I would like to boot grml_small from CF (via IDE-CF-adapter). According to the FAQ, this should be a piece of cake. I mkfs'ed the filesystem to ext2, put the iso image on the CF and had a go at it. However, all I get is the complaint "Missing Operating System".

How can I fix that?

Install a bootloader. :)

Using the grml2usb script (http://wiki.grml.org/doku.php?id=usb) should work for you as well.
