PHD RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP OPPORTUNITIES IN
TOURISM AND CULTURAL CHANGE


Up to four full time PhD bursaries are available from September 2004 in
Sheffield Hallam University's Faculty of Organisation and Management. The
research bursary will be payable to the successful applicants for a maximum
period of three years. The current annual rate is £10,500. Applications are
sought from candidates preferably with a Research Masters degree, or with a
good honours degree in either the social sciences or the humanities.

Please note that these bursaries are open only to applicants from the
European Union.

Applicants are requested to submit a 1,500 word synopsis of a draft research
proposal, broadly in line with the wide-ranging research themes identified
below.

The closing date for applications is the 17th September 2004.

The Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change (CTCC) is one of the largest
tourism research centres in Europe and the Centre achieved a grade 4 in the
2001 UK Research Assessment Exercise. The Centre for Tourism and Cultural
Change was established as an international, multidisciplinary research and
development organisation committed to advancing the understanding of the
relationships shared between tourism and culture(s). Through research,
consultancy, conferences and publications we seek to generate ideas,
stimulate debate, challenge assumptions, inform policy, develop networks and
contribute to best practice in planning, management and marketing relating
to tourism and cultural change.

The Centre seeks applications from potential PhD candidates who can
contribute to the work of the CTCC by addressing the following broad
research themes:

-tourism as a contemporary social phenomenon

-sustainable tourism

-tourism development - policy and planning

-the material cultures of tourism

-heritage tourism development

-tourism and festivals as transnational practice

-the tourist experience
