Could be please provide me the output of hwinfo | grep -i XFree86
XFree86 v4 Server Module: i810 XFree86 v4 Server Module: i810 XkbRules: xfree86 XFree86 Protocol: explorerps/2
Thanks a lot!
Did the i810-module ever work on your HP Compaq dc7100 [with other distributions e.g.]? Did you try Xorg-Xserver on your laptop with the i810-module already?
I haven't tried another Distro, it's a new machine at my company. I will do so tomorrow, trying SuSE and Mandrake.
Generally I don't want to hack around hwinfo because SuSE did a pretty good job on that tool. Via bootparameter/cmdline-switch it will be of course possible to use vesafb on grml. And if startup of Xserver fails you will find a note about possible problems and their solutions/workarounds.
