Just a noob question, for no reason other than neugier.
Why does debian installer, lenny, recognise both the sata and atapi cd thing, giving the correct response to cat /proc/scsi/scsi, whereas grml requires bootparameters ide1=noprobe and ide0=noprobe to get sata hdd and atapi(sata) sdr0 recognised?

Can you please provide us output of "hwinfo --disk" (the optimum would be output of grml as well as Debian).
I think you have another libata<->PATA regression, we are working on that - experimental builds are available at http://grml.org/2.6.25/
