If you want to use Resolution with 1280x1024 in VMWare you have to patch this file:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.vmware
You have to change Hz to this:
HorizSync 33.0 - 74.0 VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0
And also add 1280x1024 in each Modelines it show now like that:
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
Maybe it would be a idea to integrate this settings to main grml build. This settings are tested under VMWare 5.5

Older versions of xorg.conf.vmware did use X server's recognition for resolution but this wasn't very elegant for monitors with higher, not so common resolutions as you had to scroll using VMware's scroll bar if the desktop inside VMware was bigger than the non-fullscreen mode of VMware itself. So I did chose 1024x768 as the default. The xrandr extension never worked for me in VMware, so I've to experiment with resolution stuff once again...
