Here is a photo (taken by my cellphone camera) of the "bouncing window" that I mentioned. (Sorry for the not-very-good quality of the camera...) I've tried all of the suggestions mentioned, but they unfortunately didn't succeed in getting rid of it.
My screen resolution (found using xdpyinfo) is 1280x1024.
What happens if you run 'xrandr -s 1024x768' inside a xterminal? Does the message disappear then?
