Does the enclosed have anything to do with the issue?
It seems odd that after a while, such as now, gnome works fine -
should I have avoided the xorg upgrade?

Problem with the firegl stuff of the fglrx driver package. Does X without fglrx driver work for you? If so try to use X without the fglrx stuff.

X works with or without fglrx, but with radeon(ati) the behaviour is exactly the same - see attached.
Funny enough, if I use flux long enough, the x server settles and I can use gnome, which, on the one hand I hate, but on the other, is easy for others who have to work with me.
But in my last install, this did not happen, as everything just worked. Same exact box.
Wierd. Not urgent, but if anyone come up with something, please let me know.
