Just a stupid question, but were this the issue, why not merely write something like

"iface eth0 inet dhcp" in the interfaces file, presuming the addy is called from dhcp?

Or, add the addy if it is static?

Does the dhcp server require a pw?  I am presuming this is a wired connexion.

If wireless, let me know, please, and I shall try what I can.
