In meiner Aktion am 10. Mai wird auf zahlreiche weitere verstörende Beispiele hingewiesen.

DIESES JAHR ZEIGT HANS NEVIDAL RETTUNGSEINSÄTZE IM GAZASTREIFEN
Aus aktuellem Anlass thematisiere ich dieses Jahr mit meiner Aktion ein der Bücherverbrennung von 1933 inhärentes Phänomen: den Antisemitismus und wie durch Traumatisierung aus Opfern Täter wurden und so die Vernichtung von Menschen jüdischer „Rasse“ durch den Nazistaat erschreckend schnell in ethnische (richtiger: religiöse) Säuberung – letztendlich in Völkermord an den Palästinensern – durch den Staat Israel umschlägt.

Beängstigend ist die Einengung des „Meinungskorridors“1 in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (auf die ich hier meinen Fokus richte), wo jede Kritik am Staat Israel als „Antisemitismus“ diffamiert und bestraft wird. Zum Beispiel wird jeder Vergleich israelischer Politik mit der des Nazistaates gemäß Beispiel 10 der Antisemitismus-Definition der International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance2 als antisemitisch verboten. Unter dem Vorwand, „die Übel Völkermord, ethnische Säuberung, Rassismus, Antisemitismus und Ausländerfeindlichkeit weltweit zu bekämpfen“3, wird die Kritik an den Verbrechen des Staates Israel diskreditiert. Die Situation erinnert an die McCarthy-Ära mit dem folgenden Counterintelligence Program (COINTELPRO) sowie an die Hetze im Deutschen Herbst und an Putins „Kampf gegen Faschismus“. 
Im Krieg stirbt die Wahrheit zuerst.4

1977 sagte der damalige Vorsitzende der CDU-Fraktion Bernd Neumann (2005 bis 2013 Staatsminister bei der Bundeskanzlerin und Beauftragter der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien [Kulturstaatsminister!]) im Bremer Parlament anlässlich einer Diskussion über Frieds Gedicht Die Anfrage: 
„… so etwas würde ich lieber verbrannt sehen …“.

Zum Projekt:
Am 10. Mai 2000, etwa zum Zeitpunkt des Autodafés* vom 10. Mai 1933, beginnt der Wiener Künstler Hans Nevídal mit Projektionen von Brandschutzfilmen an die Fassade der Deutsche Nationalbibliothek.
Die beiden Vorbilder der Bücherverbrennungen im Mai 1933 illustrieren die Geschichte des deutschen Antisemitismus: als Reaktion auf die „Hinrichtung“ seiner Bücher verbrannte Luther 1520 in Wittenberg die Bannbulle des Papstes und ein Exemplar des Corpus Iuris Canonici. 1817 feierten die protestantischen Studenten der deutschen Universitäten auf der Wartburg in Thüringen mit einer Bücherverbrennung den „Geburtstag des Glaubens und der Freiheit“. 
1820 schrieb Heinrich Heine mit Bezug auf die Verbrennung islamischer und arabischer Texte in Granada 1499: „Das war ein Vorspiel nur, dort wo man Bücher verbrennt, / Verbrennt man auch am Ende Menschen.“

* Autodafé wird ebenso wie Inquisition seit dem 18. Jahrhundert verwendet und bedeutet Glaubensgericht.

THIS YEAR HANS NEVIDAL SHOWS RESCUE MISSIONS IN THE GAZA STRIP
In light of current events, my action this year addresses a phenomenon inherent in the book burning of 1933: anti-Semitism and how traumatisation turned victims into perpetrators, and how the extermination of people of Jewish “race“ by the Nazi state turned frighteningly quickly into ethnic (more correctly: religious) cleansing – ultimately into genocide – against the Palestinians by the state of Israel.

What is frightening is the narrowing of the “corridor of opinion“1 in the Federal Republic of Germany (on which I am focussing here), where any criticism of the state of Israel is defamed and punished as “anti-Semitism“. For example, any comparison of Israeli policy with that of the Nazi state is banned as anti-Semitic according to Example 10 of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance‘s definition of anti-Semitism2. Under the pretext of “combating the evils of genocide, ethnic cleansing, racism, anti-Semitism and xenophobia worldwide“3, criticism of the crimes of the state of Israel is discredited. The situation is reminiscent of the McCarthy era with the subsequent Counterintelligence Programme (COINTELPRO), as well as the agitation during the German Autumn and Putin‘s “fight against fascism“.
In war, the truth dies first.4

I would rather see something like that burnt ...“

About the project:
On May 10, 2000, around the time of the auto-da-fé* of May 10, 1933, the Viennese artist Hans Nevídal began projecting fire safety films onto the facade of the German National Library.
The two models for the book burnings in May 1933 illustrate the history of German anti-Semitism: in reaction to the “execution” of his books, Luther burned the Pope‘s bull of excommunication and a copy of the Corpus Iuris Canonici in Wittenberg in 1520. In 1817, Protestant students at German universities celebrated the “birthday of faith and freedom“ with a book burning at Wartburg Castle in Thuringia.
In 1820, Heinrich Heine wrote, referring to the burning of Islamic and Arabic texts in Granada in 1499, “That was just a prelude, where they burn books, / They also burn people in the end.“

* auto-da-fé has been used in the same way as inquisition since the 18th century and means court of faith.
