1-try simple things.

boot standard grml e see what is going on.

2-yes failsafe is more tolerant mode.

see supress quiet mode on boot to show all messages and try boot no wifi or network. if this work try use command shell lswh -html > myhw.html and post your hardware list.

Is this a dd-ed USB stick where grml64 2018.12 is running from?
How much memory does your system have?
Does booting with the failsafe boot option change anything?
