In non-EFI boot mode (AKA BIOS boot) you'll get isolinux/syslinux
which requires tab to get into edit mode, while in EFI boot mode
(which is the default on most modern systems) you'll get GRUB boot
loader, which expects pressing 'e' to get into edit mode to adjust
boot options.

So from Grml's point of view everything works as expected.
