I have Debian Unstable + grml-etc-core on my 901, and i think the webcam "just worked" quite all kernels i did try. ( tested with "mplayer tv://" )
However, i do now run a 2.6.28-rc kernel because i had problems with alsa, wlan and suspend/resume with older kernels.

Hmm I'm not 100% sure if my kernel image has all you need for the 701. But it should be worth a try.
Tell me your results, chances are high that i will rebuild once more before Debian or Grml kernels will satisfy my eee's needs :)
