I have an ATI card. I was not able to use Xorg in grml 0.7 except after HD install.
Yesterday, I tried the grml 0.8-rc1 and found that I was still not able to use X out of box.
I was trying to find an appropriate (fallback) driver for X, I tried:
grml-x -module ati grml-x -module radeon grml-x -module vesa
Are these the exact commands you entered? No wonder they didn't work, you'd have to specify a window-manager (e.g. wm-ng, fluxbox)
None can start X.
What error message do you get. It's quite hard to guess why it doesn't work without a decent error message (or if there is none, a comment specifying this fact).
Is it possible to use X without installing anything, ie. the ATI proprietary driver fglrx?
It surely is. I'm running it here with the radeon driver without any problems.
Thanks, Tobias
