Mit diesem Versatzstück des Medienphilosophen Jean Baudrillard leitet Morpheus die Vorbereitung Neos auf seine Aufgabe ein, wenn er Neo aufzeigt, in einer Traumwelt zu leben, die nur als Teil einer neuro-interaktiven Simulation – einer Matrix – existiert, während er sich in einer zerstörten, sonnenverfinsterten, von Maschinen regierten Welt befindet: "Willkommen in der Wüste der Wirklichkeit".

Im Film wird der Beginn der Matrix mit der Erschaffung der Systeme der KI definiert. Tatsächlich durchdringen Anwendungen der KI längst all unsere Lebensbereiche und haben sowohl Auswirkungen auf unsere Entscheidungen und sozialen Beziehungen als auch Einfluss auf Wirtschaft, Politik und Gesellschaft.

Die Simulation löst die Differenz zwischen Realem und Imaginärem auf und verwandelt sie in eine Indifferenz, eine "hybride Wirklichkeit". Innerhalb des Hyperrealen sind Reales und Imaginäres nicht mehr auseinanderzuhalten; Physisches und Digitales verschmelzen, werden "phygital".

Ebenso verändert sich das Verhältnis von Mensch, Natur und Technik hin zu einer neuen Konfiguration, einem neuen Beziehungsgeflecht. Schon Donna Harraway verwies auf die transformativen Potenziale in dichten Beziehungsgefügen. Wenn wir aus dem Simulacrum der Matrix erwachen können, können wir die Wüste der Wirklichkeiten mit bestimmten Werkzeugen verändern?

Die Nutzung von Technologie erscheint in der Ausstellung /Desert of Realities/ nicht mehr nur als dystopisches Modell einer düsteren Vision der Zukunft oder als Darstellung des Ist-Zustandes, sondern auch als Teil der Lösung, den wir uns zu eigen machen sollten: /Es macht einen Unterschied ob man einen Weg nur kennt, oder ob man diesen Weg auch geht./ [Morpheus]

In /Desert of Realities/ werden mittels Multi-Media-Installationen einerseits Aspekte der Simulation offengelegt und andererseits Gegenentwürfe entwickelt: die Möglichkeit einer digitalen Berührung bei physischer Trennung (/Beyond My Skin/, Flavia Mazzanti); wie Nahrungsmittel wie Fisch aufgrund der sich verändernden Umweltbedingungen nur mehr für reiche Menschen zugänglich sind, während sich der Rest mit aus dem Labor gezüchteten Lebensmitteln begnügen muss (/Future Sushi/, Etsuko Ichihara); Entwicklungen im Kontext der Konvergenz digitaler und biologischer Körperlichkeit anhand der Annäherung von Kleidung (Mode) an das zugrundeliegende / darunterliegende / bloßliegende Nerven“kostüm“ (/Internal Collection/, Amy Karle); Netzwerkdynamiken, wie die Interaktion von Natur mit Technik und deren Beobachtung sie in Gang setzt (/Hyle/, Theresa Schubert); alternative Materialien zur Herstellung von Mode (/Materia Bruta,/ Surzhana Radnaeva); oder sogar als Kommunikation zwischen Mensch und Bakterium (/The Haori Biofilm,/ Vivien Roussel); und Strom als ästhetischer Motor eines modularen Hörstücks das eine multiperspektivische Erzählung geleitet über Kupferdrähte entwickelt (/Circuit/, Christine Schörkhuber) und Konzepte von Überwachung und Privatsphäre im Zeitalter von Big Data und die gegensätzlichen Gefühle von Unbehagen und Sicherheit aus verschiedenen Perspektiven (/Watch Me/ - Zhe Wang). *Künstlerinnen:* Etsuko Ichihara (JPN) Amy Karle (USA) Flavia Mazzanti (ITA/BRA/AUT) Surzhana Radnaeva (RUS/FRA) Vivien Roussel (FRA) Christine Schörkhuber (AUT) Theresa Schubert (DEU) Winnie Soon (HKG) & Lee Tzu-Tung (TWN) Zhé Wang (CHN/DEU)

*Desert of Realities*

Welcome to the desert of the real. [Morpheus to Neo in the film Matrix].

With this phrase by the media philosopher Jean Baudrillard, Morpheus introduces Neo's preparation for his task when he shows Neo living in a dream world that exists only as part of a neuro-interactive simulation - a matrix - while he is in a destroyed, sun-darkened world ruled by machines: "Welcome to the desert of reality".

In the film, the beginning of the Matrix is defined by the creation of the systems of AI. In fact, applications of AI have long permeated all areas of our lives, impacting our decisions and social relationships as well as influencing the economy, politics, and society. Simulation dissolves the difference between the real and the imaginary and transforms it into indifference, a "hybrid reality". Within the hyperreal, the real and the imaginary can no longer be distinguished; the physical and the digital merge, becoming "phygital".

Likewise, the relationship between humans, nature and technology is changing towards a new configuration, a new network of relationships. Donna Harraway already referred to the transformative potentials in dense webs of relationships. If we can awaken from the simulacrum of the matrix, can we change the desert of realities with certain tools?

In the Desert of Realities exhibition, the use of technology no longer appears only as a dystopian model of a bleak vision of the future or as a representation of the current state, but also as part of the solution that we should embrace: It makes a difference whether you only know a path, or whether you walk that path. [Morpheus] In Desert of Realities, multi-media installations reveal aspects of simulation on the one hand and develop counter-designs on the other: The possibility of digital touch in physical separation (Beyond My Skin, Flavia Mazzanti); how food such as fish is now only accessible to rich people due to changing environmental conditions, while the rest have to make do with lab-grown food (Future Sushi, Etsuko Ichihara); developments in the context of the convergence of digital and biological corporeality through the approximation of clothing (fashion) to the underlying/underlying/exposed nerve "costume" (Internal Collection, Amy Karle); Network dynamics, as the interaction of nature with technology and its observation sets it in motion (Hyle, Theresa Schubert); alternative materials for the production of fashion (Materia Bruta, Surzhana Radnaeva); or even as communication between humans and bacteria (The Haori Biofilm, Vivien Roussel); and electricity as the aesthetic engine of a modular audio piece that develops a multi-perspective narrative guided by copper wires (Circuit, Christine Schörkhuber) and concepts of surveillance and privacy in the age of Big Data and the conflicting feelings of unease and security from different perspectives (Watch Me - Zhe Wang). *Artists:* Etsuko Ichihara (JPN) Amy Karle (USA) Flavia Mazzanti (ITA/BRA/AUT) Surzhana Radnaeva (RUS/FRA) Vivien Roussel (FRA) Christine Schörkhuber (AUT) Theresa Schubert (DEU) Winnie Soon (HKG) & Lee Tzu-Tung (TWN) Zhé Wang (CHN/DEU)
