For DHCP 'pump -i' works. Is there a utility for assigning static IP configuration too? I tried by modifying /etc/network/interfaces bu did not work out..

Did you restart network ('/etc/init.d/networking restart' or 'Restart networking' as user root)? For configuring also take a look at grml-network.

This should work! You have to restart the network services via /etc/init.d/networking restart as root. Regards Nico
