Thanks a lot!
Did the i810-module ever work on your HP Compaq dc7100 [with other distributions e.g.]? Did you try Xorg-Xserver on your laptop with the i810-module already?
Generally I don't want to hack around hwinfo because SuSE did a pretty good job on that tool. Via bootparameter/cmdline-switch it will be of course possible to use vesafb on grml. And if startup of Xserver fails you will find a note about possible problems and their solutions/workarounds.

I haven't tried another Distro, it's a new machine at my company. I will do so tomorrow, trying SuSE and Mandrake.

SuSE and Mandrake using both the vesa driver for this card.

Thanks for information!
I'm busy working on the new grml-x-system. Currently it looks like (much more colors in reality ;-)):
| % grml-x wmi | | Specified windowmanager is wmi | Video is ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AP [Radeon 9600] using XFree86(radeon) Server | Monitor is ddc | Using Modes [TODO] | | Creating /etc/X11/XF86Config-4: done | | Now trying to run startx on display 7.
If it fails you get messages like the following one (if running from inside screen):
| It seems you are running grml-x from inside GNU screen. | Notice that this might fail if running as user grml! Please exit screen and try to run grml-x again.
Or:
| Monitor frequency too high or too low? Just specify hsync/vsync manually: | grml-x -hsync 60 -vsync 60 ... | | Problems with the module used for X? Try to load another one or fall back to module fbdev: | grml-x -module radeon ... | grml-x -module fbdev ... | | Want to adjust the resolution? Use the mode-switch: | grml-x -mode 1024x768 ... | grml-x -mode '1200x1024 1024x768' ... | | Report bugs, send wishes and feedback to the grml team: | http://www.grml.org/ - contact (at) grml.org
I plan to do all the X-stuff in one single shellscript so it should be easy to test for everyone. As soon as I have a first "public-version" available I will let you know.
