ASCII viert haar vijfjarig bestaan!

Op 21 mei 1999 opende ASCII Internetwerkplaats voor het eerst haar deuren in
een kraakpand op de Herengracht in Amsterdam. Al vijf jaar is ASCII dagelijks
open om gratis te internetten en zijn er workshops over allerlei aan computers
gerelateerde onderwerpen, zoals het gebruik van open source software,
computerbeveiliging en activisme. Ook stond ASCII, samen met andere
organisaties, aan de wieg van de nederlandse versie van Indymedia, waren we
met ons mobiele internetcafe aanwezig op aktiekampen en demonstraties en
bouwen medewerkers van ASCII aan een coöperatief draadloos internet netwerk
door amsterdam. Een groep vrouwen in ASCII richtte de Genderchangers Academie
(GCA) op, die met haar "vrouwen leren vrouwen" een bijdrage levert aan de
digitale emancipatie.

In de afgelopen vijf jaar zijn we regelmatig verhuisd. Eerst werd ons
hoekpandje op de Herengracht ontruimd. Toen wij daarna de kelder van het Fort
van Sjakoo op de Jodenbreestraat huurden kregen zij een huurverhoging van 900%.
Wij wilden onze activiteiten low-budget voortzetten en besloten weer te gaan
kraken. Na een minder succesvolle kraak op Kinkerstraat 332 zitten we nu alweer
ruim een jaar op Kinkerstraat 92-94. Ook daar zullen wij echter binnenkort
moeten vertrekken.

Ons vijfjarig bestaan vieren wij uitbundig met een week vol met workshops en
internationale gasten, vooral van soortgelijke internetwerkplaatsen in Europa.
Behalve voor de workshops nodigen we je ook uit voor onze borrel op
vrijdagavond de 21e. Op zaterdag de 22e is het bovendien groot feest in
Afrika, Oostelijke handelskade 19, waar vanaf 22:00 uur dj's en bands
zullen optreden. Natuurlijk zijn alle activiteiten, net als ons internetcafe,
gratis toegankelijk.

ASCII five years!

On May 21, 1999, the ASCII Internet workshop first opened its doors in a
squatted building on the Herengracht in Amsterdam. For the past five years,
ASCII has been opened daily, offering free internet access  and organizing
workshops on several computer-related subjects as 'the use of open source
software' , 'computer security' and activism: ASCII was one of the founders
of the Dutch version of Indymedia and was present on action camps and
demonstrations with its mobile internet cafe. ASCII volunteers are currently
assembling a cooperative wireless network in Amsterdam. A group of ASCII
women founded the GCA (Gender Changer Academy) that contributes to the
'digital emancipation'.

In the past five years, ASCII has been moving a couple of times. First, our
little corner on the Herengracht was evacuated. Then, while renting the
cellar of the 'Fort van Sjakoo' (Sjakoo's fortress) on the Jodenbreestraat,
they were confronted with a rent increase of 900%. Since we wanted to
continue our activities on a low-budget basis, we decided to crack another
place. After a less successful attempt on the Kinkerstraat 332, we're housed
for a year already on the Kinkerstraat 92-94. Sadly, we'll have to leave
there soon enough too.

We're exuberantly celebrating our five-year anniversary with a week crammed
with workshops and international guests - mainly from sister-organizations
from all over Europe. Next to the workshops, you're also invited to come to
our informal party, which is held on friday-evening, May 21.
On saturday, May 22, there is a big party in Afrika,  Oostelijke handelskade
19, adorned by several DJ's and bands' performances taking off from 22.00.  
Needless to say that - like our internet cafe - there's NO admission charged.

		second installment of the linux course for beginners
		this time covering network operations and install tasks

 17:00   wireless mesh clouds & community networks
		a more advanced workshop and presentation on the concept
		of dsitributed wireless routing networks & wireless
		community building models

THURSDAY 20

 15:30 onward GCA embroidery corner
		tea, home-made cookies and embroidery featuring
		computer technology motives.

 14:00   muse and freej presentation
		a presentation of audio software on linux.
		producing and presenting music content with free software.

 19:00   LAMP webhosting basics on linux
		LAMP stands for linux + apache + mysql + php.
		this combination of software comprisee the basis for a
		webhosting service. an introduction into the underlying
		concepts & methods

FRIDAY 21

 14:00   security and privacy online
		these days governments, corporate dataminers, and
		malicious individuals like spammers or virus distributers
		target the online user. this should introduce you to ways
		how to deal with those circumstances in a proactive and
		educated way

SATURDAY 22

		presentation on animation and video editing software on
		linux. how to use free software platforms for multimedia
		production
