Huh - /dev/snd/pcm* should be correct for ALSA.
How do I (re)create /dev/pcm?
Please show 'lsmod | grep _pcm'. Which xmms-version? Did you install any additional plugins? Did you configure any special stuff in xmms? Sound works outside xmms?
