zeitachse in die Vergangenheit und auch in die Zukunft. </span><br>
