Too dull I've been!
One press of the switch and the hardware light came on.
I'd found wicd on my travels (apparently it is in Sid already but not Lenny) as an easy replacement for the gnome-network-manager. wicd-client is a gui tool but it makes setting up and controlling all networks extremely easy for the end-user. Add this to /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://apt.wicd.net lenny extras
You just leave /etc/network/interfaces as
auto lo iface lo inet loopback
and leave the rest to wicd
